New Milton Rugby Club

Glendalyn House, Fernhill Lane 2015.

New Milton has many sporting facilities of which to be proud. Tennis, bowling, cricket and football are all played to a very high standard in our parish. However, we can be particularly proud of our rugby club which will be celebrating its centenary in 2024. In the immediate aft ftermath t of World War One and the Spanish influenza epidemic there was a great desire to return to a peaceful life. On 26th September 1920 when the Recreation Ground was unveiled and handed over to the people of New Milton, the Reverend John Edward Kelsall, the driving force behind the creation of ‘The Rec’ said that he hoped that when people were ‘out of health, despondent or ill-humoured’ they would be ‘re-created’ by sport rtt on the ground. New Milton was rapidly developing with houses being built and many people moving into the area. A number of the new arrivals were ex-serv rvicemen v or were middle class families whose sons had attended rugby playing public schools. The New Milton Advert rtiser t of 10th May 1947 report rted t on the first rugby club dinner aft fter t World War 2. Some of the original members

8

of the club are recorded as stating that the first game took place in 1924 when a New Milton rugby club team took on a BBC team. The match was played on the Recreation Ground and was described as a ‘real how-do-youdo aff ffair’. f The first president of New Milton Rugby Club was Major Alfred Trestrail DSO. He was a local solicitor, parliamentary ryy candidate, staunch support rter t of the local British Legion and the town clerk of New Milton Urban District Council from 1926 to 1932. He was also a founder member of the Grove Tennis Club, now Hale Gardens, as well as on the committee of New Milton football, bowling and cricket clubs. The second President, Wilfred

Wilfred Hasseldine. Club president and owner of Glendalyn.

Hasseldine, was a great support rter t of the club. He was a master builder who had built Broadcasting House in 1931 and soon aft fter t moved to New Milton where he purchased Glendalyn house on Fernhill Road at the junction with Barrs Avenue. Glendalyn had a large field at the back of the propert rty t which Mr Hasseldine allowed the rugby club to use free of charge from December 1931 through to his death in 1963. This became the first true ‘home’ for the club. There were no changing facilities at the ground. Home and away players had to either change in the Public Hall at the Recreation Ground or later at the Milton Hotel and then drive to the ground. Until 1938 the Club only played in the Christmas and Easter

university and school holidays, successfully attracting players from all over the New Forest area as can be seen from the December 1934 to January ryy 1935 results when the New Milton team played six matches winning five. Some New Milton players went on to play at county and international level including J.S.R. Reeves who played on the wing for England and the British Lions and Drummond St Clair Ford who was capped five times for Scotland. In November 1937 the club had problems in raising a team for the fort rthcoming t Christmas fixtures so merged temporarily with Bournemouth Sport rts t Club to become known as New Forest Wanderers but only four matches are recorded as played. In September 1938 a meeting took place in the New Milton Hotel where the club was reformed as New Milton and District Rugby Club to play for a full season with Mr Hasseldine as president and the home ground at Glendalyn. On 5th of September 1939 Ashley Secondary ryy School opened. This was the first purpose-built school in New Milton that had dedicated playing fields. Aft fter t World War Two it became the first school in the area to play rugby. The school produced some outstanding players who went on to play for New Milton. It is believed that six pre-war members of New Milton Rugby club lost their lives in World War two including Drummond St Clair Ford who was killed whilst commanding a submarine in the Mediterranean. Others included

Milton Hotel c 1920s used for team meetings and as a changing room.

