ife in Westfield is good for some, not quite so much for others. With many activities and groups to join or contribute to, or even saying “hello” as you pass on the pavement, Westfield maintains its place as a village that many people appreciate. Then there is the countryside with walks, including the 1066 route, and wildlife to enjoy. However, there are the niggles – sometimes without thinking of an alternative view. Progress and modern life changes the world around us but when there are problems it seems to be someone else’s job when it could so easily be sorted at home.

There have been so many that cutting down the application to the maximum 3000 characters allowed, was quite a task. The application was sent off last July, and the Parish Council was delighted to hear that Joan's service has been recognised. She will receive her award at a presentation by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Peter Field, at a presentation at Brighton Pavilion on 6th October this year. (Photos: front page)

and businesses, in particular, have not suffered too much. It has been very trying with lack of phones/internet and holidays attempting to get copy for this newsletter but hope I have managed to provide items of interest for you.

August already, it will soon be Christmas and already the season is mentioned within these pages. Thank you to those dear readers who mention how much they enjoy this newsletter; many comment on the fact that they read it from cover to cover. Some people also have good memories when it comes to advertisers, remembering seeing a particular trade and not finding it in their current copy. You will notice an increase in the number of people who find this publication useful for their businesses, please mention where you found their details when you contact them.

IN REMEMBRANCE Kindly submitted to the WCA newsletter by Simon Knight with Ruth Carter

ALBERT VICTOR HARTHILL Private –TF/202256 – 1/7th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, 167th Brigade, 56th (London) Division Born 1889 in Brighton the son of William Swinfield (coachman) and Augusta Jane Harthill. The 1891 census records that Albert, then aged 1 year, was living with his parents and four elder siblings at 9, Hamilton Road, Preston, Brighton. The 1901 census finds Albert, then aged 12 years, living with his parents and two brothers; William and Frank at Yew Tree Lodge, Westfield.

William senior was then employed as a coachman and his eldest son William as a gardener for Alfred Sayer of Yew Tree House, Westfield. The 1911 census finds Albert, then aged 20 years, living with his parents and two brothers at Yew Tree House Stables. Albert was then employed as a groom for the Sayer family. By 1916 Albert had left home finding employment as a groom at Broadford Stables, Chobham, Surrey. His family was now living at Plum Tree Cottage, Westfield.

In January 1916 conscription for single men was introduced and it was not long before Albert was required to attend his nearest recruiting office. On 10th February he attested at Woking and was immediately posted to the Army Reserve. He then stood 5 feet 3 inches tall with brown hair, hazel eyes and a fresh complexion and was described as being of good physical development.

Albert returned home where he awaited mobilization. This came a month later on 14th March at which time he was posted to the 4/7th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment (service number 6273). The 4/7th Battalion later retitled the 7th (Reserve) Battalion was a Territorial Force Battalion formed in 1915 to supply reserves for the 1st and 2nd line territorial battalions of the Middlesex Regiment then at the front. By this date the formerly locally raised territorial battalions of the county regiments, whose ranks were almost entirely made up of part time soldiers and local war time recruits, were now being reinforced by conscripted men who had little or no choice as to which unit they joined. In April whilst stationed at Purfleet Albert contracted influenza and was hospitalized for six days.

Albert left for France on 30th November 1916 embarking at Folkestone for Boulogne. On arrival he was posted to the 1/7th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. On 11th December he joined the 56th Divisional Training Battalion. Whilst undergoing further training in France he was admitted, on 16th February 1917, to the 2/1st Field Ambulance. His service papers do not give the reason.

However, as he was not transferred to a hospital or casualty clearing station it is likely that his illness or injury was light. On 26th February he joined his battalion at the front. It was at this time that the territorial units underwent some reorganization and Albert was allocated his new six figure service number 202256. On 3rd May the 56th Division as part of the British Third Army attacked the German lines east of Arras later known as the ‘The Third Battle of the Scarpe’. The leading battalions of the 167th Brigade, the 1/7th Middlesex and the 1st London Regiment left their assembly trenches at zero hour 3.45am. The Divisional history describes the opening moments of the attack ‘in the darkness, illuminated by wavering star-shells fired by a startled enemy, and with the crashing of the barrage, the men of the 56th Division advanced…’. However, ‘as soon as the first waves topped the crest they were met by withering machine-gun and rifle fire’. Due to the intense darkness and unfamiliar ground it was not long before the attack was lost in confusion. It was not until daybreak that any idea of what had or had not been achieved could be ascertained.

