TODAY’S SPONSORS

Good evening all and a warm welcome to Rushall Olympic FC. I would like to extend a welcome to their directors, players, management and supporters to the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium.

We continue to put pressure on the authorities in an effort to ascertain if there is something happening down the river or the waterways system to create the dreadful flooding of our pitch that we have had to endure! A visit from our local MP Victoria Prentice added to the media awareness of our situation and this afternoon we have had a meeting with the Environment Agency, looking for answers, assistance and any help available.

We are all aware that we find ourselves in a relegation battle and it is now absolutely imperative that we all stand up to be counted and get behind our management and team with three major home games on the bounce in the next week!

I took a close look at our league attendance stats and it really proves that we have a number of “Big Clubs” in our Division with four averaging over 2000 fans on home games and eight others over 1000 fans on average! Amazingly, our next away game is at

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

Scunthorpe and on Saturday they had a gate of over 7000 (incredible)! Of course, we can look forward to travelling there and be proud of the level we now find ourselves competing in.

I would like to welcome our match sponsor this evening, Edd Frost & Daughters, an independent family funeral director based out of Banbury and Brackley. They support families at every step of the way, ensuring the most personal and dedicated service of care. May I wish them an enjoyable evening and hopefully we will pick up some more precious points.

Tonight, we congratulate our goalkeeping legend, Jack Harding, for achieving an amazing 357 appearances and becoming a new record of the most appearances for a goalkeeper, a record held by another club legend Stewart Rennie who similarly made 356 appearances for the club in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Well done Jack, fantastic achievement, many congratulations from everyone at Banbury United FC.

FROM THE DUGOUT Wilson Writes

Good evening, and welcome to the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium for this evening’s Vanarama National League North fixture. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Liam and the staff, players, officials and supporters of Rushall Olympic who have made the trip. We hope you enjoy your visit and have a safe journey home after the match.

There is no doubt that we are going through a tough time at the moment, with four losses from our last four matches. We are in a battle to stay in this league and, as a manager whose team has never been relegated, I’m doing everything I can to

succeed. Our match against Darlington on Saturday left me feeling quite angry that in the first 45 minutes of the game, we just didn’t compete. We looked like the more dominant side at the start of the second half and got a great reaction to the half time talk, with Aidan Elliott-Wheeler’s goal. I am working on improving our football mentality; our issues are about attitude and application. We are trying to bring experienced players in but with just seven weeks until the end of the season, it’s very hard.

I would like to say congratulations to Jack Harding, who on 357 games

between the sticks tonight, becomes the Banbury United player with the most appearances for Club as goalkeeper in its history. That’s quite some milestone. Jack saves us over and over again. I do hope we get a good crowd tonight and that we come together to show Jack how much we appreciate him.

Enjoy the game.

RUSHALL OLYMPIC PLAYER PROFILES

Rushall Olympic Manager, Liam McDonald, introduces us to his team in his own words:

JAkE WEAvEr – GoAlkEEpEr:

“A fantastic ‘keeper who played such a big part in our promotion. He was unbelievable in both play-off games and I am delighted to have signed him up for another season. He knows what this level is all about and gives us a solid and reliable last line of defence.”

JordAAn BroWn – dEfEndEr:

“The big man has been instrumental in our success. He has been an absolute rock at the back and has collected an unbelievable amount of strikers along the way! He’s another big character in the dressing room.”

krisTiAn GrEEn – dEfEndEr:

“A fantastic player, a great defender and a real leader. He has played a massive part in our progression and success in recent years. He has been appointed captain for this season, a deserved honour for a player who has now appeared over 100 times for the club.”

MiTchEll clArkE – MidfiEld:

“It’s fantastic to have Mitch back with us. He had a lot of success during his previous three years with the club, where he became a well-respected figure both on and off-the-pitch. His versatility means that he can be used in a number of different positions plus he is great to have in and around the dressing room.”

cAllUM coylE – MidfiEld:

“An outstanding footballer. We missed him at a crucial time early last season but he finished the campaign strongly and was a catalyst to the success we enjoyed. He is one of the most gifted lads that I have ever worked with.”

AlEx flETchEr – MidfiEld:

“Started the campaign as one of our best players and then having dropped out of the starting line-up for a spell, he forced his way back in to become a key player for us when it mattered. He’s a technically-gifted performer who knows exactly what I want and expect from him. He has stepped up to the plate in the big games and if he can do that over the course of the season ahead then he will be a massive player for us.”