Edward ‘Paddy’ Gunter who, along with his brother had played for the town in the 1930s. Paddy was killed whilst serv rving v as a fighter pilot during the Battle of Britain. The Club closed in 1942 and restart rted t in 1946. One of the challenges to be resolved was that of changing facilities. The club was able to hire a room at the British Legion Hall alongside the Recreation Ground. For £1 a match, the club were off ffered f the use of the smaller hall, the kitchen and a tiled washroom where port rtable t baths could be used. Three tin baths were acquired and these became the only postmatch washing facilities for the next fift fteen t years. Post war the club went from strength to strength. The 1949– 1950 season saw the team notch up twenty ty-five y wins, three defeats and three draws. This included defeating the Bournemouth 1st XV. XV V In 1963 Mr Hasseldine died and his house and grounds were sold. The Club needed to find a new home. They were allowed to use the hut off fff of old Milton road that was the HQ of the Boys Club.

This provided changing rooms, showers and a place for aft fter t match teas. The club was able to rent two rugby pitches at Ashley from Lymington Borough Council. In 1971 the old Ashley Pavilion was extended and renovated to become the clubs permanent home bringing together the pitch, changing facilities and bar all to one location for the first time! This is brief overv rview v of the history ryy of rugby in New Milton and is based on “A Rugby Club. The First Fift fty t Years Of New Milton Rugby 1924-1973” a book recently published and written by three former players Malcolm Mecklenburgh, Nick Mussert rtt and Philip Hutton. The book is available from Malcolm, 01425 614404, price £15.00 should you wish to read more. Bob Hutchings OBE Chairman Highcliffe Parish Council This month’s ‘Meet the Locals’ article features Bob Hutchings who lives in Highcliffe. His professional life in the civil service has taken him to different parts of the country. On retirement to Highcliffe he continued to work on behalf of the local community and is the current chairman of the Parish Council. Bob’s early years were spent in Stoney Lane, Christchurch. After his father came home from the war, Bob and his family moved to Burley village in 1947 where their grandfather ran the local post office. Bob had an idyllic childhood growing up with his two sisters and a brother in the heart of the New Forest. Bob would be out most days cycling, fishing and meeting friends. He had a great deal of freedom to travel around and explore the area.

Grammar School. This involved a taxi journey to and from the railway station at Holmsley. If he needed to stay on late at school that meant an eight mile walk home across the forest as the last train had already departed. After leaving grammar school Bob was signed for Bournemouth Football Club youth team. However, an injury incurred during a youth F.A. cup match put an end to a promising career on the pitch. Following his father’s advice, he went to London and studied accountancy. He joined the Civil Service and worked in the Audit Service, later the Audit Commission.

Bob’s work took him to various postings around the country. In Lincolnshire he met Judy, the lady who became his wife. They have been married almost sixty years. Bob is proud of his sons Steven and Bob attended Brockenhurst David and also of his grandchildren. Eddy is studying medicine at Cambridge and Chrissie has recently been on stage in London starring in the latest Harry Potter play. relaxing and getting to know the area. Bob still had commitments in Wales. As an auditor he had been appointed to assist in the running of a failing housing association. He successfully turned it around but was so impressed by the work that they did, he continued to volunteer to help run the organisation. Later he joined another association which provided homes for people with learning difficulties or drug problems and for single mothers who needed a secure refuge. Bob volunteered for the housing association for sixteen years. During that time he was instrumental in acquiring and managing over 3000 properties. On several occasions new properties or facilities were officially opened by HRH Princess Anne, who Bob got to know. In 2010 Bob was awarded an OBE for services to the voluntary

Long COVID Kate Garraway’s heart-breaking story of her husband Derek’s year long battle with Covid has been made even more complicated by the lack of legal protections she and Derek had in place. In her heart breaking documentary “Finding Derek” Kate explained how she was unable to access funds to manage her husband’s care or to refinance her mortgage. Kate did not even have the legal right to see his medical notes, owing to data protection. Research by Solicitors for the Elderly shows that 65% of the population think our next-ofkin will make medical and care decisions for us if we are no longer able to. In reality this is not the case unless a Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney is in place. Whilst there has been a rise in the number of enquiries made about Lasting Powers of Attorney during the pandemic only 22% of people in the UK actually have one. Kate’s situation shows how important it is that you have one in place. More people do have Lasting Powers of Attorney in relation to their Property and Financial Affairs in place or an old style Enduring Power of Attorney that does remain valid if created correctly prior to 1 October 2007 but Kate’s situation shows how important it is that everyone has one in place in order to ensure that you have done everything you can to make life as easy as possible for your loved ones.

