bayfield:
where the water meets the soul
The “Gateway to the Apostle Islands,” “The Berry Capital of Wisconsin,” and “The Smallest City in Wisconsin” are all accolades Bayfield has earned. With a year-round population of 573 people, Bayfield is the smallest incorporated city in the state
Established in 1856, Bayfield, Wisconsin has always been a retreat for visitors looking to connect with the water. The unspoiled beauty of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands make our city the best place for superior scenery, stays, and experiences.
The landscape, the woods, the fresh water, and the spaciousness are what drew people like Elizabeth Downey to the area, but it’s the community that made it home. “I didn’t feel like I had a sense of belonging in a bigger city” she said. “I found my community up here.”
Downey can tell you all about how Bayfield was founded by entrepreneurs, capitalizing on the rich logging, fishing, and tourism industries on which this small city was built. When the Soo Locks in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan were created, it opened opportunities for Bayfield, which saw large-scale shipping and steamship tourism. Sometimes, as many as 10 steamers would arrive in one day, dropping off thousands of people eager to see what Bayfield offered.
Take Downey’s Historic Walking Tour in the summer to experience Bayfield’s rich history for yourself. Another must-stop for history buffs is the Bayfield Heritage Association. A scaled model railroad of the city will give you a glimpse of what Bayfield looked like in the “Golden Age of Railroads.” For those eager to dive into the area’s rich fishing heritage, the Bayfield
Maritime Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, with exhibits showcasing shipwrecks, traditional fishing nets, and historic boats.
Today, Bayfield holds titles such as: The “Gateway to the Apostle Islands,” “The Berry Capital of Wisconsin,” and “The Smallest City in Wisconsin,” With a year-round population of 573 people, Bayfield is the smallest incorporated city in the state. Travel magazines have named it the “Best Place to Visit” and have recognized the city for having some of the “Best Festivals.”
The Wisconsin Lake Superior National Scenic Byway, Highway 13, hugs the South Shore of Lake Superior and Chequamegon Bay and runs right through the center of the city. Coming from the south, you drive through the communities of Ashland and Washburn. If taking the scenic route from the east, you’ll drive through smaller communities like Port Wing, Cornucopia and Gaa-Miskwaabikaang (Red Cliff). All routes offer breathtaking views of the Lake and unique experiences of their own.
Bayfield is the Gateway to the Apostle Islands, an archipelago of 22 islands spread across 720 square miles off the north coast of Bayfield County. Twentyone of those islands make up the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore with 150 miles of shoreline. Madeline Island, the largest of the islands, is not
included in the Lakeshore designation, but offers its own adventures.
Visitors can take the Madeline Island Ferry from Bayfield to Madeline Island to experience shopping, dining, hiking and beaches. Walk, bike, or take your car over to the island where you’ll discover Island Time. Visit Big Bay State Park for sprawling sand beaches, camping and hiking. The ferry runs until the ice on the lake freezes over. In some years the ice road opens for car travel across the ice in February or March.
To see the other islands, take the Grand Tour on the Apostle Island Cruises or charter a boating or sailing trip. Many excursions can be tailored to your needs and wants. Experienced guides will put you in touch with nature’s beauty with views of pebble beaches, sand spits, and rock arches.
If you want to see the islands up close and personal, you can paddle through emerald waters while coasting through sandstone cathedral-like sea caves in a kayak. While planning your kayaking adventure, choose from a number of guided half-day, full-day, or multi-day trips. “The lake is the boss,” as one famous Bayfielder once said. Experienced leaders will instruct you on how to safely use the boats and can lead you to the most spectacular sites.
Lake Superior’s unmatched beauty is what keeps people coming back to experience all of what Bayfield has to offer. Come often and stay long. Explore Bayfield and the Apostle Islands for yourself. Start planning your adventure today.

Bayfield's Art Beat
Bayfield and the Apostle Islands have long been a mecca for artists inspired by Lake Superior's natural beauty. From painters to potters, jewelers to sculptors, you can find art in every Bayfield corner.
Start your arts journey at the corner of Manypenny Avenue and First Street. The Bell Street Collective features artists from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Kayla Piccaiano, owner of the Bell Street Collective, hopes to make art accessible while creating experiences.
