A Message from Our Director

Dear Residents:

Your voice matters and now is the perfect time to share it. As Batavia continues to grow and evolve, the Batavia Park District remains focused on listening, adapting and delivering meaningful experiences that serve our entire community. I am thrilled to announce that we are launching a Strategic Master Plan that will shape the next five years of park improvements, program development and public spaces. This plan will serve as our roadmap and it starts with you.

We’ve partnered with Next Practice Partners, LLC, a national leader in parks and recreation master planning, to help us with this important initiative. Together we will ensure Batavia’s park system remains vibrant and responsive to your needs. We welcome you to share your voice by taking our community needs assessment, available Aug. 1 through 31 at YourFunIsOurBusiness.com. Your feedback will play a vital role in shaping the future of parks and recreation in Batavia for years to come.

We also invite you to celebrate a major milestone with us this summer — the grand opening of the Patrick J. Callahan Community Center. Join us on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 8 a.m. to noon at 150 Houston St. A ribbon cutting ceremony with remarks will be held at 10:30 a.m.

This new community facility is designed for all ages and interests — from young children exploring in our new STEAM-based PlayLab to older adults staying active and connected. The day will feature tours, demonstrations, instructor meet-and-greets, refreshments and giveaways.

The center includes:

• The Sky Loft and River Room for programs, gatherings and special events

• A makerspace in the Depot Museum Annex for hands-on learning and creativity

• New space for Batavia Access Television and expanded storage for the Batavia Historical Society

• Office space for recreation staff and beautiful views of the Riverwalk and Depot Pond

This project is made possible by a $2.8 million Illinois Park and Recreational Facility Construction Grant and the Batavia Park District’s existing fund balances as well as a generous $430,000 donation from the Batavia Historical Society. There was no need for a tax rate increase to fund this project.

Thank you for your continued support. Together, we will shape a strong and lasting future for Batavia.

All the best,

John Tilmon President

Help Your Preschooler Prepare for Kindergarten

Morning and afternoon sessions are available for two or five days a week. Register at bataviaparks.org. For more details, turn to page 21.

Register Your Child for a Life Coaching Class

Life coaching classes help kids build self-esteem through fun activities. In the “Have the Slime of Your Life: Autumn Stretchy Life Coaching for Kids Lab,” kids aged 5-13 will learn a growth mindset while making fall-colored slime. They’ll take home slime and receive tips on stretching their thinking. Other workshops include “Self-esteem through Holiday STEM Ice Cream” and “Grinch Goo-tastic Holiday Slime Lab.”

Try a New Fitness Class

Fall is also a great time to start a new fitness routine. Do you love to dance? Shake it off in two new fitness classes this fall, WERQ, a cardio dance class, and Jukebox Dance Fitness, a class with easy-to-follow moves and pop music. If relaxation is more your thing, don’t miss our new Candlelight Yoga series in the new Callahan Community Center. This gentle class is the perfect way to unwind after a long day.

Patrick J. Callahan Community Center

On Aug. 9 Batavia residents are invited to take a first look at Batavia Park District’s newest facility, the Patrick J. Callahan Community Center. Situated across from the Batavia Riverwalk, this new community resource offers expanded multigenerational programming for toddlers through seniors, room rentals and an enrichment program for ages 3-5.

The new community center has a staffed front desk open from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. where visitors can register for programs or get assistance. The facility also is home to meeting and program rooms with views of the Riverwalk, a Museum Annex for Batavia Depot Museum that will house collections and workrooms, plus offices for park district recreation staff and Batavia Access TV. The community center will also offer New Adventures PlayLab, a new STEAM-based enrichment program for ages 3-5.

“Our vision for a new community center is inspired by the voices of our residents,” said Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela. “Through

the 2022 community needs assessment survey, it became clear that families are seeking more spaces for connection, learning and recreation,” she noted.

“This community center will be a place where generations come together, from children discovering new interests to seniors staying active and engaged,” Niemela said. “It’s more than a building; it’s a reflection of our shared values and commitment to a vibrant, inclusive community. We’re excited to bring this vision to life for everyone who calls Batavia home.”

The grand opening kicks off at 8 a.m. and runs through noon and includes tours, mini classes, meet-and-greets with park district instructors and refreshments. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m.

The Callahan Community Center is named in honor of Patrick J. Callahan, a 27-year Batavia Park District Park Board commissioner and longest-serving Park Board member who retired from the board in May.

This project is funded by a $2.8 million Park and Recreational Facility Construction Grant and Batavia Park District existing fund balances, as well as a $430,000 donation from the Batavia Historical Society. There was no need for a tax rate increase to fund this project.

Programs for all ages

The Callahan Community Center’s first floor River Rooms and second-floor Sky Loft rooms will host classes, programs and events for all, from infants and toddlers to seniors.

Over the past 200 years, physicians, advocates, and government agencies have all shaped mental health policies. These stakeholders have often taken different approaches, and tension has existed between care and custody as responses to people with mental health conditions.

GENERAL INFORMATION Policies

NSF Checks

Checks returned for non-sufficient funds will be assessed a $20 service fee.

Program Refund Policy

Refunds will be considered for the following reasons:

• Class cancellations/Park District closings will result in a refund that will be applied to the household account as a credit towards future registrations. Upon request, refunds can also be paid by check or issued directly to a credit card if the request is made within 45 days of the original purchase. If you wish to apply this refund to another class, you must notify the Park District immediately.

