Message from the Commodore

Greetings Members,

Well so much for my plan to “Cruise” through my Commodore year. As most of you are aware, we experienced a water pipe break above the second-floor bathroom resulting in extensive water damage to the first-floor bar and dining room. If it was not for the quick action of our Club Manager, Matt Prost, and a few other members the damage could have been a whole lot worse.

I want to personally thank all the members that worked so hard on Christmas Day during the clean-up but mostly our staff who gave up time during their holiday break to quickly move our bar and dining room to the Mackinac Room. We only lost one day of dining and bar operations during that time, and it just shows the spirit and dedication we all share for our home away from home on the Detroit River.

While unforeseen and unfortunate, this does present us with a unique opportunity for modifications during the “re-renovation” process. Back during the third quarter of 2022 the office sent out a survey to all of our members and the response was overwhelming. Many members commented on changes they would like to see in the bar and restaurant to “warm” the environment up a bit. The BYC Board took your collective

comments to heart, and we are planning just that.

Commodore Mike Helm along with Matt Prost have taken the lead and are now working with our insurance company, contractors, and membership to get our bar and dining room back up and running as soon as possible. You can expect to see changes to the floor-plan of the dining room taking out a section of the wall to create a much more open space. You will see a larger walk-through opening from the Blue Room and Main Dining Room Upgrades to wall coverings, carpet, softer lighting, furniture, and sound deadening ceiling tiles will help to achieve a much more-friendly atmosphere In the bar we are adding wainscoting to the walls and perhaps a wine display on the back wall that separates the two spaces In the end I can promise you that your overall dining and bar experience will be greatly improved.

If you would like to help the best thing you can do is bring your friends and family down to have dinner and enjoy the

club over the next few months. The temporary dining room is open, and the drinks are flowing at the bar. Not the temporary bar but the real bar – we opened it Super Bowl weekend and it will remain open during its renovation, so come down and enjoy your Club!

The 99th Bayview Mackinac Race NOR has been posted and registrations are flowing in As of Feb 9th, we have a total of 133 boats registered which may be a record this early in the game If you have not registered your boat, now is the time.

This year I would like to focus on increasing participation for all Bayview run regattas. With that in mind we are creating an Over-All “Team” Trophy to be presented along with the BYC “Member of the Year” and “Sailor of the Year” during the annual meeting in December. This newly dedicated trophy will be awarded to the yacht that performs the best in all Bayview events throughout the season.

Right now, Brian Shenstone and the trophy committee are working hard to find, rededicate, and put an unused trophy back in circulation Laurie Bunn, and her sailing committee is busy at creating and posting rules for qualifying

More to come on that, but I would consider registering for as many BYC regattas as possible such as Bayview One Design, Mackinac Race, WOW, LongDistance, Thursday Off the Dock and North Channel Race.

Finally, I will say that my wife, “Lady” Marta, (she loves being called that) has put together an All-Star team to put on a wonderful fashion show. Please mark your calendars for Thursday, April 20th Details l fi li d but from what I have ttend event for 2023 Commodore

Despite being the middle of February spring is certainly in the air! Well applications are in and we currently are on a waiting list, talk of Regattas and the Mackinac Race are in full gear, and planning for a full lineup of spring events

I’m excited to have the opportunity to spend time up on Mackinac Island again this February. Our partnership with Liz Ware and Mission Point Resort has been amazing. We have joint media events, will tour the resort and see all the progress they have made fully remodeling their lobby and dining room, and work on the events taking place for the 99th Bayview Mackinac Race. BYC is also a partner in the joint training taking place between the

Detroit Fire Department and Mackinac Island Fire Department.

The changes happening in our Food & Beverage Department are great to see. Welcoming Chef Christopher Faulkner has been a great asset to us and will free up Mike to focus more on service, training, hiring, and events. Seeing his leadership in the kitchen and the vision they both have for Bayview will lead to great outcomes for our members. If you haven’t been to dinner recently, please stop down to support the club and the staff. We are eager to bring a whole lot of excitement with our spring menu and the multiple events coming up!

Among the many highlights this spring, the Fashion Show is back and better than ever This year we will host the entire event outside under a heated (if necessary) tent The raffles and silent auction are back, everyone will be in the same room, we are donating all proceeds to Team Bayview Junior Sailing, and with the team leading it you know it’s going to be special! Keep an eye out for the reservation link because this is sure to sell out quickly

All of our events are found on the Member Central calendar. If you don’t have access, please be sure to reach out to Jennifer in the office. We continue to put together a wide variety of events. Hard to believe we’re already planning St. Patrick’s Day, Easter Brunch, Old Goat’s Lunch, Commodore’s Ball, Fitting Out Party, Mother’s Day, Spring Roundup kicking off Thursday Night Races, and the Spring Invitational. You can easily make reservations online!

