Greetings Everyone,

What a delightful term it has been as we move further into the endemic. As Head of School, I have had a permanent smile on my face all term as students have slowly taken their masks off and boarded buses to attend their Residential Visit. I have seen proud school community members celebrate their culture at International Day and I have observed students back in the classroom sharing their open mask free emotions with their beloved teachers and classmates. Covid-19 really hit us all so very hard and what a reward it is to head back to normal daily school life.

I recently had the pleasure of talking with a parent whose younger child was admiring the carp swimming in the Sala Pond. I made a comment of how nice it was to see so many dads picking up their kids after school as in my day it was a very rare occurrence indeed. He looked up at me and said how much his child loved the school, but he said it is so different these days. I asked him what was so different, and he said, “Well, in my day you never ever admitted when you got something wrong but my daughter tells me that mistakes are celebrated in her class.”

We chatted on how the research clearly confirms that actually as human beings we learn best from breaking down our mistakes, being transparent and honest that we all make mistakes and errors even the teachers role model it when they get something wrong!

When we do make a mistake, we openly look at strategies to

improve. Whereas with the parent and my schooling experience, the mistake was hidden and there was a missed learning opportunity to highlight it, break it down and make the required correction.

“It is so powerful for our students if we can demonstrate that failing is a universal and valuable experience that helps us to grow!”

It took Sir James Dyson 5,127 prototypes of his revolutionary vacuum cleaner before he got it right! He claims he had 5,126 failures, but he learned from each one.

“You are just as likely to solve a problem by being unconventional and determined as being brilliant. We’re taught to do things the right way. But if you want to discover something that other people haven’t, you need to do things the wrong way... Watching why that fails can take you on a completely different path. It’s exciting, actually!”

The Classroom is a Different Place These Days!

During my 40 years in education, I can think of numerous occasions where students have had to try, try, and try again. I love the fact that in mathematics classes now, the wrong mathematical problem is showcased on the screen, broken down and reconstructed to glean common understanding. Of course, in sport, music and drama, mistakes are always so glaringly obvious. The number of times I have heard the likes of; “I’m never going to hit a fast serve in tennis, pass my grade 6 piano exam or learn the 1,000 lines in the upcoming Shakespeare play.” But with all the tennis balls in the net, the wrong keyboard notes and the forgotten lines, scaffolds develop and gradually support the student as they head to mastery.

We are all human beings not robots and at Bangkok Patana we show the human side of celebrating learning from our mistakes, there is no more hiding. The school should always hum. It should beat to the drum of the real world. It should show its students what the world is and usher them into real life experiences that make them the giants of the future. It should celebrate 5,126 prototypes, and the relentless spirit that eventually gets it right the 5,127th time. Long may Bangkok Patana pulsate with action.

Wishing you all a safe and joyful festive season here in the wonderful Kingdom of Thailand or wherever you are travelling to around the world.

Patana pAge-turners

Welcome to your monthly round up of reading recommendations. This month’s theme…Family!

INTERVIEW WITH KEIR TYRRELL, FS2A:

1. What is one of your fondest or most favourite reading memories?

Reading ‘lift the flap’ books at home. It’s exciting to see what’s underneath the flap, I like the surprise.

2. Which fictional character would most like/least like to meet in real life and why?

Superworm because he is super-long and super-strong! And he defeats the wizard lizard.

3. What does family mean to you? Do you have any book suggestions for this theme?

Family means spending time with mummy, daddy and my sister. It’s also when I visit family in England and stay with them. Sometimes animals can be family too, like pets. My book suggestion is Stick Man by Julia Donaldson. Stick Man wants to get home to his family but lots of things happen along the way. My favourite part is when the dog thinks Stick Man is a stick to play with and runs away with him! And when Stick Man helps Father Christmas.

FS AND KEY STAGE 1 BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS:

Mrs Tyrrell, Secondary English Teacher:

Franklin and Luna Go to the Moon by Jen Campbell. Luna’s best friend is a dragon called Franklin. He is 605 years old and hasn’t seen his family for a very long time! Luna and Franklin work together to try to find Franklin’s dragon family and they see some magical things along the way. This beautifully illustrated book is brilliant for inspiring imaginative talk in young children.

And Tango Makes Three by Peter Parnell. Based on the true story of two male penguins who create a family together in New York’s Central Park zoo. This is a heartwarming read that teaches about love, family and diversity.

Ninja Boy’s Secret by Tina Schneider. Ninja Boy wants to make his Dad proud but he has a secret - he loves to play the violin. Instead of following in his Dad’s footsteps, he wants to enjoy and celebrate his passion for music. This brave story teaches about the importance of being true to yourself.

