On Saturday, July 12, 2025, the bagpipes in Port Huron will billow again, sending the fleet north for the 101st consecutive Bayview Mackinac Race the first of our next hundred years on Lake Huron.
TwoClassicCourses,PlusaNewOption Competitors will have chosen between the 259-nauticalmile Cove Island Course and the 204-mile Shore Course, while a refreshed Notice of Race introduced a dedicated Cruising Division with “Cruiser-Racer” and “Cruising” classes.
This year’s race is also leg one of the “Ultra Mac,” an eastto-west marathon that continues from Mackinac to Chicago in partnership with Chicago Yacht Club, offering intrepid crews some 550 nautical miles of continuous racing.
Race veterans know that years ending in “5” have produced some of the lake’s fiercest weather—1925’s six-fleet, 1955’s lightning-lit knockdowns, and 1985’s sinking of Tomahawk. Their lesson endures: reef early, respect Huron, and help your neighbor.
Reaching the finish line twenty-five times earns sailors the coveted “Old Goat” status. The Endless Summer Band will be playingits25thstraightislandparty,anOldGoatintheirown right.
Reaching the finish line twenty-five times earns sailors the coveted “Old Goat” status. The Endless Summer Band will be playing its 25th straight island party, an Old Goat in their own right.
Our second century launches with generous support from our presenting partner, National Fleet Services LLC, along with Deep Eddy Vodka, Detroit Liquid Ventures, Casamigos, Detroit City Distillery, Mission Point Resort, Aperol, Shepler’s, Aitken & Ormond Insurance, Frankenmuth Insurance, MicroCODE, and the Bayview Mackinac Race Foundation.
Behind the banners stands a tireless team of racecommittee members, inspectors, and dock hosts whose dedication turns a northern lake into sailing’s grandest summer stage.
You don’t need a boat to be part of the story. The “Challenge These Waters” exhibit at Detroit’s Dossin Great Lakes Museum open through August 10, walks visitors through a century of race artifacts, film reels, and the storied box compass from Wrinkle, Bayview’s first racer. On Mackinac Island, Mission Point Resort again hosts finishing crews and fans alike, while live-tracking at BYCMack.com lets armchair tacticians follow every tack.

Fairwinds,
As we begin our second century of racing to Mackinac Island, I would like to thank all our past and current volunteers, without whom we never would have attained such a successful run of racing.
Also, the Mackinac Race Foundation, whose purpose is to ensure the Bayview Mackinac Race continues forever, provides a level of support that helps us do just that.
I’d also like to thank this year’s sponsors, also without whom this race would not be possible:
National Fleet Services, Bayview Mackinac Race Foundation, Deep Eddy Vodka, Detroit Liquid Ventures, Casamigos, Detroit City Distillery, Mission Point Resort, Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry, Aitken & Ormond Insurance, Frankenmuth Insurance, Aperol, and MicroCODE.
Please support our sponsors whenever you can.
While I am the Race Chairman for this one year, (and in my third year of a five-year term on the Mackinac Race Authority (MRA), many of our volunteers have served for years, decades. Please be sure to thank them when you see them.
The Bayview Mackinac Race is many things to many people. Over the past 100 years the race has developed certain characteristics and traditions that are dear to our hearts. Whatever it is that makes this race attractive to you, thank you for your participation this year.
This year, we will be running the “traditional” Shore Course, passing to the North of Bois Blanc Island, finishing East to West, and, the Cove Island Course, first introduced in 1972, and the ONLY Bayview Mackinac Race course until the re-introduction of the Shore Course, for Cruising type boats, in 1992. The finish line for the Cove Island Course will be the same finish line as the Shore Course, passing North of Bois Blanc Island, and finishing East to West.
New for this year, on the scoring front, is the ORC Velocity Prediction Program (VPP) has been expanded to include four knots windspeed. Previously, the lowest windspeed in the VPP was six knots. Experienced Bayview Mackinac racers know we often spend a lot of the race in four knots (or less) of wind. Concurrently, the Bayview Mackinac Custom’
wind mixes for both the Cove Island, and the Shore Course have been updated to reflect the four-knot wind speed inclusion in the VPP, and, the actual weather during the past 10 Bayview Mackinac races.
We are also aware that occasionally, we have races with considerably more windspeed than the historical average. The MRA has in place a ‘trigger’ that will allow for the use of ORC’s Weather Routing Scoring (WRS). Should pre-race forecasts meet those trigger conditions, and we elect to use WRS, then it will be announced no later than 8:00 AM the morning of the race, and each boat’s WRS Time Correction Factor (TCF) will be published before the Warning Signal Use of either the Bayview Mackinac Custom Wind Mix, or. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank our Commodore, Paul Falcone, for the opportunity to serve as this year’s Bayview Mackinac Race Chair. I love this race and appreciate the chance to give a little back to that which has given me so much.
Good luck, sail fast, sail safe, and I’ll see you on the Island.

