CHAIRMAN’S REPORT JOHN MURRAY, CHAIRMAN

As we emerge from the celebrations of Christmas, New Year and Lunar New Year, I am sure that everyone is back to their normal routine, concentrating on the challenges of the year ahead. The unfortunate events that unfolded, in Sydney and overseas, over the past months tested our community resolve, with emotions running high, but I have no doubt that our unique Australian community sprit prevailed and kept us together. Thanks to our members and patrons, in the lead up to Christmas and the New Year, the club enjoyed outstanding support, with more than 45,000 visits each week, as families and their friends used our facilities to socialise or to dine. This has encouraged us to look at the possibilities of one or two new dining options. In the months to come, I hope that I will be able to bring you some good news about our future plans. Incidentally, you may be interested to know that just prior to Christmas, Government health inspectors did the rounds of our kitchens and dining facilities. Following their visit the NSW Government Food Authority gave an “Excellent 5 Star” certification. This encouragement has helped motivate our chefs and staff to take a greater interest in maintaining our high standards of hygiene and cleanliness. I am pleased to say that after a considerable period of discussion and negotiation, Bankstown Sports Club, in partnership with Tucker Box Hotel Trust, the owner of 12

Travelodge hotels across Australia, will proceed with the development and expansion of the hotel above the club. This development is a significant $20 million investment in Bankstown. Tucker Box Hotel Trust is a joint venture between the NRMA and Mirvac Group and is managed by Mirvac. You will notice that a 75-metre high boom construction crane, one of the largest in Bankstown, has been positioned in our car park and work has begun on building four additional floors above the existing hotel. Initially 54 new rooms will be commissioned, on two floors, while Mirvac renovates all of the existing 108 rooms and provides for a new and dedicated reception lobby. This development has come about because the Travelodge is well patronised, with a relatively high rate of occupancy. These additional rooms will be of immediate help in meeting the everincreasing demand for hotel accommodation in the Bankstown CBD. Just before Christmas, director Doug Shedden, decided to retire from the board after 12 years of service to Bankstown Sports. Doug was appointed to the board in August 2002 and over the years has provided the club with invaluable support, advice and guidance. He also served this community as an East Ward Councillor, on Bankstown City Council, from 1979 until 1988. In 1987 he was appointed to State Parliament as the

Member for Bankstown, where he also made a significant contribution. Doug was appointed a director of Bankstown City Aged Care in November 2000 and retired in September 2009. From July 2001 until June 2008, Doug was Chairperson of the Board’s Fundraising Committee and over that period of time he helped raise over $3 million for the organisation. I might mention that Bankstown City Aged Care has been recognised for its quality of service and has been acknowledged as a national benchmark. The facility has seven different care facilities or villages. As supporters of Bankstown City Aged Care, we are proud of the fact that all the seven facilities received maximum scores possible when audited by the Government Agency responsible for accrediting 17,000 aged care facilities across Australia. We wish Doug well in his retirement. Doug’s contribution and friendship will be missed by the club, the other directors and me. In conclusion, we are spoilt for choice with the ICC Cricket World Cup in March, along with the start of the NRL season. The AFL season begins in April and the Autumn Racing Carnival will be in full swing. Why not come to the club with family and friends to enjoy these events in our Total Sports Bar or on our video screens around the club. You will be assured of excellent hospitality and an enjoyable, friendly atmosphere.

Sweetest Thing Delight in pure indulgence as La Piazza unveils a decadent Nutella Cake created from an Italian recipe passed down from father to son. In good times or bad the craving for something sweet to help us celebrate or commiserate cannot be ignored and it’s all because of chemistry. When we eat sugary foods dopamine is released in the brain triggering rewarding feelings like happiness. Though this sensation is short lived there’s no denying the enjoyment we get from consuming desserts, especially when in the company of family and friends and particularly on special occasions like Mother’s Day. The recent addition of a sumptuous Nutella Cake at La Piazza has got mouths watering and sweet tooths lining up to try it. The recipe was given to Stuzzichino Head Chef, Stefano Brombal, by his father while visiting Australia from the town of Treviso near Venice. “A lot of recipes are passed down through the families and each has their own secret recipe that they keep under lock and key,” he says. “For example there are lots of different variations to the most famous Italian dessert tiramisu. My dream was to become as good as him and make my father proud. In November 2014 my dream to become a head chef became reality as I was promoted to head chef of Stuzzichino in the beautiful surrounds of La Piazza.” The Nutella Cake can be purchased per slice from La Piazza with prices starting at $7.50 per slice. NUTELLA CAKE

