If you don’t go through the experience, you will not know. There are many boundaries that need to be crossed. Stepping into the frame is the first one.
Sin transitar, sin acercarse, nadie puede conocer. Los límites tienen que ser atravesados. Cruzar el encuadre es el primer paso.
The film is an invocation in order to get closer to the now deceased woman that used to live in the house. Because I have no chance of meeting her in the flesh. That’s why I must research, use my imagination, place my body.
Hacer la película como una invocación para poder acercarse a la mujer ya fallecida que vivió en mi casa. Porque no hay manera de conocerla en carne y hueso. Hay que indagar, imaginar; hay que “poner el cuerpo”.
Elvira Zipitria, Ira, was a pioneer in many ways. An extraordinary woman who lived the greater part of the XX century and who had to break many stereotypes in order to defend herself, her Basque language and culture. Daughter of her time, she paved her way amongst multiple contradictions, and remained firmly standing in the underground movement she had to live through. I myself have gone through her lights and shadows, and my own. The aim was not only to understand her story, her fight, what she did, but above all, an attempt to understand what was her internal life experience.
Elvira Zipitria, Ira, fue una pionera en muchos sentidos. Una mujer fuera de lo común que vivió gran parte del siglo XX y que tuvo que romper con muchos estereotipos para defenderse a sí misma, a su lengua y cultura vascas. Hija de su tiempo, se hizo camino entre múltiples contradicciones, manteniéndose firme en la clandestinidad que le tocó vivir. Para hacer la película yo misma he transitado por sus luces y sombras, a través de las mías propias. El objetivo ha sido no solo conocer su historia, su lucha, lo que hizo, sino sobre todo un intento de comprender cuál fue su experiencia vital interior.
