We are now in 2017 and the “Christmas in Basel” is still going strong offering much for visitors to marvel at and enjoy. From 23 November to 23 December, it will once more brighten up the city with contemplative lights, impressive decorations and ethereal notes. The heart of the “Basel Christmas” are the markets on the Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz with 181 stalls. There is also much to discover outside of Grossbasel: In Kleinbasel, on the other side of the festively illuminated Mittlere Brücke, the Claraplatz or the Rheingasse tempt visitors to come and browse a while.

The Basel Christmas Market will be celebrating its 40 th anniversary this year. The market has already delighted its visitors for many, many years. In its first year, in 1978, the Basel Christmas Market was held on Claraplatz. It then expanded to Barfüsserplatz, which became its sole location at the time of its 20 th anniversary. Since 2011, the market has grown to such an extent it now covers Münsterplatz, one of the most beautiful squares in Basel.
