Our business is about more than just heating and air conditioning. We have been active at the JCC, donating to the Main Event, Fore the Kids golf tournament, and sponsoring the youth soccer program. Rosenberg Indoor Comfort is also a “Friend of the J” sponsor. On a personal level, the JCC has been an integral part of our lives. When I was a kid, I hung out at the JCC. Both of our sons attended the Block and Dreeben School for Young Children, and both of them take part in the camping programs at the JCC. We believe the JCC is such a great organization and we are glad to support it.

member engagement Reach for the stars

Message From the President/CEO Saul F. Levenshus Well, February has arrived and I am already looking forward to warm weather and all the great activities that take place at the JCC in the coming spring and summer months. As the weather begins to heat up, many of our programs will head outside to take advantage of San Antonio’s mild climate. Our Youth Soccer Academy (see page 16) kicks off in mid-March and we anticipate nearly 300 kids ages 4 and up will be enrolled. In April, our swim lessons begin for kids of all ages and then Swim Team dives into action in May. Our Annual Fore the Kids Golf Tournament will take place at the Quarry Golf Club on Friday, May 4. If you play golf or know someone else who does, spread the word and consider joining us for a great day of golf all in support of youth services at the JCC. And for our tennis enthusiasts, warmer weather also means it’s time to get back out onto the courts. If you haven’t already ventured out to meet our team of tennis professionals, I’d urge you to do so. They’ve put together a full schedule of classes, clinics, and leagues aimed at both adults and juniors (see page 11 & 17). And our Tennis Clubhouse provides a perfect complement to the best courts in the area with plenty of free open court time, better and more secure access to the courts, men’s and women’s bathrooms and changing spaces, and areas inside and out to promote socialization and friendship.

And, before you know it, summer camp will be here. Our new J-Camp Brochure was just mailed with all the information needed to help you enjoy another summer of fun at the J. Prospective campers will be able to visit our website and browse the wide range of camp activities and enjoy pictures and memories from last year’s camp. And once you’re registered, the fun really begins. This year’s theme, “Once Upon A Summer” promises to deliver memories to last a lifetime. Our Camp Open House (see page 15) will be held on Tuesday, March 27, from 3-6:30pm. Ask about our early registration discounts, which will be in effect through March 30 for all JCC members. Register early while space exists. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. There are several great activities and events coming your way indoors that will keep you entertained and enriched over the next several weeks and months. Our 17th Annual Jewish Film Festival opens at the Santikos Palladium IMAX at the RIM, February 17-21, with another great line-up of films. This year’s event promises to be one of our best. Check out the schedule on page 8 or visit our website to purchase your tickets. We are also pleased to present the final lectures from our JCC Author Series, beginning on Thursday, March 1, at 7pm, as the JCC presents “Black Boychik”, featuring Sarge, a stand-up comedian and entertainer, and Emily Paster on

April 26 at 7pm on “The Joys of Jewish Preserving”. For more information about either of these events including ticket sales, please visit our website or contact Maya Siler at 210-302-6867. And don’t forget to sign up early for our annual First Night Passover Seder, set for Friday March 30. This fun, family-oriented holiday celebration is always a big hit and a great way to welcome Passover. Of course, let’s not forget that The Sheldon Vexler Theatre (page 7), now in its 19th season. The final two productions this season promise to be outstanding, with performances of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, A Steampunk Tragedy (February 10-March 4), followed by the highly acclaimed production of Steel Magnolias, May 12 – June 10. It all adds up to an exciting few months at the J; and it’s all right there at your fingertips. Browse this issue for more information on all of the above or visit our website for the most up-to-date details on the programs of your choosing. We’re glad the JCC is able to bring you such a broad array of special services and programs. We appreciate your on-going support and we’re glad you belong here. There’s something about this place®.

member engagement Reach for the Motivated Members Earn *Rewards all Year Long!

Your Story: Meet The Pecks Cathy “Cat” and Carl Peck joined the JCC in 2005, having just returned to San Antonio following Carl’s retirement from GUND, a toy company. They found their way to the JCC after a strong recommendation from Dr. Mel Baden, himself a former member AND the person from whom the Pecks purchased their home. “We did! Thanks Dr. Baden!”

