A Message from Our Director Dear Residents:

MISSION STATEMENT Committed to providing fun, safe, and innovative open space and recreational opportunities that will enrich the quality of life for our residents.

The Chicago Tribune’s Top Workplaces list is based on results from employee engagement surveys administered by Energage, a research firm that specializes in organizational health and workplace improvement. Organizational values shape the culture, which in turn affects everything from employee satisfaction to customer engagement. This award is a clear reflection of our team’s talent and the extent to which they collaborate in order to provide a high level of value to our community. For a local governmental entity, this is not an easy feat. Our efforts at recognizing the importance of achieving a positive work/life balance and the establishment of a strong internal culture provide the cornerstone for maintaining a creative and energetic workplace environment.

The Park Board Your Park Board is composed of five, nonpaid commissioners selected by you to serve varying terms. The Board is primarily a policy-making body that reflects the needs and interests of all taxpayers. The Park Board meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St., at 7 p.m. Please feel welcome to attend. • January 16 • February 20 • March 19

Patrick J. Callahan John Tilmon Vice President President

It’s no secret that having talented, caring and dedicated employees and giving them a positive employee experience leads to increased productivity, retention of top talent and opportunities for growth and development. With that being said, I’m thrilled to announce Batavia Park District has received the distinguished honor of being named a Chicago Tribune Top Workplace in 2023!

Sam Bell Treasurer

Batavia Park District has also recently been recognized as an Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency by the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA). This program gives recognition to park and recreation agencies that go above and beyond in dedicating themselves to offering quality programs and services designed to fulfill their community’s needs. In late fall, the Park District underwent a comprehensive evaluation process to determine whether we met the stringent criteria. On the day of the evaluation, a review team toured pertinent facilities and parks and reviewed general management procedures, finance and business operations, personnel standards, recreation services, legal documentation and other materials including mission statements, goals and safety manuals. Our staff puts their best foot forward every day to make Batavia Park District a special place for our residents. I’m grateful their hard work has been recognized and I’m proud of all of them for this huge accomplishment as less than 10% of park and recreation agencies in the state of Illinois receive state accreditation. Happy Holidays!

New Horizons Preschool is a program of the Batavia Park District that was founded in 1996 to provide young children with the skills and experiences that will help them thrive in Kindergarten and beyond. New Horizons offers a unique experience of providing an opportunity for social and emotional growth through a play-based experience. Building selfesteem and confidence is the base of our curriculum, allowing the children to be successful. This curriculum sets us apart from other area preschools. A typical day may include dress-up, reading books, science experiments, building fun objects, puzzles, crafts and music, plus play time outside on our own playground or indoors in our own gym. Students benefit from these experiences because they gain skills in socialization, fine and large motor skills, as well as cognitive development, plus they have fun while doing it. We nurture independent, creative thinkers.

Young 3s Program • For a first away-from-parent experience. • Emphasis on socialization skills. • Pull-ups are allowed in this class only. Parents must be available to change their child. • Children must have independent bathroom skills.

DANC E

Tutu Tiny, Tutu Cute & Tutu Fun Ballet and Tutu Tap

Dance Class Helpful Tips

Ages 3-5

Tutu Tote: Dance shoes can be expensive, especially with growing feet! Please consider donating your “Tutu Tight” dance shoes to the “Tutu Tight Tote.” This container will remain in the dance room. When your dance shoes become “Tutu” tight, place them in the tote and hopefully a pair inside will fit your dancer. There is no exchange of money. Simply donate “tight” and hopefully find “just right.”

Tutu Tiny, Cute and Fun Ballet, and Tutu Tap are introductory-level classes built around fun, recognizable children’s music and props to learn basic directions, terms, positions and more. Young ballet dancers gain social and listening skills, confidence and expression, as well as physical development and coordination. Tutu Cute Ballet will not meet Jan. 15

Dance Attire: Please wear clothing that allows for a full range of motion. No denim is allowed. Most dancers are comfortable in leotards/tights or leggings.

Me & My Grown Up Ages 2-2.5 with adult Me & My Grown-Up is a class for first-time dancers with their favorite adult by their side, to learn and promote class expectations, confidence and explore dance.

Dance Shoes: Dance shoe requirements are noted for each class. You may wait until the week after class begins (Week No. 2) to purchase shoes in the event that a class is canceled. Although we never want to cancel a class, low enrollment may cause class cancellations. Visitors: Thank you for respecting our NO VISITORS policy. We love our fan club, but visitors pull a dancer’s focus from the instructor. In addition, students feel uncomfortable to learn with other parents (strangers) in the room. Thank you for your cooperation! Please note: Winter session dance classes are non-recital classes.

Ages 18+

This class is for those overly-friendly dogs that need to learn to control themselves when saying hello! We will practice having your dog sit nicely to be petted and learn to be calm while meeting strangers and/or their dog. Note: This class does not focus on dog-to-dog interactions, but questions about this will be answered.

This class is all about teaching your dog some fun tricks. And the best part is, we’ll work on whatever tricks you choose! We’ll supply a list to help you choose what you’d like to do, or you can come with some ideas of your own.

When registering, please register an adult for the class, not your dog. To register for any of the pet training programs, participants must be age 18 or older.

Crate Training Ages 18+ The trainer will teach you skills and suggest tools specific to your dog in order to help him or her relax in a crate both alone and with distractions present. We will practice crate manners in our training room, but you will learn how to practice at home as well.

