A group of partners are raising awareness about cancer screening programs to save lives.
Barnsley Council has collaborated with the South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, Barnsley CVS, Age UK Barnsley, and the Barnsley Breast Screening Programme.

Through the "Take Action to Live Longer" (TALL) project, Age UK Barnsley is creating a short film showing how early access to treatment, facilitated by NHS cancer screening programs, has helped Barnsley residents.
Special thanks were given to staff and our patient Susan for their contributions to the film’s personal stories and insights.

All week we have been in the canteen and on social media demonstrating the skills of Occupational Therapists (OT) and the impact we have on safe discharge, reducing length of stay and reducing readmissions. Staff, patients and others have taken part in activities such as spot the falls risk, an OT equipment quiz and had a go at using some of the assistive technology that supports patients to stay independent for longer.
One member of staff commented that they now understood the variety of services we offer and felt much more confident referring to the OT service.

Based on staff survey feedback we launched the Aspiring Talent program to include everyone from Band 2 upwards, complementing the existing Arising and Ascending programs that support other roles. One successful initiative under this expanded talent management framework was led by Claire Bowell and Charlotte Johnson, who responded to staff and service user feedback at the community diagnostic centre by pioneering a patient navigation project.
They collaborated widely across the Trust to gather insights in behaviour science, phone call response data and feedback questionnaires, ensuring a patientcentered approach. The project’s innovative solution a directional video (which incorporated nudge theory) on the hospital’s website, social media, letters and patient portals aimed to cut inquiries and late arrivals by 50 per cent, which the project exceeded. These successes led to smoother patient journeys, fewer calls, and on-time arrivals, highlighting the programs impact on patient satisfaction.
Charlotte said; Our goal was to create a seamless experience for patients navigating to the CDC. By working collaboratively across departments, we developed a simple, effective video that reduced confusion, highlighted key locations and public transport wa an sho tea thi car

Last week we held a fabulous Onam and Diwali joint celebration event in Colliers. It was an enjoyable afternoon full of colour, light, music and dance. We saw incredible engagement from staff and patients and it’s events like these that help demonstrate the Trust’s commitment to inclusivity and celebration of diversity.

A big thank you to all those who helped make the event impactful and memorable, with a very special thank you to our wonderful nurses who put on a fantastic dance performance for everyone too.
We look forward to next year’s celebration that is set to be even bigger and better!

Barnsley Hospital’s Research Nursing Team bagged a £250 Support Prize at the prestigious Nursing Times Awards in London. Their winning entry? A cheeky, Oasis-inspired album cover remake, a tribute to the resilience shown in their Covid-19 research efforts. Although they didn’t clinch the top spot in the Clinical Research Nursing category, their recognition highlights the team’s dedication during the pandemic. By creating a flexible, in-house research team, they smashed recruitment targets and kept local vaccine trials rolling. A true rock 'n' roll response to healthcare challenges.

Much work has been done in the past 12 months to look at how people in the Trust experience stress, and how the Trust should manage work-related stress. We now look at tackling work-related stress on three levels: Prevent, Promote, and Support.

The Barnsley Occupational Health team have been working with colleagues across the Trust to develop a practical toolkit to help individuals, line managers and senior leaders tackle work-related stress through these lenses.
We want our Trust to be a place where we focus on preventing work-related stress before it has an impact, but also where we provide support for colleagues should stress be experienced. We want a compassionate workplace,
where we care for the wellbeing of others in what is often a challenging work environment.
