1.5 IB Mission •
Mission and strategy
• Principios y estrategia
•
The IB is more than its educational programmes and certificates. At our heart we are motivated by a mission to create a better world through education.
•
We value our hard earned reputation for quality, for high standards and for pedagogical leadership. We achieve our goals by working with partners and by actively involving our stakeholders, particularly teachers.
•
We promote intercultural understanding and respect, not as an alternative to a sense of cultural and national identity, but as an essential part of life in the 21st century.
All of this is captured in our mission statement: The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

We had an excellent year in preschool as we have achieved our goal of developing our students socially, physically, and emotionally, fostering their full academic potential. In order to achieve this objective, we work closely with the Learning Support Department to provide help to the students who require special support in their cognitive, socio-emotional and psychomotor fields and/or have different learning rhythms or styles. At the beginning of every academic year diagnostic tests are given to students from P-J up to Transition in order to identify such needs and determine the action plan of the department.

We can see only a very small percentage of children in 1st grade (0.82) and in 2nd grade (0.89) who need reinforcement in the acquisition of Maths skills. The highest percentage (13.93) of students who are beginning to develop the skill is found in first grade and we consider this result as part of the process in the acquisition of new and more demanding competencies.
An average of 40% of the students are showing good progress in consolidating conceptual understandings and learning outcomes.
About 50% of the students are mastering the skills, which means teaching strategies are proving to be successful in constructing meaning, transferring meaning and understanding and applying concepts and skills.
An average of 5% of the students are beginning to develop skills in English and the number increases in fourth grade since students are expected to write fluently for a wide range of purposes and some still are struggling with the development of their linguistic competencies. In third and fourth grade about 45% of the students are showing good progress demonstrating growth in the acquisition of oral, written and visual communication.
In first and second grade a large number of students are mastering the skills in the acquisition of competencies in their mother tongue.
The highest percentage of students who need reinforcement (3.28) are in first grade which we interpret as a natural phase that some students embark on as they struggle a bit in compiling rules about the use of different aspects of the language.
An average of 15% of the students are beginning to develop the skill and as language teachers we have to make sure they are building on their previous experiences and can start using language to construct meaning. The percentage between shows good progress (approx. 40%) and masters the skill (42%) is very similar in the four levels which shows that most of the Primary students are receiving and constructing meaning in the additional language and are also creating and sharing meaning. These are good predictors and indicators in the process of acquiring the necessary skills to master a language.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of a PYP school and student, synthesizing the essential elements of the PYP and sharing them with the whole school community.
As a culminating experience it is an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile that have been developed throughout their engagement with the PYP. Students are required to engage in a collaborative, transdisciplinary inquiry process that involves them in identifying, investigating and offering solutions to real-life issues or problems. Fourth grade students have been working very hard in their PYP exhibition that will take place on the 6th of June. Transdiciplinary theme: How we express ourselves.

Accomplishments CCC 2012-13
Logros CCC 2012-2013
CCC has several important accomplishments in 2012-13. Perhaps the most important is the growth of service learning in school. This year teachers from every grade from prejardin to 9th Grade have planned service learning units with Mike Mackenna, the CCC director.
To show off the service learning work and other CCC projects, we created the CCC web page (ccctes.wordpress.com) and the CCC YouTube Channel to publicize our social responsibility projects. To formalize the role of CCC in school, we wrote the CCC policy, and received the approval of the Academic Council and the Student Council. We are going to finalize the approval process when we present the policy to the Consejo Directivo in April. Also, this year CCC opened up the possibilty of collaborating with other schools all over the world on service projects with the approval of our application to Round Square. Furthermore, CCC increased the importance of student leadership with the start of personal initiative projects in CAS, which now are a requirement for every student. These projects encourage the excellent work that our students have done with organizations like Techo, Fundación Corazones Unidos, and Ya Tengo Donde Escribir. CCC advanced student leadership even more with the grade level service projects, which 7th Grade has already done with Fundación Corazones Unidos, and 9th Grade with Funstall. 6th grade is in the process of planning a project with Asociación Vivamos. Besides the work that our students have done, parents and staff have played a key role in CCC this year. The parents have made several generous donations to various foundations, and one parent, Rafael Sanabria, helped us to establish a link with Asociación Vivamos. The staff organized the Solidarity Committee, which has helped six members of the TES staff that faced personal emergencies, and have participated in volunteer work with Techo, Asociación Vivamos, Fundación Mi Familia, and Fundacion Fenix.
68

11.5 CAS
11.5 CAS
We continue to support our students in CAS. During this time we have visited foundations to provided opportunities for “experiential learning”. The focus of our CAS programme is to provide opportunities to make our students conscienciously aware of all their skills and how they can constructively help others from their own, local or wider community.
That is why we continue to work with children, grandparents, people in rehab, and animals. We have also helped athletes in UNCOLI, participating as judges in the Mini Volleyball Festival. The Christmas season is a good opportunity for us to work together for a common purpose. We had a shared Christmas gift activity led by students in Grade 10. Students made their own gifts and gave them to a Foundation. Children from the Foundation spent the morning with us and had a lot of fun. We did not forget people in our own Community, including maintenance workers and general services staff. As usual, we had the opportunity to serve them and provide a special breakfast, and this was led by our 9th Grade students. In addtition Grade 10 students led a collection of Christmas Hampers to give out as gifts.
