Buried in the cemetery at St Mary Magdalene church, New Milton is a First World War soldier who was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was Lt Colonel George Campbell Wheeler. George Wheeler was born in 1880 in Japan. His father was Dr Edwin Wheeler, who aft fter t serv rving v in Royal Navy vyy as a surgeon, took up private medical practice in Japan. George Wheeler was sent to England for

The Shumran bend was an area of the river swollen by flood water. It was about 350 yards wide. On 23rd of February ryy The Ghurkhas were rowed across the river in boats. The rowers were men of the 7th Battalion the Hampshire Regiment. This Territorial Army Battalion was raised in the New Forest and Christchurch area of Hampshire. The opposite bank for the river was heavily defended by Turkish troops who were well dug in behind embankments.

In February ryy 1917, Major Wheeler and the men of the 2/9th Ghurkhas were tasked with crossing the river Tigris at Shumran bend and clearing the Turkish forces from the opposite bank. This action was import rtant t as the British Army were advancing on Baghdad and using the river Tigris to bring up supplies and reinforcements and take the wounded downstream to hospitals and safety. In 1915, a short rtt distance down river, a part rtt of the British Army had become besieged at the town of Kut. The action in February ryy 1917 was part rtt of a campaign to recapture Kut.

Major Wheeler at once led a charge with another offi fficer fi and three men, receiving a severe bayonet wound in the head, but managed in spite of this, to disperse the enemy. This bold action on his part rtt undoubtedly saved the situation. In spite of his wound, he continued to consolidate his position.” For this action Major George Wheeler was awarded the Victoria Cross. The medal was presented to him in 1919 by King George V. He saw active serv rvice v on the Nort rtht West Frontier as the commanding offi fficer fi of 9th Ghurkha Rifles and was awarded campaign medals for serv rvice v

in Waziristan. His final posting was as commandant of the Military ryy Police at Port rtt Blair in India. On retirement in 1925 he settled in Bart rton-On-Sea t living at ‘Mary ryv yville’ v Beach Avenue. The Times of 28th October 1912 announced that in November the marriage would take place of Captain George Campbell Wheeler and Miss Beatrice Ethel Knyv yvett. v They went on to have three sons. Sadly, Beatrice’s health was not strong and she was at some time admitted to the Holloway Sanatorium in Virginia Water where she passed away in 1940. George Wheeler took an active part rtt in local aff ffairs. f He was a member of the Conserv rvative v Club and a keen support rter t of the ‘New Forest Players’. It is known that he had a fine baritone voice and took part rtt in operatic perf rformances f in India. He was a staunch support rter t of the New Milton Branch of the Royal British Legion attending the various meetings and the annual Serv rvice v of Remembrance along with other parades. The local British Legion minute books note that he was invited to become the President but declined. He is
recorded as volunteering to help the branch with welfare matters, in part rticular t driving around the parish dropping off fff Christmas presents to the children of Legion members and ensuring that no child went without. Colonel Wheeler was described as being a warm heart rted, t generous man with a keen sense of humour. He was also a gift fted t linguist speaking French, German, Japanese and Hindustani. In his youth he had been a great sport rtsman. t He had played rugby for Surry ryy County and cricket, tennis and polo when he was stationed in India. George Wheeler died on 26th of August 1938 at the Grove Nursing Home in Bart rton t on Sea following an operation. He was buried at St Mary ryy Magdalene churchyard and the New Milton Advert rtiser t of 3rd of September 1938 report rted t that ‘disappointment was expressed’ that Colonel Wheeler was not given a military ryy funeral. There was not even a bugler to sound the last post, or an army chaplain to recite the committal serv rvice. v The only token was that his coffi ffin fi was covered with the Union Jack. His obituary ryy records that members of New Milton
Branch of the Royal British Legion were present at the funeral. By the 1990s his grave had fallen into a sad state of repair with the stone cross broken. In September 1999 a new headstone for George Wheeler was unveiled in a serv rvice v of remembrance. The stone was paid for by members of Bedford school and the Ghurkha Rifles association replaced the stone. Sadly, Colonel Wheeler’s grave was once again neglected until 2008 when New Milton Town Council agreed to take on the responsibility for keeping the grave weeded and in good order. In the words of former Councillor Goff fff Beck “We owe it to him and should be proud to have such a brave man living here”.