20 minutes + 4 hours refrigeration INGREDIENTS: 250g Nice or Scotch Finger biscuits 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened 3/4 cup toasted hazelnuts 400g Nutella 500g mascarpone cheese 1/2 cup icing sugar, sifted METHOD: Line a 23cm round springform pan with baking paper and set aside. In a food processor place the biscuits and pulse a few times to make a rough crumb. Add into the bowl the butter, 1/3 cup of the toasted hazelnuts and 1 tablespoon of Nutella. Process until well combined. Press crumb evenly onto the pan and flatten using the base of a glass. Chill while making the topping. Using a mixer, beat the softened cream cheese with the remaining Nutella and icing sugar until well combined. Pour over chilled base and smooth top. Sprinkle remaining toasted hazelnuts over the top and chill for 3-4 hours. Serve straight from the fridge. Bankstown Sports InTouch

Our favourite wood chopping champion, David Foster, returns to the Club for a special Easter exhibition. Champion wood chopper David Foster is a familiar face at Bankstown Sports Club. The Tasmanian has made the Club and Travelodge Hotel Bankstown his Sydney base for more than ten years and this year he returns to showcase the skills that have made him a world champion and a member of the Australian team. “I have myself and two other axemen, Kevin

Williams from Victoria, the Victorian champion and Henry Maine from Tasmania, who is Tasmanian champion,” he says. “Last year we cut a block which was a power chop, which we call hard hitting, and then we had a competition where we raced each other. “So we’re doing that again this year but we’re going to do something a bit different – chainsaw sculpturing using a special electric chainsaw

which Kevin Williams will be doing. It’s probably the first time that’s happened in any club.” The Easter exhibition at the Club will not only give David the chance to “catch up with my old friends and new friends” but have some fun without the intense pressure of a competition. “I know I can’t dominate the sport like I used to,” he says. “The reason I’ve been so successful in my sporting career is I enjoy what I do. If you enjoy what you do, you’re going to be successful and that can be measured in many ways.

“As you get older it’s a lot harder work, let me tell you. I didn’t realise how hard it is to beat young people but I don’t have to prove anything. I’ve won 185 titles so 186 would be great but if I never win another world title I’ve got to look at my career and say ‘that’s been an unbelievable career’. “I think the way I look at it today is completely different from when I was 35. At 35 I still had the hunger and wanted to be breaking records and now at 58 I just enjoy the journey and if I can beat these young blokes on my day that’s a feather in my cap.” It’s clear David’s passion for wood chopping runs deep and is in the blood with his son also picking up the axe and winning a world championship following in the footsteps of many generations of Foster men. David counts his first world championship win in 1979 as one of his career highlights because it was the fulfilment of a dream, but in more recent years he’s particularly proud of winning two world titles despite having

MAKEOVER BEGINS Work to expand the Travelodge Hotel Bankstown to eight floors is now underway. The Travelodge Hotel Bankstown at Bankstown Sports Club is set for an exciting makeover with work already underway to boost the number of floors and hotel rooms after a $20 million agreement was signed.

A 75-metre high boom crane, one of the biggest to be seen in Bankstown in recent times, went up over the Club on the Valentine’s Day weekend as construction started on stage one. This involves adding an additional four floors on top of the original four floors and 108 hotel rooms.

Paynter Dixon is managing the development and construction work which is expected to be completed early next year. Club Chief Executive Officer, Mark Condi, says the development is much needed and an exciting investment for the community.

Once the first stage is complete, two of the new floors will have been fitted with 54 new rooms, bringing the total to 162. Existing guest room floors will also be refurbished and a new, modern dedicated hotel foyer and reception area created as part of the project.

“The existing Club building will grow to a total of 10 floors,” he explains. “The demand for additional rooms is evident as the Travelodge Hotel Bankstown is very well patronised. Our Club attracts more than 40,000 visitors a week, many of whom attend business conferences or major life celebrations here at the Club. With our more than 65,000 Club members, the demand for quality accommodation can only increase in the future. This is an exciting project that will galvanise our Club as a true community hub of Bankstown city.”

The development is a partnership between the Club and Tucker Box Hotel Trust, which owns 12 Travelodge Hotels across Australia.

