Local History

Judge Peterson and his Tower.

Andrew Thomas Turton Peterson has left an enduring legacy in our area in the form of the building that is known today as Sway Tower. In the immediate aftermath of its construction, it was known either as Peterson’s Tower or Arnewood Tower as it was built in the manor of Arnewood. So, who was Andrew Peterson and why did he build the structure some have called ‘Peterson’s Folly’? Andrew Peterson was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1813. His family were very ryy well off ff. f His father died when Andrew was young and he was cared for and educated by both his grandfather, Sir Thomas Turt rton, t and his great uncle the Reverend John Michele. At the age of thirt rteen, t Peterson was sent off fff to boarding school. He was ext xtremely t unhappy in this environment and so he ran away to sea. Ill health eventually forced his return home.

With his grandfather’s assistance, Peterson was able to gain admission to Cambridge University tyy in 1836 where he studied law. He was called to the Bar in 1843 and became a barrister. Peterson married Charlott tte t Myers in 1838 and they lived in Dulwich. They went on to have a daughter Anna, who was born in 1841. Five years later the family moved to India where Peterson became established as a barrister in the High Court rtt of Calcutt tta. t Peterson made his fort rtune t practicing law in India. He was however, a man with a strong sense of justice and oft ften t fought to support rtt the underdog. Peterson went on to become an acting judge in the High Court rtt of Calcutt tta. t At the age of fift fty ty-five, y Peterson decided to retire from the Indian legal profession and move back to England. He had amassed a fort rtune t and would be financially secure for the rest of his life. In about 1868 he bought Drumduan Estate situated in Barrows Lane

in Hordle Parish. It consisted of a small house and 123 acres. Here, he set about enjoying his two passions, farming and building. Whilst in India Peterson had made a study of architecture and building. He also became interested in the use of concrete as a material. Peterson start rted t to build a large home almost entirely out of concrete. He also built farm buildings and outhouses, even revett tting t the ditches using the same material. It was here that Peterson constructed his first tower. He went on to rename his propert rty ty Arnewood Towers. In 1872 Peterson met Mrs Mary ryy Ann Girling the leader of the Shakers religious sect. They were for many years resident in Vagg ggs g Lane. It was through Mrs Girling that Peterson became interested in spiritualism. He eventually met a medium called William Lawrence, who had just been released from prison aft fter t serv rving v three months for fraud. Peterson believed that, through

Lawrence, he had been contacted by the architect Sir Christopher Wren who urged him to build a tall tower. Peterson decided the tower would be a proty type y for others and also become a mausoleum for himself and his wife.

He consulted renowned London based civil engineer Rollo Massy who had been born and brought up in Barrows Lane. Massey calculated that the building was strong enough to withstand wind pressure of 55lb per square foot.

At this time during the 1870s there was an agricultural depression with many labourers in the area unemployed. Peterson employed these men to do the building work for him. He paid above the average wage and took care to ensure that he took on those who were unemployed in the local area. Building work commenced in 1879.

Peterson wrote out detailed instructions and a timetable for each days work. He kept these in an ‘Order Book’ detailing his thoughts and ideas on how the building should be constructed. Peterson recorded in May 1883 “I am afraid that this book if read at all is chucked aside and nothing thought of it”.

The building was designed by Peterson and was constructed of concrete that was poured into three wooden formers or frames which were bolted together. The concrete was rammed and allowed to set before the lower frame was removed and raised up on top of the other two formers for the next xtt pouring. Windows, cornices and specialist blocks for pillars and steps were cast in wooden moulds and allowed to harden. They were then lift fted t into place. As the tower grew in height a wooden derrick was placed at the top. Iron rods were insert rted t at the places where the floors were to be cast. A rope and pulley system, powered by a horse was used to hoist concrete and other building materials up. Peterson was concerned that the tower would not be strong enough to stand up to high winds.

Despite problems with the supply of gravel by 1885 the tower was completed. It is 218 feet in height and is the tallest non-reinforced concrete structure in the world. The spiral staircase, with 330 steps links thirt rteen t storeys.

