The historic St Ann’s Fort served as the vibrant setting for collaborative engagement as the Barbados Defence Force (BDF), in partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, conducted the Psychology of Leadership Course. St Ann’s Fort was transformed into a center of innovation and knowledge, attracting more than 30 defence and security professionals committed to exploring the principles of effective leadership.

Participants represented a diverse array of defence, security and para-military organizations including the Government of Barbados, The Barbados Police Service, Barbados Fire Service, Barbados Prison Service and the Customs and Excise Department. Regional participants included Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force, British Virgin Islands Police Service, Cayman Islands Defence Force, St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force, Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. This cross-sectional participation highlighted the immense value of collaboration in addressing common challenges across different sectors.

As articulated by Lt. Col. Julia DaBreo, leadership transcends the mere exertion of authority; it involves a profound understanding of individuals, the motivation of teams, and the adept navigation of challenges toward collective success. Her insights resonated with attendees, emphasizing, “this course is not solely about acquiring knowledge; it is about nurturing relationships, fostering dialogue, and constructing bridges among professionals from varied organizations and backgrounds.”

The initiative aimed not only to provide educational enrichment but also to cultivate deeper connections across borders and sectors.

The course’s curriculum integrated academic insights with practical applications, delving into complex subjects such as decision-making processes and team dynamics. Facilitator, Ms Charlotte Williams, from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst guided discussions, fostering an environment conducive to connection and dialogue. The atmosphere was characterized by unity and a shared sense of purpose, as professionals exchanged ideas, strategies, and future aspirations.

Ms. Kate Reynolds, Deputy British High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, underscored the significance of collaboration and development by stating, “This course reflects our collective commitment to enhancing professional development and reinforcing leadership within the defense and security sectors.” Her remarks echoed the values inherent to the initiative, highlighting the necessity of understanding human behavior as a means to advance resilience and progress.

“it

is about nurturing relationships, fostering dialogue, and constructing bridges among professionals from varied organizations and backgrounds.”

Upon conclusion, the course imparted a lasting impact that extended beyond the acquisition of leadership tools and techniques; it fostered connections and cultivated a sense of community among a diverse group of professionals.

Through this course, the Barbados Defence Force affirmed its dedication to excellence and innovation, positioning itself as a leader in leadership development within the region. Initiatives of this nature not only enhance the defense sector but also fortify the bonds between nations, equipping them to more effectively confront shared challenges.
