VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH

BANBURY PLANT HIRE COMMUNITY STADIUM hOmE OF ThE PURITANS, YOUR COmmUNITY OWNED FOOTBALL CLUB

TODAY’S SPONSORS

Good evening all and a warm welcome to Boston United FC. I would like to extend a welcome to their Directors, Players, Management and supporters to the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium.

Our last two away games have certainly shown us the incredible commitment and mileage we have had to endure playing in the National League North – Spennymoor (450 miles) and Chorley (300 miles) totalling 750 miles in distance and 17 hours on board the coaches for the players, management and loyal fans who made both of the trips! It is interesting to note that the three clubs with the most travelling this season in the North division; ourselves, Gloucester and Bishops Stortford, have ended up in the bottom four of the league.

Tonight’s match sponsor is our one and only "Puritans Radio" who supply a fantastic service to our club and community providing home and away commentaries on all of our first team matches.

With this being our penultimate home match

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

in a season blighted by the large number of postponed home matches, it is sad that our fate has been sealed and we face relegation, but we have been here before in 1990 and 2014 and the strength of the club is how we overcome, rebuild and face our new challenges for a club steeped in history of nearly 100 years.

Always remember it’s Our Club –Our Community – Our Town We Are United!

FROM THE DUGOUT Wilson Writes

Good evening and welcome to the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium for this evening’s National League North fixture.

A Warm welcome to Ian Culverhouse, his staff, players, officials and supporters of Boston United who have made the long trip. We hope you enjoy your visit and have a safe journey home after the match.

Games have come thick and fast over the last few weeks and, whist performances are improving, we are still not able to get the three points that the

players deserve for all their efforts. We get a chance to change this tonight against one of the best footballing teams in the National League North so we will need to be at our very best. Boston are pushing hard for the playoffs and we wish them well after tonight’s game. We need to stay positive. Obviously everyone is disappointed with being relegated but with two games still to go, we need a big effort from everyone to stick together (staff, players and supporters) as we look to get some positive results and performances to

take into next season.

The last few games have caused mixed emotions. I thought our performance against Hereford was good. We worked at a high intensity and created some good chances and again against King’s Lynn I thought we were the better side for long periods of the game without taking our chances.

Keep up the support, it's appreciated!

Enjoy the game.

Previous Encounters of the Boston Kind

Last season the two clubs met for the first time. The National League North game at Banbury was played first, that being on Tuesday 16th August.

Boston started off the better side with Jordon Crawford having a good chance after just two minutes but his low shot flew wide of the post before Tom Platt then forced a fine save from Banbury goalkeeper Jack Harding. Banbury improved as the half developed and on 22 minutes a free kick taken by Morgan Roberts was put into the Boston penalty area and though headed away, the ball fell to Josh Smile who played it back into the danger area where it was headed just wide by Jack Stevens. Ten minutes later another Banbury free kick, this time whipped in by Stevens, was met by Jay Williams but he couldn’t direct the ball goalwards. The second half saw Luke Shiels dismissed on the hour mark for a second yellow card offence but despite the man advantage, Banbury were unable to find a way through the Boston defence and the game finished goalless.

The return game last season was played on a very cold evening in mid-December. Banbury began the game well, Ben Radcliffe going close with a header and Giorgio Rasulo forcing Sam Long to dive full-length to save a 15-yard effort. Banbury were though not to be denied and in the 14th minute a cross from the left by Rasulo was slotted home from inside the six-yard box by Jak Hickman to put them deservedly in front. Two minutes later, Banbury were very unlucky when Alex Babos tried his luck from 22 yards, his curling shot coming back off the crossbar. Boston were much improved in the second half, in the 53rd minute Jake Wright latched on to a hopeful up-field punt, but as he rushed towards goal with just Jack Harding to beat, he lifted the ball over the Banbury goalkeeper but also over the crossbar. Whilst the action continued in Boston’s favour as the second half progressed, actual goal scoring chances were few and far between, and Harding

had few saves to make thanks to some very impressive defending and overall it was a wellearned and deserved three points for the Puritans.