Thai Red Prawn Curry

This is a super quick and very tasty meal of Thai red prawn curry. You will need 2 saucepans with lids and a sauté pan (deep frying pan) Put the rice on to boil - chop the Pak choy and place in the other pan with a little water salt and pepper to steam when you put the prawns in.

For 2 About 12 large raw prawns 1/2 a chopped onion 1 small clove of garlic chopped 1/2 inch of grated or sliced fresh ginger 2 large tomatoes deseed and chop each quarter in two 1 teaspoon red Thai paste 1/2 tin coconut cream 1 tablespoon of coconut oil 1/2 a lime juiced Serve with steamed rice and Pak choy.

44

Heat the oil in the sauté pan and add the onion, garlic and ginger, cook gently for 3 minutes and then turn up the heat a bit and add the prawns. Once you have done this turn on the pan containing the Pak choy. Allow the prawns to cook for 3 minutes and then add the tomatoes and Thai paste stirring gently to mix in. Cook a further 3 minutes and then add the coconut cream and the lime juice. Turn down to a simmer and cook for 4 more minutes. I like to serve the curry over the rice with the Pak choy on the side, it's a lovely creamy curry and if you want it a little more hot or less just adjust the amount of curry paste.

Holistic Health by Dr Damien T. O’Dwyer BSc, MChiro, PhD

Wholly Realistic Holistic li ti is i Wh lly R li tic I have been writing this column for a while now. I hope you are getting helpful tips and ideas about how to boost your body’s ability to achieve and maintain optimal health and wellbeing (sometimes known as bio-hacking). I have named this column “Holistic Health” and thought it might be useful to define Holism and outline the principles involved.

HOLISM IS A PROACTIVE APPROACH TO HEALTH AND WELLBEING. Naturalism:

No... you do not have to get your kit off! This is the principle that your body is part of the natural world. It follows that, just as you would not pollute the environment and expect the ecosystem to be unaffected, so it is with our bodies, minds and relationships. This principle also holds that health is our natural state and our bodies are designed to be self-healing and selfregulating. We should therefore listen to our bodies and not use artificial means to mask symptoms when they arise – as they are our body’s way of letting us know when something is wrong.

Holism & Whole-ism go hand in hand:

This is viewing the body as a whole and not in a mechanistic or reductionist way (i.e. we are greater than the sum of our parts!). Abundance, homeostatic balance and vitality are central to being healthy.

Interconnectivity:

Recognising that health is an interconnection between our physical, chemical and emotional states, and each affects the others. The simple, universal principle that “everything is connected to everything else” is the foundation of both Naturalism and Holism.

Pro-Active:

One of the major principles of holism is to develop habits that build better health through your lifestyle choices.

It follows that your responsibility to your body is to naturally provide it with what it requires to gain and maintain health. An ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of the cure.

Patience:

Our Facebook header contains this quote “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience”. In a world where we are conditioned to expect instant responses, we need to remember that our bodies need time to heal. Shakespeare knew it, “What wound did ever heal but by degrees?” Inherit in this is to recognise healing goes beyond what you are feeling, to recovery of function and activities of daily life.

Conservativism:

Health maintenance strategies include seeking help early when symptoms arise. Interventions, when required, should be timely, as natural, and conservative (i.e. as small), as possible. Vigilance is key to maintaining health. Waiting for symptoms to occur is reactive and waiting for them to worsen is counterproductive and destructive. Now, the above description may sound mystical or esoteric. Far from it. It is absolutely realistic; to the extent that in 1948, the World Health Organisation (WHO) made the following declaration: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” I totally agree!

