LaunchedtheNeuroscienceResearchScholarsProgram Funded throughphilanthropicsupport,threeresearchscholarsparticipated ina12-weekprogramwheretheyengagedwithphysiciansatMiami NeuroscienceInstitutetoconductclinicalresearchandreviewpast andcurrentclinicaleffortstoanalyzeresultsandsuggest improvementsinclinicalpracticeinavarietyofdifferent subspecialtydisciplines.Thescholarswerematchedwitha researchmentorwithintheirareaofinterestandparticipatedin existingresearchstudies.
ActivatedaresearchstudyfocusingonAlzheimer’sdisease During thestudy,patientsundergoExablateMagneticResonanceGuided FocusedUltrasound(MRgFUS),aminimallyinvasivetreatmentthat usesfocusedultrasoundwavestoinducelocalizedandtemporary blood-brainbarrierdisruptioninpatientswithprobableAlzheimer’s disease.Exablateisusedwithanultrasoundcontrastagent (microscopicbubbles)wheretheenergycanbedirectedtoasmall regionandtemporarilydisrupttheblood-brainbarrier.Alzheimer’s researchisessentialforadvancingtheunderstandingofthe disease,developingeffectivetreatmentsand,inthelongrun, findingacure.

“ProphylacticRadiotherapyofMinimallySymptomaticSpinalDisease (PROMISSeD)”Thistrialaimstobetterunderstandwhetherradiationtherapy deliveredearlytoasymptomaticorminimallysymptomaticpatientswith high-riskspinemetastaseswillpreventorreducetheriskofdeveloping skeletal-relatedevents,suchaspathologicfractures,spinalcord compressionortheneedforotherinterventions.
“Dose-EscalatedSpineSbRTTrialforLocalizedMetastasisintheSpinal Column(DESSRT)”Thistrialisaclinicalstudythataimstotestanew treatmentregimenforpatientswithspinalmetastases Researchersare tryingtodeterminethefeasibilityandtolerabilityofadose-escalatedspine stereotacticradiosurgery(SSRS)forpatientswithlocalizedmetastasistothe spinalcolumn.ThestudywilltestanalternativetechniqueofdeliveringSSRS overfivetreatments,whichisexpectedtoreducethedoseofradiationper treatment.

OnAugust2,2023,aninstallationceremonywasheldtoawardthe IrmaBassEndowedChairinStrokeNeurologytoFelipeDeLosRios LaRosa,M.D.,acerebrovascularneurologistandthedirectorof strokecareatBaptistHealthMiamiNeuroscienceInstitute.Under theleadershipofDr.DeLosRiosLaRosa,thestrokeprogramat BaptistHealthBaptistHospitalhasundergonethreeJoint Commissionre-certificationsasaComprehensiveStrokeCenter.
ThisisoneoffourendowedchairscurrentlyheldattheInstituteand supportsDr DeLosRiosLaRosa’sworkinadvancingtreatment, trainingandresearchrelatedtostroke–thefifthleadingcauseof deathintheU.S.andtheleadingcauseoflong-termdisability, accordingtotheU.S.CentersforDiseaseControl&Prevention (CDC).FundsfromtheendowedchairwillhelpsupportDr.DeLos RiosLaRosa’sworkinclinicalstrokeresearch,aswellaspromote qualitystrokecare,improvestrokepatientoutcomesandeducate youngmedicaltraineesinstrokeneurology.