Sincerely, Matt

CHEF CHRISTOPHER FAULKNER

New York-native Chef Christopher Faulkner’s New American cuisine perfectly encapsulates his travels, culinary heritage and training. His dishes incorporate international culture and ingredients found in the regional cuisines of the Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia, the Caribbean and Europe. He has traveled extensively, living in different countries around the world, gathering ideas and techniques, working with professional chefs and inspired natural cooks.

Freshly relocated from New York, Chef Chris is seen in this photograph as a three year old, adjusting to his new life in Accra, Ghana. His beloved mom, who once owned a wholesale brownie business in the Bronx, frequently recalled how crushed she was standing next to his dad when he took this photo. Chef remembers her saying, “It was your first day of pre-school, and as I watched you walk away down the driveway, you never looked back!”

His dad’s overseas job at a nonprofit adult-education and job-training organization brought their family to West Africa on two occasions. First, to Ghana for two years and then to Togo for three. Chris' dad often took them to the Caribbean’s British Virgin Islands, the home of his own parents, who emigrated to New York in the 1920s.

"It was in Ghana and Togo where I discovered the taste of savory African spices and seasonings at roadside food stands. When I traveled to the Caribbean, I learned how to fish from my father and grandfather, and smelled the smoking of fresh local seafood cooking. As a kid, if I wasn’t sneaking out the back door of our house to go eat street food, I was in the kitchen hanging out with grandma or watching Julia Child on PBS.

By the time I was a young man with a well-travelled stomach—and a knack to prepare, mix and match, and explore food—it was clear that becoming a chef was a natural path for me."

Faulkner earned a degree from CIA (The Culinary Institute of America) and went on to work under Chef Geoffrey Zakarian at the Royalton Hotel’s restaurant Forty Four, Patroon and Town at the Chambers Hotel As Executive Consulting Chef, he opened Dogs & Tails, an American-themed high-end hot dog and cocktail restaurant in Kiev, Ukraine He was tapped to be the executive chef at Harlem’s soul food emporium, Melba’s Restaurant and the opening Executive Chef at Solomon & Kuff in West Harlem, where he brought a range of Caribbean flavors to those looking to experience a modern translation of West Indian culture and style Most recently he was an executive chef for GrandLife Hotels in New York City where he opened The Soho Diner, a 24/7 establishment. At home with his wife, Monica, Faulkner enjoys experimenting with his prized rotisserie and variations of jerk techniques and curries, while indulging his passions as a movie buff and traveller.

BAYVIEW TEAM

Thank you to all of our members for their continued generosity and support of our program in 2022. It amazes me how many of our members not only support us financially but also offer help in other ways when needed

We had a successful program last summer with high enrollment numbers and our Board of Directors has been hard at work ensuring we build upon that success by continuing to make improvements. Over the last couple of months, we’ve begun the process of renovating the interior of the John S Barbour Sailing Center This was something long overdue after 22+ years of operating out of the building We began with bathroom demolitions (thank you Bob Nutter!) and discovered many plumbing issues inside the walls, as well as finding rusted out steel studs. A flooring contractor came through in early February to grind the cement floor in the main classroom and resurface with a polyaspartic floor coating (see before and after photos) We’ve got drywall repair, painting, bathroom cabinet installations, lighting updates and many other items to complete before we are ready for the summer. When completed, it will be a clean and

refreshed interior that our staff, students, and members will be proud of.

In addition to the interior, we have been exploring ways to improve the rest of our facility and grounds. We’ve contracted with Robert Wood and Associates of Grosse Pointe to not only design a new storage garage for us, but also look at updating the exterior of our building so that it is contiguous with our new clubhouse across the canal We will have proposed renderings in the near future and will release those once they are ready

We are also hard at work assembling a solid coaching staff for the summer. I’m excited to announce we will have Carmen and Emma Cowles as guest coaches during the first week of our program. They will assist our staff with preparing our racing sailors for the first regatta of the season If you are not familiar with Carmen and Emma, they are twin sisters who sail together and have an extensive resume They are currently the #1 Ranked Women’s College Sailors (Yale University), Rolex Yachtswoman of the year (2018), 420 Youth World Champions (2017 & 2018), 420 Midwinters Champions (2017 & 2018), 420 National

Champions, and the list goes on. We are thrilled they will be joining us and they should give our 420, Opti and Laser sailors a jump start to the season

Our registration opens March 1st and we’ve just onboarded Clubspot as our new software vendor Clubspot will handle our registration process and not only reduce administrative work and paper shuffling on our end, but also make the enrollment process simple and easy for parents as well. Please mark your calendars for March 1st and be sure to sign up early! Some of our classes are anticipated to fill up rather quickly, so please don’t hesitate!