As we are now in the merry month of May, we hope that we can all look forward to more time on our feet, whether this is Walking, Golfing, Dancing, playing Tennis or Rugby. What better way to prepare or reward your feet than with a Podiatry treatment. A sumptuous add-on to a Podiatry Appointment is our Prende Warm Wax Therapy Treatment which delivers a nourishing oil encased in warm wax to hydrate the skin - and it has the most divine aroma!

You may well be wondering what a Podiatrist does and just why feet are equally worthy of being looked after as well as we do our hair, eyes and teeth. Podiatrists are the medical professionals who specialise in the treatment of lower limb conditions. Our Podiatrists hold the BSc (Hons) Podiatry degree and are members of the College of Podiatry and registered with the Health & Care Professions Council. We are delighted to announce that we now offer the Swift Verrucae Treatment at New Milton Foot Clinic. For those stubborn Verrucae that can often be difficult to treat, a course of treatment with Swift has been found to be highly effective, with no requirement for local anaesthetic or dressings. This is great news as we are a very busy clinic, so we are looking forward to welcoming new customers to our clinic as well as all our regulars. Swift Testimonials from two of our patients:

Miss A (Barton on Sea) “Swift treatment was like magic - 8 years of verrucas, vanished!! Only took a few months to disappear. Lauren was absolutely brilliant, very helpful and “swift” with the treatment. Great service - thanks!!”

46

Mr L (New Milton) “Having suffered with verrucas for over 12 years I decided to try Swift. After just three sessions they have completely gone and I am no longer embarrassed by my feet! Jane was absolutely brilliant and I am truly over the moon with the outcome, thank you!’ Due to the current constraints on the NHS and their waiting times, we have been delighted to help out patients who have required Nail Surgery. We are always happy to work to schedule both assessment appointments and the procedures to fit in with our patients - usually within 1-2 weeks of initial enquiry. Diabetic Feet - We carry out Diabetic Foot Checks it is important that your feet are checked for any problems with circulation, sensation and anyone who has Diabetes should be aware of their individual risk status - this may be Low, Moderate/ Increased or High risk and complications from Diabetes can cause problems with the lower limbs/feet.

Car Parking - Our closest car parks are located in Elm Avenue (behind Bradbeers) and Crossmead Avenue. NEWSFLASH - We are recruiting for our Podiatry Team across both our clinics so we are looking for motivated, enthusiastic BSc (Hons) or DPodM qualified and HCPC registered Podiatrists. Full and / or Part-Time Hours available. For further information email our Operations Manager Christopherjgillingham@gmail.com

An envelope arrives with a chilling poisoned pen message, something that stirs old memories and dark secrets. In the English village of Melstead St Mary, the other women in Romilly’s extended family receive their own letters, each a cruel accusation that sparks suspicion and paranoia. There’s something decadent about immersing yourself in a 1960s setting and Erica James does a great job of creating a convincing backdrop for another family saga. A mix of mystery, romance and drama, perfect for lighter evenings. Published by Orion ISBN 1409173879

Travelling down from London to the exclusive Kingfisher Hill Estate by luxury coach, things take an unexpected turn when a young woman insists that if she stays in her seat, she will be murdered. This peculiar incident and the subsequent discovery of a body seem unconnected, but could they solve the mystery of Frank Davenport’s death? Can Poirot save Helen from the gallows and find the real culprit? It’s enough to get those ‘little grey cells working.’ It takes a brave author to take on the mantle of Agatha Christie, but Sophie Hannah manages to pull off the remarkable feat and once again we can enjoy the musings of the most famous Belgian detective. Published by Harper Collins ISBN 0008264554

