Westfield Community Association Newsletter No. 157 August 2016

The Referendum on our future with the EU took place as the last newsletter was published. Now, the Olympics in Rio are currently inspiring many youngsters - how many medals will Team GB bring home? As I write they are stacking up. I wish to thank Patrick (The New Inn) for donating the t-shirts (not sure about the brightness of the green, though it is Westfield’s colour) to the Community Association. These may be worn at WCA events to identify the organisers and purpose. “WCA Volunteer” - look out for them, they cannot be missed!! It seems that Patrick/New Inn appears in many places - we ask continually for volunteers to help with community life, it just so happens he also runs a prominent business and is a good egg. I am told that social media has now become the means of communication for anything in Westfield and this newsletter is no longer relevant. Is this why it is so difficult to get some people to forward copy/information on time to be included? It is good to know that there are readers who say they want me to continue in this format. Thank You! Pauline Filsell-Page, Editor

Louis Robert Garside Private - 2715 - 21st (4th Public Schools) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, 98th Brigade, 33rd Division. Born 1890 in West Wickham, Kent the son of Thomas (commercial traveller in fancy goods) and Louisa Garside formerly of Leeds, Yorkshire. The 1891 census records that Louis, then aged 9 months, was living with his parents and six elder siblings at Grosvenor Road, West Wickham, Kent. The 1911 census finds Louis, then aged 20 years, living and working as an assistant teacher in a private school at 49, Baldslow Road, Hastings. The census also records that his widowed mother and three of his siblings were then living at ‘Sandycroft’, Westfield. They later moved to ‘Four Winds’, Westfield. The 4th Public Schools Battalion, later designated 21st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, was formed on 11th September 1914 by the Public Schools and University Men’s Force. In February 1915 the University and Public Schools Brigade (U.P.S.) comprising the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st Battalions, Royal Fusiliers began entering their new camp at Woodcote Park, Epsom. Here their training continued until May when they travelled north to Clipstone, 15 miles from Nottingham. On 26th June the U.P.S. were officially renamed the 98th Brigade and came under the control of the 33rd Division. Three days later Private Garside died of meningitis in Nottingham’s Bagthorpe Hospital. The spread of diseases such as meningitis and influenza became inevitable following rapid influx of thousands of young men to the forces who suddenly found themselves living in close proximity to each other. Many young men recovered after a short spell in hospital, others like Louis succumbed to their illness before they had even left England. Louis was buried with full military honours in Church Cemetery, Nottingham.

ome of you may think it a little early for me to be writing this. However, God bless our editor, who reminded me that it always pays to draw the attention of our volunteers and supporters to the approach of this particular good cause. As always we are immensely grateful to the loyal (but small) band of volunteers who each year give up time and effort to collect house to house. I thank them and pay them tribute. We would dearly like to have a few more helpers for this annual collection which makes such a difference to those injured or harmed in other ways in defence of us all. If you could spare just a little time and effort please contact me on 01424 751129. The burden would be so much less if shared more widely. Thank you, thank you John Butterworth, Volunteer Organiser

Ed: Lian and Matthew Kent wished this article to be in the WCA Newsletter; it also appeared on Facebook ‘What’s on in Westfield’.

