Volunteers play a massive part in helping BIADS help people in Barnsley with dementia.

Then the BIADS Activity Volunteer at their day centre could just be up your street! If you have a few hours to spare, and you want to make new connections, they would love to hear from you

They work alongside partners who are skilled in analysing impact and effectiveness and much of their work has an action research component. They are a small project but by working this way they can have greater impact, sharing what they learn, to support others to be more effective and confident in their own interventions

After several years as an independent project within the Sheffield Methodist District, they are now a registered charity in their own right, and are looking for Trustees who will join the current Board in guiding them through this new chapter In common with many organisations, they faced challenges in 2020 Most of their work focusses on face to face conversations within communities so their activities had to be suspended in March 2020. -

Trustee

You will be joining Who is Your Neighbour? at a critical time in their history They were set up in 2010 to undermine the influence of the Far Right in communities of people who are not extremists but are troubled and divided by these ideas.

Who Is Your Neighbour? works with people to explore difficult issues about race, culture, identity and migration, helping communities become more resilient in dealing with difference.

Who is Your Neighbour? SEPTEMBER 2022

V O L U N T E E R

O P P O R T U N I T I E S

Young people are under represented in the organisation, so they would encourage applications from this group They are also keen to attract people from a range of ethnic minority/faith backgrounds They would very much like more people from Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley

They are looking for Trustees to strengthen their dedicated Board They are looking for people who can bring experience of media/publicity/journalism, an academic perspective especially of evaluation/impact measurement and income generation in the broadest sense. Knowledge of the Far Right would be beneficial They also need an accountant to act as a Treasurer

They have done this in two ways, holding safe space conversations about difficult things where people are able to be honest and where there is also space for reflection and challenge, and putting forward ‘alternative narratives’ , stories about difficult issues that don’t scapegoat or target particular groups but which do recognise that the reality can be complicated

Their finances were relatively secure at that time, but the funding landscape changed dramatically as funders closed their doors or changed their priorities to direct Covid response work They responded by engaging a freelance fundraiser and adapting a funding strategy to spread the risk It means their finances will be an ongoing concern, but hopefully one they can manage in the short and medium term The virus has been a catalyst for development they knew they needed to make, so they have increased their online training offer and appointed a Communications Worker to establish their digital identity and infrastructure They hope that both these steps will enable them to enhance their national profile and explore other ways of addressing the Far Right threat in the online space

Economic hardship in the aftermath of the pandemic, which reinforced inequalities, and now hostilities escalating in Ukraine, introducing sanctions that will increase financial pressures here, will exacerbate scapegoating The proliferation of divisive narratives underscores the need for a more nuanced approach that focusses on attitude change and critical thinking Their work is more needed than ever They work to help communities live more successfully with difference and be more resilient in dealing with divisions created by those who see difference as a threat They aim to demonstrate inclusion and diversity both in their recruitment of Trustees, appointment of staff and facilitators, and in the work they undertake in communities They recognise that the way they are financed can imply an acceptance of the values and policies of funders, and that this may mean taking tough decisions about where they draw our funding from.