Get fit AND rewarded in 2018 – check in to the J for your chance to earn rewards and prizes! Last month, we introduced two new incentives to keep you motivated, moving, and fit!

Both Cathy and Carl have been involved in athletics their entire lives. Cathy played basketball and ran track, while Carl played in the Minnesota Twins organization. “It seems that we have been striving to stay in shape as long as we can remember. The JCC is just the current stage in our attempt to do so. Living close by allows us to work out almost every day, and eliminates the excuses for not showing up.”

The JCC will be giving away $50 in CASH to one member each month for checking in to the J 5 or more times! So make sure, as always, to use our App or your membership card to check-in for your workout. For our year-long incentive, once you reach 25 checkins, you earn a J towel; at 50 check-ins, earn a $25 restaurant.com gift card! Check your reward status by logging in to your Online Services Account and clicking on “View Reward Points.” We can’t wait to reward you! *Some restrictions apply. Members who win the cash prize will be called by Membership and agree to have their photo taken and used for promotional purposes. Visit jccsanantonio.org/currentmembers for further details.

Cathy, who never misses a day of getting her sweat on in group exercise classes, says “The variety of aerobic classes from HiiT, Step It Up, and BodyPump™ are great for me. I can usually find something in the morning or evening that fits into my schedule.” Her hard work and dedication shows! Carl is often seen in the Hendin Fitness Center or swimming in the pool, followed by relaxing in the whirlpool after a hard workout. In addition to fitness, the Pecks enjoy an array of other activities at the JCC, including award-winning productions at The Sheldon Vexler Theatre, attending the Main Event annual fundraiser, San Antonio Symphony performances, and their favorite – massages from the J’s own licensed massage therapist and certified personal trainer, Dee Dee Moore. “The JCC staff is great! The environment also promotes lots of strong friendships that continue away from the J,” Cathy exclaims. “It’s like stepping into your own home… very familiar and comfortable. School kids, basketball and tennis players, swimmers, weight-lifters, senior citizens, and much more. Not your stereotypical gym.” Cathy and Carl, we are glad You Belong Here®!

The highly anticipated steampunk adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Hamlet, opens at the Sheldon Vexler Theatre Saturday, Feb. 10. Directed and adapted for The Vex stage by Ken Frazier, this production has been updated a bit with slightly modernized language to fit the alternative-world, steampunk design. The overall story, however, remains the same. Hamlet (John Stillwaggon) has been summoned home to Denmark for his father’s funeral. His mother, Gertrude (Theresa Bishop), has already remarried – and not just any person. She’s married Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius (Jim Mammarella), his deceased father’s brother. To make matters worse, Claudius has crowned himself King of Denmark, even though that title should have gone to Hamlet. There’s a ghost (Rob Barron), a love interest (Chelsea Steele, as Ophelia), a soliloquy or two, and plenty of Shakespearean death to go around. It’s everything anyone who enjoys Shakespeare could want, and more. Written sometime between 1599 and 1602, Hamlet is often considered one of Shakespeare’s most famous and powerful tragedies, and may be among the most influential works of world literature in general. In its entirety, it is also his

longest play; The Vex production will be two and half hours, adapted down from the original fourplus hours. The play is based on a Norse legend written by Saxo Grammaticus in Latin around the year 1200. The original stories, which consists of sixteen books, tell of the rise and fall of rulers of Denmark. Books three and four recount the tale of Amleth, Saxo’s Hamlet. There are multiple editions, or quartos, of Hamlet, each a bit different than the one before. For example, in one, Hamlet’s soliloquy begins “To be or not to be, that is the question,” while in another one, he says “To be or not to be. Aye, there’s the point/To die to sleep, is that all? Aye all.” To adapt the script for The Vex stage, Ken Frazier took elements from each of the various quartos and folios, tweaking words or settings to suit the steampunk theme. The result is not to be missed.

