BAYFIELD AREA DARK SKIES SLOW DOWN & LOOK UP

Bayfield’s winter has always had a quiet kind of magic — the kind that shows up when the lake is still, the nights are long, and the sky actually has your attention. Dark Sky, Star Bright was created to celebrate exactly that.

From January 17–25, 2026, we’re inviting you to slow down, look up, and experience winter on Lake Superior in a new way. Over nine days, you can move between star-filled skies and warm, glowing saunas… between science and storytelling… between learning and simply being. You’ll find night sky talks with experts, guided stargazing, photography sessions, wellness workshops, and partner experiences with Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Superior Sauna & Steam — all woven together to help you reconnect with nature and with yourself.

And throughout the event, you can end each day with a guided sauna session

right on the lake. Sessions run daily from 4 to 8 pm and offer the chance to unwind, recharge, and (if you’re feeling brave) take a cold plunge beneath the winter sky. To reserve your spot, visit SuperiorSauna.com and look under the Events section — or simply follow the QR code included below.

This isn’t a rush-around, festival-all-day kind of event. It’s intentionally paced. Choose a night program, then warm up in town. Take a morning walk, book an afternoon sauna, then step into a dark sky program that evening. Bring friends, bring family, or make it a solo reset. However you do it, Bayfield will meet you with stars, quiet, and good company.

Use this guide to explore what’s happening each day, build your own itinerary, and make the most of your time under some of the clearest winter skies in Wisconsin.

APOSTLE ISLANDS STARRY SKIES INITIATIVE

Dear Friend,

The beauty of the islands doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. Our Starry Skies Initiative is an effort to raise awareness of the beauty of the night sky over the Apostle Islands and the need to work together to protect that resource. Use the QR code or visit our website to find out how you can be a star by supporting the Starry Skies Initiative of Friends of the Apostle Islands.

It begins with a glimmer, just a hint of brightness on the northern horizon. Then, it builds, rising like an aria. Soon, the night sky is glowing green and red, dancing with light, shimmering like diamonds. The aurora is dancing. The northern lights are gleaming above the Apostle Islands.

To watch the white sail of a full moon gliding across the stars, see the brushstroke of the Milky Way or the flicker of northern lights painting the night sky is to witness one of true the wonders of the world, a gift of nature.

And there are very few places in the world where that gift is on display more clearly than the Apostle Islands. Friends of the Apostle Islands would like to thank the sponsors of their Starry Skies Initiative including Island Gateway Gallery & Gathering, the John R. Flanagan Foundation, Apostle Islands Booksellers, Keeper of the Light, Silverwaves Jewelry, and Good Flower Farm.