Certain units had made their objectives, but it was clear that neither the 1st London nor the 1/7th Middlesex had ever held their objective of ‘Tool Trench’. (continued at the foot of page 7) 5

STEPHEN BLACKMAN Gunner – 212281 –‘D’ (Howitzer) Battery, 17th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, 29th Division

Born 1881 in Westfield the son of James (labourer) and Mercy Blackman of Yew Tree Cottage, Westfield. The 1891 census finds Stephen, then aged 10 years, living with his parents, three younger siblings Philadelphia, Frederick and Spencer and his uncle Samuel Catt. The 1901 census records that Stephen, then aged 20 years, was living with his widowed mother, siblings Fred, Spencer and Sarah and uncle Samuel. Stephen was at this time locally employed as a butcher slaughter man. In late 1910 Stephen married Edith Foster and set up home with her in two rooms at Yew Tree Cottage, whilst his mother, uncle and niece Emily Glazier lived in the remaining four rooms. The census of the following year reveals that Stephen was either regretting married life or that he had a very wicked sense of humour, as under ‘particulars as to marriage’ he had written wish I wasn’t. He had by this date left the butchery trade and was now working as a general labourer.

It is not known whether Stephen volunteered or was conscripted, but he did not embark for France until after the beginning of 1916. He joined the 17th Brigade, RFA at the front and was posted to their Howitzer Battery equipped of six 4.5” Quick Firing Howitzers, the other three batteries were equipped with six 18 pounders each.

Stephen died on 17th April 1918 at the 36th Casualty Clearing Station of wounds received during the fighting in and around the valley of the River Lys later known as the Battle of the Lys 7th – 29th April 1918 – part of the German Spring Offensive known as ‘Operation Georgette’. The British Army on the Western Front had been sustaining very heavy losses since 21st March 1918 as the Germans, bolstered by 500,000 men transferred from the Russian Front, attempted to break the allies and push the British back to the Channel ports. The German Spring Offensive or ‘Kaiserschlacht’ eventually ran out of steam in late April only a few miles from Paris. Stephen was one of many thousands of British troops involved in preventing the Germans from breaking through and one of 110,000 allied casualties to this one battle. Stephen is buried in Haringhe (Bandaghem) Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Harthill: The history states, however, that ‘a few gallant parties did undoubtedly overrun Tool, and, crossing a sunken road known as Stirrup Lane reached, Lanyard Trench’ only a short distance from the London Rifle Brigade of the 169th Brigade. These gallant men held on to their advanced shell holes until the evening, but being in insufficient numbers they were forced to surrender.

Following the battle Albert was reported missing and it was not until 21st January 1918 that he was accepted as having died on or about 3rd May 1917. His body was never identified and therefore he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

Westfield Friendship Club

y popular demand the Friendship Club once again visited Lathe Barn Farm in Burmarsh for a lovely strawberry tea enjoyed by all. Our meetings are on alternate Mondays from 2.0 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. in the Parish Hall where members enjoy games of whist and bingo over a cup of tea and biscuits. The subscription is £5 per year with l0p. each meeting towards the cost of the refreshments.

Dates to the end of this year are: 14, 28 September, 12, 26 October, 9, 23 November finishing with the Christmas tea on 7 December.

irst I would like to explain the eye catching heading to this short piece it’s simply to address the ‘elephant in the room’ and general misconception regarding the opening and integrity of my new Hydroponic Shop in Westfield.

The reason for addressing this issue first is to get it out of the way and move onto the more positive applications of the method of Hydroponic growing.

For those that do not know Hydroponics is simply a method of cultivating plants in a nutrient solution rather than soil and the earliest published reviews on this growing method were printed in 1627 so it has been around for a very long time.

But Yes, what I sell can be used for the illegal cultivation of Cannabis BUT the same can be said of virtually every growing product sold by every Garden centre and DIY store nationwide. The reason why Hydroponics is primarily used for illegal growing is simply because it works so well. Used correctly it simply produces larger crops with larger yields in a much shorter time but this can be applied to virtually any plant grown using Hydroponics.

So these are the more future thinking and positive aspects of Hydroponics that the ethos of the shop is based on, most people are blissfully unaware that the vast majority of vegetables and flowers purchased in shops and supermarkets have been either propagated or grown using some sort of Hydroponic System.