“The goal is to build out the lounge experience with beer, wine, and infused mocktails,” she said. “People can come in and enjoy a beverage and see if the artworks are for them.” You can also find the collective’s sister gallery on Madeline Island, Bell Street Gallery and Art Bar. It’s a popular spot to hang out in the summer and listen to live music while delighting in a wood-fired pizza.
Back in Bayfield, on the corner of Rittenhouse and Second Street, you can watch Lissa Flemming of Silverwaves Jewelry silversmithing earrings, rings, and pendants. Inside the brownstone building across Rittenhouse Ave. is the Bayfield Artists Guild. Peruse art from nearly two dozen local artists and talk with the artists themselves who manage the shop.
On the corner of Rittenhouse and Broad Street, you’ll find another recent renovation. Rabbit Bird and Bear: Fine Art & Gifts is a shop with a gallery feel featuring pieces by native artists from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Owner Michelle LeBeau says that about a quarter of the gallery has art by Red Cliff artists.
“I really have a commitment that I’m going to have local art and local artists,” she said. “Visitors are amazed by the quantity and the quality of the artists and say over and over again, that this is very unique. There’s not a lot of places around the country that have this level of native art on display.”
You have many opportunities to discover and experience the arts across Bayfield and the Apostle Islands. In Washburn, you’ll find Ghost Ship Gallery where you can savor a refreshing beverage while browsing a dynamic array of local and regional artworks. The gallery also houses art studios, is an art supply shop. In Washburn, you’ll also find Artists Squared Studio and Gallery, owned and operated by artists couple J.R. LinceHopkins and Susan Lince. The gallery features landscapes, skyscapes, and abstract art from the duo.

cultural days, live music, and both winter and summer Pow Wows. These vibrant gatherings feature traditional singing, dancing, and educational demonstrations, offering a glimpse into the Anishinaabe way of life.
Boozhoo biiwidewinaadog! Gidanamikaagoog bi-dazhiitaayeg omaa Gaa-miskwaabikaang zayaagitooyaang! Hello to our guests! We welcome you as you come to spend time in our cherished home of Red Cliff!
Nestled at the northernmost tip of Wisconsin, the Red Cliff Nation is a breathtaking destination where the stunning red cliffs of Gichigami (Lake Superior) meet the rich traditions of the Anishinaabe people. Tribal Chairwoman Nicole Boyd describes it as the “cultural experience of the Northwoods and homelands of Anishinaabe,” offering visitors a unique blend of nature, history, and community.
Begin your journey at Frog Bay Tribal National Park, the first tribal national park in the United States. The rare boreal forest ecotype, coastal wetlands, and underdeveloped sand beach are unequaled wilderness experiences on the Bayfield Peninsula. You can see five of the Apostle Islands from the park’s beach: Oak Island (Mitigominikaani-minis), Hermit Island (Eshkwegwindeg-minis), Stockton Island (Wiisaakodewan-minis), Bear Island (Makwa-minis), and Michigan Island (Bagidaabii). The 1.7-mile rustic trail system with interpretive signs and bridges will leave you feeling more connected with nature and the Red Cliff community.
For a taste of local culture, stay right where all the action is at Legendary Waters Resort and Casino where every room has a view of Lake Superior. The resort hosts annual events like cribbage tournaments,
Dive deeper into Ojibwe traditions by joining one of two immersive camps. Biboon Gabeshiwin (Winter Camp) in February includes storytelling, snow snake, mitten making, and food preparation. In July, Anishinaabemowin Gabeshiwin (Language Camp) focuses on Ojibwe language immersion alongside cultural activities. Both camps are open to the public and provide a hands-on way to connect with the community.
No visit to Red Cliff is complete without sampling its culinary delights. Stop by Copper Crow Distillery, the first Indigenous-owned distillery in North America, known for its award-winning spirits crafted from whey, a cheese byproduct. Their zero-waste facility offers a unique tasting experience. For a taste of Lake Superior, visit the Red Cliff Fish Company, owned and operated by the tribe. Enjoy fresh catches like adikameg (whitefish) odoonibiins (herring) namegos (lake trout), all sustainably harvested from the lake.