Finally, if you haven’t visited our new website, please be sure to check it out at www.bycjuniorsailing.org. If you have a relative, friend or neighbor interested in the program, please help us spread the word by sending them to the link above to learn more If you are able to make a financial contribution in 2023, please visit our donation page where you can make an online donation in a matter of minutes. Thank you again for your support and we are looking forward to a successful summer!

John VanTol | BYC Junior Sail Board President

Greetings from the Sailing Committee,

A lot of sail planning is at work This is my second year directing the dozens of dedicated volunteers in the Bayview Sailing committee I am so lucky to work with such a fun, smart, hardworking, Bayview-loving group of people

Over the winter and into spring, our committee met every second Monday or Tuesday at the Clubhouse We have a couple of open positions/volunteer needs if you would like to get more involved at Bayview. The Sailing Committee is a great way to meet people, support the sport, have fun, and even learn about sailboat racing from a little different perspective. We have a lot of responsibilities including planning the regattas, organizing the equipment, coordinating Race Committee volunteers, managing the trophies, recruiting/teaching new sailors, overseeing the U20 Club boats, long-range regatta prospecting, and more.

The Sailing Committee, with the approval of the B the Adult Learn to Sail (ALTS) format. Thanks to J has volunteered to lead the ALTS program for 20 article about some of the exciting changes we are to help meet the demand of classes selling out ea

The classes in the spring will be on Monday and T instead of Wednesdays when potential instructo their boats in the Wednesday Windsor races. We more ALTS instructors to make this year a success. consider helping coach classes or refer someone earn $50 a night; meet new sailors; enjoy a night teach as little or as much as your schedule allows need to be BYC members

New this year: coaches receive a complimentary Program membership for coaching 5 or more tim value Bob Nutter is leading the Club Boat Program in 2023 d are going to add some great U20 sailing opportunities and for the program participants. Email sailingcommittee@by for more information.

Overall, we have a lot of great events planned this year ra from Hitchhiker Thursdays for those races and other begi sailing opportunities through the BOD and other Bayview traditions. Dave Perry Match Race clinic, Detroit Cup, the Anniversary of the Women on Water regatta, and the J70 Corinthian North American Championship are all in our sigh

See you out on the water, and hopefully as a volunteer at the events.

2023 BYC Fleet Sailing & Regatta Director

Do you know any adults that would like to learn a bit about sailing, hands-on?

Since many of our skippers at BYC are vocally very capable, quite a few of us never took a sailing lesson. We simply learned from the shouting. As fun as that was, there is a better way.

Some folks are thinking about getting a sailboat and need to know how to avoid embarrassment. Some want to learn the helm. Some just want to go sailing. Bayview’s Adult Learn To Sail (ALTS) program offers a chance to learn from some of the best sailors at Bayview, live on the water using our Ultimate 20 fleet right outside the club. We welcome both members and non-members of BYC, with a 6-lesson program

Since our ALTS programs tend to sell out quickly, this year we are planning a more rigorous schedule, with 3 sessions, each a series of 6 lessons. The first session is planned to start midMay, twice a week for 3 weeks. The second session will start in June twice a week, and finish before July. Our third session will be more relaxed, one lesson each week beginning at the very end of July. We may even pursue an additional session for advanced sailing (like with spinnakers) if sailors want it.

Do YOU know anyone that might be interested? Would YOU like to join our team of instructors? Would YOU be open to taking some of our students on a Thursday race?

Watch the ALTS page on the Bayview website for all the specifics and get hold of us And we’ll be seeing you on the water!

Sailing. It’s what we do. Indeed.

Com. Ted Everingham Awarded

Harman Hawkins Trophy

Each year, the Harman Hawkins Trophy is awarded to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the field of Race Administration This year’s awardee is Ted Everingham, a US Sailing race officer, umpire, and judge and World Sailing international judge.

Everingham has a long history with US Sailing, spanning 33 years: he has been a judge or umpire at virtually every US Sailing championship event – many more than once –a past chair of the US Sailing Judges Committee, a Race Official Instructor, a member of the review board, and was part of the team that developed the modern umpire program, one of the leading national umpire programs in the world.

Just in case that is not enough, he is also a Past Commodore of both Bayview Yacht Club and Grosse Point Yacht Club.

Join us Saturday, March 25th at noon for a reception in honor of Com. Ted Everingham's achievement.
