Our mission is to inspire a life-long love of music in an atmosphere of enjoyment and mutual respect, engaging all students in creative, active and purposeful learning.
We provide an innovative continuum of teaching and learning from Pre-K - 12, through an expansive curricular and co-curricular program, reflecting the diversity of music in the 21st century.
We acknowledge the Dharug, Darkinjung, Wonnarua and Yolŋu peoples who are the traditional custodians of the land on which Barker College, Darkinjung Barker, Ngarralingayil Barker and Dhupuma Barker stand. We pay respect to the Elders past, present and emerging of the Dharug, Darkinjung, Wonnarua and Yolŋu nations and extend that respect to other Indigenous people within the Barker College community.
Introduction
The Junior School Music Concert is a showcase of the School’s outstanding music program, which begins with the opportunity for each student in Years 2 - 3 to learn an instrument and develop their skills as part of a smaller ensemble group in the classroom instrumental program.
In Year 4 students develop skills in keyboard, ukulele, stomp and tuned percussion. In Years 5 and 6 students begin composition as well as developing skills in djembe drumming, ukulele and guitar.
As part of the curriculum program across all year groups from Pre-Kindergarten, students begin to develop their understanding of Music concepts through a variety of experiences in a sequential and developmental program. They also participate in massed choir groups highlighting the value of skills in this particular area. They explore music through tuned and untuned percussion, games, singing and rhythm, beat, pitch and timbre activities.
Additionally, Junior School students in Years 5 and 6 have the opportunity to participate in a cocurricular auditioned choir, as well as band and orchestra groups developing their collaboration and teamwork skills as well as their listening and performance skills.
The ability to play a musical instrument should not be underestimated and the aim of the program is to inspire students and develop a passion for music that will hopefully last throughout their lifetime. It is an opportunity that I wish I had when I was at school.
The students are supported in their endeavours by a talented and committed team of class and peripatetic instrumental teachers. I would like to thank the Music Department for their work in ensuring a wonderful music program. The future of Barker music is promising given the great foundation established in the Junior School.
I look forward to what should be another wonderful night of entertainment showcasing the extraordinary talent of the Junior School musicians.
Martin Lubrano Head of Junior School
Welcome to this evening’s Junior School Ensembles Music Concert.
At Barker, music is more than an extracurricular activity, it is an important part of the ‘red thread’ woven through the fabric of school life. With over half of our students actively engaged in music-making across the school, the value of music clearly shapes and enriches our culture.
We are proud to say that we home-grow our musicians through our classroom instrumental program, offering every child the opportunity to begin their musical journey from the early years of Junior School. From those first notes in the classroom to performances on the Junior School stage, our students grow into confident performers. This journey is guided
and sustained by the dedication of our exceptional music teachers and ensemble directors. Many of the young musicians you hear tonight will continue their involvement in music throughout their time at Barker, right through to Year 12.
Tonight, you will hear everything from timeless classical works to contemporary rock and more, and our concert will feature a wide range of instruments, musical styles, and levels of experience. Remember, every musician’s journey begins somewhere, and those early steps are both meaningful and worthy of support. So sit back, relax, and applaud loudly as our students share their joy for music with you.