Linda has been working on the BYC Mackinac Race Committee since 2011. She started working on the finish line under Chuck Reader, Team Leader, on Sunday 12 noon – 6pm; Monday 6am – 12noon; and Tuesday 6pm – 12midnight shifts. With the unfortunate passing of Chuck Reader, Linda took over as the Team Leader for this shift in 2017.
Linda was a strong and capable Team Leader, and I had the pleasure of working on her team beginning in 2016. She could handle any position on the finish line and was effective at assigning the various finish line duties to the best person for the job. She also mixed it up by assigning team members to other jobs to cross-train the team, so there was no lack in knowledge of all of the positions.
In 2020, on the way up to the island, she received a call from Jeff Maier, 2020 PRO, about the finish line. This was Covid year and the first year that finish times were to be “taken” via YB Tracking and there was no finish line team. He asked if she was available to record finish times as a backup in case YB Tracking did not work. Of course, she immediately said yes and gathered a small crew to do so In the end, YB Tracking worked as expected, but Linda was ready and willing to do “whatever it takes” to help make the race run as it should.
Besides working on the finish line, Linda has also worked on the Signal Boat on the starting line for the race for many years with the ever-important current position of Principal Timer/Radio Countdown. The 2018 start was a very light air start, and we had to postpone the starts multiple times throughout the day. We would start one or two classes; postpone for about 20 min; start one or two classes; postpone and so on throughout the day as the wind ebbed and flowed. Linda handled the reset of the timing for each class start like a pro
Aside from working on the Bayview Mackinac Race Committee, Linda works on many of the DRYA races throughout the season in a variety of positions such as: Start Timer, Finish Timer, Line Judge, Recorder, Start Check off and Flags just to name a few. She also works on the LSSC Wednesday Night Sunset Series in the same capacities with the added job of placing the light on the finish mark before the mark was replaced with a lit mark.
I am proud and honored to work with Linda on Race Committee and look forward to many more years in the future.