• Refund requests received 5 business days before the first class will be accepted, less a service charge. If application is received less than 5 business days prior to start of program and it causes enrollment to fall below minimum and the spot cannot be filled; no refund will be given

• Refund requests received after the second meeting of the program will not receive a refund with the exception of a written medical excuse prior to completion of the program. A $5 service charge and program supply costs will be deducted from the amount of refund for each program, including medical reasons. Medical excuses will result in a pro-rated refund based upon the number of classes held prior to the date listed on the physician’s excuse. If program falls below the minimum required and the spot cannot be filled, no refund will be given.

• Applications for refunds for one-day programs (with the exception of Klub Fun) must be submitted 5 business days prior to class starting in order to receive a refund. Refunds will not be accepted after the class has ended.

• All refunds will be issued in the form of how payment was originally made when a refund application is approved before the class starts. Refunds to a credit card can only be issued within 45 days of the original purchase.

• All refunds applied for are subject to a $5 service charge. Instances where fees are $10 or less, the service charge will be based on 10%.

• Kids’ Club, Klub Fun, New Horizons and Camp SUN-sational participants are subject to different terms of refund and withdrawal policy. See parents’ manuals or description for more information.

• Refunds will be applied to any outstanding balance owed on any programs or activities.

Inclement Weather Policy

For program and event updates or cancellations, please visit bataviaparks.org/rainout. The umpires or instructors decide the status of play after program starts. They will base their decisions on the field conditions and the likelihood of rain or thunder.

Out-of-District Fee Policy

Batavia Park District residents make a significant contribution to the operation of the Park District via property taxes. The Park District boundaries were established with the formation of the Park District in 1969. A map showing the boundaries is included in the brochure and available at the Park District Administrative Offices. Persons living outside the boundaries may be required to pay an additional fee to register for programs.

Electronic Signature Readers

Electronic signature readers eliminate the need for you to complete a paper form every time you register. The electronic reader captures your signature and confirms that you’ve agreed to the liability waiver and release of all claims.

Signatures will stay on file for 12 months, and after that time you will simply stop in or complete an online registration to sign the waiver again. If you are a regular phone-in customer, we will need to capture your signature in person in order for you to do subsequent registrations by phone. Online registration is not affected.

Program Cancellations

All programming, events and trips are subject to cancellation up until the time of the program, event or trip if patron and staff safety is a concern. Programs not meeting the minimum registration will be canceled, and refunds will be issued in the form of a check.

Cancellation decisions will be made one week in advance of the beginning of the program in most cases. All participants in canceled classes will be notified by Park District staff and will receive a full refund.

Class Transfers

If you wish to transfer to a different class, please contact Customer Relations to complete a Transfer Form during business hours. The form is also available at bataviaparks.org: Programs & Events > Registration Information > Forms.

Waiting List

Many of our classes have Registration limits due to facility space and staff limitations, therefore we cannot always guarantee you will be enrolled in the class of your choice. The Park District maintains waiting lists for classes that have reached their maximum Registration and encourages everyone to be placed on a waiting list. We will open additional classes whenever possible.

Instructors and leaders are not allowed to accept any registrations and are not allowed to give authorization for more people to register than the listed maximum. Your cooperation is appreciated. Registration deadlines have been set for each class. Please register prior to Registration deadline. We try to establish class status at least one week prior to starting dates. Please register at least one week prior to class unless designated otherwise.

The Batavia Park District intends to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act by making reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. If you or someone you know will require an accommodation for District service, or have any questions about the District’s compliance, please contact Batavia Park District’s ADA Compliance and Inclusion officer Brittany Meyer at 327 W. GENERAL INFORMATION

Inclusion Services for Individuals with Disabilities

Batavia Park District works collaboratively with the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association (FVSRA) to provide reasonable modifications for individuals with disabilities who need assistance to participate successfully in programs.

We strive to foster independence and active participation in the least restrictive environment. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), modifications can vary from program to program and are determined following an intake assessment conducted by a team member from FVSRA.

Modifications can include one or more of the following:

• Activity modification

• Adaptive equipment

• Additional staff support

• Sign Language interpreters

• Staff training

• Support plans for behavior, diabetes, or seizure disorders

Requesting Inclusion Services

Inclusion services can be requested at the time of registration in person or by phone. If registering online, click the “Contact Us” option in the top menu bar or call the park district at 630-879-5235 to place your request.

Timeline for Services

For new participants, FVSRA aims to complete an intake assessment within one week of receiving your request for inclusion services. Once an individual has a completed intake on file, the average time to determine and coordinate modifications is two weeks. To provide the best customer service, we ask for at least two weeks’ notice before the start of the program to arrange modifications.

Good Time Guarantee

At Batavia Park District, we are committed to providing the public with high quality recreation programs. Our residents are important to us and we feel they deserve quality at all times.

We are so confident that our recreation programs provide high quality and enjoyment that we are backing it with a policy called the “Good Time Guarantee.”

Our promise and policy is as follows:

The Batavia Park District will give you a full refund if requested by the beginning of the third class if you are unsatisfied with the quality of instruction, your child’s inability to adapt emotionally in the class, or the skill level is not appropriate for the participant.

Guidelines

• Participant must attend the first two classes of the program.

• Policy applies to recreation programs only. A recreation class is defined as a program where Park District personnel teach activities or skills over a period of six or more classes. This policy does not apply to Quarry passes, special events, trips, New Horizons Preschool, Day/ Sport Camps, Kids’ Club and Klub Fun and Youth/Adult Leagues.

• The “Good Time Guarantee” refund form must be filled out appropriately and received prior to the third class meeting. Forms are available at the Recreation offices.
