THEWALKABOUTEXPERIENCE Baylor Walkabout was established in 1977 as an afterschool activity for Baylor students. Year after year, Walkabout takes countless kids outside: outside their classrooms, their comfort zones, and the limits they’ve set for themselves. Every Walkabout adventure is also a lesson in leadership and self-discovery, deepening our students’ connections with each other and the world around them.

The Walkabout Experience is an overnight camp that gives Baylor campers that same opportunity. Rising 3rd to 11th graders can immerse themselves in the outdoors, making new memories and friends as they explore remote waterfalls, rock climb on the Tennessee Wall, navigate a network of local caves, and sleep under the Southern stars. All you need is an open mind, a willing spirit — and, of course, your hiking boots. (Day option is available, please see Enrichment camps.)

DAY CAMPS SPORTS Baylor’s specialized sports clinics are instructed by our varsity head coaches in a challenging and rewarding environment.

BASEBALL Head varsity coach Mike Kinney and members of the 2018 state championship team will teach and demonstrate drill and games to build offensive and defensive fundamentals. Emphasis is on proper techniques of hitting, pitching, and fielding.

FOOTBALL Head varsity coach Phil Massey and his assistants will provide player position work and an opportunity for a “tune up” before the fall season.

SOCCER: JUNIOR ACADEMY The Junior Soccer Academy is a fast-paced, fun- oriented camp designed specifically for younger players. Drills and activities help campers develop skills while learning fundamentals of the game. ages: 5-6 | dates: June 3- 7 | half-day: $125 (9 a.m. - noon) SOCCER: RECREATIONAL ACADEMY Designed for elementary aged players, the camp covers drills and activities to help rising stars begin or continue to develop skills while learning tactics and fundamentals. TENNIS The Baylor Summer Tennis Camp will provide professional tennis clinics combined with the most summer fun that any child could ask for. It will provide an opportunity for those who never played before to learn to play tennis. For experienced players, it will focus and improve tennis skills through exceptional instructions and match practices. Baylor Tennis Camp is ideal for every age and ability from beginners to high school varsity players. SPORTS XPERIENCE Baylor Sports Xperience offers young athletes a chance to experience our “tradition of champions.” Unlike many summer sports camps, this program features Baylor’s celebrated head coaches. This sport-specific approach allows campers to focus on one sport per week. In one week, campers will dial into their specific sport in morning sessions and then enhance their endurance with our performance training in the afternoon.

LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE Using Baylor’s vast network of community leaders, this program will be an unequalled summer experience for the motivated youths of today who will be tomorrow’s leaders. Servant leadership will be studied through guest speakers and case studies. Understanding individual strengths and weaknesses and how emotional quotient (EQ) impacts leadership will also be covered. The tactical skills needed for team building and uncommon leadership with purpose, a focus on needs for leadership, great leadership examples and team building will all be covered. THE COLLEGE PREP EXPERIENCE Baylor Summers is excited to offer one of the nation’s finest combos of SAT/ACT prep course and college counseling boot camp for the summer of 2019! Students target their preparation by choosing between course study for either the SAT or the ACT. Once their test is selected, they will spend the week preparing for their chosen standardized test and learning college counseling strategies by working with top-rated, professional and certified, college admission counselors. Students in this elite course will take full-length, mock tests that will be scored and analyzed for customized feedback to the student. This program is designed to raise students’ scores and help them excel on the testing through better knowledge and understanding of each of the tests. A well-informed and well-practiced student will result in a more relaxed and confident tester.

THE ULTIMATE BUSINESS EXPERIENCE What do graphene, blockchain and the nature of change, have to do with our future? What information and mindset will empower the people who will lead us into tomorrow’s business landscape? Campers will learn about modern day business concepts, markets and trends.

Local business leaders will share stories of their businesses and discuss startup ideas and successful business models. Competing business models and investment strategies will also be a fun part of this camp, and the powerful role that technology will play in the coming years will be discussed and debated in this firecracker-hot new camp experience featuring some of Baylor’s successful business leaders.

MERIT MATH Merit Math camp immerses rising fifth graders in an environment that encourages advanced thinking, creative problem-solving, and a lifelong love for learning. Students will strengthen their math skills, while using these skills in new and imaginative ways. Students will complete exercises that will require them to demonstrate critical thinking and teamwork in a fun, competitive class. Space is limited! Sign up now!

THE ART OF SPEAKING EXPERIENCE The leadership skill most often visible is the ability to speak in public and articulate ideas and messages. The Art of Speaking Experience is new for the 2019 summer and it is designed for both the beginner and advanced level student. Campers will have the option to choose from four separate tracks where they can focus on their specific area. We will offer a week-long track of: Debate, Mock Trial, and Model UN. If your camper is not sure what path best suits his/her interest, we also have the Stand & Deliver track which is a sampler of Debate, Mock Trial and Model UN. Whether helping younger students decide on an area of focus or helping a current high school team member hone his/ her skills, this camp will no doubt provide all participant with the skills needed to hit their desired goals. Through cross collaboration, campers will walk away with sampling from every track and experience one big, fun, week of shared energy. CREATIVE ARTS

DANCE Join us for a fun-filled dance camp and get a taste of all that Baylor dance has to offer! Led by Baylor dance instructor Elizabeth Roemer, students will study a variety of dance techniques including ballet, modern and jazz/hip-hop. Campers will also have opportunities to create their own movement studies. A special friends and family showcase will take place on the final Friday of camp in our Roddy Theater.