Be Good to Your *Guf: Heart Healthy Diet - 8 Steps to Prevent Heart Disease 1. Control your portion size: How much you eat is just as important as what you eat. Overloading your plate, taking seconds and eating until you feel stuffed can lead to eating more calories than you should. Use a small plate or bowl to help control your portions. Eat larger portions of low-calorie, nutrient-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, and smaller portions of highcalorie, high-sodium foods, such as refined, processed or fast foods. This strategy can shape up your diet as well as your heart and waistline. 2. Eat more vegetables and fruits: Vegetables and fruits are good sources of vitamins and minerals. Featuring vegetables and fruits in your diet can be easy. Keep vegetables washed and cut in your refrigerator for quick snacks. Keep fruit in a bowl in your kitchen so that you’ll remember to eat it. Choose recipes that have vegetables or fruits as the main ingredients, such as vegetable stirfry or fresh fruit mixed into salads. 3. Select whole grains: Whole grains are good sources of fiber and other nutrients that play a role in regulat-

(*Hebrew for body)

ing blood pressure and heart health. You can increase the amount of whole grains in a heart-healthy diet by making simple substitutions for refined grain products. Or be adventuresome and try a new whole grain, such as whole-grain farro, quinoa or barley. 4. Limit unhealthy fats: Limiting how much saturated and trans fats you eat is an important step to reduce your blood cholesterol and lower your risk of coronary artery disease. A high blood cholesterol level can lead to a buildup of plaques in your arteries, called atherosclerosis, which can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke. An easy way to add healthy fat (and fiber) to your diet is ground flaxseed. Flaxseeds are small brown seeds that are high in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. Studies have found that flaxseeds may help lower cholesterol in some people. You can grind the seeds in a coffee grinder or food processor and stir a teaspoon of them into yogurt, applesauce or hot cereal. 5. Choose low-fat protein sources: Lean meat, poultry and fish, low-fat dairy products, and eggs are some of your best sources of protein. But be careful to choose lower fat options, such as skim milk rather than whole

milk and skinless chicken breasts rather than fried chicken patties. 6. Reduce the sodium in your food · Healthy adults have no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium a day (about a teaspoon of salt) · People age 51 or older, African-Americans, and people who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease have no more than 1,500 mg of sodium a day 7. Plan ahead: Create daily menus: You know what foods to feature in your heart-healthy diet and which ones to limit. Now it’s time to put your plans into action. Create daily menus using the six strategies listed above. 8. Allow yourself an occasional treat: Allow yourself an indulgence every now and then. A candy bar or handful of potato chips won’t derail your heart-healthy diet. But don’t let it turn into an excuse for giving up on your healthy-eating plan. PARENTING WORKSHOPS

Farmyard Stock Show Comes to Block and Dreeben School for Young Children On Tuesday, February 13, children in the early childhood program will participate in our annual visit with Cowgirl Cheri and her farmyard animals. They will have the opportunity to see a miniature horse and donkey, goat, sheep, llama, calf, chickens, ducks, and rabbits. Children from our sister schools in the Cultural Friendship Exchange program are invited, as well as parents in our program.

Jewish Value of the Month: Kindness to Animals In Jewish teaching, compassion, one of the highest virtues, is to be extended to animals as well as to humans. There is even a rule in the Talmud that before sitting down to a meal one must first see that the domestic animals are fed. Tza’ar Ba’alei Chayim, kindness to animals, is a mitzvah that can easily engage young children. At the Block and Dreeben School for Young Children, we will read stories about kindness to animals, demonstrate kindness to the animals who will visit the school in February, and talk about how children can be kind to the animals that live in their home.

New Family Meeting

A meeting will be held for prospective families who want to learn about the nationally accredited Block and Dreeben School for Young Children on Wednesday, February 7, at 7pm. The philosophy and curriculum will be highlighted, and a tour of the classrooms will be given. Reservations to attend can be made by registering online at www.jccsanantonio.org/newfamily. Registration opens February 7 for current JCC Members and February 12 for the Community.

• Camp offers a supervised, positive environment in the outdoors where kids can laugh and grow within a set of controlled boundaries.

• Camp programs provide opportunities to develop key life skills: responsibility, cooperation, courage, and self-esteem.

J-Camp has received accreditation status since 2004. There are more than 300 criteria the camp is evaluated on. Our camp is only one of five that is accredited by ACA in the San Antonio area. You can be proud knowing that you made the right choice for your child!

