PUBLICLY BRILLIANT

AheartfeltthankyoutoWard18

Shirley Stewart's family extended their deepest gratitude to the team who cared for her during her hospital stay.

Admitted from A&E to AMU and then to Ward 18, Shirley faced many challenges, including secondary lung cancer, pneumonia, and COVID-19.

Despite these difficulties, the care she received was exceptional.

From the paramedics to the nurses, doctors, HCAs, domestics, and catering team, everyone showed unwavering kindness.

Although Shirley passed away in January, her family is forever thankful for the love and care she received until her final breath.

"You are all amazing!" they shared, reflecting on the comfort and support they received throughout this difficult time.

BRILLIANT INDIVIDUAL

Monica'scalmsavestheday

A routine day at the hospital took a dramatic turn when a newborn baby was brought into reception, not breathing.

Monica, with her calm demeanour and experience in healthcare, immediately jumped into action. She gently rubbed the baby’s chest, and to everyone's relief, the baby started breathing again just as the doctors arrived.

Monica's quick thinking and compassion transformed a terrifying situation into a joyous outcome.

Her incredible actions earned her a well-deserved Individually Brilliant Award, recognising her dedication and poise under pressure.

ShortlistedforPrestigiousNationalAward

Our top-notch estates team is celebrating after being shortlisted for the prestigious IHEEM Project of the Year Award for their incredible work on the hospital’s revamped Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The project saw the ICU go from a cramped, seven-bed unit to a cutting-edge, spacious facility with six beds and eight extra escalation bays, perfect for potential future pandemics. The team pulled off the massive transformation, a huge logistical challenge, by squeezing a whole building site through a tiny 2x2m door. Now patients and staff enjoy better spaces, lighting, and privacy. Well done team, and fingers crossed for the big win!

HSJshortlist!

A nurse-led project which has helped speed up discharge for children with minor head injuries has been shortlisted for an HSJ Patient Safety Award. This quality improvement project enables children's emergency nurses, to safely discharge patients aged 2 to 16 with minor head injuries autonomously. This improves the patient experience and frees up time for colleagues to attend to more severely ill children, enhancing their care too.

Lucy and team

Lead Nurse for EDCAU, Lucy Schofield said:

I am so proud we’ve been shortlisted for this 2024 HSJ patient safety award. It is amazing to have this recognition for the hard work and dedication that our team have towards providing exceptional nursing care. To win the award would be aspirational and truly show that we can achieve great things by working collaboratively. We hope to inspire others to do the same and build upon what we have learnt from this quality improvement project.

CAVELL STAR

AngelaHonouredforExtraordinaryCare

A nurse, described as “exceptionally special and compassionate,” has bagged the Cavell Star Award in a shock twist this week after going above and beyond in helping a family through the devastating loss of their daughter. Sophia Jane Clarke, who heroically defied medical expectations by living 10 years longer than predicted, passed away on June 8 just one month shy of her 13th birthday.

Born with a range of bewilderingly complex needs,

Sophia spent her life laughing, smiling, and confusing medical experts everywhere. Her dad, Paul said: “She was always smiling and always laughing. She had a brain disorder, chest infections all the time - she couldn’t walk, sleep or eat. She was nonverbal and required 24-hour care. But she was still such a happy child.”

Angela’s dedication in this surreal situation was recognized with this worthy award.

Cavell Star Awards are given to nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare assistants who shine bright and show exceptional care.