Jacquie Carver This month we meet Jacquie Carver who had a long and successful career in the Metropolitan Police whilst at the same time raising a family. Born in London on 24th November 1965, Jacquie is the eldest of five girls. Aged 10 her family moved from London to St Albans, Hertfordshire where she attended St. Alban’s Girls school. In September 1982 she joined the Metropolitan Police Cadets and during her 2 years at Hendon cadet college passed A’ levels in English and Sociology., alongside her police studies. She took part in all of the sports available, including becoming a member of the Police Life Saving Team, successfully competing throughout her service. Many of Jacquie’s closest friends date from these early training days.
Jacquie loves horses and in 1986, after 2 years as a probationary constable, she applied to become a mounted police officer. She was successful on her first application which was quite an achievement for a female officer at that time. She completed the twenty week course at Imber Court Mounted Branch training centre, during which she was lucky enough to meet Princess Diana, presenting her with a bouquet during the Royal visit. She served 11 years in the Mounted Branch firstly at Rochester Row Police stables, then Great Scotland Yard Stables, both in central London. Her mounted duties included numerous ceremonial events, football matches and public order events, such as the Poll Tax demonstration in March 1990. In 1991 Jacquie had her first daughter, Zoe, and continued
to work full time. Following the birth of Natasha, in 1994, she became one of the first officers to take up the opportunity to work part time, and had her third daughter, Holly in 1995. A great active role model, Jacquie trained at TISKA Karate Club, St Albans with her three girls, who all have black belts, and she achieved Black belt 2nd Dan. Jacquie met her husband, Mike, also a Met. police officer, in 1992 and they became grandparents to Nancy in 2019. In 1999, as a result of a new police tenure policy, whereby officers with more than 10 years in specialist departments had to return to foot duty, Jacquie was posted to Harrow police station. During her time there she passed her advanced driving course and became a Family Liaison Officer. This role is more investigative than we

Jacquie had joined the Women’s Institute in 2014 and upon moving to Hampshire found that both the local WI’s were full, with long waiting lists. A suggestion was made that she start a new WI, and with support from friends, she formed Barton Bees WI in July 2017. She is the current president and also a member of the Board of Trustees for Hants Fed. Of Womens Institutes. Since lockdown in March 2020, their meetings have all taken place online, but they have embraced the challenge and certainly feel that the difficulties have advanced the whole WI technologically. She belongs to 2 local choirs and is learning to sew, although she’s hopeless at knitting. She loves skiing, swimming, tennis, her new rowing machine, going to the gym and is a reluctant runner!

C HANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT IN LIFE CHANGE This week I was challenged to explain my principles of practice, to sum up in a few words what guides my clinical philosophy.
PRINCIPLE: THERE IS NEVER “NOTHING YOU CAN DO” TO CHANGE YOUR HEALTH FOR THE BETTER.
My big frustration in practice is when people have been told that the ‘diagnosis’ they have been given means “nothing can be done to help”. What it really means is, the person saying it (often calling themselves “an expert”) does not have the magic bullet to cure the condition. I hear this almost every day. Especially in relation to osteoarthritic joints. It is demonstrably false, illogical, and lifelimiting. If it were true, I would not have a practice. A good 70-90% of the people we see in our clinic will have osteoarthritis somewhere in their body. What is more annoying for me, as a scientist, is that this opinion is really illogical. We know the causes of osteoarthritis. Almost always it is a lack of movement. The effect is reduced joint space, displacement of the protective synovial fluid and eventual wearing of the joint surface cartilage. Inflammation, joint degeneration, and eventual joint surface destruction often results. Logic dictates anything that can open up the joint space, restore synovial fluid to the joint surfaces and reduce inflammation will help. Also, consistent re-introduction of optimal movement patterns should improve the situation over time. This is specifically and intentionally what Chiropractic Adjustments provide at the individual joint level. YOUR CHOICE? Either... Over time this is likely to slow the progression of degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis), possibly halting it, and even reversing the pathological processes, if intervention is early and often enough. So, do we cure osteoarthritis? No! In fact, we do not lay claims to “curing” any “diagnosis”. Working within the holistic paradigm is not to diagnose, treat and cure; but to assess, retrain and optimise. Working with people and processes as a whole, requires logic and adaptability. It is a move away from blanket prescriptions, toward specific care, tailored to the capabilities and goals set by the individual we provide care for. Herein lies the recognition that nothing in nature ever stays the same. Change is everconstant. To say “that won’t change” is wrong. Conditions change due to time-dependant and evolutionary processes. Healing is natural too! What is impossible, is for your condition and your health to stay the same. Nature on your Doorstep “The Summer looks out from her brazen tower, Through the flashing bars of July.” By Francis Thompson This is the time to enjoy the warmer summer evenings. Those of you who planted stocks, nicotiana and evening primrose will be enjoying night -scented gardens. These unusual flowers appeal to insects which can attract swooping bats at the end of warm day. There are 18 species of bats in the UK, we have over two and a half million of them. The two types of pipistrelle (below right) are the most common and account for over 75% of the population, so other species of bats are quite rare. Contrary to popular belief, they aren’t blind and see quite well in the half light of a summer’s night. They use echolocation, high pitched sounds that bounce off objects, to create a landscape of the space around them. One of the most interesting moths to discover in the garden is the Garden Tiger Moth (below). It’s numbers have declined in recent years,
but they are widespread in the UK. As caterpillars, they are stout and hairy, brown and black in colour, known as a ‘woolly bear’. Their hairy exterior protects them from predators like birds. As a moth, the forewings are chocolate brown with cream patterns and the hindwings are an orange red with black spots. Froghoppers are small, brown insects that jump huge distances when they are under threat. You’ll recognise the larvae, on plant stems, coated in a froth of cuckoo spit to protect from predators as it feeds on fresh new shoots and leaves. They are roughly 6mm long and hide in hedgerows and flower borders. Summer is a great time to try and spot owls. If you hear the well-known ‘twit-twoo’ at night, then you may be able to catch sight of a tawny owl (above).

