The Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team need a new Fundraising Officer - have you got the experience and enthusiasm to fill this crucial role within their team?

Although they are a front-line emergency service, they receive no government funding for their life-saving work As a charity, they have to raise all funds themselves to ensure they can be there for people in their hour of need - 24/7, 365 days a year.

However, they need your help to fill a crucial role to help the team save lives and provide their emergency service

They are looking for a volunteer with experience in fundraising to help spread the word about the cause, and help raise the funds required to run the service. Without money in the bank, those emergency calls could go unanswered

They are missing a crucial member of the team though. It costs approximately £30k a year for the team just to ‘stand still’, and that doesn’t take into account any new large costs to help evolve in the future, such as a replacing a response vehicle, developing HQ initiatives and many more ideas they have

Search and rescue is always evolving and they need the dynamic approach of an experienced volunteer to help Woodhead MRT grow and evolve with the times

If this sounds like a challenge you’d relish - and you have a proven track record of fundraising in the charity sector – they would love to hear from you

Independent Monitoring Board Volunteers

Do you want to gain new skills in a setting you haven’t considered before?

If this sounds like you, you may be interested in a voluntary role which provides insight into a world that few people see, where you’ll be able to use, and add to, your skills and experience.

You could join a team of ordinary people doing an extraordinary role: independently monitoring prisons and places of immigration detention across the country

They are looking for people who share their values and commitment and are keen to give back to their community. A good listener, you will always act with integrity, be committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, be able to analyse observed events and behaviour, make decisions and apply common sense. You will also need to work within a team, be a good communicator and have some basic computer skills

You will have unrestricted access to the prison, talk to prisoners in confidence, monitor day-to-day activity and report back on whether people are being treated fairly and humanely and being given the support they need to turn their lives around.

They are looking for people with a non-judgemental and open-minded approach, who can commit to making 2-3 visits a month, including a monthly Board meeting

Although this is an unpaid role, they pay travel and subsistence expenses, childcare or carer costs and, in certain circumstances, contributions towards loss of earnings

As one member says: “It could be the most rewarding thing you have ever done, and you can make a real difference to prison life I was unemployed when I started volunteering and didn’t know how I would be able to re-enter the workplace after being out of work for so long The experience and confidence I gained on the Board enabled me to get paid employment, which I now do alongside my volunteer role”

If you are interested in being the eyes on the inside, a voice on the outside, then book onto their next virtual open evening to find out more about the role and hear from some of our existing volunteers from both the prison and immigration detention estates

Please share this with your family and friends, particularly anyone vulnerable you may know, as this will affect anyone in the UK with a compatible mobile phone.

On Sunday 23 April 2023 the Government will be trailing an Emergency Alert system, that will alert all mobile phones in the UK if there is a risk of a serious emergency You may have seen other countries have these, particularly in America, when they may experience extreme weather or other emergencies

It is a way of communicating directly with the public to try and keep people safe

On Sunday 23 April the alert you recieve will say: This is a test of Emergency Alerts, a new UK government service that will warn you if there’s a life-threatening emergency nearby. In an actual emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe.

Visit gov.uk/alerts for more information. This is a test. You do not need to take any action.

How emergency alerts work

In an emergency, mobile phone masts in the surrounding area will broadcast an alert. Every compatible mobile phone or tablet in range of a mast will receive the alert

Emergency alerts work on all 4G and 5G phone networks in the UK

Your mobile phone or tablet does not have to be connected to mobile data or wifi to get alerts

Emergency alerts are free. You do not need to sign up for them or download an app.

Reasons you will not get an alert

You will not receive alerts if your device is:

Compatible mobile phones and other devices

Make sure your device has all the latest software updates. Emergency alerts work on:

turned off or in airplane mode connected to a 2G or 3G network wifi only not compatible iPhones running iOS 145 or later Android phones and tablets running Android 11 or later

If you have an earlier version of Android, you may still be able to receive alerts To check, search your device settings for ‘emergency alerts’.

Barnsley set to benefit from the expansion of Targeted Lung Health Checks

Those most at risk of lung cancer to be offered NHS screening programme

From March 2023, people in Barnsley aged 55 to 74 who smoke or used to smoke and are registered with a Barnsley GP will be invited by letter for a free NHS Lung Health Check

The Targeted Lung Health Check programme will make its way to different neighbourhoods across the borough to identify any lung problems early, enabling earlier cancer diagnoses, and improving lung cancer survival rates.

Dr Sahar Awadallah, Barnsley Cancer Lead, said: “Local GPs, including me, are urging those invited to utilise this free screening service, as problems could start before a person notices anything of concern.

“Lung cancer often has no or few symptoms until a much later stage, so, if it is caught earlier, treatment could be more successful. Screening saves lives.”

A Targeted Lung Health Check is a two-stage process in which lung health is assessed A quick, initial phone call will take place to make sure the person is eligible for the programme, and then a respiratory nurse will conduct an assessment with the person over the phone

If identified as someone with a higher chance of developing lung cancer, they will be invited to have a scan that will take a detailed image of their chest and, if a problem is found, they will be referred for treatment.

Not everyone will need a scan, but those that do will be invited to a mobile scanning unit in a convenient location in their local community The mobile scanning units will be visiting the Dearne from March and will move to different sites across Barnsley until March 2024.

The programme is already operating in Rotherham and Doncaster. In Doncaster, nearly 18,000 Lung Health Checks and close to 10,000 initial low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans have been completed As a result, 193 cancers have been confirmed, 148 of which were lung cancers An impressive 75% were caught at an early stage with 74% of these patients suitable for curative treatment

Dr Jason Page, Clinical Director South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Lung Health Checks, said: “We are thrilled to be able to expand Targeted Lung Health Checks into Barnsley

“The success of the programme in Doncaster has undoubtedly saved lives, and now we are able to start the work in Barnsley with the intention of saving more

“We want to stress the importance of keeping your appointment when you are invited If you have received an invite, it is due to your increased risk of developing lung cancer or having other lung conditions, and this is an opportunity to get an early diagnosis and have a much better chance of survival”
