Safe,Secure, andAccredited

Barnsley Hospital is one of the first acute hospitals to achieve two important milestones in healthcare security, being awarded both the prestigious ‘Secured Environments’ accreditation and the BS7958 certification for CCTV management.

“This is a proud moment for us,” said Mike Lees, Head of Security Management.

“It is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of our security management and uniform officer teams. Their efforts help ensure Barnsley Hospital remains not just a place of clinical excellence and high-quality patient care, but a safe haven where our patients and staff members feel protected.”

MEET THE TEAM

Ward 31 - Gastroenterology

Our Gastroenterology unit cares for patients with acute conditions including: Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeds, Decompensated Liver Disease, Irritable Bowel Disease, and eating disorders to name a few. We provide 24-hour care for our patients on the ward. The nursing team work alongside the medical team to care for our patients, which includes basic care needs, medication administration, blood product transfusions,

enteral/parenteral feeding, and support in attending for procedures such as Gastroscopy/Colonoscopy and Ascitic Drains.

We’re proud of our achievements, and embrace change. Our recent QI project led to a betweenmeals snack trolley for patients needing extra nutrition, and this year, we were one of the first teams to move forward with paperless handover, helping improve sustainability and reduce costs for the Trust.

AlcoholAwarenessWeek

Alcohol Nurse Practitioner Deborah Hoole told us,

We provide specialist support for patients with alcohol use disorders, offering assessments, specialist advice on treatments, brief intervention advice, and referral to community services. Our goal is to improve patient care and support patients in managing or reducing their alcohol consumption.

This week we've been raising awareness to increase understanding of alcohol related harm, and promoting access to support and information. By talking with the public we can use this week to encourage open conversations about alcohol use and opportunity to reflect on their relationship with alcohol and how it can affect our health, families, work and communities.

Following a stint at Mid Yorks, Mick decided to take a role here in his home town of Barnsley to support clinical teams facing the challenge of violent behaviour from patients.

Mick will be delivering training including safer de-escalation, positive approaches to behaviour, re-directing, and guiding to clinical holding.

Initially this training will be for those teams which experience violent incidents most frequently.

Mick McGowan Non-Deliberate Violence & Aggression Reduction Facilitator

While hospitals and police stations may seem worlds apart, the reality is that violence and aggression can happen anywhere and unfortunately, frontline healthcare staff often bear the brunt of it. My role is to help reduce those risks, support staff after incidents, and ensure everyone feels safer at work.

Well done ward 30

Over the past six months, Ward 30 have successfully reduced the number of falls on our frailty ward. This is a tremendous achievement, and we couldn't be more proud of our colleagues for their hard work and commitment to patient safety. One of the key initiatives that contributed to this success was the removal of nurse stations in December 2024.

Ward 30 Team

By removing the nurse stations, we significantly improved visibility and were able to provide more attentive care to our patients, which played a crucial role in reducing falls.

This accomplishment is a testament to the incredible teamwork and innovative approach of our staff on Ward 30. Let's continue to build on this success and strive for even better outcomes in the future.

Johnny showed his compassion when involved in a situation with a transfer to Barnsley Hospice for a young lady that was receiving end of life care.

There was some issue with the end of life ambulance booked, and it seemed the transfer might not take place. Recognising the impact this could have on the patient and their family, Johnny dealt with the issue immediately in a calm, caring manner, sorted the

issue within 10 minutes and got the lady to the hospice within 20 minutes.

Johnny made sure this young lady’s wishes were respected and her family got the support they needed at a very difficult time for them.

Well done Johnny, truly proud to care!