‘What You Did’ by Claire McGowan Allie has the life she always wanted and decides to invite six good friends to an informal reunion, twenty years after they left Oxford. Their middle-class world is irrevocably shattered when Karen is attacked and points the finger at Mike, Ali’s husband. Who should Ali believe, because one of them is lying, her husband or her best friend? Another book about how long-term friendship goes wrong. McGowan has a great knack of capturing the right ‘feel’, after the haze of nostalgia and smug pride, the disbelief and shock are palpable. This is a great page-turner, and you know there will be some revelations before the end. This author has written many in the crime fiction genre and writes contemporary women’s fiction as ‘Eva Woods’. Published by Thomas and Mercer ISBN 1542091330

“I went from being in constant back & leg pain, feeling exhausted and run down to feeling 10 years younger, inches taller, the best health I'd felt in years and pain free after being treated by the team at BritChiro. What more can I say, they are an amazing team and really do care about not only making you pain free but improving your general health and well being. I wouldn't be without BritChiro in my life now. Give them a try you won't regret it.”

Neck and Shoulder Pain? Hip Pain?

“I was recommended BritChiro as I was becoming troubled by constant pain in my right shoulder and left hip. After a course of regular treatment over the last few months I am now pain free and less stiff in my lower back and have more movement in my neck. Hip and shoulder pain have dissipated. Highly recommended.”

Knee Pain?

“I had been suffering from severe hip and leg pain and was becoming less and less mobile. After only two weeks of treatment the pain has virtually gone and I am far more mobile and flexible. I would not hesitate to recommend BritChiro..”

UK Coastal Staycations & UK Rail breaks UK Cruise news: experience the excitement of a coastal cruise around the British Isles for a special birthday, Anniversary, or a family holiday. A cruise is a floating luxury hotel offering fine dining, entertainment, spa facilities, onboard shopping, swimming, gym, or simply relaxing (hopefully in the sun) on deck. This is relaxation at it’s best, a chance to being waited on and pampered after lockdown. Cruises around the UK start in May running through to October & all departing from Southampton. Cruise lines are implementing strict health & safety measures & many have a mandatory vaccination policy, proof of full vaccination 2 weeks prior to sailing and under 18 years require a negative PCR test. Exclusive to this summer is Disney Magic at Sea, new 2, 3 & 4-night staycation sailings into pure Disney storytelling. An amazing collection of onboard entertainment, dining & recreation for the entire family, waterslides, splash zones &

16

themed restaurants make it so magical for the children. Sailings from Southampton & Tilbury, on selected dates. Major cruise line options are as follows: P & O flagship Britannia & new ship Iona offer short breaks to weeklong cruises, some of which allow you to disembark on an excursion only, but many are just coastal sailings. Cunard onboard Queen Elizabeth start July - October with short breaks to 12-night cruise itineraries. Princess Cruises onboard Regal Princess & the new Sky Princess do offer drinks, tips & Wi-Fi packages. Royal Caribbean start from July on Anthem of the Seas offering 4 – 8-night itineraries. Celebrity Silhouette offers all inclusive which includes drinks, tips & Wi -Fi packages. Fred Olsen starts in July & includes maiden voyages on Bolette & Borealis. Saga includes Spirit of Adventure’s maiden voyage too. MSC Cruises onboard Virtuosa does not have a

mandatory vaccination so they require a negative test 72 hours prior to boarding and a lateral flow test on embarkation. This ship is family friendly and all-inclusive. UK Rail Breaks – Enjoy quality independent rail breaks across England, Scotland & Wales or enjoy the British Pullman Belmond train celebrate a special day trip, departing London Victoria 21st August in 1920s vintage carriages, includes 3 course brunch & dinner, free time in Broadstairs, Champagne reception back on board, wine, tea & coffee, a day to remember. Ber tie’s Grand Opening Monday 12 April was a very big day for Bertie. Unlike his owners, he was not booked in for a haircut or a manicure, neither had he plans to go to the pub or shopping. Bertie was doing his first ever Official Opening. The day dawned slightly overcast and damp but by 10am the sun was shining. Bertie was looking particularly good, not having been given the chance to get muddy! A brush before leaving the house and ensured that no bits of the garden were taken along. The Grand Opening Event was to celebrate the latest branch of

34

Clearwaypools who have opened their new premises on Old Milton Road. This is their third branch offering hot tubs, pools and all things related.

