Ontheair: MaternityStopSmokingTeam

Our Maternity Stop Smoking Team was interviewed by BBC Radio Sheffield this week – about their achievements in dramatically reducing smoking rates in pregnant women.

The team has cut smoking at the time of delivery (SATOD) from 13.6% in 2021-2022 to 8% in 2024-2025. In August this year, there were 279 births and just nine of the mothers were smoking.

The team, set up in 2014, has worked with Yorkshire Smokefree and the Healthy Lives hospital team to cut smoking rates.

Rebecca Barker was joined for the radio interviews by Kaye Mann, Public Health Principal for the Public Health and Communities Directorate at Barnsley Council, as well as a lady who is currently pregnant and receiving support from the service.

The piece was broadcast on BBC Radio Sheffield this week, and is on the BBC South Yorkshire website.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen.

Caused by prenatal alcohol exposure, FASD affects brain and body development. It is a spectrum, with each person experiencing different challenges, often alongside other conditions. At its core, FASD is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition, but people with FASD also have many strengths.

To mark International FASD Day on Tue 9 Sep, Walburgh Manhungira and Becky Parkinson hosted a stall in the antenatal clinic, sharing vital information and encouraging conversations about prevention, diagnosis, and support.

The message is clear for anyone planning a pregnancy or currently pregnant: There is no safe time, no safe amount and no safe type of alcohol to drink #Drymester.

The National Organisation for FASD has compiled a guide to help healthcare professionals avoid using stigmatising or blaming language around FASD. Access the FASD language guide

I’m very proud of the varied high-quality work of the patient safety team. By implementing processes that become part of every one’s daily work, the team produce results which have a positive impact on both patient safety and organisational learning.

In addition, the bereavement office function now sits within patient safety and dovetails the work of the medical examiner’s office.

The bereavement office will contact the bereaved of every deceased adult patient and soon will be providing the initial welfare call for Maternity and Paediatrics too.

This annual event aims to raise global awareness about patient safety and calls for united action on reducing patient harm.

The patient safety team are supporting our maternity, neonatal and paediatric colleagues in this year’s theme “Safe care for every new-born and every child".

Look out for them in person from 9am to 12pm on the day and on social media where there will be tweets and promotions.

Movingmessageaboutsecurity

The mother of a young man who died in the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017 gave a moving speech during a security award presentation to Barnsley Hospital.

Figen Murray OBE campaigned for six years to push through Martyn’s Law, after her son Martyn died in the terrorist bombing which killed 22 people. The law requires publicly accessible locations to bring in security measures to counter the threat of terrorism.

Figen was speaking about the importance of security as Barnsley Hospital was awarded three prestigious security awards: the Secured Environments Award, the British Standard 7958:2015 Accreditation, and the Secured By Design Award.

Dan Jarvis, Barnsley MP and also Minister of State for Security, praised the hospital security team, saying: “They have done genuinely national-leading work and achieved a unique triple distinction.”

ProudtoCareConference2025

Monday 6 and Monday 20 October

In less than a month we’ll be welcoming colleagues to our third annual Proud to Care Conference at the Holiday Inn.

The overarching theme this year is about ‘Working together for the people of Barnsley in a changing world.’

In a time of change, nowhere more so than in

the NHS, it is essential that we all work together as a team and adopt new ways of working in order to continue to deliver the outstanding care to the people of Barnsley, that we are all rightly proud of.

This year’s Conference features sessions on One Team, Person-Centred Care and Embracing Change and Digital to reflect that.

The conference team are really looking forward to welcoming around 200 of you in October for what we expect to be a fun, engaging and informative day.