Dear All, It seems a lifetime ago that we received the devastating diagnosis that our youngest daughter Fia has Alexander Disease. Such a heart-breaking time for everyone especially her brothers Fraser and Freddie and sister Froggie (Florence). Alexander Disease is a very rare, degenerative brain disease with sadly no current treatment or cure........... (yet). Well, move forward three months and life for us is totally different, firstly three amazing ladies stepped into our lives like a whirlwind Becky Sullivan Rose, Kim Webb and Kat Nanji. From that moment we’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity, kindness and support we have been shown from many different individuals, groups, communities as well as our local Health and Social Care teams. An amazing £10,000 has been raised for Fia which is unbelievable, some fundraisers were very sneaky and hid this from us very well (you know who you are!!) We have been able to book a once-in-a-lifetime holiday to Disneyland in Florida for October; we are all so excited especially as we have only been to Legoland!! We have purchased a preloved trailer tent as we all love camping (or glamping as many friends now point out!) and have had several much needed local weekend breaks away with the children. We have just come back from Camp Bestival where we were so privileged to be on the guest list and Fia got to meet the amazing Mr Tumble!! (photo right) We have purchased a new camera to ensure we capture as many moments and memories together that we will cherish forever. It doesn't stop here!!! Currently Fia's ‘Go Fund Me’ page has closed and another will be opened for the 'Friends of Fia' to raise money for multi accessible equipment for the recreation field (playpark). It's our greatest wish to see Fia, her siblings and friends play and socialise together in a safe environment whilst parents and friends can get together. So far 'Friends of Fia' have raised £1500 from Fia's Funday held at Freshwinds campsite in Pett on 23rd July. This was an amazing day that continued well into the night with live music, children's activities and gorgeous food. There are so many who have been so kind, impossible to name everyone, but must mention Patrick from The New Inn, 24/7 Taxis, French's skips, Pocket Park, Pulse school of circus skills, all the fabulous bands, Tim Jury of Freshwinds plus all our wonderful volunteers on the day. This was so successful that we are planning bigger and better for next year and have picked up many tips from Camp Bestival!! Other events are planned, the first a silent auction to be held at Azur on 23rd September. We have set up a Facebook page 'Friends of Fia' to keep all the fundraising ideas, events, news, photos and information awareness in one place so please do take a look. Fia loves people, she loves being social and she loves her new found independence with her walker. Please do say 'hi' to Fia if you see her out and about - on the school run or at the playpark, this makes her day and ours!! A happy Fia is a happy family!! We are so lucky to live in this lovely village with lovely people and again a huge thank you to everyone for making us smile and giving us the opportunity to enjoy our time together. For Fia, life is for living, loving and socialising. All our love Lian & Matt X 7

Do you take the local Observer newspaper to read about village activity and Westfield in particular? Janice is kindly holding the fort until someone else volunteers to gather information together and send an email to the publication each week. Once organisations know this is a way to advertise or report on their activities/events, they supply the words so it is just a matter of putting all the items together and off it goes. If you feel you are able to relieve Janice of this, please contact her for further details jm.bolton@btinternet.com. You can also talk through what is involved with Colin at the Observer. NEW GP With effect from 1st September 2016 Dr. Sarah Davis will be joining our team at Sedlescombe & Westfield. Dr. Davis is originally from Manchester, trained at Leicester University and qualified in 1997. She undertook her GP training in Tunbridge Wells and alongside her GP work has worked in a sexual health clinic since 2001. She has special interests in contraception and sexual health, young people and safeguarding.

WHY DO WE CHARGE PATIENTS FOR LETTERS? The National Health Service provides most health care to most people free of charge. However, there are exceptions when a service is not covered by the NHS; for example: medical reports, Declarations of Fitness Certificates, Insurance Company reports, claim forms and other letters and forms which require the doctor to review the patient's medical records. When a doctor signs a certificate or completes a report, no matter how ‘simple the form’, it is a condition of remaining on the Medical Register that they only sign what they know to be true. Therefore, in order to complete even the simplest of forms, the doctor needs to check the patient's entire medical record and this takes time. Carelessness or an inaccurate report can have serious consequences for the doctor and the patient. It is not just a signature! Time spent completing these forms and preparing reports takes the GP away from the medical care of his/her patients and normally the doctor will complete this work outside the NHS contracted hours and I am sure that you would not expect to work for free. In addition, as a VAT registered business, we also have to add VAT to our charges where applicable. Our GP’s are inundated daily with demands from patients for signatures on simple forms, non NHS related; GPs already have a very heavy workload and paperwork takes up an increasing amount of their time.

DISPENSING – 48 HRS (TWO WORKING DAYS) NOTICE FOR REPEAT PRESCRIPTIONS Over the last ten years there has been over a 20% increase in the number of prescriptions dispensed from our two surgeries without any additional funding from the NHS. It is essential therefore that 48 hours notice is given when requesting repeat medications. When a request is received it is checked against the medical records and any queries with any of the medications requested have to be discussed with a GP before a prescription is raised, this does take time. Of late there has been an increase of the number of patients who have run out of their medications and request them on the day. All medications are not legally allowed to be dispensed to the patient until the GP has signed the prescription form and these ‘urgent’ requests cause delays and may require us to increase the notice period in the future. We therefore ask you to be mindful to put your request in on time.