The Mackinac Race Foundation's purpose is to ensure that the annual Bayview Mackinac Race continues on forever.
The Foundation depends entirely on contributions, bequests, and endowments to accomplish its goal to guarantee the financial security of the Mackinac Race in perpetuity. Thus, it is the Foundation's investment strategy and policy to invest the net principal of all monetary contributions and donations and to use only the earning in its support of the Mackinac Race each year.
Now, more than ever, we need your support to serve as a guarantee for the future of the Mackinac Race. Please think of us now or in your future estate plans. Every single contribution of any amount is always truly appreciated.
Your donation will help us reach our goal of $1,000,000
How can I support the Foundation and pledge support to the Mackinac Race?
To make a donation to the Mackinac Race Foundation that will insure the continuation of the grand tradition of the Bayview Yacht Club Mackinac Race, click or scan the QR code.
The Bayview Mackinac Hall of Fame Trophy - aka the “Old Bear Trophy” was donated by the Bayer Family in honor of the first recipient: Com. Charles M. Bayer who was affectionately called “Old Bear” by his friends and family The trophy is perpetual and is awarded to select individuals in honor of their support, dedication, and outstanding contribution to the success and continuation of the Bayview Mackinac Race. Nominees for the Hall of Fame Trophy must have raced at least 10 BYC Mackinac Races and brought honor to themselves, the Race and Bayview Yacht Club The election process is held in August every year and the selection committee is comprised of Grand Rams and Old Goat Committee members. If you would like to nominate someone (living or deceased) for this honor, please fill out the nomination form before the beginning of the Mackinac Race.
The Bayview Mackinac Race Hall of Fame Selection Committee proudly announces that Com. Philip D. O’Niel, III has been elected as the 2025 recipient of the “Old Bear Trophy”
Com. O’Niel has a long and storied history with the Bayview Mackinac Race that began in 1977 when he completed his first race aboard their family’s C&C 35 “Natalie J.” While finishing second to last, fighting to avoid being the Pickle Boat, something about that race captivated him and started a lifelong obsession. Since that race in 1977, Com. O’Niel has competed in every Bayview Mackinac Race, with the sole exception in 2013 when Natalie J raced the TransPac and was unable to return for the start of the race. With the annual July pilgrimage racing up Lake Huron, his passion, enthusiasm, and dedication to this race only seem to grow.
The centennial race marked Com. O’Niel’s 47th Bayview Mackinac Race, all of which he has sailed on the Natalie J. While the boat has changed over the years (C&C 35 Mark II, C&C 41, Nelson Merak 46, Beneteau367, TP 52, Pac 52), his competitive focus has not Com O’Niel has placed in class twentyone times (almost 50% of his races), won his class ten times, finished second overall twice, and holds the record for any boat of five overall Bayview Mackinac victories. These wins are spread across time, boats, and rating systems, with each of the five Natalie J’s that have competed in the Bayview Mackinac Race enjoying tremendous success In three decades, his seven overall podium finishes came in three boats (C&C 35, Nelson Merak 46, and TP 52).
The Natalie J program, founded by Com Philip D O’Niel Jr and grown by his son Com Philip D O’Niel III, has provided an incredible platform that has launched and grown many sailors’ passion for sailing and the Bayview Mackinac Race. Com. O’Niel has offered the opportunity for countless sailors to complete their first Bayview Mackinac Race and develop the same love for the race he so enjoys. The more telling statistic is that more than ten sailors have completed 25Bayview Mackinac Races aboard the Natalie J This speaks to Com O’Niel’s loyalty, infectious enthusiasm, and success in this race
Com O’Niel was the Race Chairman for the 1985 Bayview Mackinac Race and served as the Commodore of Bayview Yacht Club in 1991. The 1985 race was particularly challenging, as a significant storm punished the fleet, resulting in four broken masts and a sinking boat. In addition to the record conditions, the 1985 race set the high-water mark for participation until this year’s centennial race, demonstrating Com O’Niel’s tireless efforts to promote the race he cares so deeply about.
Com O’Niel is proud to be a founding member of and Round Island (highest level) donor to the Bayview Mackinac Race Foundation, which is dedicated to ensuring that future generations can experience the splendor of the Bayview Mackinac Race. (The Mackinac Foundation supported the race ' s running for a few years during the COVID-19 pandemic ) Com O’Niel was also elected as the Foundation’s representative on the Mackinac Race Authority to help provide stewardship for the race we all cherish. Com. O’Niel is also an active member of the Old Goat Society.
For nearly fifty years since that first race in 1977, Com. O’Niel has dedicated a significant portion of his life to supporting and competing in the greatest sailing race in the world. While this award recognizes Com. O’Niel’s accomplishments, contributions, and dedication to the Bayview Mackinac Race, he has also had immense success in his sailing career outside the Bayview Mackinac Race.

The Society of Grand Rams was founded to honor those distinguished sailors who have completed 50 Bayview Mackinac Races. Having sailed 50 or more Mackinac Races requires more than one hundred twenty days on the water and some fourteen thousand miles of sailing. They have likely endured 100 thunderstorms and suffered through 500 or more watch changes.

Welcome to Bayview Yacht Club, one of the most storied and historic sailing clubs in the nation As we look forward to our 101st Anniversary of the Mackinac Race in 2025 we are reminded of our long history as a sailing club and the members that have brought us to this point. Bayview continues to develop many of the nation’s top sailors and has members competing in regattas around the world.
In 2021 BYC completed a state-of-the-art renovation of our Clubhouse adding an additional 3,000 square feet of space and taking full advantage of our waterfront location Members enjoy waterfront dining featuring locally sourced ingredients, a second-floor bar with balcony offering the best views of the river, and world class banquets ranging from corporate meetings to 150 person weddings. Members continue to gather at our fully restored bar top located in the world-famous “Bayview Bar” – home of the Hummer!