NASA have been working on hydroponic grow systems for many years for their Space Shuttles and Space Stations and are considered essential for the food production needed for deep space exploration and new planet cultivation, but back on Earth whether we want to face the facts or not the Planet is experiencing a population explosion that means in the not too distant future our need for food will outstrip our ability to produce naturally so the development of Hydroponic systems to produce larger and more crops quicker will become a necessity.

Other applications for our grow systems are providing inner city people without gardens and people with disabilities the chance to grow indoors and become more self-sufficient plus because of the quick growth there are some excellent education programs to show children how plants grow in much shorter time so they can see a full grow cycle of a plant in just 12 weeks rather than months.

So please before you judge, me and my shop take the time to come in and see what I can offer. I also stock many different types of soil, pots and fertilizer so may also be able to help you get the most out of what you are growing now.

Richard’s Ramblings

NEW RECRUITS. (Part 1)

One October day in the mid 1970’s, having been accepted by Sussex Police, we brand new recruits were sent to the regional training centre at Grosvenor Hall, Kennington, Ashford, arriving one Sunday evening. We were shown to our rooms, grandiosely referred to as halls of residence. Each room contained four male recruits. I shared mine with a chap from Guernsey * another from Surrey and a lad from Kent. Why Channel Islanders were trained on the mainland was a mystery; they have totally different laws and legal system to us.

We were provided with a meal consisting of meat pie, mashed potato and peas. I was reminded of a school dinner of indifferent quality.

Once dinner was over, we unpacked our uniforms and polished our boots again. A prominently displayed timetable showed that there would be a parade and inspection first thing after breakfast in the morning.

After an early breakfast, full English, toast, tea, coffee, fruit juice, cereal, all of a much higher quality than last nights fare, the promised drill session arrived. The parade square was the property of Sgt Pond, an ex Royal Marine. What a character. Immaculate in his uniform, a brilliant sense of humour, the ability to make recruits laugh and cry at the same time but most of all everyone wanted to please him, such was his personality.

These drill sessions were no problem for ex servicemen (we even had an ex Regimental Sergeant Major) but some of the younger people had great trouble telling left from right.

Drill over it was time for the first lesson of the day. It consisted of a sergeant showing us badges of rank and getting us to learn them off by heart ! We were introduced to the different classifications of law, and told that we would be expected to learn large legal chunks word perfect. We would be tested each Friday. We would learn First aid, self defence, to swim and achieve a Royal Life Saving Society qualification. There would be Physical Training and we would be closely monitored to see if we socialised. To this end there was a bar, darts board, billiards table and table tennis. Football would also be played, all in our own time, of course.

The food was excellent and we never went hungry. Most evenings were spent polishing and pressing and learning legal definitions. Some I can still remember, even though they are now well out of date. Failure to achieve the required standard in anything would result in the award of a “9 o’clock parade.” The defaulter was obliged to report to the senior officer on duty dressed in his or her best at 9pm. This was guaranteed to ruin the evening.

First Aid consisted of Sgt Pond and an anatomical skeleton. Prior to one lesson, some joker put the skeleton’s hands on it’s hips and a smouldering cigarette between it’s jaws. Sgt Pond showed us many films made by the Royal Navy on the subjects of resuscitation in the bowels of a battleship, cuts, choking, poisoning and broken bones, all suffered by unfortunate sailors.

Physical Training was the province of Sgt Alf Webb. Built like a human block of flats, Alf made us run, jump, skip, bounce, fall and climb ropes. At the start of each P.T. lesson Sgt Webb would announce his arrival with a very loud “Top of the wall bars, GO”. The last to reach the top would be allowed to do a dozen push ups, sometimes two dozen. Alf was also responsible for swimming and self defence. During one such lesson, a karate expert tried to show off and counter one of Sgt Webb’s demonstration restraints. This was an unwise move because Sgt Webb had the strength of half a dozen men, and after twisting the karate kid and tying him in a knot he threw him back to us with the words: “Ladies and Gents, don’t ever try that yourselves. Look what it did to him”.

he summer term was very busy at Playgroup.

In May it was a beautiful sunny day for our outing to Knockhatch during which time we all met up for lunch and enjoyed our picnic together.

June’s Sports Day and BBQ went well when the children enjoyed the races and were very proud to receive a certificate and medal. ‘Giant Snails’ came to stay for a week and the children helped to look after them, a guinea pig came for the day too. Girls and boys starting Westfield School this September loved their visits to the reception class and also spending time with their new teachers. They also had a fantastic time at our Leaver’s Party at the end of term, especially the bouncy castle. I wish the children and their families all the best for the future, they will be missed.