Remember the dispensary at Westfield closes at 12.30 hrs on Wednesdays. 11

WESTFIELD HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Summer 2016 Despite the changeable weather there has still been plenty of opportunity to enjoy flowers and floral activities. WHS and Friary Gardeners took part in the village fete with a well stocked plant stall. Our trip to Borde Hill Gardens was on a chilly but sunny day in May and we were able to see the azaleas and camellias in all their glory. The annual trip to Wisley in July was on a warmer, sunny day and we just had to dodge the thunderstorms! The flowers and greenhouses were worth it all. Currently we have a 6 week course of Floral Art taking place with the very experienced Sheila Benson. This has proved very popular and everyone is amazed by what they can achieve with a bit of instruction. If you are interested in future classes please get in touch.

Autumn 2016 We are looking forward to the Autumn Show on Saturday 10 September. Please have a look at the Show Schedule to see what you might like to enter. There are classes for flowers, vegetables, home produce, baking, art, crafts as well as fun classes and children’s classes. It is good fun entering and there are lots of prizes to be won. The Show takes place in the Community Hall and doors open for viewing at 2.30pm. The AGM is on Wednesday 19 October, if you are interested in joining the Committee please talk to any Committee member to find out more. Last year we held a Pumpkin Competition which was a huge success. People brought their pumpkins of all shapes and sizes to be weighed and admired. Pumpkin treats were available and there were prizes for everyone. We will be repeating this on Saturday 22 October at midday in the New Inn. Please bring your pumpkins along.

1ST WESTFIELD SCOUT GROUP

C

urrently there are about 45 young people in the Group. However, with much sadness we are having to close the Scout troop as from September. Many of the current Scouts are moving on, either to Explorers or College etc and our Leader, Matt Dunne, has to give up due to work commitments. For some time we have been running with fewer Leaders and this situation has not changed, therefore this step has to be taken. The Beavers and Cubs have had a very good year under the new Leaders and will continue as usual. If you have a child interested in joining either of these sections please contact Frances on 01424 754548. She would also be pleased to advise you on other Scout troops that are not far away. There were 19 Westfield Cubs and Scouts at our local camp in May and everyone had a really good time. Scouts have been on a survival camp, sleeping in shelters, cooking over an open fire with no utensils and we are looking forward to the Summer activity camp in August where planned activities include rafting, climbing, archery and kayaking. We held our usual end of term/year camp fire and barbeque and, of course this year, the weather was glorious. It was well attended by families and very successful - a nice way to end the year. Two of the Leaders ran a sideshow at the Village Fete in June - a “throw a wet sponge” at victims in the stocks. It was again lovely weather but we were disappointed at the small sum we made but a fun afternoon nevertheless. We always try to join in village events, when Leaders are willing to give up their time. If anyone would care to become a Leader in any section we would be very pleased to see you so please contact Frances on 754548 for full details Rosemary Bond – Secretary 01424 754080 rosebond@btinternet.com 17

