THE ARTS AT MIAMI CANCER INSTITUTE 2022
ENGAGING IN THE ARTS
The arts – music, visual, literary, design and dance – play an integral role in healing and promoting the well-being of patients, caregivers and staff in healthcare settings. Engaging in the arts may include enjoying a musical performance, listening to a vocalist, watching an artist paint, reading poetry or admiring a spectacular sculpture. Whether you engage actively or passively with the arts in healthcare settings, research has shown that these artistic interventions can improve health outcomes. Arts in medicine is a multidisciplinary field that is dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of individuals in diverse institutions while transforming the healthcare setting and providing an outlet for self-expression. Miami Cancer Institute’s Arts in Medicine program was developed to help patients harness the healing power of the arts to better cope with their illness and treatment. Clinical evidence shows that cancer patients who engage in the arts report significantly lower levels of stress, anxiety and nausea throughout their journey. The Institute’s Art and Design Collection features the works of dozens of visual and textile artists. A variety of art installations – including sculptures, paintings, quilts and handicrafts from all over the world – greet patients and visitors in the Institute’s lobbies, first floor and outdoor areas. Some works will change periodically, while others are part of the Institute’s permanent collection.

INNOVATIONS IN
TECHNOLOGY, ARCHITECTURE AND CANCER CARE No two cancer patients are alike, yet all can benefit from a healing environment that addresses their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. For Miami Cancer Institute, Baptist Health South Florida engaged ZGF Architects, in association with NELSON Worldwide Architects, to weave together innovations in technology, design and cancer care in creating uplifting, patient-centered spaces that contribute to a sense of community.
“The MCI patient advisory group had the highest level of input. They recognized that places where they normally get care are too traditional, so they wanted an open building with access to the outdoors,” says Barbara Kubasti, principal at ZGF.

STRENGTH
IN OUR HUMANITY Works of art can enhance the patient environment when carefully chosen and thoughtfully curated. Artworks lend comfort, beauty and wit to the environment. They promote innovation by challenging our ways of seeing. Above all, they assert the strength of our humanity in the face of sickness and misfortune. In 2022, the Helen and Jacob Shaham Gallery will host the first of a series of special exhibitions, which will change every two to three years. This first exhibition will feature a group of six large-scale paintings by the late Lynne Golob Gelfman, a highly respected abstract artist. Miami Cancer Institute endeavors to provide a museum-quality art experience for patients, visitors and personnel at our facilities. The Art and Design Program curators and advisors will select, and commission works of art every few years that complement the design aesthetic of the Institute’s public and clinical spaces for years to come.

CULTIVATING
A HEALING ENVIRONMENT The Artists in Residence Fellowship Program incorporates the visual and performing arts to help reduce stress, anxiety and the perception of pain all while providing restorative selfcoping skills and cultivating and nurturing a healing environment. This Artist in Residence fellowship fund will support visual artists and musicians, a dedicated art studio, mobile art cart, group drumming sessions, survivorship choir, movement therapy and creative writing courses. Artist in Residence Fellowship Program Annual Funding Need: $300,000 Guest artists provide passive and active engagements for patients, caregivers and staff in the waiting areas and lobbies to enhance the healthcare environment.
