QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

DischargeTeam’sED PresenceCuts UnnecessaryHospital Admissions

A proactive quality improvement project led by Dawn Winterbottom –alongside key team members Kerry, Natalie, and Amy – has successfully reduced avoidable hospital admissions by embedding the discharge team directly within the Emergency Department (ED).

Following a “criteria to admit” audit, which showed an average of five daily admissions without medical need, the team trialled a new approach across two fortnight-long periods in February and April 2024. Of the 93 patients seen, 53 were safely discharged without requiring admission.

Their early intervention prevented unnecessary ward moves and hospital stays, helping patients avoid deconditioning and leading to improved outcomes. The project has now been expanded, with the discharge team supporting ED and CDU Monday to Friday, and continuing to cover CDU at weekends— despite ongoing challenges accessing community services out of hours.

Eat Drink Dress Move Easter Egg Hunt

Prizes will be given to the ward, staff members, therapists and volunteers that have supported the

FutureHealthcareHeroesLearn VitalSkillsatBarnsleyNHS Academy

Barnsley College and and Barnsley Hospital team up to build the next generation of NHS stars.

It’s not every day you see a dummy giving birth or being sick – but that’s exactly what our governors saw on a recent visit to Barnsley College’s incredible NHS Academy.

And let’s just say, they were impressed.

Sarah Moppett, Deputy Chief Nurse, said: “I was incredibly impressed with the simulation facilities at Barnsley College. Our partnership is so important –it opens doors for young people and helps us deliver better healthcare for Barnsley.

Huge thanks to our college colleagues for everything they do.”

So what’s all the fuss about?

The NHS Academy is a oneof-a-kind training hub for students – where written coursework meets real-life, hands-on hospital action.

We’re talking mock wards, lifelike patients (yes, they vomit and choke) and fullscale simulations to teach bedside manner, compassion and communication.

Each year, over 1,000 students – including 650 teens and 400+ adult learners – join health and social care courses at the college. Around 150 go on to university, fulfilling dreams of becoming nurses, midwives and paramedics.

Thanks to our solid partnership, students get real insights into NHS life –some will even end up caring for the same community they trained in. Now that’s what we call full circle.

Barnsley’s NHS heroes of tomorrow? They’re already on the way.

Barnsley’s BCG vaccination team is celebrating a huge success after surpassing NHS England’s target of vaccinating 80 per cent of eligible babies by day 28 of life. After months of dedication, the team hit an impressive 84 per cent in August.

Reaching this milestone has been a true team effort, with staff setting up additional clinics,

completing extra training, and personally contacting families to ensure attendance. Their hard work means more babies are now protected earlier in life marking a fantastic achievement for the service and a win for public health in Barnsley.
