TheInstitutehelditssecondannualPrecisionOncology SymposiumonApril19-20,2024.Thesymposiumprovidedan importantoverviewandopportunitytolearnaboutthemost recentadvancesinthetreatmentofsolidtumors—including lungcancer,breastcancer,gastrointestinaltumors, genitourinarytumors,headandnecktumors,melanoma, sarcomasandbraintumors—bynoveltargetedagentsand treatmentcombinations.Philanthropicsupportallowed cliniciansandresearchersfromtheInstitutetoattendthe symposiumandgainaccesstovaluableeducationalcontent, enhancingtheirabilitytodelivercutting-edgecancer treatments.
PhilanthropyprovidedmembershipstotheAdvanced PractitionerSocietyforHematologyandOncology(APSHO)for severalAdvancedPracticeProviders(APPs)attheInstitute.It alsofundedaccesstoAPSHO’sCancerTherapyPrescribing Coursefor100APPs.Thiscomprehensive,self-pacedcourse includes19modulesdesignedtoequipAPPswiththe knowledgeandskillsneededtosafelyprescribecancer treatmentsandmanageoncologypatientsthroughouttheir carejourney.

Thankstophilanthropy,theInstituteacquiredadedicated syringepumpandshieldingboxforpluvicto(Lu-177)delivery –atargetedradiopharmaceuticaltherapyusedtotreat certaintypesofcancers.Sinceitslaunch,theInstitute’s pluvictoprogramhasgrownrapidly.Switchingfromgravitybasedinfusiontoasyringepumpallowsforfaster,more precisedelivery,increasingcapacitytotreatmorepatients eachweek.
Philanthropyfundedtheacquisitionofaflowcytometer,a laser-drivendevicedesignedtoexaminecellandparticle properties,supportingbothresearchinitiativesand investigator-ledclinicalstudies.Thisnewequipment suspendssamplesinfluid,directscellsindividuallythrougha laser,capturesfluorescenceandlightscatter,andstoresthe dataforanalysis.
PhilanthropyisenablingDNAFluorescenceImagingof Enzyme-SensitiveTargetedAssays(FIESTA)probeproduction attheInstitutetomeasureisolatedDNAdouble-strandbreaks withoutrepairmechanisms.IncollaborationwithFlorida InternationalUniversity’s(FIU)RobertStempelCollegeof PublicHealth&SocialWork,probeswillbemanufacturedat FIUusingInstituteprovidedmaterials.Oncevalidated,DNA FIESTAwillsupportresearchondamagemechanismsand protondoserateeffects,potentiallyinformingclinicaltrials.

PatientNavigationensurespatientsreceiveseamlesssupport throughouttheircancerjourneyatMiamiCancerInstitute. Nursenavigatorsassistwithscheduling,insurance coordination,transportationandemotionalsupport,helping patientsandfamiliescopewiththedifficultiesofacancer diagnosisandtreatment.Byofferingpersonalizedguidance, theseservices–whicharesupportedthroughphilanthropy–enhanceaccesstotreatmentandimproveoverallpatient outcomes.In2024,9,818uniquepatientswereimpactedby patientnavigationthrough42,818touchpoints.
TheArtsinMedicineProgramusescreativeexpressionasa therapeutictooltopromotehealingandemotionalwellbeing.Throughpainting,musicandmore,patientsengagein activitiesthatreducestress,provideanoutletforselfexpressionandfosterasenseofcommunityduringtheir treatment.YourgenerosityfullyfundedtheArtsinMedicine Programin2024,accountingfor61,483patienttouchpoints.
Forpatientsexperiencinghairlossduetocancertreatments, wigsofferawaytorestoreconfidence.Byprovidinghighqualitywigs,donorsarehelpingpatientsfeelmore comfortableandsupportedastheynavigatetheircancer journey.
TheAnnualPediatricHolidayPartybroughtjoyandholiday cheertopediatricpatientsundergoingtreatment.Withgifts, music,decorationsandspecialguests,theeventoffered patientsandtheirfamiliesabreakfromthechallengesof cancertreatment,helpingthemcelebratetheholidayseason withhappinessandhope.
TheChildLifeProgramattheInstituteprovidespediatric cancerpatientswithresourcessuchasbooks,gamesand toysthatofferdistractionandcomfortduringmedical treatments.Theseresourceshelpreduceanxietyandprovide opportunitiesforlearning,ensuringthatpediatricpatients remainengagedandemotionallysupportedthroughouttheir care.

MiaRios’journeythroughcancertreatmentatMiamiCancerInstitutehighlights theprofoundimpactofcompassionatecareintimesofadversity.FollowingMia's diagnosisin2017,hermother,Lisa,recallsthewarmthandempathythey encounteredattheInstitute.TheInstitute'sexceptionalmedicaltreatmentwas complementedbyunwaveringsupportandkindness,helpingMiaandherfamily throughaverydifficulttime.Mia’scareteamfosteredanurturingenvironment thatallowedMiatofocusonherhealing,reinforcingthefamily'sbeliefinthe importanceofatrulycompassionateapproachtohealthcare.

Withthesupportofourdonors,philanthropyisimpactingall facetsofresearchattheInstitute includingresearch associates,publishingfees,studyexpenses,medical equipmentandmore.In2024,56philanthropicallysupported clinicaltrialswereconductedinradiationoncology,medical oncology,surgicaloncologyandhematologyoncology;as wellaspediatric,breast,headandneck,gastrointestinal, genitourinary,gynecologicandlungcancers.
TheInstituteisfocusedonusingevidence-basedstrategiesto achievehealthequity.ThroughtheeffortsofourdonorsupportedCenterforEquityinCancerCare&Research (CECCR),theInstituteisbreakingdownbarrierstocareand addressingcancerdisparitiesinourcommunity.Philanthropy ishelpingsupportresearcheffortsandobjectivesthatfall undertheCECCRandasaresult,BlackandHispanic participationinclinicaltrialsattheInstituteincreased50% from2023to2024.

PowerExtraordinary:TheCampaignforBaptistHealthisahistoricfundraisinginitiativeby Baptist Health Foundation in support of Baptist Health, the largest not-for-profit healthcare organization in South Florida. The campaign aims to raise a record $600 million in philanthropic donations as an investment in the communities Baptist Health serves. The initiativewillsupporttheorganization’svisionofprovidingworld-class,compassionatehealth resources by pursuing a reimagined approach to patient care, a new era in research and clinical trials, a hub for the best minds in medicine and a globally recognized center for innovation.