During July our visitors included a duckling who had an adopted chicken for its mummy plus another chicken with her chicks; Police Officer Sharon gave a ‘Staying Safe’ talk and we were able to try on different police hats and explore the police jeep; and a Paramedic and his Ambulance which the children really enjoyed, you probably heard the sirens.

I say a big thank you to my staff and the committee for all the hard work that is put into our Playgroup.

Westfield – Public Access Defibrillator (PAD).

In the UK approximately 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest outside hospital and are treated by emergency medical services every year. A patient's chance of survival decreases by around 10% per minute following a Cardiac Arrest. As such, it is vital that emergency medical treatment begins as soon as possible. If chest compressions and defibrillation is delivered promptly, survival rates as high as 75% can be achieved. The UK Resuscitation Council suggests an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) should be available wherever medical treatment is more than 5 minutes away.

Westfield’s PAD has been installed on the external wall of Westfield Londis near to the pedestrian crossing and is available 24/7. We would not have been able to place this PAD without the full support of Park Lane Group who agreed for the unit to be fitted and kindly fixed the wall unit for no charge; they were very keen to be involved as they could see how beneficial this was for the community.

When a Cardiac Arrest 999 call is received in our control room the operator will be aware of the nearest PAD site. If the PAD is close enough to the location of the patient they will ask someone to go to the PAD box and return to the patient with the defibrillator. Once back at the patient the relative / bystander will be given instructions over the phone detailing how to turn on the machine and apply the defibrillator pads to the patient.

Now installed, the PAD will fall under the remit of the 1066 Country Community First Responder (CFR) team who will manage periodic checks on the unit to ensure it For everyone’s hair visit remains in working order. CFR’s are Celia, Helen, Molly, volunteer members of the community who Rachelle and Jeremy at are trained to respond to emergency calls in conjunction with the South East Coast Ambulance Service. e closed the doors on the summer term on Wednesday 22 July; an era comes to an end as we bid farewell to our Head Teacher of 14 years, Keith Cheetham, and our Deputy Head Teacher of 13 years, Kevin Tomasetti - not forgetting our Year 6 class and Hayley Page, our reception class teacher, who also packed up their bags and cast off for new shores. In those final few days of term, we were all able to celebrate the times we have shared over the years.

The rain held off for our whole school Street Party, organised by our PTA, where everyone enjoyed lunch together, followed by a special ‘songs for Keith’ assembly. This afternoon finished with neighbours, parents and former pupils calling in for tea and cake to chat and share their memories. We would like to thank everyone who came along and made this such a special occasion.

On Tuesday 21 July, our pupils and staff hosted a Leavers Assembly for Keith and Kevin with many gifts exchanged with our hopes and wishes for their successful futures bestowed.

Our last day of term was dedicated to our Year 6 leavers and Hayley, what an emotional day it was. Their efforts and achievements this year must be congratulated and our best wishes go with all of them as they branch out and grow.

Although a moving end to our school year, we cannot forget all the other highlights that have made up our summer term. Healthy School Week and Sports Day were dry, warm and successful.

Many activities were on offer during this week including archery, cooking, fencing, smoothie making and kickboxing when everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.

Our school trips have embraced the great outdoors taking us to Wilderness Wood and The Rare Breed Centre plus a jaunt to our local church for art. We have also hosted picnics on the school field for our reception class children and their parents, pond dipping and mosaic making for our children in Years 2 and 3.

Our Years 5 and 6 pupils rounded off our year with their magnificent performance of ‘The Rocky Monster Show’. Broadway came to Westfield for two evening performances where the children pulled out all the stops with their acting, singing and production skills to give us evenings never to forget.

As we now enjoy the summer holidays, we look forward to a new chapter for Westfield School from September with a new Head Teacher, Matthew Jarvis. Doors open to pupils on Thursday 3rd September.

The End of an Era in Westfield Marjorie Hill passed away at home on 16 July aged 90 with family and carers present. With her husband, Geoffrey, whom she met whilst serving in the WRNS, they made their home in Westfield in 1963 after service overseas in East Africa. Widowed 16 years ago, she was the much loved mother of Robert, Virginia and Justin. Marjorie had five grandchildren Timothy, Rachel, Martin, Amanda and Melanie and was great grandmother to Sienna and Victoria (born 29 June). Her courage, love of nature and art, and steadfast devotion to her husband and family will always be remembered. Her memorial service in Westfield Parish Church is on Tuesday 25 August at 10:30am followed by Hastings Crematorium at 11:45. All friends are welcome. Any donations will be for the RSPB."

