Boundary-Defying Adventures For more than 40 years, the Baylor Walkabout program has set the standard for school-based outdoor adventure and instruction. From canoeing and kayaking to camping and climbing, Walkabout has helped young people explore their own limits and learn to lead the way.
The Director. Bett Adams is a 2002 graduate of Baylor School, but his passion for the outdoors dates to his freshman trip in 1999, when he first sat in a kayak. Since then, Bett has been a coach and counselor for outdoor experiences in the area and around the world. His professionalism is balanced by an infectious love for the outdoors and the life lessons it can teach young people.
Welcome to Summer!
At Camp Walkabout, we believe summer is the time to turn off the screens, put down the textbooks, make new friends, and pick up a new skill. Campers come away having learned a lot about the world around them, and themselves. Prior outdoor experience is not necessary! So, this summer: Why not make a new friend from the other side of the country? Why not go home knowing how to roll a kayak? Why not unplug for a while? Why not measure your summer in bald eagles, waterfalls, and starry skies? Why not enjoy Camp Walkabout, one of the area’s oldest and best-known outdoor camps?
Tennessee’s Outdoor Buffet. Chattanooga is the Southeast’s premiere adventure destination. Walkabout campers will kayak, canoe, and paddleboard through the Tennessee River Gorge, hike to remote waterfalls and swimming holes, rock climb on the world-renowned Tennessee Wall, head underground to explore the vast network of local caves, sleep under the southern stars, and experience exhilaration they can’t find anywhere else. Job One: Safety. Well-managed risk is the key to success in an outdoor program. All Walkabout counselors have outdoor medical training, and all group leaders have completed the 80-hour Wilderness First Responder certification. Baylor Walkabout has built an extraordinary safety record over its 40+ years, and the same safeguards are built in the Walkabout Experience. The Staff. Walkabout staff sets this program apart from other camps. All veterans of Baylor’s renowned Walkabout program, they are more than just counselors; they are mentors, instructors, facilitators, and role models. The group is carefully selected for their energy, dedication and passion for the outdoors.
