Barnsley Hospital is making waves after bagging the prestigious National Joint Registry (NJR) Quality Data Provider Award.
This accolade celebrates the hospital’s top-notch data on joint replacement surgeries, covering hips, knees, shoulders. The NJR ensures patients get the best care by monitoring procedures and giving feedback to surgeons and implant makers.
The Trust met and exceeded the NJR’s rigorous data quality audit, setting high standards of patient safety.
NJR Medical Director Tim Wilton said: “Top marks, Barnsley, your work drives better care, helping to set the standards for health services.”
A big thank you to Chelsea Bagnall, Rosie Sutton (Pictured) and Dr Patko.

Young people with learning difficulties and autism are gaining confidence and skills to prepare for employment through Barnsley Hospital’s Project Search internshipa partnership between Barnsley Hospital, Barnsley College and Barnsley Council. Lead Chaplain Connie Ashton said: “Having a Project Search intern has been invaluable. Their fresh perspective challenges our thinking, and adapting our communication creatively has strengthened our team. Watching interns grow in confidence, develop existing skills, and acquire new ones is both uplifting and rewarding, enriching our department with diversity and a sense of accomplishment.
Intern Sherona, said; "I feel proud and honoured to help others. Talking to people and making them feel less alone makes every day an achievement.
Beyond work, I am a passionate advocate for inclusion, engaging in Social Voice Groups to amplify others’ experiences.”
Sherona champions the internship as a gateway to confidence for people seeking employment.
The transition to digital documentation is transforming healthcare, and nurses play a vital role in shaping this future.
Joining the Shared Decision Council ensures your clinical expertise and day-to-day experiences directly influence the development of digital tools designed to enhance patient care and streamline workflows.
Our team works to create user-friendly systems that reduce duplication, align with evidence-based practices, and optimise efficiency. But we cannot achieve this alone.
Nurses are the end users of these tools, and your insights ensure they are practical, effective, and tailored to meet real-world needs. Through the council, your voice drives meaningful change.
For example, a staff nurse recently suggested transitioning the antiembolism stocking checklist into EPMA, reducing documentation redundancy. This idea is now being implemented, showcasing how frontline input shapes solutions.
Involvement in the council offers professional growth, collaboration opportunities, and the chance to influence decisions that impact your work.
You’ll enhance leadership skills, advocate for improvements, and contribute to elevating care standards across the organisation.
Digital transformation isn’t about replacing nurses; it’s about empowering you to focus more on what matters most: patient care.
By joining the council, you help ensure these advancements are made with nurses, not for nurses. Your voice matters make it heard.
The Alcohol Care Team (ACT) at Barnsley’s Healthy Lives Team is a national pioneer in blending prevention and treatment of alcohol-related health issues. Unique in their integration, the ACT addresses alcohol misuse through interventions and education. A typical day involves patient assessments, managing alcohol withdrawals, and coordinating community follow-ups.
Their proactive approach helps patients transition smoothly from hospital to home, often preventing relapses and ED visits.
Passionate about compassionate care, the ACT supports Barnsley residents, fostering trust and longterm recovery.
Despite challenges like limited prescribers, their dedication transforms lives, with many patients achieving lasting abstinence.
The festive spirit is set to sparkle at the hospital with this wonderfully festive musical event in our Hospital Chapel with the fantastic Barnburgh Village Singers.
Patients deemed fit can attend with nurse approval, wearing day clothes, and accompanied by staff.
This seasonal celebration will be held on Wednesday 18 December at 2pm with the Chaplaincy Team’s annual Christmas Carol Service in the Chapel, featuring the Barnburgh Village Singers.