A Wheelchair for Arty Further to the article in the last newsletter, on 4th August Matt Williams, of Westfield Trees, completed a triathlon for Arthur Knight, the 2.5 year old son of friends.

Arty suffered a stroke at birth damaging the left side of his brain and causing severe kidney problems, visual impairment and epilepsy.

In August 2014, Arty underwent seven hours of brain surgery, with two thirds of the left side of his brain being removed in an attempt to stop the seizures, which thankfully it did. Arty is still very developmentally delayed and physically disabled however, and needs a specialist wheelchair at a cost of £5000.

Matt undertook the self-organised triathlon, in which he swam 750m towing a dinghy Matt with Arthur on 4 August containing his goddaughter, Matilda Bailey, cycled 20km with his son, Noah, on the back of his bike and ran 5km pushing Noah in a buggy, in order to help raise funds for the wheelchair. He completed the triathlon in an impressive 1 hour 38 minutes and, although the final figure is not yet in, it looks as though he has raised around £3000.

Matt would like to thank everyone who has supported and sponsored him but in particular the following people for their fundraising efforts: Mum Daphne, Pauline Filsell-Page, Toby Walsh and Sharron Bushell.

After over a year of planning applications to the Council, the Diocese, English Heritage etc. our lovely Grade 1 listed Church has new outer doors; beautifully crafted from English oak, they will soon mellow and darken.

We are extremely grateful to the Friends of Westfield Church for funding this work, which was very necessary for security reasons, and also the new Children's area which has been well used and enjoyed already.

We had some difficulty catching up with the grass cutting in the Churchyard, which covers such a large area, but is now, we hope, under control again.

The conservation area will be cut and cleared in October to encourage wild flower growth. In late July/early August the butterflies were loving it.

We would welcome any volunteers to assist with strimming or joining our working parties in Spring or Autumn.

Westfield Parish Church From the Curate…….

My name is Joy Collins and I am writing to introduce myself to you as the Curate for Westfield Church. ‘What is a Curate?’ It’s the question I’m most often asked especially by the taxi drivers who drive me to Westfield when I’ve failed to manage a positive interaction with the No. 2 bus! The Oxford Dictionary defines a Curate as ‘a member of the clergy engaged as assistant to a vicar, rector, or parish priest.’ So in other words I’m here to help Robert in the church and the parish and to learn on the job how to be a vicar.

I started in Westfield a year ago just after I had been ordained deacon in Chichester Cathedral on 28th June at a grand service with 16 other men and women. I was still working full-time for Hastings Borough Council so my time in the parish was limited.

However I was so warmly welcomed by the community in church and those I met in the village that I soon felt at home in the country. I still live in Hastings Old Town which has been home for us (my husband Dennis and our daughter Clemency) for over 30 years.

As a deacon I was able to lead some services, assist in others and was privileged to take funerals and help with the burial of ashes in the churchyard which is such a special place for the village. This was under-lined by the moving Daffodil Service and the Remembrance Day service attended by so many. I enjoyed Christmas– the busy Christingle services, the Christmas tree festival and the extraordinary wonders of the Westfield lights. I took some assemblies at the school which was quite scary but the children made it easy and amazed me with their singing.

This year I took early retirement from the Council at the end of March to be able to spend more time in ministry and it was good to reflect on this new beginning over my first Easter in the parish. On 2nd June I was ordained priest by the Bishop of Lewes with three other curates at the Church of the Holy Cross in Uckfield, This was a more intimate service than last year’s and was a wonderful experience.

As a priest I can now celebrate Holy Communion which I have found to be deeply rewarding. July will see me doing my first baptism and first wedding. It is so exciting and such a privilege and I am very grateful to the families and couples who are happy to let me (with my L plates) do this for them.

I look forward to meeting many more of you in the days ahead whether in church, at the bus-stop or at village events. Harvest Festival is coming soon with a barn dance, lunch and service, see page 22 for details and please do come.

Westfield Draw 2015/16 The last newsletter in mid-May gave details of the WCA’s fund-raising ‘Westfield Draw’ together with the fact that renewals or new members subscriptions were due May/June. The first Draw of the new listing takes place at the end of July, as you will see from the list of prizewinners below. Before the Millennium, this was called the 300 Club that is the target figure.

Thank you to everyone who has joined, supporting the WCA and possibly be a prize winner.