The view from the top looking down onto Arnewood Towers

The tower was topped off fff with a cupola room which Peterson wanted to house a light. This was forbidden by the Admiralty tyy as it might be a hazard to shipping. The tower cost £30,000 to build, which is wort rth t about £4 million today. Andrew Peterson died in 1906 and his ashes were placed in an urn in a vault beneath the tower before being later interred

Peterson family memorial in St Lukes Church Sway

in the family grave in Sway Churchyard. The tower remained in the Peterson family possession until 1957. It was sold. In the great storm of 1987, it suff ffered f some damage and needed repair and strengthening. In 1991 it was opened up as a bed and breakf kfast f and restaurant business. The business closed by 1995. The tower is a grade two listed building. Andrew Peterson, a true English eccentric, has left ftt his mark on the local landscape with the concrete house and farm buildings but the great tower will ensure his name lives on. Nick Saunders Nick Saunders is a local historian who would be pleased to hear from any reader who has information relating to local history ry. y In addition he would be interested to see any postcards or photographs of our district. Edward Horne BEM This month, the subject of ‘Meet the Locals’ is Edward ‘Ted’ Horne BEM who has had a fascinating career as a policeman in Palestine and in the Metropolitan Force. On retiring to New Milton, he became involved in running many local groups for the benefit of the community. He celebrates his 100th birthday on 26th of June this year. Ted was born in 1921 and spent much of his childhood in Eastbourne. He attended the City of London School, which overlooked the Thames. Here he was a member of the Officer Training Corps, which gave him his first taste of military life. As a young man Ted had a great interest in the Middle East and read the most informative books and

literature on the region. In 1938 with war clouds looming Ted joined the Territorial Army, serving in the 7th City of London Regiment. When his parents moved to Brighton in 1939, he transferred to a Sussex Royal Artillery Battery which was serving in an anti-aircraft role. His unit saw action during the Battle of Britain helping to defend the coastline from hostile air attack. In 1941 Ted volunteered to join the Palestine Police. He did this partly because of his great interest in the Middle East but also with a view to a future, post war career. Of the one hundred candidates who applied Ted was one of the ten selected. He and his colleagues went out to Palestine via a convoy through U Boat infested waters. Two ships in the convoy were lost. He arrived at the police training school at Mount Scopus in January 1942. His training included legislation, weapons handling, language skills and first aid. On completion in May 1942, he was posted to Haifa District. Ted served in most of the countries in the region. He transferred to the C.I.D. and worked in plain clothes in an intelligence gathering role, often spending weeks in the desert with Bedouin Arabs identifying arms smuggling routes and assessing the tribes who supported the

Germany and Vichy French forces. By 1944 Ted was increasingly involved in trying to prevent Jewish terrorism as the Zionist movement gained strength and fought to obtain a separate country. After the end of the Second World War Ted was recalled to the British Army in 1946 and then demobbed. By now his parents had moved to

Bournemouth. Ted was able to find work as an office manager at a coach company. It was here that he met June who was working as a nurse. They were married in 1950 at St Peters Church in the town. Ted missed the comradeship and life of a police officer. After some discussion with June, he applied to join the Metropolitan Police in London. In 1952 he attended the police training centre at Hendon. After completion of his basic training, he served two years as a probationary constable, in uniform at Tottenham Court Road Police Station. He was on duty at the Coronation on 2nd of June 1953. After his probationary period was over, Ted went on to CID as a detective. After he was fully trained, he was posted to several stations as a divisional detective. He then served on the fraud squad based at New Scotland Yard. Ted was part of a team that investigated extremely complex company frauds. His work took him all over the country in the quest of evidence to help bring the cases to court. In the late 1960s, by now a Detective Sergeant, Ted moved

into the world of forensic science. He ran the forensics school at Hendon, training scenes of crime officers for the Metropolitan Police, Constabularies in England and Wales and foreign students from around the world. Ted was an expert lecturer in forensic science. He was highly skill and very respected. When Ted retired from the Metropolitan Police in 1979, he was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to Police Forensics. He and June moved to Barton on Sea in 1980 and immediately became involved in local organisations. They trained to become interviewers for the Citizens Advice Bureau. After five years of giving help, advice and guidance to the people of New Milton, Ted became the manager. He was involved in several tribunal cases where his previous experience in the Police was a great asset. He continued to serve in the Bureau until 1990. Ted also became the chairman of the local RNLI branch. He and his colleagues were involved in local fundraising events for the lifeboat service. He proudly recalls that his team managed to raise £3000 in two hours at Barton on Sea one year.