M

embers of Wes ield WI have enjoyed three good mee ngs during the summer. The May mee ng started with discussions of resolu ons to be brought before the Na onal AGM, the first urging supermarkets to avoid food waste and help to address food poverty, and the second calling for appropriate care in hospitals for people with demen a. Our Fashion Show from Bon Marché had proved a popular event, and raised £100 for the Sara Lee Trust. Business was kept to a minimum at the June mee ng to leave plenty of me to enjoy a quiz followed by a strawberry tea. Members reported good business at the WI cake stall at the village fete. June Felstead, accompanied by her dog Molly, told us about ALSAR Search and Rescue Dogs in July. Few members had heard about this Lowland equivalent of Mountain Rescue, and we heard how the na onally qualified search dog teams are trained, ready to support the emergency services looking for vulnerable missing people. Wes ield WI has around 40 members, and is a very friendly group of women. From September it will meet in the Parish Hall on the second Friday of the month at 2.15 pm, a change from Tuesdays to accommodate Playgroup’s request to have the hall then. The next mee ng will now be on Friday 9 September, when we hope that Melanie Gibson‐Barton will be talking about 'Bruges ‐ more than just chocolate' on the new date. The compe on is a home‐made chocolate item. We are hoping for good weather for an ou ng to Bewl Water later in the month, which includes a boat trip and a meal. New members are welcome at any mee ng. Please ring Valerie Walkinshaw (President) on 07927 403200 if you would like more informa on. As well as monthly mee ngs, ac vi es include a book club, ou ngs and lunches. We join Simon Delamare with other local ins tutes for two group mee ngs each year, and Interior Decoration Specialist members can take part in country City and Guilds Qualified events, ou ngs and workshops. Westfield Parish Church From the Vicarage.. At the me of wri ng it is a lovely summer’s day. Summer is here at last and how long have we had to wait for it this year! On 24 July we had the second of our open‐air services for the year, our pet service, organized by Rev Joy, our curate. It was good to see a number of dogs, plus a chicken and a rather large s ck insect. Joy welcomed David Jones from ‘Pets as Therapy’ to speak to us. A na onal charity founded in 1983, it seeks to provide companionship and friendship and helps to tackle loneliness, and also to improve the lives of people suffering from debilita ng mental and physical health condi ons and illnesses such as Au sm, Demen a and Stroke by including animal assisted interven ons as part of a holis c approach to treatment (from their website). This reminded me of the me I spent at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough run by the Sue Ryder organiza on. We had visit from what were affec onately known as ‘pe ng dogs’ or ‘pat dogs’. One par cular black Labrador brought great comfort to someone who was severely ill as it reminded them of a pet they once had, and brought them love and joy at their me of great need. I was also interested to hear how the pets, especially dogs, help to improve literacy in children by developing their confidence, interest and enjoyment in reading through the read2dogs scheme. Children would o en read to the pets where they would not to adults, and also wri ng about the animals helped their crea vity. Further informa on can be found on their website www.petsastherapy.org It was good to thank God for all that pets mean to so many people and as part of our families. As the first hymn we sung said: You made the pets we welcome in, they're wondrous blessings, too. With paws and whiskers, wings and fins, they offer praise to you. O Lord, you call us to embrace these creatures in our care. May we show kindness, love and grace to all pets everywhere. By loving creatures you hold dear, we offer you our praise. Our other open‐air service was at the end of June, celebra ng the day of our patron Saint John the Bap st: on that occasion we were joined by Bishop Mar n Warner, the Bishop of Chichester, for both the service and picnic a erwards. Bishop Mar n talked about families, the family of the church, the family of the community and how we work together. We were also delighted that some of the children from Wes ield Primary School came to sing at the service and one of the songs was the winning song for the ‘Thrives for Has ngs’ compe on – ‘Has ngs Seaside Celebra on’ (you can find it on You Tube, and also via a link from the school Facebook page.) Our thanks to them and the staff for joining us on that special occasion. One of the highlights of the last few weeks has been star ng our new Parents and Toddlers group. We meet on Wednesdays from 1.30 to 3pm in term me, in the church. This is a great opportunity for pre‐school children to socialize, and for parents to find friendship and support from others at the same stage of paren ng. This group is open to all and we hope to have stories, games, songs and much more. We start again on 7 September. Also coming up in the Autumn is our Harvest Fes val and lunch on 2 October, and Remembrance Sunday on 13 November. But before then please do join us for our Garden Party where there will be something for everyone including music, a magician/illusionist, games and lots of tea and cake. It is completely free but you may like to bring your own picnic and chairs. Please also look at our new Facebook page (search for ‘Wes ield Church’). Here you will find up to date informa on about what is happening in the church, and also photos of services, weddings, events and much more. Every blessing RevRob 22

Westfield Fete on 11 June was a great success - a traditional afternoon’s entertainment enjoyed by many residents and visitors. Section 5 Drummers led the procession from the New Inn WI Ladies

and played during the afternoon - also Rusty Nuts who brilliantly provided the rest of the music all afternoon. The young people in the arena were amazing and a joy to watch. The Classic Cars, 1066 Model Flying Club, Fire Engine, Ambulance etc all contributed to the afternoon’s entertainment. The funds raised at this WCA fete go towards future Rusty Nuts events and projects for Westfield people of all ages.

