Brilliant Specialist Palliative Care Team

We're exposed to flu constantly through our work. Even if you're young and healthy, you can still catch it and pass it on - often before you even know you're unwell. That puts our most vulnerable patients at risk, along with friends, family, and colleagues who might have compromised immune systems, or be pregnant. Please have your vaccination this year.
Sarah Moppet Director of Nursing, Midwifery, and AHPs

After 24 dedicated years at Barnsley hospital, Moira is retiring to put her feet up and relax.
She began her journey on AMU where her compassion and professionalism quickly stood out, before becoming a valued team member on ward 24.
Her kindness, strength and unwavering commitment to patient care have left a lasting impact on colleagues and patients alike.
She will be deeply missed, and we wish her all the best in the future.
Thank you for everything Mo!

Monday 6 and Monday 20 October
It’s just one month until this year’s conference, so we’re taking a look at some of what delegates will learn.
Lauren and Hannah are facilitating the Embracing Change and Digital session which will help colleagues better understand the impact of change on us, and how we adapt and embrace change. Their session will also help delegates see the potential of our digital future, and how we all can shape the move from ‘analogue to digital’ set out in the NHS 10 year plan.

I’m looking forward to interacting with everyone who's coming to the conference. I've met such a broad array already from planning this conference, and it's people that I'd never normally meet.
It will be a really friendly day - it was last year and the previous year.

Hannah Brown Nurse Project Manager for Digital Transformation

Colleagues had a “dress rehearsal” for the conference this week to get feedback on their sessions
The Resus team wanted to reduce food waste following their catered Advanced Life Support (ALS) training for external delegates. It was crucial that delegate satisfaction was maintained. They reviewed the daily food offerings and made adjustments to reduce breakfast options and scale back lunch orders. They kept a close eye on delegate feedback through regular surveys, and adjusted the orders accordingly. They managed to reduce the average food cost per delegate from £16.76 to £10.69 - an annual saving of £1,800. Waste was minimised and delegate satisfaction remained high.
The Resus Team were able to reduce the amount of wasted food per course, ensure attendees remained happy with the offering, which in turn saved money.
Bev Mills Patient Safety Officer
The team will continue to monitor food waste and costs, and will engage with delegates to further refine food offerings in the training sessions.

Barnsley Hospital’s Head of Leadership and Organisational Development Tim Spackman is running the Great North run this weekend in aid of our Breast Care Appeal.

‘I went to the launch of the Breast Care Unit Appeal in June and was struck by the passion and commitment of the team and the need to invest to make it a better environment for both patients and colleagues. I was inspired to do something to help. Also, like so many others, I have had special people in my life impacted by breast cancer and know just how important it is to receive the best care and support at a difficult time.
