Celebrated on 1 August, Yorkshire Day honours the county’s heritage and heroes like Alan Bennett and the Brontë sisters.
Aside from whippets and flat caps, food is a big part of Yorkshire culture, and we want to know your recipes!
Yorkshire puddings, egg custards, parkin (with or without cheese), rhubarb, Wensleydale cheese - how do you eat yours?
Let us know if you have any unusual food traditions like tea in a Yorkshire pudding, or cheese on cake, and we’ll share them in Praad News :)
Barnsley has reached a record low in smoking during pregnancy, now at just 8% - a 1.7% drop in the past year and down from 20.5% in 2014/15.
This achievement reflects the dedication of Barnsley Hospital’s maternity team and the Barnsley Tobacco Control Alliance. Thanks to strong local partnerships, we’re making real progress in protecting mothers and babies.
We remain committed to making smoking invisible in Barnsley and supporting residents to quit for good.
Together, we're building a healthier future.
The team were recently asked to attend a council meeting to present their success - great work!

Educator Marcus Dearns, Advanced Physiotherapist Shahla Fisher, and Falls Prevention Lead Rachel Jane, presented at the global End PJ Paralysis summit to highlight the fantastic work we are doing to reduce deconditioning at Barnsley Hospital.
#EndPJparalysis is a global movement embraced by nurses, therapists and medical colleagues. Its aim is to value patients’ time and help more people to live the richest, fullest lives possible by reducing immobility, muscle deconditioning, and dependency at the same time as protecting cognitive function, social interaction and dignity.
At the summit, the team celebrated the educational work at Barnsley Hospital, alongside the impact of ward based and hospital interventions such as the commode challenge, use of dining rooms and exercise sessions going on in the hospital.

This project improved emergency crash trolley stocking by creating a centralised stock cupboard accessible out of hours.
The Resus team supported by auditing 61 trolleys. The project team introduced SOPs, and trained staff on restocking procedures.
A shared budget code supported the initiative, and visual aids helped staff locate items. Monthly checks and incident reports confirmed 100% of trolleys were fully stocked during audits.
The project, now business as usual, received strong support from ANPs. Ongoing monitoring will ensure continued compliance and rapid issue escalation. Well done to all involved.

In June, South Yorkshire Integrated Care System (Health and Wellbeing Hub) hosted a webinar ‘Caregiving – how to avoid burnout’ - a thought-provoking talk from award-winning author Hazel Carter.
Hazel was working full time and caring for her mum (who had vascular dementia) when suddenly her husband was told he had six months to two years to live. Caught between very different caring duties, Hazel had to quickly work out priorities and find wa to cope.

“The biggest issues caregivers face are lack of time, workload and juggling appointments, other people’s reactions and feelings, and having to cope as a carer while having no experience.”

Marie Tidball, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, visited Barnsley Hospital Maternity Ward, to discuss how to improve the safety of maternity care for local disabled women.
Marie met with Joint Director of Midwifery for Barnsley and Rotherham Sarah Petty, as well as the local Royal College of Midwives representative, and midwives working at the hospital, including those working as part of the Patients Voices team.
Marie said:
“I was born in Barnsley Hospital, so it was a bit emotional going back to visit the maternity ward. It was absolutely fantastic to listen to the brilliant work of local midwives, and to hear their enthusiasm to spearhead the work to improve the safety of maternity care for disabled women.”
