InnovationandQIAward
This award celebrates innovative ideas benefiting patients, families, staff, or the Hospital - new ideas enhancing patient care, whether through innovative processes, digital technology, or other means. It can involve new or newly applied ideas.
Antony Byram
Tony's QI project introduced the paediatric CAM boot guideline, improving care for children with stable lower limb injuries. This approach reduces reattendances, x-rays, and skin complications. Now standard in children's ED, it's shared with Sheffield Children's Hospital and part of a national study.
Emergency Department Nursing Team
The ED team eliminated pressure ulcers, supporting the Trust's goals of improving patient safety and reducing harm. Achieving zero ulcers for 12 months minimized pain, prolonged stays, and infection risks. This collaborative effort saved 44 bed days and exemplified the Trust's values by ensuring equitable care for high-risk patients.
Michelle Evans
Michelle's 'ED Care Bag' initiative supports patients with Learning Disabilities and Autism. The care bags reduce sensory overload with items like ear defenders and eye masks. Launched during Learning Disability Week 2024, the bags were designed with patient input.

To mark the end of Stress Awareness Month last week, we held a dedicated Pathways to Empowerment open day. The day featured Barnsley Council’s ‘Washing Line’ Project, which helps raise awareness of domestic abuse awareness through education and engagement as a travelling art installation.
Domestic abuse experts were available as part of our open day, offering valuable information about support services and intervention st t i il bl th h
Amy Hoyle, Projects and Contracts Officer, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, said: “The Washing Line Project was created to highlight the prevalence of domestic abuse and sexual harm in Barnsley. Together with survivors, their children, providers, and members of the public, we designed 137 T-shirts that we dubbed 'The Washing Line Project'. These 137 T-shirts were made to represent the 137 reported cases of domestic abuse every week in Barnsley.
“For the past year, the project has been housed in various libraries throughout the borough, and we are pleased to announce the project is now in Barnsley Hospital.
“We hope this not only raises awareness but also emboldens individuals to come forward and seek help if they or someone they know is being affected by domestic abuse. You are not alone.”
IDAS have worked closely with Barnsley Hospital and as a part of a recent pilot, an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) will be on-site at Occupational Health and Wellbeing on a Friday, on a fortnightly basis to give staff an opportunity to access domestic violence support more easily. IDAS support is free, confidential, and inclusive.
