TheJCConRampartwasahomeawayfromhomeinthesummerfor meandmysiblings.Ifweweren’tinthepool(oronthedivingboard!), wewereplayingtennis,intheyouthloungeorgym;

TheBlockandDreebenSchoolforYoungChildrenprovideda nurturingfoundationformychildren’sloveoflearningand exploration;

KidsClubandSummerCampofferedmyhusbandandIanoptionfor ourkidstoenjoyasafe,nurturing,funenvironmentforoutofschool timeactivities;

CallawilljoinJewisheducatorsfrom acrosstheUnitedStatesandIsraelin ReggioEmilia,Italy,foranintensive week-longseminarinDecember The PreschoolsandInfant-Toddler CentersofReggioEmiliaarewidely recognizedassomeofthetopearlychildhoodprogramsin theworld.Theseminaraimstoprovideanin-depthstudy oftheReggioEmiliaschools'values,principles,and practicesthroughaJewishlens.Discussionswillfocuson incorporatingJewishtraditionsintotheReggioApproach. Thiswillincludetoursofschools,participatinginresearch projects,andseveraleducationaltrainingsbeforeand aftertheseminarinItaly.

Childrenlistenedtostories,sangsongs,heardtheshofar,andlearnedaboutthedifferentwayseachholidayiscelebrated InSeptemberwecelebratedRoshHashanah,theJewishNewYear.Classeshadtheopportunitytoexploreapplesandhoneyto sweetentheNewYear.ThechildrenalsolearnedaboutYomKippurandSukkot.

YomKippuristheDayofAtonement.Thisisadifficultholidayforchildrentograsp.Teachersfocusonwhatitmeanstobesorryand toforgiveusingavarietyofbookssuchasTheHardestWord:AYomKippurStory.

Sukkotisaholidaywherechildrenhavetheopportunitytohaveamultisensoryexperience ChildrenmadedecorationsfortheSukkah, smelledtheetrog,andshookthelulav.ClasseshadtheopportunitytoparticipateindifferentactivitiesintheSukkahaswell.They hadmusicwithMs Janieandsomeclassesenjoyedapicniclunch

AsOctoberbegins,thechildrenwillbelearningaboutSimchatTorah.SimchatTorahisacelebrationwhenthefinalportionofthe Torahisreadandisbegunagain.ChildreninteractwiththeTorah,dance,andcelebrate.TheylovetoseetheTorahunrolledand rerolledagain

OneofourgoalsatTheSchoolforYoungChildrenistomaketheseholidayexperiencesmeaningfulandhelpchildrenconnecttothe holidaysondevelopmentally-appropriatelevels Teachershaveopportunitiesthroughouttheyeartolearnabouttheholidaysand collaboratetofindnewandexcitingwaystohelpthechildrenconnecttoeachone.Bykeepingtheseexperienceshands-onand interactive,childrenrememberthemfromyeartoyearandlookforwardtothecelebrations!
