At Barton Peveril, teachers will not simply tell you what you need to know; they will expect you to read around your subject and bring ideas to share in class. Pre-work will form an important part of your personal learning plan, ensuring that you are well-prepared for each lesson and able to gain the most from your teachers’ expertise. There will, of course, be homework, coursework and assignments too.

Life skills for education and work As well as the knowledge you’ll pick up on your courses, you’ll also leave college with a range of life lessons and essential skills that are transferable to any further study or workplace. These include effective oral and written communication, accessing and analysing information, essay writing, research and presentation skills and exam techniques.

Becoming more independent means taking a much more mature approach to studying. You will need to develop the research skills that enable you to find things out for yourself and ask for help when you don’t understand something. You will be studying for as many hours outside of timetabled lessons as you will in the classroom. Private study periods mean you can get much of your work completed in College if you use your time wisely and stick to an agreed plan.

Materials for study success We strongly recommend investing in a laptop, tablet or hand-held device to provide quick and easy access to a variety of online resources via our free campus-wide WiFi network. This will enable you to get a great deal of work completed during the college day.

If you have your sights set on competing in your chosen sport at top flight level, our Elite Sport Programmes provide the perfect grounding for your future success. Anyone can apply for a place on the Elite Sport Programmes. You must have a suitable level of fitness to undertake these programmes and they must be taken alongside a full-time programme of study. The programmes are designed to develop promising and talented young players physically and technically. They will help improve your performance in the sport, as well as within your studies, providing you with a unique chance to combine training and playing with full-time education.

You’ll have the opportunity to train three times a week alongside your studies, which includes two skills based/technical sessions and one strength and conditioning session. EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) lets you research a subject of your choice, independently. You will decide whether the outcome of your project is an extended written investigation, a performance, a piece of artwork, a film, a report, or something else entirely. It is beneficial to link your project with an area you wish to pursue in the future, at degree level or for your career, but it can also relate to a hobby or interest. You will develop skills in independent planning, research and critical analysis, which Universities

and employers welcome because of their importance at degree level and in the workplace. Many Russell Group universities even make reduced offers if you are predicted an A or A* in your Extended Project Qualification.

If you are looking to progress on to an apprenticeship or other training route, we can help you by identifying possible employers, supporting you with the application process, assisting with online assessments and offering interview practice.

Our work experience programme benefits from excellent links with renowned employers who provide challenging and constructive placement opportunities.

Together, we will work on skills that will give you the best chances of success at job interviews and selection panels for apprenticeships and competitive sponsored degrees.

Employability Throughout the year there are visits from a range of local employers. Some of these are industry insight days with a variety of speakers. Others see employers supporting your academic study by linking theory and practice. There are workshops on CV building, applications and networking with employers all designed to help you reach your full potential. Employability Week gives you an opportunity to find out about future employment, careers, training and apprenticeship opportunities. More than 70 local employers and organisations engaged with these events last year.

Every student has a dedicated work experience week in the second year. Additionally, some students will undertake placements regularly across the year (e.g. three hours per week). All students are strongly encouraged to secure placements during their time at College and some students will have access to subject-specific placements including Conservation, Health and Teaching and Early Years.

Working while you study Many students will undertake part-time work whilst at college and our careers team will support you in sourcing and successfully gaining employment. We recognise the skills this can develop but ask that you do not exceed on average 12 hours of paid work per week as this can affect your performance in your studies. We will help you to identify the skills you have gained during this work that are relevant to your longer-term career aspirations.

Volunteering We encourage all students to contribute something to the local community, through voluntary work and charitable fundraising. For example, our conservation volunteers work in collaboration with local organisations to provide practical support to projects. Universities and employers view volunteering as an excellent addition to applications.

These options provide more opportunities for assessment via coursework. They are a fantastic option for many students to achieve excellent grades that lead to university, apprenticeships or employment We have a limited number of one year courses designed to enable you to move onto a Level 3 mixed or vocational programme the following year. See page 94.