Other owls make different noises, screeches and calls. This is the time that chicks rely on parents for food whilst they are learning to hunt for themselves, this means that the adults are away from the nest, hunting for longer periods and are easier to see.

Owning Your Home Jointly
There are 2 ways in which you may own the home in which you live jointly with another. Firstly, you may own the home jointly as joint tenants. Secondly, you may own the home jointly as tenants in common. The word “tenants” is not connected to a landlord and tenant relationship nor with the payment of rent. Jointly as joint tenants means that you both own the whole property. On the death of one joint tenant the survivor will keep the whole property. For example, Jack and Jill own 1 Windmill Cottage jointly as joint tenants. Jill dies. Jack inherits the whole property automatically because he and Jill own as joint tenants. Owning a property jointly as tenants in common means that each of you owns a share in the property. The shares may be owned in percentages. So Jack and Jill may own 1 Windmill Cottage as tenants in common owning 50% each or 1% for Jack and 99% for Jill or any percentages in between. If Jack and Jill own 1 Windmill Cottage jointly as tenants in common and Jack dies then Jack’s share in the property does not automatically pass to Jill. Jack’s share in the property forms part of his estate and it will pass by virtue of his will if he has one, or, if he does not have one, it will pass on intestacy to the beneficiaries detailed in the Administration of Estates Act 1925 as amended. If Jack and Jill are unmarried then when Jack dies his share in the property will not pass to

Jill unless he has made a will naming Jill as his beneficiary because the Administration of Estates Act 1925 does not recognise unmarried couples no matter how long they have lived together. When buying a property jointly with another always consider carefully if you need to own it as joint tenants or tenants in common. If you have invested more in the purchase of the property than the other joint owner then always consider owning the property jointly as tenants in common to protect your additional investment. If you do not and your relationship breaks down then it may be assumed that you have made a gift of the additional contribution. So, Jack and Jill buy a property for £300,000. Jack paid the deposit of £100,000. Jack and Jill bought the property as joint tenants. Jack and Jill separate and it is assumed that Jack made a gift to Jill of the deposit. The property is sold and the proceeds of sale are divided equally between them. If Jack and Jill had purchased the property jointly as tenants in common then Jack’s investment of £100,000 could have been protected. When buying a property jointly with another always consider whether you should own the property jointly as joint tenants or jointly as tenants in common and discuss this with your legal adviser. Always review your wills or make wills because of your change in circumstances when buying a new property.