Red Cliff is a destination where nature, culture, and community come together. Come experience Red Cliff, where the spirit of the Anishinaabe thrives along the shores of Gichigami.

SNOWY TRADITIONS START IN BAYFIELD
Create unforgettable winter memories in Bayfield! From world-class cross-country skiing to cozy retreats and a growing nightlife. Bayfield has everything you need to begin a new snowy tradition that will keep you coming back year after year.
“As great as Bayfield is in the summer, this is a place like no other in the winter,” said Julie Buckles, owner of Honest Dog Books . “Visitors are just awestruck, and it’s been really fun to see winter through their eyes.” The bookstore is open year-round with a healthy selection of new and used books. On cold winter nights, warm up with friends in the Outback, an events venue with music, movies, and live theater performances.
“Winter is our favorite season, and I love being open for other winter enthusiasts,” she said.
For those who want to get outside in winter months, the rewards are great. The shoreline of Lake Superior sparkles as the water splashes against rocks and shoreline
brush, encasing it in ice and creating natural frozen sculptures. Take a peaceful walk along the beach or at the Lakeshore Trail at Meyer’s Beach to see the famous ice caves from above. The sound of water colliding with ice fragments will be your background music.
For those who like a thrill, try dog sledding, downhill skiing, or snowmobiling. Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing will give you a ride of a lifetime. Once you feed and harness the dogs, hold on tight to the sled as they give you a ride through snow-covered Bayfield County forests.
Swoosh down the slopes at Mt. Ashwabay Ski and Recreation Area . This community ski hill gets its name from the surrounding towns Ash (Ashland) Wa (Washburn) Bay (Bayfield). The area boasts 40 km of classic and skate skiing trails that are groomed and tracked regularly. The stunning winter beauty of the mature forest ensures these trails are some of the best you’ll find in Wisconsin.
Bayfield is also ready for snowmobilers! The trail goes right through the city with ample parking and proximity to food, lodging, and entertainment.
Big Top Chautauqua’s Backstage on Highway 13 features live music year-round. Open mic night on Wednesdays and world-class weekend music acts will keep you in Bayfield longer.
Take advantage of exclusive winter deals and offers midJanuary through the beginning of March 2026 during the Snowy Traditions Start in Bayfield campaign. Start planning and book your snowy winter tradition. Turn to page 44 to find your cozy cabin, boutique-style motel, or historic bed and breakfast.
Let the snow inspire your next tradition in Bayfield Wisconsin.
YOUR WINTER WEEKEND ITINERARY
Jumpstart your snow day with a hot breakfast at Legendary Waters Resort & Casino and a coffee from Wonderstate
For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, hit the trails with a dog sled team! Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing will take you on an unforgettable ride through mature forests.
Enjoy lunch at Morty’s Pub in Bayfield where you’ll find American classics or grab a panini or soup at Howl Adventure Center and Café –a one-stop shop to gear up and fuel your outdoor adventure.
For a birds-eye view of the ice caves, strap on your snowshoes or ice cleats and hike the Meyer’s Beach Lakeshore Trail, part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. This trail becomes a magical winter adventure with a snow-covered canopy and views of glistening ice caves from above, a safe vantage point when ice conditions are not favorable for viewing from the ice.
Relax and have a fine dinner at Good Thyme Restaurant, Harbor Table, or the Fat Radish in Washburn, or come back to Bayfield and enjoy an entree at Pier Plaza or the Bayfield Inn Lakeside Dining Room and Lounge
Cozy up in your hotel, motel, bed and breakfast or vacation rental property and rest easy knowing you started a new tradition in Bayfield!
THE LAKE IS THE BOSS
“The lake is the boss,” Bayfield commercial fisherman Julian Nelson used to say, and he was right. As beautiful and inspiring as Lake Superior can be, its long reaches of cold water and fast-moving weather patterns can quickly turn a fun summer day into a potentially dangerous situation. A new, free program from Friends of the Apostle Islands can help keep you safe and informed this summer.
Known as “Wave Watch” the new program is a constellation of five SOFAR weather buoys deployed at strategic places in the waters of the Apostle Islands. Each buoy records and transmits vital information on wave heights, direction, wave period (the distance between wave crests) as well as water temperature, uploading that information every 30 minutes 24 hours a day via satellite. With just a simple scan of a QR code, kayakers, sailors, power boaters, beach goers or anyone interested in the lake can have that important information right at their fingertips.