This year there are 25 new members; five people have left Westfield and over twenty have not renewed. In some areas I have delegated for collecting on the doorstep when, after a while, it seems that a personal collection will help. This happened in more cases than was intended but when the number was over 200, it demonstrates that doorstep collection is the more productive way forward. I had a suggestion that Standing Orders could be set up, thus saving shoe leather, phone calls and reminders. It is possible to pay by internet banking but reminders are still necessary, therefore an automatic payment may be best.

The funds enable the WCA to assist organisations to provide a bit extra for Westfield residents of all ages - the Fete and the Family Fun Day, the Senior Tea Party and organisations e.g. Bowls Club.

Westfield Youth Club continues to grow and we always look forward to September when we can welcome more new faces. If your child starts year 3 this September then they are also old enough to come to Youth Club.

Westfield Youth Club is in the Parish hall (next to the church) from 6.30-8pm on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday each month including school holidays, £1 membership for the year and 80p for each session. We are happy for parents to stay with their child for the first session. We always have crafts and cooking as well as a fun tournament and a tuck shop which sells sweets, crisps and drinks. There are various other activities for the children to do or they can sit and chat to their friends.

ESTFIELD WI held a strawberry tea in June, so business was kept to a

minimum before a quiz and delicious food were enjoyed. In July Ray Shayler told members about the remarkable life of Rudyard Kipling. The group enjoyed perfect weather for the outing to Michelham Priory and Firle Place in June, and another outing, to Hever Castle, takes place in September.

The WI has celebrated its centenary this year with national and local events. A group of Westfield members had a wonderful afternoon at the Pett WI Centenary Tea Party in June. The hall was packed with ladies dressed ready to ‘Put on the Ritz’, the tables were decorated with proper vintage china, cake stands and flowers, and waiters were ready to serve a delicious tea. Delightful music was provided by the Corelli String Quartet and a harpist, and a fashion show from Niche of Rye followed. Members also attended an East Sussex event at the Boship Hotel in July, which celebrated ‘100 Years of Food, Fashion and Flowers’. As well as exhibitions of food, flowers and fashions covering the last hundred years, the many visitors enjoyed demonstrations of exquisite sugarcraft flowers and centenary inspired flower arrangements, as well as a fun fashion parade covering the years from 1915.

Westfield WI meets in the Parish Hall on the second Tuesday of the month at 2.15 pm, and new members are very welcome. As well as monthly meetings with a wide variety of talks, there are interest and craft afternoons, a book club and outings as well as the opportunity to take part in County events.

The August meeting is the summer lunch, and then normal meetings resume on 8 September, when Trevor Weekes will talk about the work of the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service.

It was agreed last year that the regular Friday morning Hub sessions had se led into ‘just’ a coffee morning and that everyone appeared happy with that. Since then though, a not so quiet rhythm of ad hoc mini quizzes, compe ons and challenges has developed and there seems to have been involvement in much of whatever’s been going on in the parish.

A er a busy stand at the summer fete, the commi ee got down to organising a trip to make the most of the good weather before turning to a repeat trip to Hove for dinner and a li le light entertainment !

WESTFIELD HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

ince the last edition the Horticultural Society enjoyed a wonderful sunny day along with many other village groups at the Village Fete on the Parish Field in early June. We gave away over 60 pumpkin seedlings as apart of the Great Pumpkin competition (see page 32) so let's hope the plants are now beginning to bear fruit. We were also joined on our stall by Friary Gardens who brought along and sold a whole variety of perennial and annual plants. Many thanks to Jackie Fellows for her support.

Also in June we organised a coach trip to RHS Garden Wisley which was a huge success. The weather was kind for us and the trip was enjoyed by everyone.

For the first time in recent years the Society organised a self drive event to award winning Downderry Lavender Nursery near Hadlow on Saturday 25 July; this included a guided tour and demonstration on how the lavender is distilled.

A second self drive event to Friary Gardens on The Ridge, Hastings is being organised for 22 August; please watch out for the posters around the village and publicity for the details of this event.

Two further dates for the diary are the Autumn Show on 12 September and our AGM on 21 October. To date, as I write, it has been good growing weather for the fruit, vegetables and flowers so we are hoping for a bumper display at the Show, please spend a little time and start looking at the Show Schedule to decide which classes you are entering this year.