KEY STAGE 2 BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS:

Tehya, 5A:

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett: Mary Lennox finds a whole new world behind the walls of the secret garden. Being part of a troubled family, Mary finds solace within these hidden walls. Will Mary find what she is looking for in the garden of her dreams?

Amy, 5A:

Tua and the Elephant by R P Harris: Join Tua and her elephant (Phon Phon) on this wonderful adventure. Will Tua be able to live a normal life with such a gigantic creature following by her side? Fighting off people who want to thieve and harm Phon Phon, Tua uses the strength of her will and

6 Bangkok Patana School News 09/12/2022

her family’s support to find a safe forever home for this wonderful creature.

Chloe, 5A:

City Spies by James Ponti : A man called “Mother’ is no ordinary person: he’s a spy! Exploring the world and completing missions is his goal in life. Mother recruits children from all over the world to join his spy family. They’ll soon become legendary top spies themselves just like him! Join them on an adventure of a lifetime!

KEY STAGE 3 BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

Indian values and modern love. It incorporates two well-intentioned families plotting to bring their children closer together, and how Dimple is completely opposed to the idea of an arranged marriage, despite all odds finds herself falling for Rishi.

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan is an incredibly funny debut novel.. It tells the story of an outrageously, rich Singapore-based Chinese family. This is a story of family expectations as a normal girl navigates a world completely out of her comfort zone. Although she has the support of her mother, her best friend, and most of Nick’s cousins, how will she manage to appease Eleanor, Nick’s formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should and should not marry?

Pasit (Max), 7C

The Wings of Fire Series by Tui T Sutherland. Five dragons escape the cave that was meant to protect them from the outside world. I chose this series because although they are not real family, they are good friends that help each other in hard times.

Iqbal by Francesco D’Adamo. I chose this book about Iqbal Masih because it talks about this group of children who have gone into child labour to pay off their family debts. The children help each other in difficult times and Iqbal helps them to escape from the carpet factory.

The 1,000-Year-Old Boy by Ross Welford. This is a fun book…

KEY STAGE 4 AND 5 BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS:

Kangna, 11L

When Dimple Met Rishil by Sandhya Menon. This book follows the story of Dimple Shah a recently graduated tech wizz who does not wish to get married, and Rishi Patel, a hopeless romantic, and the perfect family man. This book is a perfect example of the clash and conflict between traditional

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, set in the regency era, is a book centred around the concept of looking past your pride and preconceived notions and to see the good in people. The story is a dramatic series of emotions, and family rattles, whilst breaking down the class-conscious rules and finding love. The main character is a strong willed young woman named Elizabeth Bennet, who struggles to find a compatible husband for herself. The story throws multiple obstacles her way, but the biggest one being her own lack of knowledge about herself. Although Elizabeth, sometimes serving as the villain to her own story, who’s stubbornness and inability to understand the growing affection between her and Mr Darcy. But the best part of the book is that even after being 200 years old, the language and story of the book never feels too outdated or hard to read. I recommend you give it a read!

Stay tuned in future Patana News issues for more Patana Page-Turners, as recommended by our staff and students.

Recently our IB Sports Exercise Health Science (SEHS) students have been studying nutritional science. This applied unit of learning has seen the students attend a lecture on the science of weight loss with the Surfing Scientist Ruben Meerman and chat online with Champion Marathon Swimmer Andy Donaldson about the realities of staying hydrated and well fuelled during a channel crossing. Last Friday the group put themselves to the test during the SEHS Masterchef Challenge. In pairs, the class were given THB 500 and 10 minutes in Villa Market in order to procure ingredients to prepare a meal that was:

•Quick to prepare for a busy athlete;

•Affordable for a young aspiring athlete who has not yet turned professional;

•Healthy and filling;

•Tasty;

•The right combination of macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein and lipids) for an athlete in heavy training.

There was a frenzy in the supermarket aisles as students worked out if they could afford the supplied they needed to ensure a tasty and healthy dish. Deals were done and pleas were made. Once we had filled our shopping bags it was back to the Bangkok Patana Masterchef Kitchen to prep the meals. 40 minutes was allowed to prep and plate up the perfect dish. There were a range of fantastic dishes including: Breakfast Bagels, Tacos, Teriyaki Chicken Stir Fry, Pasta and Wraps. The food looked and tasted delicious – the judges would have a tough time on their hands!

Every year we recognise and celebrate those Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel learners around the world who have demonstrated academic excellence at the very highest levels in their exam performance. The Cambridge and Pearson Outstanding Learner Awards are presented to those learners in each exam series who have achieved the highest subject mark in their country, in the region, and around the world. These awards are presented to the learners with the highest marks and highest grades in their subject in each exam series. By winning one of these awards, a learner has competed against thousands of other learners who have taken the same subject in their country and globally. If one or more learners receive the same highest score for their exam, each of these learners will receive an award.

