INTERNSHIP REPORT
This summer I had the opportunity to intern under Loryn Cook with Eleva West. It was such an amazing learning experience. I was really able to relate to how Loryn works and teaches, which was a huge benefit in the entire process and definitely helped me get the most out of my time. My biggest takeaways were improving my photography and videography, improving my technical skills, creating better organization, and the planning and communication part of the process. I also felt as though I gained a ton of insight from my mentor Ms. Vehige.
While most of my internship was remote, the time, I was able to spend in person learning from Loryn was greatly used to improve my photography and videography skills. We were able to go to several different stallion stations and take pictures of the mares and foals. This time was extremely helpful for me to have Loryn there to ask questions and consult with her about creative ideas. It also gave me an opportunity to get more experience without a ton of pressure. I have struggled feeling confident in my videography and Loryn was able to give me some tips and tricks on how to hold my camera better to prevent shaking and movement in the videos. We also talked about using the stabling feature in Lightroom and Cap Cut, which have been really helpful in improving my videography skills.
Next, I feel like constantly using Lightroom, Cap Cut, and Captions to create reels and social media posts have been really helpful in growing my confidence in my technical skills and improving my social media content. Loryn was able to screen record and talk me through any questions that I had and this was so helpful to have to opportunity to explore being more creative in a more concise amount of time. Working with specific brands in the equine industry also helped me being able to learn brand awareness and voice to a new level. It was also so fun getting to see Loryn consulte a few different clints. This was probably one of my favorite parts, because she has to take time and get to know the client as much more than just a client. She has to understand their passions and mission before she can do her job to an effective level. It was really cool getting to see her build that connection and be able to help people bring their dreams to a reality.
We were also able to spend some time talking about my end goals and how I ideally want to use this degree My dream is to have my own business and market for myself and my business. It was so helpful and fun to sit down and make a tangible plan of action for making my dreams a reality. We talked about how I would should go about growing my following and being able to create a community of like-minded people. Thus, some successes that I have had in my internship include getting better at noticing small details like spacing. Even though I still want to improve, I have seen a lot of progress in my work.
I feel as though the work that I have done has been very successful. I have gotten a lot of feedback on my work; however, it has all been to just grow and better my work All the feedback that I have received has been small changes that improve the quality of my work. I have also been able to go back through and edit all my work as I go which I think had really helped it make a lasting impact on my design skills.
My weaknesses where definitely staying organized on my computer and pay super close attention to detail. Often, it feels really overwhelming trying to keep track of all the different pictures, videos, and files in general I get so focused on getting started and getting things done that I don’t take the time to initially organize everything on my computer in a way that is easy and accessible for later. I really need to get better at filing and naming everything to save me time later on in the creative process
The next thing I need to get better at is paying closer attention to detail in my design work Specifically, I need to make sure all spacing is consistent from slide to slide or whatever content I am working on. I also struggle with keeping a consistent brand voice while still being creative and innovative with the work that I am producing. I need to get better at staying consistent but also being creative in my work with other brands It is easy to do this for myself but often hard to do this for other people’s businesses.
Truthfully, I was worried about getting enough hours in each week, especially with my internship being mostly remote and me making my own schedule from my parents’ house. My parents live on a ranch, and there is always something to do outside. I am never as productive at their house as I am at my house in Fayetteville because of this So, I was worried about being disciplined enough to put my internship first over the things that I could be helping with on the ranch. However, this really has not been a problem and has ended up being one of my strengths. I have gotten all my hours and work done each week, and I just need to keep this up throughout the rest of the summer. I have done well changing my work environment and keeping it fun and interesting. I also really enjoy listening to music or podcasts while I design, which helps keep it fun and makes me want to work more
I also feel that it has been so good to get to work in the industry I think I want to work in the future without actually working in the industry yet. There are some things about working remotely on my computer that I really like and other things that I don’t like as much, but it has been such a good experience for testing the waters and finding out what I like and don’t like. All in all, I do like working remotely. I like the freedom it gives me and being able to be so involved in the ranch and working with my horses at the same time. Not everyone has that privilege, and I am really lucky and excited to keep doing what I love while I am working. I also find myself traveling a lot, so it is super nice to be able to do both!
I also feel like getting to meet and work with people in the industry that I could potentially work for or with in the future is one of the biggest benefits and successes of this internship. I have met many people whose connections and mentorship I value for my life and career. I would say that working from home and knowing that I can do both has been one of my biggest successes from working this summer, and I think that it will only get better throughout the winter months On the other hand, the biggest weakness for me was saying yes to too many things this summer and at times feeling very overwhelmed with the amount of work and time I didn’t have. In conclusion, my advice to any intern starting out would be during this time it is okay to say no to certain things so you can focus and grow in this intended area easier
