De-CaffeinatedDrinksTrial

Barnsley Hospital goes de-caf for patient wellbeing.

Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is proud to announce the success of its “De-caffeinated Drinks Project,” led by Rachel Jane and Lindsay Reynolds.

By introducing de-caf tea and coffee as the standard for patients, the initiative improved sleep,

improved sleep, reduced anxiety, and enhanced bladder health contributing to fewer falls and a 10% drop in pad usage.

A blind taste test revealed 57% preferred de-caf, and following a successful trial, the project is now rolled out trust-wide. Thank you to all involved in promoting healthier choices for our patients!

Celebrating ourSecurityTeam

As part of International Security Day Managing Director Michael Wright visited the Trust security office to personally thank the team for their dedication in keeping patients and staff safe around the clock. He spoke with the team and site manager Luke, sharing gratitude from the Trust and BFS Executive Teams.

Hospital security, especially within the NHS, is one of the most demanding roles, and we proudly recognise our G4S officers as valued colleagues and part of our hospital family.

Their hard work, alongside security professionals worldwide, truly deserves our appreciation.

ImprovingFrailtyRecognition: ClinicalFrailtyScore(CFS)inED

Efforts to improve frailty recognition in ED aimed to increase Clinical Frailty Score (CFS) documentation for patients aged 65+.

After initial setbacks, embedding CFS into Careflow assessments led to 30% compliance.

Key learning: integrating tasks into routine workflows is more effective than relying on memory or optional prompts.

We learned: that relying on people to remember to do an action outside of their usual process was less successful than embedding the action in the process.

Aprojectaimedtoreduce inappropriatephysiotherapy referralsfromAMU

It was discovered that a high number of inappropriate referrals were being sent from AMU to the Physiotherapy team as part of their care, which wasn’t benefitting the patient and had a negative impact on the efficiency of the service. We were able to reduce the rate of inappropriate referrals through education, clearer criteria, and visual patient mobility cues. An additional benefit is that staff understanding also improved. Future plans include sustained education, feedback systems, and audits to maintain progress and enhance referral quality.

The percentage of inappropriate referrals reduced from 29.72% to 8.57%!

SuccessatFirstLEOProjectPresentations!

Our first colleagues to complete the newly incorporated project element of the Leading an Empowered Organisation (LEO) course delivered their project presentations on Monday 7 July.

Observed by a carefully selected panel, line managers and peers, the event was a real celebration of their hard work and achievement in making a tangible improvement within their respective area.

“Although presenting is completely out of my comfort zone, I am so glad I did it. The project I delivered at presentation is definitely working in clinic practice so a worthwhile quality improvement for the department.”

Congratulations to all the LEO graduates.

Information for colleagues interested in attending LEO can be found here.

OurfirstThriveTogetherStaffNetworkConference

The Thrive Together Conference was an important milestone. It brought together internationally educated nurses, staff networks, staff members, senior leaders, executives, and partner organisations from Rotherham Hospital, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Sheffield Adult Social Care, and South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board.

Colleagues gathered to listen, learn, reflect, and collaborate to build a more inclusive and supportive workplace.

The conference also raised awareness about resources available to colleagues, empowering them to have a greater voice, influence change, and take an active role within the organisation.

Thank you to everyone involved for making it such a success.

BRILLIANT TEAM

AcuteResponseteam

I would like to nominate Claire Marple, the team manager, and all the ACPs for warmly welcoming the old ward phlebotomy team since 12/08/2024. They have been so supportive, patient, understanding, and caring to every one of us. They go above and beyond in everything they do.

Despite their own demanding roles, they’ve been there for us every step of the way.