Mother’s Day, Sunday 10 May will be a feast for all five senses beginning with a decadent high tea at Platform One. Sitting from 12.00pm to 2.00pm, the taste sensation comes with a glass of Moet and Chandon for adults on arrival, unlimited tea and one coffee per person.

The multi-platinum selling recording artist released the hugely popular The Swing Sessions and The Swing Sessions 2 albums in 2006 and 2007 respectively, and both hit the top ten. His other albums include Good Lovin’, David Campbell On Broadway and last year’s David Campbell Sings John Bucchino.

In celebration of Seniors Week, which runs from March 14 to 22, Ladies Bowls Club president Yvonne Dudek shares what life’s been like since joining Bankstown Sports Club in 1966. It’s the size of Bankstown Sports Club today compared to 50 years ago that impresses long-time member and Bankstown local Yvonne Dudek. She became a member in 1966 – the year when women could first join – and is amazed by how the Club continuously evolves. “Oh it’s changed enormously, hasn’t it? Every aspect of it is much, much bigger,” she says. “The club itself has just gone in leaps and bounds year after year. It changes all the time, it just keeps improving.” Yvonne was introduced to Bankstown Sports Club by her parents who were also members. They would meet up with friends for a meal on Friday nights and watch a concert in the auditorium on Sundays. When she retired from her role as a secretary in the aviation industry she joined the Ladies Bowls Club, which plays on Thursday mornings, and hasn’t looked back. “After I played for a few years I took on the secretary role and after that president. I enjoy the bowls and the social contact with the other ladies. Everybody’s happy, they’re all nice ladies, and we all seem to get along.”

The 75 year old not only stays active and healthy by playing bowls, she also likes to walk and go on holidays to visit friends on the north coast of New South Wales. In celebration of Seniors Week – March 14 to 22 – she’s encouraging others to take up bowls for socialising and exercise. However she says the biggest challenge, and one of the major changes to take place in society over the years, is many potential players are too busy. “It’s very hard these days as most retired ladies are looking after grandchildren because two parents have to work to pay the mortgage,” she explains. “Years ago when ladies retired they used to do something social like tennis or bowls but now they’re more or less looking after their grandchildren.” Keen to help out, Yvonne is enjoying her role as president of the Ladies Bowls Club. “I just like doing it for the ladies, organising the games and the activities for them. I don’t mind doing it, some people don’t want to be involved but I don’t mind doing it, it keeps your brain active doesn’t it?”

Bankstown Sports Club has stepped up its support for charity flight service Little Wings with Cash Housie Fundraising starting on 18 March. This coincides with the 12 month anniversary of the Club’s support for the initiative, which began around this time last year with sponsorship money. Little Wings helps ease the suffering of sick children living in rural and regional areas, as well as their families, by providing flights to and from treatment in Sydney. Instead of exhausting car rides and longer hospital stays, Little Wings gets kids home to their loved ones faster, reduces travel fatigue and eases the financial pressure of long distance travel. According to Kevin Robinson, Little Wings Chief Executive Officer, the service also benefits people living closer to the city as it frees up beds because children from outside Sydney aren’t staying in hospital as long.

“It wasn’t thought about in the beginning,

we were just thinking about the country kids, but part of the success of Little Wings has actually come from freeing up the resources. Kids would normally stay here for two to three weeks from the country for the treatment process but now they’re in and back in five days so those bed spaces are now helping kids in the city,” he says. Kevin’s long term goal is to take Little Wings nationwide but for now he is focusing on growing the New South Wales charity from about 30 flights in 2011, its first year of operation, to potentially 400–1,000 flights this year as funding permits. Club members and visitors taking part in Cash Housie will have fun as they try to win fantastic cash prizes while knowing 100 per cent of the profits will go towards the fuel and maintenance of Little Wings’ planes – the pilots are volunteers. Caffeine dreams As cafés boom and coffee machines become a home and office staple, it’s clear Australia’s obsession with coffee is only going to get stronger. If it wasn’t for dancing goats, we might never have experienced the decadent thrill of what has arguably become Australia’s favourite beverage, coffee. According to the myth, an Ethiopian goat herder discovered the stimulating benefits of coffee around 600 to 800 AD when his goats became jumpy and frisky after eating a particular berry. The word spread to monks at a nearby monastery where they brewed the seeds of the plant in water and used the drink to help stay awake during long night prayers. Today, busy workers and parents are the ones using coffee to fight fatigue. Roy Morgan Research released in 2014 shows those who work more than 60 hours a week consume 10.1 cups a week compared to 8.8 for workers doing 35-39 hour weeks, while mums and dads drink an average of two more cups a week than people without kids. The number of Australians owning coffee machines is also growing but it’s not having any impact on café visits, which are also on the rise. Going out for a coffee has become a popular social activity and even a hobby as we search not only for that perfect blend but fantastic food experiences as well. Finding a favourite café is becoming increasingly difficult with coffee shops popping up everywhere. IBISWorld states

