Yvonne’s manager Mireille says of her: It truly won’t be the same without Yvonne, and while it’s sad to see her go, she absolutely deserves this recognition in Proud News. I can’t think of anyone more deserving.
Tobaccotreatmentsupportforhospital patients
Barnsley Hospital continues to help inpatients stop smoking, and the Healthy Lives Team (HLT) plays a vital role – offering support and information to enable lasting change beyond the hospital doors. From October to December last year, 880 people admitted to the hospital were documented as having smoked during the previous two weeks. Of these, 380 were prescribed Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) within 24 hours of admission.
Consultant in Public Health Dr Ceryl Harwood, said: “Providing NRT early in an admission helps prevent unpleasant nicotine withdrawal symptoms in our patients whilst in hospital. It aids their recovery, and for some will start a journey towards quitting long-term by ensuring community stop smoking support postdischarge.”
The team provides 12 weeks of free NRT and specialist support (with protected time away from work to attend). Want to Quit smoking? Contact: bdgtr.quitprogramme@nhs.net
Care certificates demonstrate the skills, knowledge and behaviours for compassionate, safe and high-quality care.

SmallChangeTuesday
The Quality Improvement (QI) team is championing small changes, or "pebbles," that can make a big difference, through its weekly Small Change Tuesday updates. Pebble improvement ideas are small ideas that teams implement, which, done widely create emerging improvements in the orgnisation. This week, Mohammed Loshash LubsirLatif, working in Ward 24, contributed this valuable pebble, which was showcased in the QI team’s gallery:
To prevent patients having delayed respect form discussions with consultants, resident doctors have started helping them fill the forms in prior to seeing a consultant, ensuring more patients have appropriate respect forms to prevent long delays when having these discussions out of hours.
The pebble gallery highlights submissions from staff across departments, offering inspiration for simple yet effective improvements. Staff are encouraged to share their own pebbles by emailing: barnsley.proudtoimprove@n hs.net or calling the QI team on 5643. Explore the gallery to see how small ideas spark meaningful transformation. Read more about this and other pebble projects on the Hub