Minimum entry thresholds are set for each qualification suite (excluding UK entries) to ensure that award-winning learners are selected from a sufficiently representative group of learners taking the same exam where relevant.

If the number of entries for a particular subject within an exam series does not meet the minimum threshold for entries in a given series, learners will not be awarded for that subject.

Thank you for all the One Green Christmas Goals shared this week! What an amazing array of ways to keep sustainability at the top of our Christmas lists.

HERE ARE JUST A FEW WONDERFUL SUGGESTIONS TO MAKE THIS A TRULY GREEN CHRISTMAS:

•Reuse Christmas decorations

Brian Taylor

•Save ribbons and bows through the year to reuse on Christmas gifts

Ning Burr

•Give vintage gifts rather than buy new ones Emma Willinger

•Give World Vision donation vouchers as gifts. https://donate.worldvision.org/giftcatalog Cindy Adair

•Separate your waste; reuse gift labels and cards Stephen Murgatroyd

•Find innovative ways to give Christmas gifts using jars and bags you already have at home Cheryl Rego

•Invest in a reusable Advent Calendar Julie Kelly

•Eat all your Brussel sprouts and try to waste less food! Robine Johnson

•Consider donating to charity instead of sending Christmas cards

We would like to extend our gratitude to all who donated blankets for the people of Nan province. It was a very successful campaign and will be greatly appreciated through the cold winter months!

The annual Patana Marine Conservation Group (PMCG) beach and reef clean-up trip took place on 27th November 2022. Sixteen eager student members accompanied by three supportive teachers met at school at 6am and headed to Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya by school minibus where we boarded our boat and sailed to Koh Larn. The group then divided into snorkeling and diving teams, supported by Jomtien Dive Centre (No Limits) staff. Although the main objective of the day was to collect discarded plastic rubbish from the ocean, we were thrilled to explore the vibrant marine life all around us. I was personally delighted to watch a curious turtle (pictured) which was photographed by one of the students using the PMCG’s underwater camera. Diving was a great team building experience, with the more experienced divers buddying up with others with less experience. The snorkelers also worked in groups, removing rubbish and debris (mostly single use plastic) from the shallows and the beach. Sadly, this was a huge task as the beach we swam to was covered in rubbish. After a quick lunch on board the boat, we had a short break before our second diving/snorkeling session where we managed to find and remove more rubbish from the ocean, beach and shallows.

This was a really successful and satisfying trip which enabled us to reflect on the positive impact we, the PMCG, made on just one day. However, it also highlighted the negative impact us humans have on our wonderful marine eco-systems. The mission of the PMCG is to raise awareness of the importance of caring for and protecting our marine environments. We must ALL try harder to keep our plastic usage to an absolute minimum by refusing to use plastic straws and single use plastic cups. Every small action makes a difference! If you are interested in joining the Patana Marine Conservation Group, then please come along to our meetings which happen on Thursday

lunch times in SEC 203. We always welcome new members and are already discussing our next beach and reef clean-up trip!

Many thanks to Ms Brown, Mr Stewart and Ms Smith who very kindly gave up their whole Sunday to accompany us on the trip.

Here are some comments from us about the trip:

“This was a fun, action-packed, hands-on day which I will always remember. Seeing the turtle was such a highlight for me! I’m so proud that, as a team, we removed much rubbish from the sea making his environment a little safer” –

Aran

“I was very impressed by the enthusiasm and engagement from all the students on the trip. They worked well as a team and I think they gained a greater appreciation of just some of the consequences of single-use plastics being so prevalent in our society.” – Mr Stewart

“I found this whole excursion to be a very nerve-calming time knowing that I and a lot of other people made a difference even though it wasn't that big.” - Kai

“It was great to finally go on a trip after Covid and feel like you’ve made a small difference”

- Elio

“I am a fairly new diver and a new member to PMCG. Before leaving I felt a little nervous about the dive but I’m so happy I did it as it was such an amazing experiacne and everyone on trip were so kind and welcoming.” - Niamh

life oBservaTion in Fine Arts

Life drawing from the nude model is a traditional sketching skill that has been part of young aspiring artists’ education since the 16th Century. Many art schools and creative Higher Education institutions expect to see it in applicants’ portfolios. Many practising artists credit life drawing as one of the practices that dramatically improved their sketching skills.

Through November, Year 12 and Year 13 had the opportunity to participate in Life drawing classes for the first time at Bangkok Patana School. Students were excited about the opportunity to improve their observational sketching skills and practise some skills that will be useful to them in their IB Process Portfolios and university applications for creative courses. The sessions were taught, and students learnt the basics of sketching the human form using proportion and measuring, before experimenting with gestural sketching and adding tonal values and shading to their work. In the third session, Khun Phupa, a classically trained artist, who now uses expressive techniques, joined us from Baan Kang Wat in Chiang Mai to model for the students how to use paint to develop their sketches into pieces that can form part of their assessed Exhibition. The students learnt a lot from the way Khun Phupa was able to use colour and paint sketching techniques to depict the human form quickly and were able to produce some high-quality paintings of their own.

fooD Drive - World Food Project

WHAT IS WORLD FOOD PROJECT?