On arrival, the last finishing touches were taking place with the pavement being cleaned in readiness. The owner, Nathan came out to meet Bertie who gave him his very best attention, then Bertie was taken inside to inspect the hot tubs - the one he particularly liked even had steps up to it.

The visit took about 15 minutes, all under the watchful eye of Great Uncle Bugle who sat in the car. Bugle has opened several shops and events in his lifetime, and although he no longer does ‘Public Appearances, he felt it was important to make sure that the ’Young Pup’ carried out his duty in the approved manner.

Local History

Highcliffe Castle - The Tenants

It’s all very well owning a big country pile, but that privilege comes with hefty bills. If you happen to be ‘asset rich but income poor’ then how you pay for upkeep becomes a real and present concern. When Edward Montagu Stuart Wortley (1857-1934) inherited Highcliffe Castle in 1891 it was a bit of a poisoned chalice. An Army officer who served in Afghanistan, Egypt, the Sudan, the 2nd Boer War and WW1, Stuart Wortley got around the problem by selling land for housing (hence Montagu, Stuart, Wortley and Wharncliffe Roads). He also rented the place to wealthy bods whilst he was on his military postings, his overseas hols, or just slumming it at a smaller abode on the estate, which later morphed into the Hinton Oak pub (‘The Oaks’ today).

of Port rtland t (1857-1943) was here in 1900 with his fresh bride, who was formerly Winifred Dallas-Yorke (1863-1954). They’d married the year before. I do find that a double-barrelled nomenclature enables you to get on in life, don’t you know. Bill was variously a landowner, latter-day court rtier, t Tory ryy MP and ‘Master of the Horse’, whilst Win was a humanitarian and early animal rights campaigner. ‘Bert rtie’, t the Prince of Wales (and future Edward VII), was a buddy of the Bentincks, so joined them at Highcliff ffe, f with his mistress Alice Keppel tagg gging g along with her husband. The mind bogg ggles. g If you’re unsure of our royal lineages, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, is actually Alice’s great-granddaughter. Bert rtie, t who acceded to the throne in January ryy 1901, would return as King when the Bentincks rocked up again in 1904 and 1906, that high Edwardian period when the sun shone incessantly, and every ryt ything t was fab if you were wealthy and double-barrelled. War was coming though.

Winifred, the Duchess of Portland (John Singer Sargent).

Another tenant at the castle was the more abbreviated Sir John Aird, 1st Baronet (1833-1911) who was a renowned engineering contractor, taking up residence on two occasions in the early1900s. He was another Tory ryy MP, the first mayor of Paddington (1900) and an avid art rtt collector, who was responsible for shift fting t Joseph Paxton’s ‘Cry rystal y Palace’ from Hyde Park to Sydenham in 1854, as well as building the Aswan Dam across the Nile (1899-1902). Apparently, he liked to throw lively part rties t at the castle for his guests who also enjoyed cycling and shooting (as you do).

Violet Stuart Wortley and her children, c.1900. Violet married Edward Montagu Stuart Wortley in February 1891 the same year that her husband inherited Highcliffe Castle, which he let to the rich and famous (author unknown).

The recently wed William Cavendish-Bentinck, 6th Duke

William Cavendish-Bentinck, 6th Duke of Portland, c.1900 (Elliott & Fry).

Sir John Aird, dam builder and shifter of the Crystal Palace (The Illustrated London News).

