As Ramadan draws to an end, we’ve received really positive feedback regarding the support the Trust has provided to our Muslim colleagues throughout the month.
A brand new Guide was produced by the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) team for all staff to access.
The prayer room in block 13 is available any time of day for prayers.
Nutritious dates were supplied, free of charge, to support Muslim colleagues with the breaking of the fast (generously funded by the South Yorkshire ICB People Experience Team).
Head of Organisational Development, Tim Spackman reflects on his short experience of fasting which was a really meaningful way to show allyship, express gratitude, and deepen his connection with others. He said:
“I fasted for a day as a way of learning more about Ramadan. I was hoping to be able to empathise with the experience a little and also show support to my Reciprocal Mentoring partner who was fasting. I learned more about the reasons for fasting such as spiritual reflection and helping others through charity and support. With the help of a Ramadan App, I learned how...
“a typical day went, with prayers reading the Quran and Iftar - the meal after sunset. I fasted from 05.08 at sunrise to 18.00 at sunset on a pretty warm day. I found not eating ok but not drinking very challenging! I was tired at the end of the day. However, I know my experience was very short compared to the 30 days our Muslim colleagues fast for and I am full of admiration for their commitment and community-mindedness!”
“The dates were a fabulous idea. It’s good to see promotion of different cultures and beliefs.”
“Thank you so much for the support during this blessed month of Ramadan. We hope it will continue.”
“We feel valued with such acts of generosity and feel very much part of the Barnsley Hospital and Community.”
“Thank you inclusion team for developing Ramadan guide and supplying dates. Also, for making hospital more inclusive for all.”

A recent quality improvement initiative has significantly reduced delayed or missed doses of Parkinson’s disease (PD) medication in the Emergency Department (ED) from 43% to 22%. Ensuring timely medication for PD patients is critical, as delays can lead to complications. The project highlighted the importance of involving key stakeholders, using a structured data-driven approach, and being flexible enough to abandon ineffective solutions. Rather than implementing impulsive fixes, the team focused on following a quality improvement (QI) framework to develop sustainable changes.
Key lessons learned included the need for an organised approach to data collection and continuous evaluation of processes. By refining medication administration workflows, the ED has improved both patient care and safety.