Ted and June 2005 at the last Palestine Police Old Comrades parade use or cannot afford public transport. The service typically handles 6000 requests a year for help. Ted was elected as the president of the local branch and eventually stood down in 2019. In 2002 Ted published a definitive history of the Palestine Police entitled A Job Well Done. He received a letter of thanks from Her Majesty the Queen for the book. In addition, Ted was for many years the President of the Palestine Police Old Comrades Association and editor of their magazine. In 2009 Ted was named the Citizen of the Year by New Milton Town Council. There is a bench in Mallard Court, Station Road with a plaque to commemorate this.

After joining the local branch of the Royal British Legion Ted eventually became the branch president. He was for many years involved in running the This year is Ted’s 100th November 11th commemoration birthday. Vulnerable People I have mentioned before the vulnerability of some people that we deal with on a day to day basis. I read with horror the story of Daphne Franks in a newspaper last month. She is lobbying Parliament to prevent predatory marriages. Daphne’s mother Joan died in March 2016. 3 days after Joan’s death Daphne and the rest of her family discovered that Joan had secretly married in October 2015 a man 23 years her junior. At the time of Joan’s marriage she was 91 years of age and she was suffering from severe vascular dementia. Daphne said when she found out about the marriage she felt faint and sick. It was almost impossible for her to process the information. So mentally impaired was Joan that she could hardly remember her own name even on a good day. Joan could not remember the name of her husband who she called ‘Laddo’. How could she have given consent to marriage? Regular readers of this column will know that Joan’s marriage cancelled her original will. Situations like Joan’s are on the rise because we have an ageing population and people are marrying later. With her original 2004 will cancelled by the marriage Joan’s new husband was legally entitled to Joan’s half of the house that she lived in, Joan’s £35,000 in savings and all of her personal items. Daphne said the loss of the family keepsakes was the most distressing. Laddo lawfully inherited her grandfather’s letters from World War I and Daphne’s wedding dress which was still in her mother’s house. These personal items, Daphne states, were of no value to anyone but her. Daphne’s instinctive response was that Laddo had broken the law. The courts, however, disagreed. In December 2016 after a 4 day hearing the Judge decided that although it was doubtful Joan had the mental capacity to consent to marry, Laddo

10

remained her legal husband and was therefore entitled to inherit her estate. At the conclusion of the Court hearing Laddo arranged Joan’s funeral and arranged for Joan to be buried in an unmarked grave without inviting any of her family. In November 2018 Daphne’s MP brought the issue before Parliament in a Private Member’s Bill which sought to establish that marriage should no longer revoke a previous will in every case. It was passed unanimously for a second reading, but ran out of parliamentary time. Now with Covid restrictions lifting, Daphne is making a final desperate call for the Bill to be brought back to Parliament. Many academics believe that this is not a moment too soon. On the one hand it is fantastic that, thanks to deregulation of weddings people have a wider choice of wedding venues but this cannot be at the expense of not safeguarding those who are vulnerable. People who are impaired cognitively can be befriended by those with only one thing on their mind. There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK and their average lifespan is 81 years and so there is huge scope for these kind of marriages. To those who have vulnerable older relatives or friends Daphne has one message be careful. Daphne had contacted her mother’s GP, the police and social services whilst her mother was alive about Laddo living in her mother’s home. They all advised that in the absence of any harm there was nothing they could do. Daphne believes that the law has to be changed so that no-one suffers in the way her family have suffered. Holistic Health by Dr Damien T. O’Dwyer BSc, PGDipSc, MChiro, PhD

Lessons in Health, Care and Resilience The Holistic Trinity – from an Expert in All Three I recently had the pleasure of meeting a Chiropractic colleague by the name of Dr Audrey Murphy. Dr Murphy is the founder of Trinity Chiropractic and Acupuncture in Highcliffe. She is a highly skilled and respected Doctor of Chiropractic. Audrey had a car accident late last year where her shoulder was badly injured. Her injuries were severe and debilitating enough for her to make the difficult decision to close her Highcliffe Clinic.