Then we had Sir Harold Harmswort rth t (1868-1940) who became 1st Viscount Rothermere. He adopted the castle as his country ryy home between 1910 and 1912, which meant he was here for the Bournemouth Centenary ryy Airshow (July 1910) when aviator Claude Grahame-White, who was born in Bursledon (Hants), stayed as a guest. Grahame-White was the first of the pioneering aviators to complete a night flight, also in 1910, and part rticipated t in the airshow, which famously claimed the life of Charles Rolls, the co-founder of Rolls-Royce. Rothermere, of course, was a leading newspaper proprietor. Rolls inadvert rtently t made the front pages.

which, of course, did bend the truth a bit here and there. Take the Oxford Street unveiling of ‘The Queen of Time’ in 1931, that immense statue and horological masterpiece (clock) where Harry ryy takes a tumble at said unveiling and ends up convalescing at Highcliff ffe f Castle. He would have found that tricky as he was the tenant at the castle between 1916 and 1922. He also didn’t have a fall at the unveiling (minor point).

rent the place and spent a furt rther t £25,000 on ‘improvements’, which seems an odd thing for a tenant to do. He planned to build a heft fty t castle on Hengistbury ryy Head (one he could call his own), but that proved to be a castle in the air. He’s buried in the churchyard of St Mark’s as you all know, along with other members of his family. Meanwhile, please remember if you’re watching a fact-based drama, it’s still a drama.

Harry Selfridge, US retail guru, the tenant at Highcliffe Castle between 1916 and 1922. Here he’s pictured c.1910 (author unknown).

The famous oriel window at Highcliffe Castle, which has looked down on some famous tenants in the past (Steve Roberts).

Take care & stay safe folks. Steve Roberts Steve Robert rts’ t first book, ‘Lesser Known Christchurch’, was published in August 2015, by Dorset book specialist Roving Press. His second book, ‘Lesser Known Bournemouth’, was published in November 2019.

Harold Harmsworth who rented the castle between 1910 and 1912 (Gabell).

And then, of course, there was Harry ryy Gordon Selfridge (1858-1947), the US retail entrepreneur, founder of his eponymous ‘Selfridges’ in Oxford Street (1909) and subject of my popular ‘Mr Selfridge Fact & Fiction’ talk, the fiction bit being a sly reference to the TV V series,

Rose Selfridge, wife of Harry Selfridge, who died in the influenza pandemic in 1918 and is buried in the churchyard of St Mark’s (author unknown).

We know for cert rtain t he was paying £5,000 per annum to

Nature on your Doorstep ‘Calling the Violet’ by Lucy Larcom Dear Little Violet, Don’t be afraid! Lift your blue eyes From the rocks mossy shade! All the birds call for you Out of the sky; May is here waiting, And here, too, am I.

May is such a beautiful month to be outdoors, there is so much to see and appreciate in nature. The birds are busy breeding, wildflowers are reaching out from the undergrowth and it’s easier to spot all signs of activity in nature. The nightingale (right) s renowned for its beautiful song, melodious notes that you would not expect from such a plain looking bird. Early May is the best time to try and spot one as the males return from their winter in Africa, to defend their territory and attract females. Their determination can make them sing in full view, so now is the time to follow the song and see one if you can. Other birds to watch out for are swifts (below), swallows and house martins. Swifts can be spotted in towns as much

as in the New Forest, circling and screaming as they chase one another. Swifts are dark, house martins have white bellies and swallows are dark blue with a red throat patch. You can take part in the monitoring process by logging any swift sighting through this link. Swift Mapper | The RSPB The official ‘Dawn Chorus Day’ always takes part on the first Sunday in May, not just in Britain but all over the world. By this time of year, the dawn chorus is in full flow from the early hours so take a moment to relish the sound of birdsong if you can. There is little to distract in terms of noise pollution and traffic and the still air tends to carry the song further during the warmer months. Small mammals, badgers and foxes are now raising their young

56

and may venture out with their cubs as they get bigger.

This is also the perfect time to visit a wildflower meadow. The past few years have seen many groups actively encouraged ‘rewilding’ and many meadows have been left to flower naturally and redress the balance of nature for our native insects. Early flowers include meadow buttercups, clover and small purple orchids along with quaking grass and meadow foxtail. If you haven’t visited a bluebell wood yet, now is the time!