The committee always welcomes comments and ideas about the running of the Society so please come along to the AGM and have your say. We are also looking for new committee members to help to organise the 2016 calendar of events. Why not give it a go!!

number of residents have expressed their concerns about the performance of KIER in the last couple of months in particular, since the change in the “rounds” operated by the contractor. I am pleased to say that the number of “missed bins” are falling but remain at an unacceptable level. KIER have now appointed a new Manager and I expect that this will lead to a much speedier response to this issue for the longer term. 1) A "one off" missed collection: On the home page of the RDC website there is a section "Rubbish & Recycling". Click on "missed bins" and "Report a missed collection to our Waste & Recycling Team" and report the miss before 5 p.m. the next working day. Kier will then empty the bin.

If the report cannot be made in that time send an email to customer.services@rother.gov.uk giving full details including postcode and Customer Services will action the "miss".

Akela, Frances Richardson, and two of our ex Scouts Ross Jones and Alex Wilde jetted off to Japan at the end of July for the World Scout Jamboree. A great experience and by all accounts they were having a wonderful time.

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Frances (Akela) for all her hard work in collating photographs and memorabilia into a superb display shown at our Centenary Get Together in May, a wonderful job. Members of the Group sang a selection of Camp Fire songs and many awards were handed out by our District Commissioner, Judith Collins, both to young people and adults who help the Group in many ways.

We look forward to a new era with new people with fresh ideas to keep 1st Westfield Scouts offering the young people fun and exciting challenges.

Since the last newsletter we, at the Bowls Club, have progressed; the new pavilion and furnishings are now complete. We held our Official Open Day on 30 May with invited guests; Barbara Balkham, our Parish Clerk, officially declared the pavilion open. Another Open Day a month later for visitors was well attended.

Games have taken place since April and, as usual, results have been mixed. On the social/fund-raising side our “live” music night in the Parish Hall was very well supported. Other activities include a BBQ, Quiz night, Elvis night, Presentation night with a meal and Christmas Carol night.

e have to report that the 1st X1 has been relegated from the Sussex County Football League Division 2 for the first time in the clubs existence. This is not because of ability on the soccer pitch as the 1st X1 actually finished in 12th place in Division 2 with three clubs below them. However, as the facilities at the Parish Field do not meet the requirements of step 6 in the FA standards it means that the three clubs below Westfield FC escape relegation at the expense of WFC. This means that WFC now lose their senior status for the first time in 16 years.

All of this could, of course, have been avoided if the "Downs project" had come to fruition. A very sad time for all at WFC including the many friends and regular supporters.

Following a very successful time last season, when they finished runners up, the Reserves will again be playing in the Reserve Section East, as yet again the Parish Field Facilities do not meet the required standards of the Reserve Section Premier.

On a brighter note the 3rd team have been promoted to Division 3 of the East Sussex League.

The youth set up at Westfield FC has seen dramatic growth over the last couple of years, as a Football Club we are focussed on delivering a healthy and fun hobby for local children to participate in regardless of children’s current playing ability or experience. We now have 13 youth teams aged from U7 through to U17, our hope is that these youth team players progress to playing for our three adult teams and we eventually see successful Westfield FC teams that contain local players from the village and surrounding areas. All of our youth team managers are now FA qualified to the minimum of a Level 1, first aid trained and DBS checked.

We have been busy working towards the FA’s Charter Standard award which recognises clubs who meet certain standards; we are delighted to have been awarded the FA Charter Standard ‘Development Club’ award, this is a fantastic achievement for the club and our ambition is to move towards the ‘Community Standard’ award.

Our desire to see the Football Club become more of a community club has seen our partnership with Pass+Move football continue to develop with their ongoing Monday community coaching attracting in excess of 20 local children each week and the new ‘Girls Only’ sessions are steadily growing, we hope that these will lead to the introduction of the Club’s first Girls Team (having a girls/ladies team is what we need to be able to reach the FA Community Club award).

At the end of August we will see three of our youth teams (U7, U8 & U9) travel to Dordrecht in Holland to participate in a friendly football exchange. Each team will play three games of football against three local Dutch teams. This is going to be a great football experience for the children and also a fantastic life experience as they will see a different culture, food, football and language.

Window on Westfield The Westfield Parish Council Newsletter Compiled by Barbara Balkham, clerk to the Council. A brief summary of Council business conducted at their May, June and July meetings.