“Wave Watch is important,” says Charlie Jarvis of Pikes Bay Marina, “because it provides real-time data –not forecasting. That is what makes it unique in this area and very valuable to anyone on the water in the Apostle Islands.”
STAY SAFE ON THE WATER THIS SUMMER WITH WAVE WATCH
Written by Jeff Rennicke, Executive Director of Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
A partnership between Friends of the Apostle Islands, the University of Wisconsin, and the National Park Service, Wave Watch buoys are set at the beginning of the boating season (usually by Memorial Day) and left in service the full boating season (until after Labor Day) in areas important for boaters. “I especially like the one out at Devils Island,” says Captain Sue Nelson
how to: explore the apostle islands
Discover rugged sea caves, clear water, sandy island beaches, and island forest paths.
SIGHTSEEING CRUISE:
See the most in the shortest amount of time! The outer-most islands are over 20 miles away from the mainland. This is a great, easy way to cover that distance. Enjoy an entertaining, narrated tour while you sit back and relax with your camera. (Look for these commercial services on pages 34-36.)
of Wild Pursuits Boat Charters, “as that can be the most treacherous part of a boat tour.” Other locations include the sea caves near Meyers Beach, Stockton Island and Julian Bay, the channel between Little Sand Bay and Sand Island, as well as off the tip of Long Island.
“These buoys can be your eyes on the water,” says Jeff Rennicke, Executive Director of Friends of the Apostle Islands. “Wherever boaters need information on current lake conditions – the right information, right for where they are going, right when they need it -- Wave Watch is there.”
To get your free Wave Watch QR code sticker to log on to see current conditions, or to learn how you can support Wave Watch, go to Friendsoftheapostleislands.org. And, stay informed about “the boss” our beautiful and powerful Lake Superior.
GUIDED KAYAK TOUR:
Explore at your own pace with a close-up view of the caves. Paddle through the caves in a tandem sea kayak. Half-day, full-day, or multiday excursions available. We highly recommend joining a guided trip with an experienced & trained outfitter, as Lake Superior can be unsafe. (Look for these commercial services on pages 34-36.)
FERRY OR WATER TAXI:
Take a water taxi for a day hiking on one of 22 islands. Madeline Island Ferry Line makes multiple trips each day to Madeline Island. As the official gateway of the Apostle Islands, Bayfield offers chartered island drop-off/pick-up, hiker day trips, and camper shuttles. (Look for these commercial services on pages 34-36.)
MORE TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE ON THE WATER
• Be sure your boat is suitable for Lake Superior conditions
• Be sure everyone aboard has and wears a Coast Guard approved PFD
• Dress in layers for colder temperatures on the water
• Check the forecast and current weather conditions before you launch
• Carry a fire extinguisher, marine radio, and all necessary safety equipment
• Know the rules of navigation, marine communication, and right of way
• Let someone on shore know your route and expected time of return
• Keep updated on quickly changing wave conditions with Wave Watch
CAPTAINED SAILING TRIP:
Book an adventure! Discover hidden coves and beaches with one of Bayfield's many sailboat charters. If you're feeling brave, take the helm. You never know... you may want to sign up for sailing classes afterward. (Look for these commercial services on pages 34-36.)
OR, STICK TO THE MAINLAND!
The mainland unit of the park features the most popular and photographed sea caves in the Apostle Islands. Try the Lakeshore Trail to take in the sea caves from above! The trail above the caves begins at the Meyers Beach parking lot, 18 miles north of Bayfield and 5 miles east of Cornucopia, on State Hwy 13.

BAYFIELD’S FISHING FAMILIES AND THEIR DEEP
Cast a line in any direction off the Bayfield Peninsula, and you’re bound to catch some fish, or someone whose family is part of the historic fishing industry. Names like Boutin, Nelson, Olsen, Nourse, and Bodin are common around Bayfield and the Apostle Islands, as their ancestors came to Bayfield to capitalize on the plentiful Lake Superior fish.
“It was hard work; it’s just like any other business,” recalls Bubs Boutin, a former commercial fisherman.