A big thank you to Annie Nijhuis who took on the role of organiser, ably assisted by committee members Patrick in particular - and all helpers. Also thanks to Dave Cromwell from the Battle Medieval Fayre committee for helping to The Hub supply various stall items. Thank you to organisations who ran stalls, businesses for their support - and Westfield Football Club for providing the teas, bar and clubhouse facilities, the WI for their delicious cakes, Playgroup for running the bouncy castle in addition to their stall and everyone who generously donated prizes. We were most grateful for £100 donated by J. Perigoe and Son, Funeral Directors, for the first prize in the Grand Draw, won by Eric the other cash prize winners were Renee and Audrey. These were delivered along with other prizes and Westfield News displayed a list of the prize winners. Further photos of the proceedings may be seen on the Facebook page ’What’s on in Westfield’. 24

Annual Family Fun Day - Parish Field Westfield Youth Club would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed the Funday on Sunday 14 August. The weather was very kind to us and the day was well attended. We couldn't have managed it without the support of the WCA and Westfield Church who both contributed towards the day. It was lovely to see new faces attending the dog show. Colossal Events were brilliant as always and our new feature this year was Phil from Jaws N Claws with his creatures. We would also like to thank our fantastic Dog Show Judge Anne Webb and Steward Ginny Whitney; Patrick Edwards from the New Inn and "Short Bark N Sides" for donating raffle prizes; and Westfield Football Club for providing the refreshments. WESTFIELD COMMUNITY HUB Venue: The New Inn Friday mornings from 10am to noon We just want to make sure everyone knows that the Hub now meets at the New Inn between 10am and 12 every Friday (except bank holidays) and everyone is welcome. We haven’t organised an awful lot over the past few months but there are a few things coming up. Our regular fundraising Play Your Cards Right game was carried forward three times before someone won a very handsome £40 prize and tickets for the more modest 50:50 draw for the next six months are still available. We boosted our own funds further by selling a fair few strawberries with cream at the village fete, and the many children who tried the lucky dip were impressed. Many of us are looking forward to an evening trip arranged for late August to enjoy a fish and chip supper on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. We hope that there will be a good turnout on Friday 30 September for another World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support, raising funds for cancer nurses – any contributions towards the raffle will be gratefully received on the day. The Hub AGM will be arranged for some time in the period of this newsletter but the date hasn’t been fixed yet. Sharron Bushell, Chairman

Wes ield Youth Club needs your help! The youth club has been going for several years now with a large number of children a ending every session. For us to con nue we desperately need more volunteers. No special training is required, we just ask that you have a pa ent nature, a good sense of humour and a sense of fun. e would like to start by saying a HUGE thank you to WI, Friendship Club and the Lunch Club (and all those who supported us) for changing the days they use the Parish Hall for their meetings to enable us to have much needed longer opening hours from September. We are now open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 9 am - 3 pm and Wednesday morning 9 am - 12 noon In May our trip to Knockhatch was on a beautiful sunny day, we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. During our usual sessions in May, our children grew cress to use in their sandwiches, which they made. Our Sports Day and BBQ in June went well, the children enjoyed the races and were very proud when presented with their certificate and medal. Two really cute ducklings came to visit one morning. In July the children loved visits from Police Officers Stacey and Nigel. They gave a talk on safety and let the children try out their helmets, hats and hand cuffs, plus sit in/on the Police car and motorbike. Gemma the Paramedic brought her Ambulance and equipment for the children to explore; she talked about how she helps us so that if the children ever needed to go in one they will know what to expect and feel more at ease. Our ‘School Leaver’s Pirate Party’ was such fun - we dressed up, had a disco, made a big pirate ship, walked the plank and had balloons. The hall was decorated with a pirate banner the children had made. We will miss them all and would like to wish the children and their families all the best for the future. I would like to thank all my staff and committee members for all their hard work and support over the last year. We have playgroup spaces if you are interested - you are more than welcome to drop in at any time or contact Julie 0779 074 4404. PLEASE JOIN OUR FACEBOOK PAGE AND SEE ALL THE LOVELY ACTIVITIES WE OFFER PLUS UPDATES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING WITHIN OUR SETTING.

Westfield Parent & Toddler Group no longer takes place on Fridays. This is partly due to other groups swapping to Fridays to allow Playgroup the longer hours we desperately needed to continue. Our thanks to Joan, Shelley and Felicity for all their help over the years. However, Parents and Toddlers now get together weekly in term-time, 2 - 3 pm Wednesdays, in Westfield Church for play, coffee, cake and chat in a relaxed atmosphere. Contact Lian 0771 231 5947 or Natalie 0786 381 9662 for more information 30

ell, what an exciting couple of summer terms we have had, time really does fly when you are having fun!