May was a difficult month for the Parish Council, with administrative problems at the Polling Station managed by Rother District Council. For some weeks we were without a full Council. A skeleton council of the four members from Kent Street and Westfield Lane, with two District Council nominees, dealt with urgent business until the poll results were finally declared on 20th May, and the new Council took office on 3rd June. Because of the polling station issues Rother District Council agreed not to make any charge for the election administration in Westfield Ward. James Woodhead was re-elected as Chairman and Jackie Smith as Vice Chairman. The clerk's retirement was discussed and the process to recruit her replacement was agreed. The siding work of overgrown vegetation along the A28 footway from Moor Lane to Mill Lane was completed, allowing a wider pedestrian path. PCSO Georghiou reported on increases in ant-social behaviour in the village, and initiatives he was taking to try to tackle this. Jackie Smith offered her support for these measures and agreed to attend residents' meetings about the problems.

June: Roger Carrier attended the June meeting to offer background information and an up-date on the current situation of the Westfield Down Project, including "the next steps" - a discussion of the issues requiring decisions and the public consultation which will be planned.

The Council agreed to look at whether a new volunteer car scheme could be set up, with Catherine Collingwood taking the lead on the project. ESCC agreed to part fund the replacement of two rotten fingerpost signs, and the work was ordered. The Recreation Ground was subject to an arson attack with Emergency Services attending at around 8am on 20th June. The fire was soon extinguished, but the climbing frame was a complete write-off, three trees and part of the hedge were also burned. Cost estimates for clearing up the mess and replacing the burned play equipment with something of equal value came in at a cost exceeding ÂŁ20,000. An insurance claim was lodged and settlement is expected soon.

Councillors reported receiving many complaints about overgrown verges and hedges and the Clerk was asked to pass these on the relevant authorities. The Clerk was also asked to write to some individual householders whose hedge was causing a problem for pedestrians. Councillors agreed to supply photos and a brief profile to put on the website, so that parishioners would know a little about their parish representatives. Arrangements were put in hand to change bank signatories to newly elected councillors. Reports were received of damaged or missing traffic speed signs at several parish locations. This had been reported to ESCC a year ago, and the Clerk was ask to send reminders.

Westfield Wheelies ..... ..…needs a new co-ordinator Westfield Wheelies: a community transport scheme that matches volunteer car drivers to those with transport needs, especially in connection with medical appointments, used to be popular within the village and now needs a revival.

One or two volunteers are needed to co-ordinate the scheme. If you have a bit of spare time and are good at communicating please give me a call to discuss it further.

WESTFIELD VILLAGE FETE Saturday 6 June

W

estfield was blessed with a beautiful sunny, if somewhat windy, day for the annual fete on the Parish Field.

A procession through the village brought Elsa and Olaf, Disney characters, together with Minecraft Steve, to join Keith Cheetham for the Opening of the afternoon’s entertainment. A large inflatable Dinosaur depicted the theme.

Arena events included gymnastics and Street dance displays, tug-of-war with sideshows of Rodeo Westfield Community Association Bull, Stocks was most grateful for donations and Assault to the Grand Draw from: course. The Bewl Water Fire Engine CBS Builders and Carr Taylor Vineyard Ambulance Dale Hill Hotel and Golf Club Service Feathers attended until Hastings Aquarium called away.

Kelly Mobile Hairdresser Stalls included Rye Lions, Westfield Church, the WI, the Kent Street Nursery Lighthouse Fish and Chips – Jon Baker Community Association’s Books and Grand Draw, the Hub, Guides and Brownies, Horticultural Society with Friary Netherfield Hill Farm Gardeners, Youth Club, Football Club, Sole to Soul the New Inn’s Real Ales and a Hog Strawberry Fair Roast with Hungry Hog. The Flower Girl – Sophie Our local MP, Amber Rudd, dropped in The New Inn for her third fete visit of the day.

The Plough Inn Wealden Will Writing – Paul Billingham Grand Draw tickets sales were exceptionally good; thanks to everyone Westfield News who bought them all afternoon and to Westfield Trees those who responded to the books ….. and many individuals circulated with the May newsletter. Many happy winners, also Hastings Direct for a contribution from near and far, included Liz, Linda and Mike, all towards the ticket printing.

Westfield residents, who won the cash prizes. £500 from Westfield Community Association the Draw was part of the overall sum of £1,000+ raised for Council members agreed the Cash the WCA with organisations also fund-raising. prizes of £100, £50 & £25.

Congratulations and thanks to Rachel, Sally and their friends for making Westfield Village Fete 2015 on the Parish Field the success it was. Some of the hard work was down to James Tassell for lending and moving the straw bales and JM Skip Hire for dealing with the rubbish f.o.c., also thanks Bin Man Dan. There are others who know who they are but a big thank you to all.