Don’t have a lot of time to make cards? These fast and fabulous cards will wow your recipients but only take a short time to create. We will make four cards in an hour. Each session will feature different cards, and will include birthday, thank you, thinking of you and a seasonal card.

All supplies included and templates will be provided to duplicate at home. Please bring your own paper cutter if you have one.

Got Neuropathy?

Ages 18+

Ages 18+

The truth is that diets do work. The question is, why do they work for some and not others? Why did a diet work at one point in your life and not now? Why can you lose the weight, and then it all comes back? In this workshop with Dr. Nathan Conroy, we’ll dive deep into metabolism, hormones, and genetics and how these can play a role in what diet may be the best for you

If you have stabbing, burning or tingling in your feet or hands, it could be neuropathy. More than 20 million Americans are estimated to suffer from peripheral neuropathy. In this workshop, we’ll discuss cuttingedge conservative and natural approaches to treat neuropathy and the symptoms that result from it.

Mindful Meditation & Stress Management Ages 14+ Train your mind the way you train your body for the perfect antidote to daily stress. Spring Exhibit | March – July 2024

Markets and Meals Batavia’s got to eat! When many Americans adjusted to working remotely during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, grocery store workers adjusted to life as essential workers. If the people who get us our food didn’t get to work, the community didn’t get to eat. This exhibit explores the essential role grocers, butchers and bakers have played in the health of Batavia from the city’s early days of general stores to today’s big box retailers. With intriguing artifacts, an interactive play space, photos and stories, museum visitors from March to July will learn more about the stores that have kept Batavia fed. Visitors will also learn how fragile our food systems can be and how Batavians have helped each other weather times of want. When America mobilized for the war effort in the 1940s, ration books and Victory Gardens helped ensure there was enough for all. Small grocers extended credit and churches organized mutual aid. Find out how Batavians today are fighting food insecurity in our own backyard.

Barco Products is a proud partner of the Batavia Park District Memorial Program.

Batavia Park District

Memorial Program Celebrate and commemorate a loved one’s life or express sympathy or condolences for the loss of a friend or family member with a memorial tree or bench. The District offers several options to memorialize your loved one or to mark a special date or occasion. Placement along the Batavia Riverwalk is no longer an option for a memorial bench or tree due to spatial limitations.

Memorial Trees

Memorial trees leave a lasting legacy, which will grow stronger and blossom year after year. Trees are planted twice a year (spring and fall). The cost for a Memorial Tree is $800, and includes the tree, stone marker, and installation. Please visit bataviaparks.org for a full list of available trees.

Memorial Benches

Memorial benches add beauty to a park and provide a useful amenity for patrons to enjoy as they relax in their surroundings. The cost for a 4-foot bench is $2,550, and a 6-foot bench is $3,000, which includes the bench, plaque, and installation.

Batavia Park District Pet Memorial Program The Batavia Park District recognizes that many people consider their pets to be part of their family. Commemorate the life of your beloved pet by purchasing a brick or agility equipment through the District’s Pet Memorial Program. The cost for a pet brick is $200. • Memorial Bricks • Memorial Benches • Agility Equipment The District has selected several agility pieces that can be purchased through the Pet Memorial Program.

For more information on how to purchase a memorial item, please call 630-879-5235. 80 | Winter 2024

Policies NSF Checks Checks returned for non-sufficient funds will be assessed a $20 service fee.

Program Refund Policy Refunds will be considered for the following reasons: • Class cancellations/Park District closings will result in a refund that will be mailed to the person who was enrolled in the class unless the participant is a minor, the refund will go to the parent/guardian who signs the registration form. If you wish to apply this refund to another class, you must notify the Park District immediately. • Refund requests received 5 business days before the first class meeting will be accepted, less a service charge. If application is received less than 5 business days prior to start of program and it causes enrollment to fall below minimum and the spot cannot be filled; no refund will be given. • Refund requests received after the second meeting of the program will not receive a refund with the exception of a written medical excuse prior to completion of the program. A $5 service charge and program supply costs will be deducted from the amount of refund for each program, including medical reasons. Medical excuses will result in a pro-rated refund based upon the number of classes held prior to the date listed on the physician’s excuse. If program falls below the minimum required and the spot cannot be filled, no refund will be given. • Applications for refunds for one-day programs (with the exception of Klub Fun) must be submitted 5 business days prior to class starting in order to receive a refund. Refunds will not be accepted after the class has ended. • All refunds will be issued in the form of how payment was originally made when a refund application is approved before the class starts. Checks are processed by the Batavia Park District front office bi-monthly and sent via mail.

See parents’ manuals or description for more information. • Please allow two weeks to receive refunds. Refunds will be applied to any outstanding balance owed on any programs or activities..

Inclement Weather Policy For program and event updates or cancellations, please visit bataviaparks.org/rainout. The umpires or instructors decide the status of play after program starts. They will base their decisions on the field conditions and the likelihood of rain or thunder.

Nonresident Fee Policy The Batavia Park District residents make a significant contribution to the operation of the park district via property taxes. The boundaries were established with the formation of the park district in 1969. A copy of a map showing the park district boundaries is printed in the brochure and available at the park district office. Persons living outside the park district boundaries may be required to pay an additional fee to register for programs.

Electronic Signature Readers Electronic signature readers eliminate the need for you to complete a paper form every time you register. The electronic reader captures your signature and confirms that you’ve agreed to the liability waiver and release of all claims. Signatures will stay on file for 12 months, and after that time you will simply stop in to sign the waiver again. If you are a regular phone-in customer, we will need to capture your signature in person in order for you to do subsequent registrations by phone. Online registration is not affected.