JAkE GoslinG – MidfiEld:

“An unbelievably talented footballer who’s played in The Football League for Exeter City and Bristol Rovers and on the international stage with Gibraltar. He is a technically-gifted and hardworking performer who has slotted into the team really quickly.”

sAM MAnToM – MidfiEld:

“Been an inspiration since he walked through the door and is such a great talent. The fans love him, and so do the players and staff. He was the best player in our League last season and he will be up there again at this level.”

8 | WE ARE UNITED OUR VISITORS

JoUrdAin MAsidi – MidfiEld:

“Jourdain’s game improved so much over the course of last season. His energy levels, commitment and work off the ball was absolutely brilliant. You don’t truly appreciate what he brings to the team until he is not there. He offers so much to us both on and off the ball and that is why he got my award last season.”

AlEx MoorE – MidfiEld:

“To have Scholesy here for the season is fantastic for the club. He’s a modern-day midfielder with so much ability and a wand of a left foot. He couldn’t resist coming back here midway through last season and it proved to be an inspired decision. He has so much passion for The Pics and that is going to serve us well.”

cAllUM roWE – MidfiEld:

“An outstanding footballer. We missed him at a crucial time early last season but he finished the campaign strongly and was a catalyst to the success we enjoyed. He is one of the most gifted lads that I have ever worked with.”

AndrEW lAndEll – forWArd:

“Dre has been nothing but outstanding since the day he returned to the club. He’s a strong, reliable and versatile player who has added more goals to his game. He’s also a real presence in the dressing room and has been a catalyst for what we went on to achieve during the course of last season.”

lUThEr MUnAkAndAfA:

“He has fantastic feet and plenty of pace. Much the same as Ronan Maher, he is very highly rated at his parent club."

Will shorrock – forWArd:

“Was fantastic from start to finish last season and was such a key player for us. He’s got great balance and drive and pops up with important goals and assists.”

TyrEll skEEn-hAMilTon –forWArd:

“Was fantastic at Alvechurch last season and is a really nice, local lad.”

ARD RECORD

JACK hARDING BECOMES BANBURY RECORD BREAKER

Jack Harding made his 356th appearance for the club as a goalkeeper against Darlington on Saturday. This equalled the club record for most appearances as a goalkeeper, a record held by another club legend Stewart Rennie who similarly made 356 appearances for the club in the 1960s and 1970s.

Assuming Jack plays against Rushall Olympic tonight he will thus overtake Stewart's amazing long standing club record.

Jack originally came through the Banbury United youth and reserve sides, making his first team debut as a 16- year-old back in April 2009 in a Buckingham Charity Cup semi-final first leg home game against Bicester Town keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win.

Jack would make another four first team appearances for the Puritans over the next few seasons, all in cup games, before leaving the club in search of regular first team football. After a spell with Hellenic League Division One side Hook Norton, he joined Premier Division side Ardley United for the start of season 2013/14 and over the course of the next two seasons he established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the Hellenic League.

Jack returned to Banbury United for the start of season 2015/16 and played a key role in that season’s Division One South & West promotion winning side, missing just one league game and keeping 20 clean sheets in his 41 league appearances. He was then an ever-present in league games for United the following season as the club established themselves back at Premier Division level. Jack has now been first choice goalkeeper at Banbury

RECORD TO BREAK

United for the last nine seasons, making his 350th appearance for the Puritans against Gloucester City in January.

You may notice that in club stats that Jack has a total of 357 club appearances to his name (not 356). This is because he has an appearance from playing up front last season in an Oxfordshire Senior Cup quarter-final home game against Easington Sports and scoring a goal in a 3-3 draw.

The top five appearances as a goalkeeper for the club, in its almost 93 year history, are as follows:

• Stewart Rennie 356

• Jack Harding 356

• Simon Tricker 295

• Bill Saunders 282

• Frank McCormack 214

A fantastic achievement by Jack to equal the club record on Saturday and one would expect to surpass Stewart’s long-standing total on Tuesday. Many congratulations from everyone at Banbury United.

Previous Encounters of the Rushall Olympic Kind

Though the clubs did not meet in league action until season 2018/19, there were two previous cup games between the sides prior to this.

The first was back in United’s Hellenic League days when in season 1997/98 a late goal at the Spencer Stadium from Neil Sole gave United a 3-2 win over the then Midland Alliance League side in an FA Cup Preliminary Round game. Season 2005/06 saw the clubs drawn together in the Southern League Cup, an Ady Fuller goal giving Premier Division Banbury a 1-0 win over their then Division 1 West opponents.

