Together We Can Drive Healthcare Forward What We Do The mission of Baptist Health Innovations, part of Baptist Health South Florida, is to engineer the future of healthcare by providing physicians and staff with world-class resources to turn great ideas into transformative products, devices, therapies, hospitals and services.

To further its mission, the organization has developed four innovation pillars that guide our activities. These pillars are technology management, applied research and education, corporate development and global programs. The achievement of specific goals within each of these pillars will drive healthcare innovation into the next generation and beyond.

Greenlight is the inner circle of friends, family and associates using philanthropy to inspire a culture of innovation throughout Baptist Health. This elite group of supporters plays a vital role in allowing our renowned physicians, clinicians and other creators to reach their goals and shape the future of patient care.

Our Successes Over the past few years, Baptist Health Innovations has developed a track record of success in healthcare innovation. These are a few of our accomplishments: Philips Partnership: We entered a memorandum of understanding and subsequent Master Research Collaboration Agreement with Philips, a global leader in healthcare solutions and consumer products. We anticipate multiple research and development projects under this agreement, potentially involving all operational units of Baptist Health. Collaborations with other commercial and not-for-profit institutions are also in development.

COTA Licensing: We negotiated two licenses with COTA, a healthcare technology firm with the aim of improving cancer care – the first for cancer data and a separate license for intellectual property regarding the means of analyzing treatment information for improved outcomes. Both licenses are royalty-bearing.

Subsequently, Baptist Health Innovations co-led a Series D Round capital investment in COTA. We will continue to strengthen our collaboration with COTA as the company uses real-world data to improve outcomes in cancer care and oncology drug development.

NAVCISE Call Center Algorithm: Baptist Health Innovations has completed a collaboration and license agreement with QurHealth Solutions, Inc. centering on the NAVCISE Call Center Algorithm, which was developed at the Miami Cancer Institute. NAVCISE incorporates the utilization of patient language identification to route calls.

Through the generous philanthropic support of a Baptist Health Foundation donor, Baptist Health Innovations is funding the creation of a NAVCISE prototype. This prototype, developed in partnership with QurHealth, will be tested and integrated into the Miami Cancer Institute call center. QurHealth will have approval to implement and license the NAVCISE technology to other institutions in the U.S. and elsewhere.

New Sports Helmet Design: After spending several years as an advisor on traumatic brain injury for the NFL, Michael McDermott, M.D., chief medical executive of Miami Neuroscience Institute, started developing a better helmet design, capitalizing on his knowledge of basic physics and the nature of head injuries in football. The helmet could also be utilized for other sports, such as car racing, motorcycle riding, hockey and lacrosse. The novel design of this helmet is very promising.

Knight Fellowship: Supporting the Thought Leaders of Tomorrow Thanks to the generous support of the Knight Foundation, Baptist Health Innovations has launched the Knight Foundation Fellowship for Healthcare Technology Innovation.

This competitive year-long fellowship is designed to attract, train and empower healthcare visionaries and entrepreneurs to develop a diverse and connected community of innovators at Baptist Health and in South Florida. The concepts, tools and network acquired by the fellows will lead to entrepreneurial and innovation activities that can benefit patients, providers and our community.

We have developed a dynamic program to provide education, training and need-based design principles. As part of this curriculum, our fellows apply multidisciplinary innovation tools to address real-world needs in healthcare – from managing a pandemic to improving medical access - via a team-based, experiential learning approach.

By the end of Phase 1, the program intends to develop more than 100 fellows who will be leaders of the new “knowledge economy” of South Florida. In addition, an “Innovation Challenge,” in which ideas can be submitted to compete for seed funding, will fuel implementation of these solutions.