This season the game at Boston was played on a Tuesday evening towards the end of October. Banbury got off to the worst possible start when a late challenge from Tai Fleming inside the penalty area gave the home side a fourth minute spot-kick that Martin Woods comfortably converted. Boston could have doubled their lead in the next attack but Jack Harding did well to tip a fierce drive from Woods over the crossbar and the Banbury custodian again came to their rescue in the 31st minute when he tipped a point-blank header off the goal-line. Banbury though worked their way into the game towards the end of the first half and when Ken Charles came on for a second-half tactical change, they started to dominate and in the 67th minute their pressure got its just rewards when Fleming, making up for giving the penalty away earlier, forced the ball home following a corner. Another substitution saw Adi Yussuf join the fray and in the 79th minute he notched his second goal of the season to earn Banbury a 2-1 win.

Monday 12th April 1999 and Banbury United were away to Northampton based side Queen Eleanor in the semi-final of the Daventry Charity Cup.

Playing their fifth game out of six in 13 days, it was an “experimental” United side at Cogenhoe United’s ground. Marcus Townsend took over in goal in place of regular custodian Roland Barnes and there were several reserve and youth players in the side. Banbury though rarely threatened the home goalkeeper and went behind on the half hour when a corner was headed home. Though Banbury tried to get back into the game, they found the home defence with the upper hand. In the second half Banbury had an early let off when a thunderous shot came back off the crossbar though later a Banbury corner was headed against the bar and post before coming out. However, the game ended 1-0 to Queen Eleanor.

Banbury United Line Up: Marcus Townsend, Mark Essex, James Coleman, Shaun Lambourne, Danny Cockle, Ady Fuller, Jon Corbett, Jamie Cramond, Danny Carter, Andrew Parrot, Jody McKay. Used Subs: Matty Travers, Carl Standen. Unused Sub: R. Cooper.

Easter Monday 15th April 1974 and, in front of 392 spectators, Banbury United were at home to AP Leamington in a Southern League First Division North game.

United trailed for much of the game to a 37th minute goal scored by ex-Banbury player Steve Lee and rarely looked like breaking down a solid Leamington defence. They were rather fortunate not to go 2-0 down in the 53rd minute when Lee’s 25 yard drive hit the crossbar. However, with ten minutes to go Tony Jacques was blatantly pushed in the penalty area and Jim Hastie stepped up to convert the spot-kick. Then, with two minutes left, Jacques clashed with Tony Bowden inside the penalty area and the referee, after consulting the linesman, pointed to the penalty spot with Hastie duly obliging with the winner. An interesting aside is that United goalkeeper Stewart Rennie had to leave the field for treatment for 12 minutes in the first half with Dave Matthews temporarily going in goal!

Easter Monday 18th April 1949 and there was a crowd of 3,200 at the Spencer Stadium to see the Gay Puritans take on Stafford Rangers in a Birmingham Combination game.

Spencer went ahead on eight minutes when Phil Zambra converted a penalty kick after captain Douglas McPhee had been tripped. Play was even up to half time but good defensive play from both sides ensured there were no more goals. Spencer’s Maurice Baker was sent off early in the second half after raising a hand to Stafford’s Llewellyn but, remarkably, straightaway Spencer scored two goals in as many minutes to lead 3-0, firstly Alby White’s cross from the right was driven home by McPhee and then McPhee scored his second of the game, this time direct from a free-kick. Though Stafford applied a lot of pressure in the remainder of the game, Spencer’s defence held out to the end.

Banbury Spencer: Bill Saunders, Jack Screen, Ernie Barnes, Bertie Aston, Phil Zambra, Harry Locke, Alby White, Douglas McPhee, Maurice Baker, Tommy North, Joe Greszik.

With relegation now confirmed, Kevin Wilson and his side look to end the season on a high however it doesn’t come tougher than this with champions

Tamworth coming to town! Despite relegation being confirmed performances have improved of late and the Puritans can count themselves unlucky to only have a single point from their recent encounters, however they will need all your support if they are to end this winless run against the Lambs who will be in a jubilant mood after securing back-to-back promotions. One minor blot on what has been an incredible season for the Lambs was inflicted by the Puritans when Simeon Maye scored a 97th minute winner at the Lamb Ground in November as the Puritans. Come along and back the Puritans as they look to complete a league double over the champions and end the season on a high.