Our children have all had the opportunity to get out into the great outdoors to do some learning, with Year 6 going to Frog Firle Farm, Year 4 spending the day at Great Dixter and Year 2 enjoying a day out at Bexhill Forest School. We had a very active Healthy Schools week at the beginning of June with Bollywood dancing, skipping workshops and Chartwell cookery school. However, our planned Sports Day had to be postponed due to the inclement weather but we managed to pick a scorcher of a day at the end of the school term and all enjoyed a lovely day of sports and sunshine. Our Westfield school PTA held a summer Frozen Friday extravaganza just before the end of term with many games, events and dancing for a fun afternoon. The afternoon was a huge success, with our thanks going to everyone who supported the event, either by helping on the day or just turning up and enjoying the afternoon. Pennies are still being counted but it looks to be an amazing £500 raised for the school which will go towards other events, activities and resources for the benefit of our pupils. Many stars were born as our Year 5 & 6 pupils gave us two nights to remember with their fantastic performances of The Lion King during the last days of our school year. The children took on responsibilities in all roles in the production, including lighting, acting and singing. With sadness we closed our doors on Friday 22 July and said a fond farewell to all our Year 6 pupils as they spread their wings and fledged the nest. We also bid farewell to Miss Broomhead, our year 6 teacher and Miss Everett, our year 2 teacher, who have left us for their own pastures new. We wish them all good luck and happiness for the future. We are looking forward to a well-earned summer break. School will reopen for business as usual on Wednesday 7 September.

The rain finally relented and the sun appeared for us to enjoy our bowls more. Our results this year, as normal, have been mixed putting us about half way in the Rother League with games in hand. During July and August we have around 25 fixtures in approximately 60 days. Our Annual Captains Day, for fund raising, was held in perfect weather and with about 60 people attending it was very enjoyable and successful. From 28 September our popular cuppa and chat sessions will restart and be weekly on Wednesday afternoons from 2.30 pm to 4 pm. The cost is ÂŁ1. Our Zumba Gold classes, run by a qualified instructor, are continuing in the clubhouse Mondays 3 - 4 pm except Bank Holidays ÂŁ4 per person. David Thomas Chairman 01424 754748

Westfield Football Club

he new season has arrived without the usual break from football, due to the Euros [swiftly on]. A busy time for every Club, Westfield being no exception. Jon our groundsman has used his usual magic in repairing the goal mouths and getting the pitch ready for another season – a big thank you. This season sees more changes in that the “reserve section” which had been in three separate Divisions - East, West & Central - has been dramatically reduced. There is now only the one Division and the teams had to fit certain criteria regarding their grounds i.e. floodlights etc. Westfield, therefore, had no alternative but to place the “reserve” team in the East Sussex Premier Division. Our 3rd Team are now in Division 1 after promotion. Our Southern Combination Division 2 will look different with Ferring, Ifield Galaxy & Hurstpierpoint leaving and AFC Vardeanians & Billingshurst both having been promoted to Division 1. We welcome Jarvis Brook, Worthing Town Leisure Lancing and Sidlesham to our Division. Last season was indeed our first season in Division 2 finishing 10th. It was apparent that there were some very good teams that should be playing in higher Divisions, but are being held back by their grounds. This being illustrated with Billingshurst being promoted after finishing 5th. This naturally leads me to our ongoing issue with our new ground; we are still inching closer with pre contracts drawn up and we hope all parties concerned will be signing and exchanging soon. Our Division 2 status will remain until we have our new ground, that is a sad fact. Last season was a rebuilding season, due to most of the established players from both the 1st team and reserves leaving for numerous reasons. The extra travelling had a big impact on the loss of players. Our season finished well with good results, so I remain optimistic for this coming season. On a positive note Westfield FC was presented with the “Hospitality Award” at the Southern Combination Award night - some achievement as this was over all Divisions. As Chairman it gave me great satisfaction to receive this on the night. Lastly, I wish all three of our teams a good season and welcome all visiting teams to The Parish Field. Mick Kempster Chairman