A Lesson in the Nature of Health Dr Murphy’s story regarding her injury highlights one of the cruellest aspects of health: its fragility! Audrey was devastated to have to come to the decision to close her clinic. It is a reminder to all of us that one moment in time can change our health and have far-reaching and unexpected consequences. Your health is something that requires nurturing, maintenance, good management, and some degree of luck. Afterall, if you do not look after your health – who will?

With Your Health You have more than 1,000 Dreams Without it? You have only 1.

A Lesson in the Nature of Caring The next lesson Dr Murphy taught me is the nature of caring: true care cannot be switched off, it cannot be taught, and cannot be faked! Audrey’s thoughts have turned not to self-pity but for the concern and responsibility for the care of her patients. She recognised that if she could no longer provide care for the people that sought her help, then she wanted to guide people to where they could access care similar to her clinical management. She approached me to see if we would take over from where she left off. Dr Murphy chose us because of shared principles of caring, holistic practice and chiropractic techniques.

It is a compliment that Dr Murphy has entrusted us to provide that care. We are honoured to be asked to do this but carries with it a weight of responsibility to provide the high quality of care that people received from Trinity.

People Do Not Care How Much You Know Until They Know How Much You Care

A Lesson in Resilience, Adaptability, and Inner Strength True health requires an ability to adapt to your changing abilities and activities of daily living. This adaptability demonstrates your inner strength, projects a positive mental attitude and resilience that you can cope with the trials and tribulations that the world can throw at you. Audrey is a life-long learner in Chiropractic (both human and veterinary), Acupuncture and even Epidemiology! This personality trait has given her the ability to pivot when she required it the most. Dr Murphy has decided to turn her considerable skills to the care of our four-legged friends. She is a fully-qualified animal chiropractor and has shifted her practice to looking after dogs, cats and horses. Our community will continue to benefit from her knowledge and skill. This quote from David Weir CBE, 6 Time Gold Medallist, 8 Time London Marathon Winner and Paralympic Legend sums it up perfectly.

Greece Santorini – 120 miles southeast from Mainland Greece it is one of the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea which was devasted by a volcanic eruption in the 16th Century BC. This shaped its rugged landscape, now with beautiful whitewashed cubiform houses & blue roofs. The main towns are Fira & Oia which cling to the cliffs above an underwater crater. They overlook the sea, small islands to the west & beaches made up of black volcanic sand & some have red & white sand with pebbles. It is famous for dramatic views & stunning sunsets from Oia town. Oia is the more luxurious village with romantic & fine dining restaurants with high end shopping. Explore the volcano, boat tours, wine, hikes, nightlife, great food & clear blue waters which are wonderfully refreshing. London to Santorini flight takes 4 hours and cruise ships call here.

on the north shore of the island. Crete is a diverse vibrant land packed with ancient ruins, buzzing cities and breath-taking beaches. The Island is mostly mountainous and is defined by a high mountain range from West to East - the highest point is Mount Ida. It is a 5 – 7 hours walk through rough terrain so you will need a certain degree of fitness, but it is amazing.

when the weather is fine you can walk to this island through the shallow water. It is a protected nature reserve and known for its pink sand.

Chocolate Mousse Cake

This recipe is so simple to do, but always looks great and goes down very easily! Line the bottom of the tin with parchment paper - cut it a little larger than the base so the tin sides can keep it in place.