The opening day of season 2018/19 saw the first ever league meeting between the sides, following Rushall’s transfer that summer across from the Northern Premier League. That game at Rushall saw Banbury go in front midway through the first half through a 30-yard spectacular volley from Ravi Shamsi but a late goal from Joe Slinn ensured the spoils were shared. The return game that season saw Banbury lead 1-0 at the interval through a Steve Diggin penalty and though Joe Hull equalised for Rushall just before the hour mark, Banbury got the winner on 65 minutes through Greg Kaziboni.

In season 2019/20, Banbury visited Rushall at the end of November, a game played in dense fog. United eventually took the lead that they fully deserved in the 66th minute when Morgan Roberts sent over a pin-point cross where Craig Fasanmade converted the chance as he slid in at the foot of the post. However, United would pay for missing chances when in the 87th minute, against the run of play, Rushall equalised when a left-wing cross found the unmarked Daniel Waldron at the far post, and he headed home. The return game in season 2019/20 was not played due to Covid19 restrictions and neither for the same reason was either game in season 2020/21.

In United’s Southern League Premier Central Championship winning season of 2021/22, the Puritans did the double over the Walsall based side, a goal from Chris Wreh giving them a 1-0 win at Banbury on a Tuesday evening in November before goals from Jack Stevens and Wreh gave them a 2-1 win at Rushall in early March, that latter game taking

them 20 points clear at the top of the table. That season also saw the teams meet at Banbury in the Southern League Cup, Rushall Olympic running out 3-2 winners against a young Banbury United side.

With Rushall Olympic promoted through the play-offs to National League North at the end of last season, the clubs would, after just a one season gap, find games between the sides on the menu once more. The game at Rushall this season was played on the final Saturday in August. The first 25 minutes were very even, but the rest of the first half saw the Pics have the better of the game and but for some quite outstanding defending by The Puritans, they would have been in front at the break. The second half saw United take an unlikely lead in the 70th minute when Lawson D’Ath fired in an unstoppable shot from the edge of the penalty area which left Jake Weaver groping at thin air as it thundered into the top corner of the net. Rushall though equalised in the 84th minute when a loose ball in the Banbury box saw Danny Waldron loop a header over a stranded Jack Harding to earn them a deserved share of the spoils.

Hey

Tell me 5 interesting facts about Rushall/Walsall

Join us for an alternative look at today's opponents!

1. Rushall was once part of the Manorial Estates belonging to Saxon royalty. For a while it belonged to King Harold's (pictured above) mother (Gytha) before being passed on and eventually falling out of royal hands.

2. Rushall is a village and civil parish situated around one mile north east of Walsall.

3. In Rushall are the ruins of the ancient manor house, which during the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil War was strongly fortified and defended by numerous garrisons. During the latter, a Mr Pitt of Wolverhampton attempted to bribe Captain Tuthill to betray the garrison of Rushall, but his treachery was discovered, and he suffered death for it in 1640.

4. As of the 2021 census, the population of Rushall was said to be 12,844, a significant increase from when Rushall was first acknowledged in the Domesday book of 1086 when the village was made up of just eight households and a mill.

5. John Bernard Russell (2 October 1883 – 17 August 1965) was an English cricketer who played a single first-class cricket match for Warwickshire in 1920, but was a regular Minor Counties player for Staffordshire for 20 years.[1] He was born in Rushall, Staffordshire and died in Lichfield, also in Staffordshire.

Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium

The business end to the season sees the Puritans face massive test after massive test with games not coming much bigger than Saturday's visit of Southport to the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium. The previous meeting between the two sides this season saw a Ken Charles penalty make the difference as United made the long journey south down the M6 with all three points. Kevin Wilson’s side will be desperate to repeat the feat with Port sitting just two points ahead of United having played a game more going into tonight's fixtures. Every game now significantly contributes to how the end of this season will play out and we need every one of you to play your part, fill the terraces and get behind Kevin and his side as they look to battle against the drop.

Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium

The visit of Boston United to the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium sees the Puritans complete a run of three back-toback home games as well as seeing United do battle with both Lincolnshire clubs in the space of a matter of days. For the small number of lucky Puritans who were able to make the trip to Boston back in October, this fixture should bring some hope of picking up a few more points. The Puritans will be attempting to complete a league double over the Pilgrims after, on that first meeting this season, goals from Tai Fleming and Adi Yussuf saw the Puritans come from behind to win at the Jakemans Community Stadium. Once again though, Boston are going well and despite only winning two of their previous five, they are sat just one point and one place outside of the playoffs and as such will provide stern competition for Kevin Wilson’s side.