that this industry has grown 3% a year for the past five years. It expects independent coffee shops will continue to grow in the future, impacting chain coffee stores and even take-away outlets, by providing meal and snack options for when busy people rush in for their caffeine hit. It’s a far cry from the early days of coffee trading, which started in Yemen in the 16th century and spread to other areas of the Middle East, before Venetian merchants brought the delicacy to Western Europe. But the Dutch are believed to be responsible for taking coffee global by setting up plantations in their South-East Asian colonies. As for Australia, coffee came with the convicts on the First Fleet in 1788. However it was more than 150 years before the quality got anywhere close to what we enjoy today when European migrants from countries such as Italy and Greece arrived in Australia in the 1950s. Melbourne is thought to have embraced the café culture early on while Sydney took a little longer with coffee more known for being in department stores. The Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale tells the story of best friends Kai and Gerda. When slivers of a shattered magic mirror lodge in Kai’s heart, he becomes mean and is carried away to the Snow Queen’s palace. Gerda must rescue Kai and help him find his true self again. Also for the children is the Kids Pop Fever concert, Wednesday 15 April, featuring tributes to the latest pop stars with songs by Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Arianna Grande, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, or there’s the interactive family fun of Drumstruck on Sunday 19 April. Full of African beats and explosive energy, every audience member will be provided with a drum to play along with the performers on stage.

Popular Australian entertainer David Campbell will bring some old school style for Mother’s Day on Sunday 10 May while iconic musician Ian Moss will share his distinctive vocals and soulful music on Sunday 17 May. For those after something a bit more classical, leading lady of musical theatre Marina Prior will share the stage with the Australian Tenors on Saturday 23 May. Tribute shows in June pay respects to two iconic bands. First up on Saturday 6 June is California Dreaming – The Music of The Mamas and The Papas, a sizzling band and four of Australia’s hottest musical theatre talents will take you back in time to the flowerpower movement. How did you begin your singing career? Were you discovered – or did you come to singing some other way? I was a university music student and working as a busker in Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall. A group of us saw an ad in the newspaper for auditions for the chorus of a new Broadway version of The Pirates of Penzance that was coming to Australia. We all dared each other to go along. I had never done a professional audition before. I ended up getting the lead role of Mabel alongside June Bronhill, Simon Gallaher, Jon English and David Atkins. A favourite of Australian audiences, this wonderful soprano and stage actress has been performing since she won a starring role opposite Anthony Warlow in the Phantom of the Opera in the early 1990s. She’s appeared in Cats, The Pirates of Penzance, The Secret Garden and Mary Poppins productions and has just been cast to play alongside Jane Turner in the West End hit Mr Jumpy. We asked Marina about her life and career: Tell us about the show and what the audience can expect? The show will be a feast of musical theatre songs, opera, folk and pop classics. How do you prepare for a show – do you do anything in particular to ensure your voice is in top shape? I go for a run in the afternoon before a show to get my body and lungs warmed up, then

I am most proud of breaking away from the straight heroine roles and branching into comedic and character roles. It is very easy to become pigeon-holed in this country, and I like to challenge people’s perceptions of who I am and what I can do. You have performed all over the world, where is your favourite place? Australia, of course! How do you find Australian audiences compared to others? LUNCH FOR TWO The Chinese are noted for their family spirit and the Imperial Jade Palace is the perfect atmosphere for sharing food, talk and friendship, writes Sue Nelson. My oldest friend and I had not caught up since before Christmas and so much had happened since then that we needed a good long lunch to explore all the topics: family, holidays, gifts, gossip and world events. There’s no better place to unwind and share than Imperial Jade Palace. The menu is as varied and colourful as our lives and we settled in happily to sample all the fine offerings amid the young families and businessmen gathered on this sweltering summer’s day. The duck had been recommended to us, so we started with the pancakes with their shallots and hoi sin sauce. The crispy skin and flesh was juicy and just right, but we misread the menu and ended up with unexpected, but in a good way, san choy bow – the traditional chopped vegetable and meat dish served in a lettuce leaf. Ah well, we loosened our belts a notch and went with the flow. Lunch is great at Imperial Jade Palace because you can choose from the Yum Cha menu or the usual a-la-carte. We chose pork and prawn dumplings (Siu Mai), which were hot and tasty. For our mains, we went for a mixture of typical Chinese cuisine and not so typical – fried rice, mixed vegetables with oyster sauce