300g chocolate – you can use milk, dark or a mixture of both 1 tablespoon water 2 egg whites 2oz caster sugar 1/2 pint whipping cream 2oz butter 5 chocolate Hob Nob biscuits Equipment 6 inch spring form tin Parchment paper Electric whisk 3 bowls Rolling pin Small saucepan

44

Put the Hob Nobs in a bowl and crush with the end of the rolling pin until they are like crumbs. Melt the butter in the saucepan or microwave, and add to the biscuit crumbs, mixing well. Put the crumb mixture into the bottom of the tin and press down. Place the tin in the fridge. Melt the chocolate in a bowl with a tablespoon of water, either in a microwave or in a bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, Do not stir. Once melted, take off the heat and put to one side. Whisk the egg whites until stiff, then add the sugar and whisk again. Put the cream in a bowl, and whisk until it is as stiff as the egg whites (when all the ingredients are the same thickness they will mix easily). Fold the egg, cream and chocolate in together and pour into the tin over the biscuit crumbs. Put in the fridge and chill overnight or for at least 6 hours. Serve with lightly whipped cream if you want to be indulgent. Tips: When you have to mix egg whites into any mixture, if there is sugar in the recipe add some of the sugar to the whites. This stabilises them and makes them easier to mix, thus loosing less of the incorporated air. You can add alcohol to this recipe; if so, add it when you mix all the ingredients together and not straight into the chocolate, as this can cause the chocolate to clump.

‘The Foundling’ Stacey Halls

London 1764, Bess Bright gives birth to her illegitimate daughter and takes her to The Foundling Hospital, handing over a token and promising to return and collect her little girl when she is better able to care for her. Six years later and Bess is shocked to find her daughter already claimed. Who has taken her? Why? Bereft at the loss of the child she never knew, Bess’ journey of discovery, deception and deceit begins. ‘One Good Deed’ by David Baldacci Poca City, 1949 and Aloysius Archer is free after serving time in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Archer finds work collecting debts for a local tycoon and gets pulled into a dangerous feud. When a body is found, Archer is top of the suspect list and framed for murder. Baldacci has delivered some popular page turning detective stories, but this is a different era; an ex-con turned gumshoe in 1940s small town America. The dialogue is a little stilted, but the complex plot is always well explored and explained. This is the first novel in a new Baldacci series. No doubt we will be seeing more of, “Call me Archer Ma’am” and learning more about this new character. Published by Pan ISBN 1529027500

This novel describes a realistic and vibrant London, from tavern to townhouse, and Halls peppers each scene with sharp characters, authentic dialogue, and a backdrop you can almost smell. This is also available as an audio book which works so well with the two main characters. This would make a great TV drama! Published by Manila Press ISBN 1838771409

‘American Dirt’ by Jeannine Cummins Lydia Perez owns a bookshop and lives with her husband, an investigative journalist and eightyear-old son Luca in Acapulco, Mexico. During a family barbecue, the local cartel shoot down fifteen members of her family and she escapes with her son. Their journey north, across the border to the United States, is a traumatic experience full of danger and hardship. Who can be trusted? How far will a mother go to protect her son? Cummins has researched the subject matter and crafted a story so poignant; you will find it hard to put down. This is one of those books that people will be discussing in years to come. My thanks to the Mandala Book Club that recommended this epic novel. Published by Tinder Press ISBN 1472261402

Local History

Brockenhurst to Christchurch

Now, I love my railways. One regret during the pandemic has been my inability to take to the tracks. In normal times, I write for the railway press, which includes sampling interesting routes ‘a la’ Michael Portillo (minus outlandish costumes), then reporting on them. It’s a nice way to earn a living. Even today, with the railways slightly less genteel than formerly, it’s a mode of travel knocking spots off automotive hades. Thanks to railway bogeyman Dr. Beeching, we’re not as well blessed locally as we were, having lost many of our routes in the 1960s, including the first one to cross the New Forest, a line from Brockenhurst nort rth-west t to Holmsley (formerly Christchurch Road) and Ringwood, a port rtion t of ‘Castleman’s Corkscrew’ as it became known, which opened in June 1847. Christchurch Road was the nearest railhead for the Priory ryy town until Christchurch got its first town centre station in 1862, which prompted its renaming as ‘Holmsley’. The whole of that first line closed to passengers in May 1964

aficionados might be interested to know that a 1974 remake of ‘Brief Encounter’ was shot at Brockenhurst. It starred Richard Burt rton t and Sophia Loren.