WOODWORKING Our woodworking camp is a camper favorite! Young woodworking enthusiasts will have the opportunity to read plans, design their own patterns, and bring their creations to life!

THE DIGITAL DESIGN EXPERIENCE Campers who are swept up in the maker movement will feel right at home with Baylor’s Digital Design Experience. Using a 3D printer and laser cutter, campers will redesign a speaker and its packaging. Campers will also be introduced to free software that allows them to design parts and learn

SCIENCE, ENGINEERING and TECHNOLOGY

CODING and ROBOTICS Campers will begin the week working with Kodu Game Lab, a visual programming tool that uses logic and problem-solving while introducing campers to conditions and sequence. They will use Xbox controllers to design, program and present their own unique video game, and will navigate the Xbox 360 Gamepad to build technical skills as they create enjoyable, fun, and challenging games. Campers will also use Alice 3, an innovative block-based programming environment, to create their own 3D games and animations. This class is designed to teach logical and computational thinking skills, fundamental principles of game-design and coding, and to continue camper’s exposure to object-oriented programming. They will learn to program character interaction, movement, and control keys within their own games and animations. Campers will adavance their robotics, coding and STEM education journeys using Edison with three programming languages: EdBlocks, EdScratch, and EdPly, taking exploration of robotics and coding to advanced levels.

ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE Coding, CSI, Cyber, Augmented Reality & Robotics – the STEM based approach to incredible discoveries is packed into one unforgettable experience. Students will use their hands, computers, tablets and brains to problem-solve the entire week. They will cover multiple problem sets from coding to crime fighting and investigation. Team work will also be a key element. The camp has been developed exclusively for Baylor Summers with joint ventures from the United Kingdom to the U.S. Space Coast. BAYLOR RESEARCH: MOLECULAR METHODS This intensive two-week long summer course offers the foundations and lab experiences covered in Baylor’s semester-long Molecular Methods course. Accepted students are trained to think like scientists in the context of biomedical and environmental research projects. Students will learn to execute techniques commonly used in cellular and molecular biology labs, including molecular cloning, PCR and quantitative PCR, protein expression systems, bioinformatics, and mammalian cell culture. Supervised training on instrumentation found in professional labs will provide the skills necessary to pursue advanced research opportunities. Chemistry is a prerequisite to attend.

SPECIAL INTEREST

LEX/RED This summer camp is unlike any we know of as it treats children to the joy and power of books, reading, authors and writing. Is your child the next famous writer? Does your child love books and reading? If so, this may be their dream camp. We will depart Baylor each morning for a day-trip adventure to top-rated, regional bookshops where staff will be awaiting our arrival. Once there, campers will be treated to the latest new book arrivals, news about upcoming new books, local authors who will speak and interact with the campers and finally from the shop owners themselves. We will also cover the process by which young writers like our campers can become published and examples of other young writers will be explored. This camp is operated as both a day and overnight camp where the group meets in the mornings for the trips and arrives back at Baylor at the end of the day. Campers described this camp last summer as a dream come true!

THE BOARDING SCHOOL EXPERIENCE One week, four boarding schools and a lifetime of fun memories await the campers of TBSE. Campers will explore and learn about the benefits of boarding schools and why they are so amazing from students and faculty at each school visited. The entire group of campers will move and visit a different school each day as they receive VIP treatment as visiting guests. There will be no selling or pressure of any type but rather the conversations and tours will be fun and informational and will show and share examples of how residential schools work and how they help students. This camp will also include fun off campus events in the Chattanooga area to wrap up the week and allow new friendships to flourish. OUTDOOR

WALKABOUT What is Walkabout? It’s an outdoor program that inspires Baylor students to be adventurous and now you can be part of the fun! Walkabout instructor Bett Adams ’02 along with student instructors will work with campers in all aspects of our famous outdoor program. Hiking, paddle boarding, climbing, and canoeing are among the activities.

THE CHEROKEE NATIONAL FOREST EXPERIENCE Campers will explore the Cherokee National Forest with visits to a new attraction each day: the Hiwassee, Ocoee, and Conasauga rivers; the Chilhowee trail system, including McKamey Lake and Benton Falls, a 70-foot waterfall; and the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, a 50-mile roundtrip train ride from Blue Ridge, Georgia, to Copperhill, Tennessee. The camp combines educational and experiential activities, and encour-

ages campers to enjoy and appreciate these natural and historical resources.

Campers will become familiar with local trails while learning bike repair and maintenance, and bike storage is provided on campus in a covered/locked facility.

While campers are encouraged to bring their own bikes, Baylor bike rentals are available for $30/week. Please note that Baylor bikes are limited and will be rented on a first come/first serve basis. Camper’s provide their own helmets.

OVERNIGHT CAMPS OVERVIEW After an amazing day of activity in a camper’s chosen session, Baylor’s overnight camp experience offers even more adventure and learning opportunities. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking and other activities against the beautiful backdrop of the Ten­ nessee River, or a cool, nightly climbing session in our on-campus rock climbing gym. Sports fans can catch a professional baseball game at the nearby Chattanooga Lookouts’ stadium, or a Chattanooga Football Club soccer match at Finley Stadium downtown.

Delicious meals are offered every evening in our state-of-the-art dining hall, and the the multi-purpose student center has plenty of space for relaxing. Games, movies, and ice cream socials will keep campers entertained all week long. When it is time for lights out, campers will find that our college-like dorm accommodations have all the amenities for a home away from home. All camp activities are supervised by trained Baylor staff, with a 1:7 ratio, and an on-call nurse every evening.