– and then two gorgeous dishes: sizzling lamb fillet with Japanese teriyaki sauce and deep-fried scallops in spicy salt and chilli. The lamb was scrumptious – very tender with an amazing burst of near-BBQ flavour; while the scallops were an inventive twist on the usual salt and pepper squid. The batter was light, while the chilli added a hint of warmth. The spices perfectly complemented the creaminess of the scallops to make the whole thing pop in the mouth.

Jasmine tea topped it all off and made a great palette cleanser. The Imperial Jade’s sumptuous surroundings and friendly, efficient waiters ensured our lunch time catch up was leisurely and fun. As we exchanged goodbyes I looked across to the restaurant’s large tanks. Like the air bubbles in the tank, my mind was forming a thought bubble of its own: ‘Next time I must try the fresh lobster’. Time to schedule our next lunch!

The Yellow study also found younger groups are tending to move towards visual social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, which is now owned by Facebook. Instagram is a photo sharing app and site that provides quick and easy photo editing tools to make even the most unskilled photographer’s pictures look professional. MAKING a difference Bankstown Bowls will once again do its bit to support the families of those killed or injured during their time in the Defence Force with an Anzac Day fundraiser. On Anzac Day our thoughts are usually with those who have lost their lives serving for Australia in wars and conflicts but Bankstown Bowls is ensuring we never forget the veterans, widows and their families by supporting the charity Legacy with a fundraising event. Held on Sunday 26 April, the day after Anzac Day and the centenary of Australian troops landing at Gallipoli, the social mixed bowls day will involve a lunch, raffle and of course, bowls. The money raised from the raffle and the entry fee of $100 per team will be donated to Bankstown Legacy. The event started two years ago and was an idea from Bankstown Sports Club President John Murray. This year Bankstown Bowls and the Men’s Bowling Club are hoping to raise close to $3,000 and want to see more people participate, particularly family groups. “It’s not so much about winning, it’s about getting involved,” says Men’s Bowling Club President Rob Milton. “It’s not a competition

like a lot of our bowls events are, this is a day where people get together. The idea is not to beat someone but to play a few games and have a bit of fun, just the camaraderie of being with like minded people, it’s a day of remembrance but along the way we’re helping people.” There are more than 700 people supported by Legacy in the Bankstown area including World War II widows. Legacy helps by providing medical, transport, financial and counselling services where needed as well as organising holidays and gatherings to prevent social isolation. “Bankstown Legacy is very grateful for the support of both the bowls club and the sports club,” explains Alan Rawlinson, Bankstown Division Legacy chairman. “Legacy receives no government support to assist our widows, children and people with a disability so relies on the public who continue to give generously. The Bowls Days have made a huge difference

They love working as part of a dedicated, professional team but they also like to work for our members and guests by making all our clubs the best they can be. Tom Wyskiel first started working casually for the club as a student 15 years ago. He liked the people around him so much, the environment and the members he served, that he decided to make his job at the club into a career. After a 4 year stint as Venue Manager at Bankstown Bowls Club he’s recently been promoted to Venue Manager of Baulkham Hills Sports. With Tom’s promotion, Vince Bruning has

been promoted from his position of Duty Manager at Bankstown Sports to Venue Manager at Bankstown Sports Bowls. “After 24 years at the club I’m really excited to be taking on a new role at the bowling club,” says Vince. “It’s a small, friendly club with great staff who look after our guests and make it a great place to visit.” Tom’s move was made possible by the appointment of Huw Bennett from Venue Manager at Baulkham Hills Sports to Senior Duty Manager at Bankstown Sports. Another of our long-serving staff members is Venue Manager at Birrong Sports, David Hills.

