BLOOD & MARROW TRANSPLANT
The Blood and Marrow Transplantation program at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute provides advanced treatment options to patients with blood cancers like leukemia, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Hodgkin disease, or Hodgkin lymphoma.
Bone marrow is the tissue inside our bones that produces red and white blood cells and platelets. For those diagnosed with a blood disorder, a bone marrow transplant, also known as a stem cell transplant, can be used to replace damaged blood cells with healthy, blood-forming stem cells.
HEMATOLOGIC ONCOLOGY
The hematologic malignancy specialists at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute have extensive experience diagnosing and treating blood disorders and blood cancers. They use the latest research findings, technological advances and breakthrough treatment therapies to offer the most advanced level of care. Along with the benefits of advanced medicine, Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute’s physicians work together with many other cancer specialists to provide a comprehensive, personalized care plan.
IMMUNOTHERAPY
Immunotherapy is an advanced cancer treatment that helps the body’s immune system fight cancer. It can be an effective way to treat blood disorders and is one of the most promising innovations available today for the treatment, cure and prevention of certain blood cancers like multiple myeloma, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and Hodgkin disease.
The cancer specialists at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute are among the world’s top leaders in developing this groundbreaking treatment. They collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts to provide comprehensive treatment solutions that work together to address all aspects of a patient’s diagnosis.
LUMINARY PHYSICIANS
After assembling nearly 120 leading cancer physicians and researchers, including luminary minds in Hematologic Oncology, Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Immunotherapy, Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute is bringing best-in -class treatments and diagnostic services to every patient.
Every day, Baptist Health physicians are constantly refining the most effective methods for integrating medications and procedures for each patient’s specific diagnosis, finding new treatments for those with extremely complicated cases and improving outcomes that give us all hope.
Through the leadership of Guenther Koehne , M . D . , Ph . D . , Deputy Director of Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute and Chief of the Hematologic Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program, the Institute is uncovering novel treatments for leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, multiple myeloma and other lymphoproliferative diseases, both with autologous and allogeneic blood and marrow transplantations
Treatments are becoming more sophisticated and every day we are learning more about how to target treatment to the individual. Using the most recent research, we move science forward, ultimately offering more options to patients and improving their

A NEW ERA IN RESEARCH
As clinical trials move forward and studies continue, physician scientists are gaining more insight into which patients respond better to immunotherapy versus chemotherapy . Guenther Koehne , M . D . ,
Ph . D . , understands that they cannot use a one-size-fits -all approach to care .
Stem cell transplants can be an effective form of treatment for blood cancers and some genetic conditions . The procedure is used to replace diseased or damaged stem cells, often after chemotherapy or radiation, with healthy cells The new stem cells can form a new immune system to help attack cancer cells head -on .
Baptist Health is actively pursuing clinical trails through its Blood and Marrow Transplant Processing Lab to bring the most innovative options to our patients, and to date, more than forty -five patients with a range of different diagnoses have participated in clinical trials at the lab
The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program marked its 100 th patient in February 2022 . From program inception to the end of this fiscal year, the program has treated 120 transplanted patients . The first transplanted patient reached three-year survival last year.

Hematologic Oncology
The hematologic malignancy specialists at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute use their latest research findings and technological advances to offer breakthrough therapies for the most innovative treatment and patient care .
Immunotherapy Treatment & Research
Immunotherapy is one of Miami Cancer Institute’s major development areas. This advanced cancer treatment helps boost the body’s immune system to fight cancer. Over the past decade, immunotherapies that enlist and strengthen the power of a patient’s immune system to attack tumor cells have evolved as a vast, new frontier against cancer, especially against various forms of lymphoma multiple myeloma and other blood cancers. Baptist Health maintains a focus on CAR T-cell therapies and new immunotherapy drugs to fight cancer cells.
A REVOLUTION IN PATIENT CARE
FOR BLOOD CANCERS & DISEASES
Baptist Health physicians carefully consider our patients’ conditions and specific needs to provide the most appropriate personalized treatment plan. Patient access combined with the latest research provide our patients with best-in-care solutions. This was true for Daymara Cano, a young mother with leukemia whose life was saved by a blood and marrow transplant.
Like most Saturday mornings for Ms Cano, June 5 , 2020 began with plans to have breakfast with her husband and their two young children before getting on with the weekend’s busy activities But when she collapsed trying to get out of bed, she knew something was seriously wrong . Her husband, Ronald, rushed her to the Baptist Health Baptist Hospital Emergency Department. After a variety of tests, Ms . Cano got news she never expected : she had acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a type of blood cancer
There would be no attending her son Adrian’s baseball tournament in Orlando in July, no painting with her daughter, Victoria. Instead, Ms . Cano was immediately admitted to the hospital to begin treatment for her life-threatening disease. AML can be aggressive, and within hours of arriving at the emergency room, Ms . Cano felt very ill. Doctors quickly began the chemotherapy regimen designed to put her into remission Fortunately, the chemo was effective in inducing a complete remission However, the care team at Baptist Health knew the disease would return without blood and marrow transplantation
Blood and marrow transplants are used to treat a variety of blood cancers as well as other blood diseases such as aplastic anemia and severe combined immune deficiency . What made Ms . Cano’s allogeneic blood marrow transplant successful was the groundbreaking work of Dr . Guenther Koehne , who developed a technique to manipulate donor cells prior to transplant to diminish the often harmful, and sometimes deadly, graft-versus -host disease complication
“As a result of the ability to remove the donor’s T lymphocytes in the laboratory prior to the stem cell transplantation, our patients don’t need to be treated with immunosuppressive drugs posttransplant,” says Dr. Koehne. “This eliminates the need to measure drug levels twice weekly at the least, not to mention that the drugs have side effects of their own.”
More than a year after her AML diagnosis, Ms . Cano experienced another day she will never forget. On October 5, 2021, surrounded by her family, she rang the bell at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, signifying the end of her treatment.
“It’s like a new beginning. I was given that chance. Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute is a blessing in my life. In the end, there is hope.”