“Some years are really, really, good and other years are slow, but we stayed into it.
Fishing runs deep through the Boutin family. Bubs’ great-grandfather Ed Boutin started a fishing empire in Bayfield when he moved from Two Rivers, Wis. to Bayfield in 1870. The Boutins brought over 100 fishermen and their families, 650 gill nets, a fishing schooner and other supplies. Their relocation to
Bayfield doubled the population at the time.
With decades of fishing experience running through his veins, Bubs started fishing with his family for money in the summers when he graduated from 8th grade. After working for his dad and uncle for a number of years, he thought to himself, “I’m going to get my own boat. I could see profits coming in. I started out slow, but I ended up pretty big.”
Craig Hoopman, a sixth-generation Bayfield fisherman who owns and operates Hoop’s Fish , has seen changes to the fishing industry during his lifetime.
“For the majority of the history of Bayfield, the fish in Bayfield were caught and put on trucks or trains and shipped out of the area as a whole product,” he said. “Now, it’s completely different. We’re processing it locally.” Hoop’s specialty is smoked and fresh
CONNECTION TO LAKE SUPERIOR
fish caught that day, which visitors can enjoy at the dockside.
“They can come down here and physically see what happens,” Hoopman said. “They’re here when the boats are back, they can see the fish being offloaded… we process the product before 11 o’clock and the fish is breaded and served for lunch every single day until we sell out,” Hoopman said.
Hoop’s fishery was formerly owned and operated by his grandfather, Morris Boutin (Bubs’ brother). Hoopman has always known he wanted to be a fisherman, helping his grandparents inside the fishery since he was six years old.
Visitors looking for a taste of whitefish, trout, or herring can find dishes on any restaurant menu along the Bayfield Peninsula or straight from an area fishery.
Bodin Fisheries and Fish House is owned and operated by Bill Bodin, a fourth-generation member of the fishing industry in Bayfield. Bodin’s features smoked and fresh whitefish, trout, and herring, among other seasonal seafood. You’ll also find the Red Cliff Fish Company , owned and operated by the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa . The business has been in operation for five years. To learn more about the area’s rich fishing history, visit the Bayfield Maritime Museum (on First Street) or the Bayfield Heritage Association (on North Broad Street) in Bayfield.

HOUGHTON FALLS NATURE PRESERVE
0.75 MILES • DIFFICULTY: EASY
Located 3.5 miles north of Washburn. Turn on Houghton Falls Road and drive .5 miles to the parking area. The .75 mile trail traverses some beautiful natural features before ending at the edge of Lake Superior–far above the water. The waterfall flow is seasonal. Please note that the gate in the parking area will lock automatically at the posted closing time.
SISKIWIT RIVER SWENSON FOREST PRESERVE
SHORT TRAIL ALONG THE RIVER DIFFICULTY: MODERATE
Located .25 miles east of Cornucopia of County Highway C on Siskiwit Falls Road. A beautiful stretch of cascading waterfalls and coastal wetlands. The primitive trail runs along the east side of the Siskiwit River.
LOST CREEK FALLS
1.5 MILES • DIFFICULTY: MODERATE
From County Highway C just south of Cornucopia, turn on Trail Drive. Travel .5 miles to the trailhead and follow the signs 1.5 miles through the forest. This waterfall features a lovely 8-foot plunge, with smaller cascades below. The hike to the falls is through a scenic, forested area and the trail is well maintained with boardwalks and bridges.
TWIN FALLS
0.3 MILES • DIFFICULTY: EASY
Just outside of Port Wing on the south side of State Highway 13. Turn on Twin Falls Road and follow a short distance to find a place to park. Follow the signs up the .3 mile path to the observation deck looking down on Larson Creek flowing over the falls and the cavern beneath you.
5 MORGAN FALLS
0.75 MILES • DIFFICULTY: EASY
From Ashland, go south on State Highway 112/Sanborn Avenue, follow for about 9 miles. Go straight onto County Highway E, about 1.5 miles past the town of Sanborn. Turn left onto Ashland-Bayfield Road, and go south 4 miles. The parking area and trailhead will be on the left. The falls itself is an elegant cascade, diagonally traversing a 70 foot granite face.