Chicken Enchiladas
This is a recipe that always seems to wow; it is lovely, only mildly spicy, but is also very easy to make. You will need either a large deep frying pan, or as I prefer, a wok and a deep oven proof dish. It is also a good way to use up left over chicken. This will serve about 4 people.
1 medium cooked chicken, or half a large one 8 mushrooms 1 medium onion 2 cloves of garlic 1 bunch of coriander 1/2 a pint of double cream 1 jar of enchilada sauce (easily found in supermarkets) 3oz grated cheddar 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pack of corn tortillas

Slice thinly the onion and thickly the mushrooms and cook in the wok for a few minutes in the oil adding the chopped garlic. As it softens, season with salt and pepper and after a couple of minutes add the spices from the top of the jar of sauce and cook for a further 2 minutes. Then add the sauce from the jar and the double cream. While this is coming to the boil tear up the chicken into medium to large pieces and drop into the sauce and simmer for a further 2 minutes. Chop up the coriander and add to the wok, stir gently and take off the heat. If you have a round dish this becomes much easier but as the tortillas are easy to tear it doesn't really matter. Put enough sauce and chicken to cover the bottom of the dish and then place a layer of the corn tortillas. Continue to layer up like a lasagne to the top layer, keeping enough sauce back pour over the top layer. Add the grated cheese and put into a hot oven for half an hour or until the top is golden brown. I serve this with basmati rice and whole green beans or broccoli, I hope that it becomes a firm favourite in your house as much as it is in mine...............

Local History
The Hurn Branch
Having given you a couple of columns on Highcliffe Castle recently (Visitors and Tenants), I thought I’d do the same with the local railways, for as previously mentioned, I do love my railways. So, I took you on a journey along the BrockenhurstChristchurch line last month: This time we’re heading further back in time. It’s time to shine my literary torch on the Hurn Branch, a.k.a. The Ringwood, Christchurch and Bournemouth Railway, which was the first to reach the centre of the Priory town (and, when it was extended, Bournemouth). The junction for this line was Ringwood, which had opened with the Southampton and Dorchester Railway in 1847 and continued in use for 120 years until this line, the so-called ‘Castleman’s Corkscrew’, was closed in its entirety, thanks to railway bogeyman Dr. Beeching, in 1967.
Not much remains in Ringwood to sugg ggest g there was ever a railway here, with the station site occupied by light industrial units. I have read, however, that a 2009 report rtt of the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) did recommend the reinstatement of the Brockenhurst-Ringwood line, so you never know, there may be a postscript to come. The Ringwood-Christchurch line opened in November 1862, with two intermediate stops. The first was Avon Lodge, a private and untimetabled halt, and the second was Hurn station. Both were connected to Lord Malmesbury ryy (James Harris, the 3rd Earl, 1807-89) as the line crossed several miles of his land. In return for selling land to the railway company, Harris insisted these two stations be provided, Hurn for his personal use (he lived at Heron Court rt, t or Hurn Court rt), t with Avon Lodge for his tenants and staff fff at Avon Cottage (or Avon Castle as it became).

The case went to court rtt where the TurnerTurners lost (January ryy 1874), the judge ruling that whilst they could stop ‘ordinary ry’ y serv rvices, v this didn’t apply to a through serv rvice v from Waterloo to Bournemouth.

Hurn was more substantial, although it too, like Avon Lodge, was private and untimetabled to begin with, quickly becoming a public station. Opening with the line as ‘Herne’ in November 1862, the station soon appeared on timetables (January ryy 1863) and by July 1897 had become the familiar ‘Hurn’. A passing loop was eventually provided so trains could cross here.

The writing was on the wall though for Hurn and the line, especially aft fter t the Brockenhurst-Christchurch line opened in 1888. Closure of the Hurn line was first mooted in the 1920s with ticket sales at Hurn averaging just over 20 a day at the start rtt of that decade, but plummeting, until they were just a third of that by the end of the 20s. The signal box at Hurn closed in 1927 as Beeching’s predecessors circled.
The line finally reached Christchurch station which lay the other side of Bargates from today’s 1880s creation. When the line was extended to Bournemouth in 1870, a levelcrossing was provided to get the line across Bargates. The arrival of the later line through Sway and New Milton would see today’s station open (1888) with the Bargates bridge now in place to take the road over the railway. The 1862 station now looked a bit marooned in between the Ringwood and Sway lines.

Dudmoor Lane is the best stretch of the old trackbed for walkers and cyclists. There’s no trace of the first Christchurch station. Take care & stay safe folks.

What’s left ft? t Well, Avon Lodge is a private residence and Hurn station is the popular Avon Causeway Inn, railway-themed, and with a Pullman carriage used for Murder Mysteries, which I’ve always thought would be more entert rtaining t with a genuine murder.
Today’s Christchurch station began life as a junction as the Ringwood line was still operational, but this only lasted until 1935, when the backwater line was closed to passengers. It remained open for freight for a few more years. I believe the final passenger train was 28th September 1935.