BIRRONG SPORTS FRIENDS FOR LIFE No matter how busy you are, there’s a way to make lawn bowls a part of your social calendar thanks to Birrong Bowls Club. Affordable, low impact and fun, lawn bowls at Birrong Sports Club is perfect for winding down at the end of a hard day’s work, for socialising and igniting your competitive spirit. “I started playing quite a few years ago to have a sport and a bit of an outlet after work,” says Allan Cain, Birrong Bowls Club organiser. “We’d go and have a few drinks and have a game of bowls – it was a relaxing afternoon and from then on I played in competitions and I’ve been playing bowls for about 30 years. “It’s rather inexpensive – our fees are $60 a year and you have to be a member of Bankstown Sports Club plus we charge $6 a game which lasts about three hours. So, for a very modest fee, you can have three or four hours of entertainment and a bit

of exercise whereas golf and all those other games are much more expensive than that.” With players ranging from 20 to 90 years of age and sessions on most days of the week, the game is known for inspiring long-lasting friendships. This year, five Birrong bowls couples will go on a cruise together because they’ve formed such a strong bond. “We’re always looking for new players,” Allan says. While lawn bowls has a stereotype as an older person’s sport, Allan explains that most of the top players in New South Wales are under 30. If that’s not enough to inspire fresh blood, a new version of lawn bowls, inspired by the success of faster format games such as Twenty20 cricket, is now being trialled.

“Bowls Australia has just introduced a new ‘Jack Attack’, a shorter version of the game, where it takes only a few hours to play and that’s something people have said about lots of sports – you need to get the game over and done with in a couple of hours so you don’t rob the family of their time.” Whatever time you do decide to spend on the green, the strong friendships and fun atmosphere will ensure it will be time well spent.

As the weather starts to cool, we feel the urge to hibernate at home but the lure of comfort food from family-friendly restaurant, The Gallery at Baulkham Hills Sports Club, is worth braving the chill for. Heading into autumn you’ll find more slow-cooked hearty dishes on offer featuring richer, earthy flavours. There’ll be meals like Beef ‘n Guinness Pie, Coq au Vin and Vietnamese style stews. While The Gallery Restaurant produces about 2,500 to 3,000 meals a week, the most popular is the classic chicken schnitzel, which is served with vegetables or chips and salad. They also get ice cream with topping and a complimentary colouring-in pack to keep them busy. “We have a wide range of patrons in terms of both age and background,” says Executive Chef, Helmut Gundendorfer. “Our patrons differ enormously in age and preferences between lunch and dinner so the menu caters to a lot of people. Our specials help us achieve this.” “Our menu reflects modern palettes through having a combination of many influences including a lot of South-East Asian (Thai, Vietnamese), Italian and French styled dishes along with the usual club favourites.” The Gallery Restaurant also caters for special dietary requirements with gluten-free and vegetarian dishes. Bankstown Sports Club’s new Community Sports Officer Alex Clarke, represented the club at this year’s Cole Classic ocean swim, raising money for the charity Little Wings. The Club has been a strong supporter of the charity, which flies children in remote areas to and from Bankstown Airport so that they can attend city hospitals for treatment. Alex won the 2km event in a time of 24 minutes!

Alex, who was born and raised in Bankstown, started competitive swimming at age 10 at Bankstown Sports Swimming Club. He went on to win the national butterfly title at age 15 and was selected to represent Australia at the World School Games in Qatar in 2009, when he was in Year 12. He is a volunteer with Elouera Surf Life Saving Club and Cronulla Swim Club, having coached a number of juniors ranging in age from 9–14 years.

Staff from Bankstown Sports Club and the community donated money to support Alex’s quest and also supported him on the day by attending the Cole Classic and wearing Little Wings attire. The Club itself kicked off donations with a pledge of $5,000 and will continue to match donations until the end of March. Alex hopes to raise $25,000. JUNIOR TALENT UNEARTHED AT VELODROME It’s an exciting year for Bankstown Sports Cycling Club with a boom in junior membership, which increased by about 66 per cent on the previous season, thanks to a big recruitment drive through recreational sports like BMX riding. Bankstown Sports Club has actively helped assist juniors grow within the sport. The Christmas Track Classic event for 2014 was held at the Dunc Gray Velodrome in Bass Hill and attracted 120 juniors from across New South Wales. World Masters medallists also competed in the senior section of the competition, which was a thrill to watch as cyclists can reach speeds of up to 96km an hour. LADIES GOLFERS A ‘FLUTTER’ WITH TALENT Bankstown Sports Ladies Golf Club continues to thrive as it enters its 52nd year of competition. Known for wearing canary yellow shirts when they hit the green every Tuesday morning at Sefton Golf Course, the club has come a long way since the first meeting was held in December 1963. Bankstown Sports Club, where the ladies first met before heading to the golf course, offered its support from 1964 to help the Golf Club get started.