The Railway Hotel in Ringwood, a reminder of the town’s lost station.

One of the developments that undoubtedly contributed to the closure of the circuitous Brockenhurst-RingwoodWimborne route was the opening of another, later line west from Brockenhurst, the southern, ‘coastal’ route through Sway, New Milton and Hinton Admiral, which opened through to Christchurch and beyond in March 1888. The irony was this being the ‘new kid on the block’ as far as local railways were concerned, yet seeing off fff the earlier, established competition.

444027 at Brockenhurst’s Platform 1 with a Lymington branch train far right on Platform 4.

Ghostly platform at Holmsley, which was formerly Christchurch Road station.

Brockenhurst was a busy junction with the Ringwood and Sway lines, plus the Lymington branch, which opened in July 1858, so predating the Sway line by around 30 years. Movie

I’m heading down the ‘new’ route, so it’s next stop Sway, which opened with the line in March 1888.

Sway station.

Between 1956 and 1967 there was a camping coach here (two of them from 1959), the holiday destination of choice for folk maybe heading here from Waterloo and provincial stations furt rther t afield with their lugg ggage, g intent on a bit of kip and self-catering in a convert rted t rail carriage while express trains thundered through. It seems a very ryy British kind of holiday. New Milton (again, March 1888) could have been named, well, almost anyt ything. t It seems ‘Milton’ was favoured, except there were other Miltons in the country ryy (confusing), so ‘Bart rton’ t was posited as an alternative, except for other Bart rtons t (same problem), eventually leading to ‘New Milton’ being adopted when a new sub post offi ffice fi opened with that name.

New Milton station viewed from the footbridge.

Hinton Admiral opened as plain ‘Hinton’ (March 1888) before becoming the extravagant ‘Hinton Admiral for Highcliff ffe-onf Sea’ (May 1888), then today’s ‘Hinton Admiral’ at some mists of time moment.

Hinton Admiral station.

It’s funny the station is called that as there’s no place called Hinton Admiral as such, but there is the Grade I listed, early-18th century ryy Hinton Admiral House it shares its name with. None of this is surprising as there is some odd nomenclature on the UK rail network, including stations named from pubs. Hinton had its camping coach too, briefly before WW WW2, W and then again from 1954 to ’65.

According to my records, today’s Christchurch station opened earlier than the others on the Sway line, in May 1886. How come? Well, because the railway had already arrived in Christchurch, court rtesy t of the light railway that opened between Ringwood and the town in 1862 (prompting the renaming of Christchurch Road to Holmsley). The 1862 station was t’other side of Bargates from today’s. In 1870, this line was extended on to Bournemouth, crossing Bargates via a level crossing (thank goodness that’s not the case today!)

On 19th May 2012, a day of celebration was held at Christchurch station, including a mayoral visit (by train obviously) to celebrate 150 years of Christchurch station. You needed to be on the ball though. What was being celebrated was a century ryy and a half since the first town centre station opened, not the current one, which remains resolutely 1880s. It has some nice late-Victorian features though including a ‘VR’ letterbox by the main entrance.

The entrance at Christchurch station. The letter box to the right of the door is Victorian Back in the days of South West Trains 444005 at Christchurch’s Platform 1 with a train bound for London Waterloo.

The new station (today’s) opened in 1886, in readiness for receiving the line from Sway, which duly arrived in 1888 turning Christchurch into a small junction (until the 1930s when the line to Ringwood was closed). The Bargates level crossing was replaced by today’s roadbridge (thank goodness), along with furt rther t bridge works to cross the Avon, all in readiness for the line’s opening.

Take care & stay safe folks. Steve Roberts Steve Robert rts’ t first book, ‘Lesser Known Christchurch’, was published in August 2015, by Dorset book specialist Roving Press. His second book, ‘Lesser Known Bournemouth’, was published in November 2019.