We are now in to the second half of a busy season, we had a good run in the Busbridge Bash T20 competition finishing joint second in the league stages. With 6 games to go in the league we are currently in fourth position with a game in hand so everything to play for in terms of getting promotion. The recent tour of Dorset and Hampshire was enjoyed by all of those members that went however the results were not good as we lost on both occasions but a good time was had by all. In addition to all the efforts on the pitch we had a successful Open Day which was held at Westfield School in conjunction with the Sussex Cricket Foundation and Westfield School following which 21 pupils were invited to attend Summer coaching at Horntye and I am pleased to report that 9 pupils have already attended this free coaching by Sussex Cricket Foundation. This event was the beginning of our new junior section which starts in the 2017 season, in the meantime our club will be holding some lunchtime sessions at Westfield School from 8th September and Sussex Cricket Foundation will be holding 20 weeks of free coaching at an after school club, at the school, from the end of October through until March 2017. The cricket club are also delighted to announce that we have formalised our arrangement with Westfield School by both parties signing a partnership agreement for the purpose of developing and promoting cricket in the school and club. All in all a busy but very promising season so far and we are looking forward to a successful second half of the season. I.T.

Window on Westfield The Westfield Parish Council Newsletter Compiled by the clerk to the Council Kate Darbyshire. A brief summary of Council business conducted at their May, June & July meetings. Full minutes are on the website http://www.westfieldvillage.co.uk/councilpapers or from the clerk.

May James Woodhead was re-elected as Chairman and Jackie Smith as Vice Chairman. District and County Councillor, Carl Maynard attended the meeting, and reported that the Boundary Commission had respected the Parish Councils proposals for the Ward Boundaries. A new Highways Contractor has been appointed, and Councillor Maynard believes this will save money and increase efficiency. John Copp will remain as Highways Steward for Westfield. June Demi (Demetrius Georghiou), Westfield’s PCSO informed a Councillor that he was now seconded to Hastings, and that Westfield will be covered by a group of PCSOs based in Battle. He wanted his thanks to the Parish Council for their help and support to go on record. Similarly, the Council expressed their thanks to Demi for his dedication to Westfield. Westfield Trees were given the go ahead to remove the tree branches damaged by the fire the previous year. The work to install the new climber and rope seat swing began mid-June. Initially it was believed that the benches would need to be moved, in order to leave sufficient space around the new equipment. On advice from HAGS that they did not need to be moved, it was decided that the money budgeted for moving the benches, should be used on an inclusive swing seat instead. All the new equipment was in place in the Play Park in time for the annual ROSPA inspection on the 27th June. A harness for the inclusive swing will be bought and fitted in due course.

July Roger Carrier and Ian Taylor from Westfield Cricket Club attended the July Council meeting. They outlined a proposal to improve and renew the facilities on the cricket ground. The existing facilities are old and not “fit for purpose. Over the last 3 years the club has moved up through the leagues, and they now wish to encourage youth involvement, and are planning to have their own coach for next season. Roger Carrier said that the Club would facilitate the project, with Ian Taylor acting as project manager but the Council would have to take the lead. The Council strongly supported the proposal in principal, and as a result Roger will produce a detailed plan for the next meeting. Reports were received from residents about cars not stopping at the zebra crossing outside the school. It was suggested that Parishioners who encountered incidents at the crossing, should report them by calling 101. In event of any injury then call 999. Several reports of overgrown hedges and long grass along the footpaths on the A28 had been received. The Clerk has reported several issues to East Sussex Highways, and they have advised that the next grass cutting along Westfield Lane will take place on 1st August. They have also stated that the overgrown hedges have been reported through to the Steward who will inspect and decide on the appropriate course of action. Parishioners can report a problem on the new website www.eastsussexhighways.com (this has now replaced Fix My Street). On the new site you will be able to track your query with a unique reference number and access updates on all the issues that have been reported in your area. The Chairman expressed his thanks to Ron Burton for his work as Parish Clerk & RFO, wishing him well for the future. The chairman welcomed Kate Darbyshire to the role of Parish Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer for Westfield Parish. 01424 756973 Westfield Parish Clerk <westfieldcouncil@gmail.com> Westfield Parish Council Members Westfield Ward: Roger Bowe Michael Horley Hamish Monro Sarah Green