10th anniversary of Jewish Disabilities Awareness and Inclusion Month (JDAIM), a global campaign to advance disability inclusion in Jewish communities. Over the past 18 months, the Barshop JCC has undertaken an effort to assess our readiness to respond to the needs of those differently abled. With support from the JCC Board of Directors and funds received through grants from a consortium that includes the Gladys & Ralph Lazarus Family Foundation and the Jewish Federation, we have undertaken a two year self-assessment to help us identify emerging needs, develop a series of referral and collaborative resources, and create new networks and paths to strengthen our support for these individuals. This past November, in an effort to raise awareness and identify new resources, the JCC sponsored a film presentation of Life, Animated from the ReelAbilities Film Festival, the largest film festival in the country dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories and artistic expressions of people with different abilities. We also hosted a panel discussion with members from the San Antonio community involved with accessibility including; Morgan’s Wonderland’s entertainment director, HEB’s Diversity and Inclusion manager, and specialists from the JCC, NISD, and Temple Beth El. In December, our JCC was represented at a special Inclusion Think Tank hosted by the JCC’s of North America, to shape a continental initiative to support inclusion in the JCC movement. These events and conversations to address common needs and concerns serve to support both our JCC members and our community at large and have further informed us as we strive to meet those needs.

Our summer Inclusion Camp, now in its fourteenth year, continues to support families with children that have different needs and who are fully included in day-to-day Summer J-Camp activities. With support facilitators in ratios of 1:1 or 1:2, we provide opportunities for campers with different abilities through arts and crafts, sports, nature, dance, and water acclimation activities, all integrated in the typical camp day. As a direct result of our summer inclusion services, our ECD and After School staff and program directors are more aware and better prepared to meet the needs of young families. In the coming months, we will also be conducting a survey to further assist us in collecting information to help develop activities designed to engage and serve young adults with different abilities.

Refer to our Inclusive Programming tab on our jccsanantonio.org website (on our home page under “About Us”) and look for the new Inclusion key on the web and in our printed guides; when a program or event is accessible, we will include this graphic to highlight programs or services of interest to differently abled individuals and their significant others. An example may be a film screening that includes the option to check out a loop, the inclusion program with Summer J-Camp, or an event that is wheelchair accessible, such as the Film Festival or an author lecture. To alert us to your special need, contact Betsy Cowan, Special Needs and Inclusion Project Manager, at cowanb@ jcc-sa.org or call 210302-6824. We mean it when we say “you belong here®”!

Richard H. Lazor, D.D.S.

Our Doctor A native of San Antonio, Dr. Lazor received his undergraduate degree from University of Texas at Austin where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He earned his DDS degree from the University Of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1978 where he also served on the clinical faculty for 10 years. Dr. Lazor is a member of the American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association and the San Antonio District Dental Society. He has also been chosen to be a member of the esteemed Seattle Study Club, one of the most advanced and exciting dental continuing education groups today. Aside from dentistry, Dr. Lazor’s favorite hobby is restoring and working on classic muscle cars and attending car shows.

Building a foundation of trust by treating our patients as special individuals is vital to our success. We understand how uneasy some patients can feel about their dental visits, and we know that we can make a difference by providing a relaxing and positive experience. A standard of excellence in personalized dental care enables us to provide the quality dental services our patients deserve. We provide comprehensive treatment planning and use restorative and cosmetic dentistry to achieve your optimal dental health. Should a dental emergency occur, we make every effort to see and care for you as soon as possible.

About Our Practice As a practice, we truly believe that preventative care and education are the keys to optimal dental health. We strive to provide “dental health care” vs. “disease care;” that’s why we focus on thorough exams – checking the overall health of your teeth and gums, performing oral cancer exams, and taking X-rays when necessary. We also know that routine cleanings, flossing, sealants, and fluoride are all helpful in preventing dental disease. Not only are we focused on the beauty of your smile, we’re also concerned about your health. Current research shows that chronic inflammation in the mouth contributed to disease of the heart, circulatory system, diabetes and a number of other systemic medical problems. A review of your medical history can help us stay informed of your overall health, any new medications, and any illnesses that may impact your dental health.

Our Team Part of our commitment to serving our patients includes providing information that helps them to make more informed decisions about their oral health needs. This website is a resource we hope you’ll find both useful and interesting.
