BANBURY PLANT HIRE COMMUNITY STADIUM hOME OF ThE pURITANS, YOUR COMMUNITY OWNED FOOTBALL CLUB
Good evening all and a warm welcome to South Shields FC. I would like to extend a welcome to their directors, players, management and supporters to the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium after a long journey from the North East of the country for a midweek fixture! A consequence of our large number of postponed games!
The results have just not come and we certainly find ourselves in a relegation fight, with every remaining match becoming more important than the previous if we have suffered a defeat. Our manager, Kevin Wilson, has attempted to bring in new faces and the introduction of Ben Beresford and Christie Ward on Saturday at Curzon Ashton certainly gave us added boost. But we fell behind early on in the game, once again, and you could see the confidence drain especially after the home team went 2-0 up, minutes later. We had our moments, good to see Beresford get off the mark with a well taken goal, but all in all, we were well beaten by the hosts.
Tonight, we welcome our match sponsor, Humphris Funerals, Proudly serving Banbury and the local community via their branch in Albert Street. Their dedicated team at our Banbury funeral home are committed to creating tailored funerals that reflect the unique life of your loved one. They can be contacted 24 hours a day, by
CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME
telephone, and are here to discuss your needs. Or if you prefer, they can visit your home to discuss funeral arrangements.
Undoubtedly, this season has brought us many financial challenges, with the postponed matches and dreadful flooding problems and our ground issues. Negotiations with our landlord for a move continue to be incredibly testing, and the team’s form has clearly been a struggle. But we must hope that whilst we are still in with a chance of survival we get behind everyone involved with the club – players, management and our wonderful band of volunteers – to give a final push of commitment, effort and support, which is the least we can all ask to help rise above the frustrations and difficulties we all feel.
In finishing, I would like to thank the band of travelling supporters who got behind the team at Curzon Ashton and a special mention to the trustees of The Spencer Villa Fund for the financial support they have given in getting Ben Beresford across the line on loan from Birmingham City FC.
Our Club – Our Community – Our Town We Are United!

FROM THE DUGOUT Wilson Writes
Good evening and welcome to the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium for this evening’s National League North fixture.
A warm welcome to the management team, staff, players, officials and supporters of South Shields who have made the long trip south. We hope you enjoy your visit and have a safe journey home after the match.
Games are coming thick and fast over the Easter period. We get a chance to change our run of results against one of the full-time and best footballing teams in the National League North but we’ll need to be at our best.
We need to stay positive. With eight games to go, we need a big effort from everyone to stick together: staff, players and supporters. It was always going
to be difficult from the start of the season for whoever was in charge and now it is more important to grind out results and be as hard to beat as ever going into the final stretch.
I believe we are not far away from turning the corner but goals change games and we need to get that first goal.
Thanks to the players for all the hard work they’ve put in since my return as manager, it's been really appreciated by me, and we maybe have not got our just rewards for their efforts.
A warm welcome to our new players. Charlie Wise doesn’t need an introduction to you fans, a player who wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s a big character who is strong in both boxes and Banbury through and through but unfortunately, he sustained
a nasty injury on his debut at Scunthorpe. He is a big miss and I wish him a speedy recovery.
Ben Beresford from Birmingham City is someone I’ve been chasing for a long while, a player who can hold the ball and can score goals.
Christie Ward from Wycombe Wanderers is an all-action, box-to-box player who can play through the lines, and Nathan Opoku is a young forward who was at West Ham United and Bournemouth pre-COVID, which curtailed his promising career.
We’re working hard on and off the field to improve our squad. Keep up the support, it's appreciated!
Enjoy the game.

The only previous meeting between the sides was the league game at South Shields earlier this season, played on the first Saturday in September.
In front of an impressive crowd of 2,028, South Shields took the lead in the 10th minute when John Lufudu was allowed all the time in the world to accurately pick out Jordy Mongoy at the far post for a powerful free header back into the top corner from a couple of yards, a classic striker’s goal. Then, just three minutes later it was 2-0, Paul Blackett blasting the ball home from 16 yards with
an unstoppable effort that left United goalkeeper Jack Harding groping at thin air.
In the 37th minute Harding made a great save from a ‘one-on-one’ with Blackett but South Shields soon added to their tally when, in the 42nd minute, Aaron Martin was allowed to waltz through a static United midfield and defence to score a solo goal. South Shields took their foot off the pedal in the second half but added a fourth goal in the 90th minute through substitute Luke James to make the final score 4-0.

ALL OUR YESTERDAYS
Tuesday 20th March 1984 and Banbury United were outplayed for long periods by Bromsgrove Rovers in a Southern League Midland Division game at the Victoria Ground.
The home side were in front in the 7th minute when goalkeeper Neil Hurst missed his intended punch and the ball fell nicely to Shaun O’Meara who tucked away the unexpected chance. Banbury were indebted to some good goalkeeping from Hurst, as he made up for his early error, and some wayward finishing for keeping the half time score to just 1-0.
Banbury started the second half better and equalised after ten minutes when Mark Boyland collected a long clearance just inside the Bromsgrove half and advanced to the edge of the penalty area and powered a superb shot into the roof of the net. Banbury’s joy was short-lived though as just one minute later Melvin Langford restored the lead for Bromsgrove. Bromsgrove’s third goal after 70 minutes, a second from Langford, removed any hope of Banbury gaining a shock draw and as the home side cruised home, John Wainwright tucked away the fourth in the 85th minute to make it 4-1.
Banbury United: Neil Hurst, John Baker, Dave Woodland, Cliff Cousins (Russell Davies), Ian Bowyer, Bob Stockley, Mike McFarlane, Dave Bristow, Mark Boyland, Richard Turvey, Martin Shaw.
Saturday 21st March 1959 and Banbury Spencer beat an Aston Villa “A” side 1-0 away in a Birmingham League game.
Both sides played attractive football throughout the game though it was Spencer who took the lead after 20 minutes of the first half when a superb pass from Ron Eele to Trevor Thomas saw him run on to beat the advancing Bill Beaton in the Villa goal. It was all Villa at the start of the second half and Bill Harris and Johnny Crichton were at their best as the Spencer defence kept out the home side. Banbury though always looked dangerous on the breakaway and Alan Cox and Eele both had chances to extend Spencer’s lead. However, with both sides, despite the attractive football played, being unable to find the back of the net in the second half, the game finished 1-0 to Spencer.
Banbury Spencer: Bill Townsend, Alan Bury, Albert Ashcroft, Johnny Crichton, Bill Harris, Joey Wilson, Ron Eele. Tommy McGarrity, Alan Cox, Trevor Thomas, Bernard Brock.
Banbury Spencer outplayed their opponents Shenington in a Banbury Junior League Section C game on Saturday 24th March 1934. The game played at Spencer’s Middleton Road ground finished 8-0.
Norman Walls scored four goals in the first half and there were further goals in this period from W. Gallacher and Geoff Carter. Bob Kinder and Cyril Windrow scored in the second half, the latter scoring the best goal of the game when he received a pass from Carter who had tricked four opponents. Windrow then beat the remaining back and gave the Shenington goalkeeper Hawtin no chance with a terrific shot. Spencer were now in third place in the table just a point behind both Grimsbury and Mollington but with a game in hand on Grimsbury and a visit to Mollington still to come the Championship was in their own hands.
Banbury Spencer: Tom Penrice, Dick Varney, Dick Manning, Jack Ballinger, Eric Lowe, Mervyn Laver, Geoff Carter, Norman Walls, Cyril Windrow, Bob Kinder and W. Gallacher.
