he Barbados Defence Force recently celebrated its 46th Anniversary with a Church Parade at Matthias Church, themed “Committed and Courageous in Service.” The event was held under the patronage of The Very Reverend Dr. Jeffrey Gibson, Acting President of Barbados, and the Honourable Dale Marshall, Attorney General of Barbados, along with other dignitaries, retired service members, enlisted personnel, and parishioners, all gathered to honour the legacy and future
Brigadier Carlos Lovell, Chief of Staff, delivered a tribute to the brave men and women of the Force, both past and present, whose discipline, courage, and dedication have strengthened the nation’s security and resilience. “Without you,” he stated, “there would be no BDF to protect and safeguard our nation’s interests, nor any defence against the threats posed by an increasingly volatile global security environment.” While reflecting on nearly five decades of service, Brigadier Lovell emphasized the BDF’s contributions to national defence and enforcement, maritime security, cybersecurity, integrity verification, disaster response, and regional cooperation. These efforts include interdicting over a ton of illegal contraband and supporting police operations against various crimes and emerging threats.
The Force remains a steadfast guardian of Barbados’ sovereignty and social stability.
This Church Parade also looked to the future of the Barbados Defence Force. During the sermon and featured address, the evolving nature of global threats, such as climate change and cyberattacks, was recognized. The BDF's ambitious agenda to mitigate and address these threats was highlighted, including plans to upgrade maritime assets, enhance surveillance systems, integrate cybersecurity capabilities, and construct a state-of-the-art headquarters to improve operational effectiveness and the quality of life for service members.
The strategic partnerships of the BDF, which have helped achieve its mandate, were also acknowledged during the service. Collaborations with the Barbados Police Service, the Regional Security System, CDEMA, and international allies reflect a holistic approach to security and resilience.

“Our oath is not to self, nor to comfort... but to the people of Barbados, to our Constitution, and to the principles of justice and democracy.”

As the BDF moves steadily toward its 50th anniversary, Brigadier Lovell urged all members of the Force to wear their uniforms with honour, train with urgency, and be prepared to lead. “Let us stand as one, shoulder to shoulder, and commit with unwavering resolve to protect all that we cherish.”
