46th Anniversary Message to the Officers and Enlisted Ranks of

the Barbados Defence Force

46th Anniversary Message to the Officers and Enlisted Ranks of the Barbados Defence Force

Today, as we mark the 46th Anniversary of this illustrious Barbados Defence Force, we pause to honour the journey we have travelled together one defined by dedication, resilience, courage, and an unwavering commitment to service.

From our modest beginnings in 1979 to the modern, multifaceted force we are today, every milestone has been shaped by your hard work, professionalism, and sacrifice and by those who have gone before us.

Whether on land, at sea, in the cyber realm or in the air, we have stood guard over our nation’s sovereignty, safeguarded our communities, and lent helping hands in times of crisis. We are the guardians of Barbados’ peace, security, and dignity. Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary-General once famously said:

“More than ever in this age, the military must be guardians of peace and partners in development.”

My brothers and sisters in arms, I am here to say today that more than ever before, the BDF has been this country’s guardians of peace and partners in development, not just for Barbados but for the region. The examples of our contributions are myriad and our legacy of excellence is plain for all to see.

Our progress is visible in our expanding capabilities, in the trust we have earned at home and abroad, and in the countless lives touched by our service. But beyond the equipment and infrastructure, our greatest strength has always been and will always be our people. Each of you embodies the values of discipline, courage, and selfless service that have defined the BDF for nearly half a century.

As we look to the future, we do so with confidence. The world around us is changing, and with it, the nature of the challenges we face. Yet, I know that this Force will continue to adapt, modernize, and excel because our mission is not simply to protect the present, but to secure the future of Barbados for generations to come.

On this special day, I extend my deepest gratitude to every officer, warrant officer, non-commissioned officer, enlisted member and civilian staff member of the BDF past and present. You have written 46 years of exemplary history with courage, service, and pride. Now, together, let us write the next chapter with the same unwavering spirit. Let us continue to be Symbols of Excellence and rise to even higher heights as we march toward our 50th Anniversary.

Happy 46th Anniversary, Barbados Defence Force.
