Mayor Ryan Bater of North Battleford
Bater spoke about City initiatives familiar to local residents, such as downtown revitalization, ongoing community safety initiatives and UPAR. Bater spoke of the most recent budget. The previous year’s budget was “a significant challenge” to the City, he said, due to discontinuation of the payments in lieu from SaskPower and royalty payments from SaskEnergy. “Last year the hit to the City was $1.2 million, which is huge,” said Bater. However, “there were changes in this budget that were very welcome,” said Bater, noting SaskEnergy payments have been redirected back to the City of North Battleford. Bater noted the City was vocal about the changes in last year’s budget, and he thanked the province for making changes this year. “We really appreciate being listened to,” said Bater. B’ford to direct $115,000 to SHNB By Josh Greschner Staff Reporter
Saskatchewan Hospital New Beginnings will be closer to reaching its $8 million fundraising goal due to a contribution from the Town of Battleford. Town council agreed at a meeting Monday that it will contribute approximately $115,000 to the new Saskatchewan Hospital.

In return, plans are underway for the Town to receive naming rights of a space in the new building. Saskatchewan Hospital New Beginnings is fundraising $8 million for furniture and equipment, and asked the Town of Battleford for $5 per person each year for five years. New Beginnings used 4,429 as Battleford’s population, a 2016 census fig-
ure. The amount, $115,000, assumes Battleford’s population to be 4,600. Details of what amount the town will obtain at what time will be determined at a future date; if taxpayers will pay over one year, three or five. Former mayor Chris Odishaw attended the meeting. He said retaining the hospital in the Battlefords was “one of those

Tuesday afternoon, longtime resident Leola Macdonald was presented with a lifetime membership in the City of North Battleford Historic Archives, in recognition to her contributions to the organization over the past decade. The award was presented by archivist Tammy Donahue Buziak at River Heights Lodge. Macdonald was joined by members of her family and fellow archives volunteers, who credited her for her work on projects such as the centennial celebration of 2013 as well as the corner stores project. The corner stores display was set up for that day as part of the recognition. Watch for a special Everybody Has a Story feature about Macdonald in next week’s Tuesday News-Optimist. Odishaw said he considers the outcome lucky, since the amount to be raised could have been $10 million. “The lion’s share of that ($8 million) is coming from some large provincial jurisdiction.” Continued on Page 6