Weare a student-led group that represents Bangkok Patana School that works towards delivering food assistance, working with communities to improve nutrition and building resilience within these communities. We are able to work towards this goal in school through WFP’s annual food drive which has proven successful once again. This year, we were able to deliver 170 boxes filled with nutritious food. We have collaborated with the Nong Mai community in Khlong Toey, where we were able to drive to that location and hand these boxes directly to the people that reside in that area. With the help of the entire secondary school, we were able to fill each box with an abundance of staple foods: 5kg bags of rice, 1L of vegetable oil, six cartons of milk, a bottle of fish and oyster sauce, three cans of tuna and 500g of glass noodles.

The entire WFP team contributed to the success of the food drive by participating in activities that range from the distribution of materials, collection of ingredients from each tutor group, packaging of boxes, and the delivery itself. Previously during the pandemic, COVID-19 restrictions had stopped us from delivering the boxes first hand and the residents had to lift these boxes independently. Fortunately, with the assistance of teachers, students, heads of the community and staff, over the course of 2-3 weeks, we were able to find success in WFP’s annual food drive. We hope to continue this event and to collaborate with the Khlong Toey residents in the future and get more people involved. Thank you to our members and everyone who donated!

Kaeng KraChan prepArAtion in year

It’s hard to imagine now that our advance Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) students have not been able to get out to nature to study our the environments around us. Now that COVID restrictions have eased, we are all ready to get outside and start learning how to (and why we need to) measure our environment with actual experiential learning in the field.

Year 12 ESS students ventured to the Outdoor Classroom to learn and hone their research skills for measuring biotic and abiotic components of our on-campus ecosystem. They spent time studying mainly aquatic productivity and biological oxygen demand in a freshwater pond using our state-of-the-art probeware and data collecting devices.

Our students at Bangkok Patana School are extremely lucky to not only have an on-campus ecosystem to study firsthand, but we are also blessed with the absolutely best in professional

equipment to measure quantitively many different abiotic characteristics such as light intensity, laser-pointed thermometers to measure micro-climates at a distance, a thermal imaging scope to detect living organisms in the forest that may otherwise be invisible, a powerful spotting scope for bird counts and other biotic measurements. Our dissolved oxygen probes and pH, total dissolved solid and electrical conductivity gear is top notch as well and allows all of our students an opportunity to learn the skills and concepts that many universities would envy. As an instructor, I feel very lucky to have such a wellequipped arsenal of tools (that still has room grow) to share with our students, in addition to a leadership team that has been incredibly supportive of our programme since day one.

The ESS practice run also serves as a gentle introduction to the detailed studies we will be embarking upon in Kaeng Krachan National Park during the second week of January 2023. All of our ESS students will explore many of the wild ecosystems of Kaeng Krachan for a full week. They will be surrounded by one of Thailand’s World Heritage wildernesses, accompanied by true experts in forest ecology and wildlife management. This will hopefully be a truly memorable experience for all of our travelers. Brace yourselves for some awesome updates right after New Year!

#234: true Crime podCAsts For Kids, tWeens And teens

My family and I love podcasts, especially in the car journey to school. They’re hands and eyeballs free, screen-free, and often just plain free. There are literally thousands of podcasts out there and lately my boys have been getting into the True-Crime genre. Finding great ones for kids is not that easy. That’s why I’m recommending you take a look at Best True Crime Podcasts for Kids | Common Sense Media. They’ve done all the hard work so you can discover shows that match their age and interests. Read the expert reviews and parent content guides, then check out what other parents, caregivers, and kids are saying about them. Here is the intro from their website:

“True crime is one of the most popular podcast genres. With hundreds of options out there, it can be hard to figure out what’s worth listening to, as well as which ones you feel are appropriate for your child. We’ve put together a list of some of the best, most unique, and diverse true crime—and true crime-like— podcasts out there. You’ll find something for

kids of all ages and interests. For the younger crew, there are fun parody court shows, exciting detective whodunits, and lighthearted audio mysteries. For tweens and teens who are ready for more traditional true-crime shows, there are real-life crime investigations, ranging from less gruesome criminal activities to documentaries of unsolved murders. Adults may find some familiar titles they want to listen to with their high schooler, especially since there aren’t graphic images to accompany some of the more intense stories. Either way, it’s best to make sure you know what your child can handle before pressing play on these thrilling—and sometimes chilling—podcasts.”

Have a relaxing weekend.
