Australia’s oldest harbourside pool, Dawn Fraser Baths is here in Balmain.
When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, and the reunification of Germany was a fait accompli (or whatever the German equivalent is), there was a handful of East Berliners who for several years afterwards refused to acknowledge the new reality. They never stepped foot into West Berlin, they continued to buy their cigarettes using the old East German currency, and some even tried rebuilding a section of the wall out of old shoeboxes.
I’m often reminded of these defiant hardliners on my morning walks in Balmain, passing the smattering of houses that still display a NO WESTCONNEX sign prominently on their front gate. It’s hard not to admire their idealism, and their singular inner west belief in the power of protest; or, in this case, a strongly worded house sign. It takes a special kind of true believer to think that a $45 billion public works project, that was fully completed in November 2023, might still be an issue that’s up for debate.
In their universe, it’s not inconceivable that motorists cruising the Iron Cove link might one day find the road being ripped up in front of them, following a government rethink. Kilometres and kilometres of meticulously engineered tunnels could very feasibly be dismantled and sent to the tip because Transport NSW finally succumbs to the persuasiveness of a plastic sign in Birchgrove.
Balmain Watch Tower
with Chris Taylor
I’ve spent many hours theorising why these signs are still up. The obvious answer is laziness. But I’ve witnessed the same home owners install and remove Halloween decorations and Christmas wreaths, while never so much as touching their NO WESTCONNEX sign. I’ve even observed houses undergo comprehensive renovations where just about the only feature to escape demolition was the anti-motorway creed.
It’s possible, I suppose, that the home owners have died. I’ve sometimes wondered if I should knock on their doors to check if they’re still with us. If a neighbour’s letterbox was overstuffed with months-old mail, I’m sure we’d all perform a welfare check. So why not when they’re displaying a years-old protest? The fact that some of these houses also sport a NO HARBOUR BRIDGE sign suggests they’ve been at this game for a while.
Of course, the true explanation is something that non-idealogues like me are always going to struggle to grasp. There’s a nobility in defiance, even when – especially when – the defiance has no grounding in reality. For the No Westconnexers, just like the East Berliners before them, it’s much less important to be on the winning side than on the right side. But the moral victory is only earned if they indeed practice what their sign preaches. And should, heaven forbid, they ever get caught zipping to the airport on the gleaming M8, then the rest of us naturally reserve the right to fasten a new sign to their houses that simply reads: AWKWARD.
Dental disease in pets
Imagine how your mouth would feel, and smell, if you never brushed your teeth! Dental health is as important for your pet as it is for you. When it comes to dental disease, prevention is better than the cure. We spoke to Dr Bianca Betros from Darling Street Vets to learn more.
Unfortunately, 70% of cats and 80% of dogs will experience some level of dental disease by the time they are 3 years of age.
Dental disease typically begins with a build-up of plaque on the teeth. Plaque consists of bacteria, food particles and saliva components that stick to the tooth surface above and below the gum line. If not removed, it’ll calcify into tartar, the yellow-brown material you often see on your pets’ teeth. Over time, plaque and tartar can progress to periodontal disease. This can lead to localised problems in the mouth such as tooth loss,
but can also cause significant illness involving organs such as the heart, liver, kidneys or brain.
At-home dental care
Daily teeth brushing is the best form of prevention, says Bianca. “Never use human toothpaste as it may be toxic to your pet. Instead, opt for a soft pet toothbrush or finger brush and special pet toothpaste.”
Dental toys, enzymatic chews and teeth cleaning biscuits may help keep the teeth clean. “Chews like Oravet Chews and Veggiedent Chews are effective options for maintaining good dental health.”
Additives such as Oxyfresh and Plaque Off can aid in reducing the early plaque on your pet’s teeth. Feeding
pets prescription dental diets such as Hills T/D and Royal Canin Dental Diet can also help reduce and prevent tartar accumulation.
Professional dental clean
To accurately and thoroughly assess your pet’s teeth, a general anaesthetic is required. Whilst under anaesthetic, your pet will receive a thorough scale and polish, probing and assessment of all teeth and dental x-rays. If any teeth are damaged or diseased, it may be necessary to extract them. Removing the damaged or diseased teeth will prevent pain and stop infections or abscesses from developing.
COMMON SIGNS OF DENTAL DISEASE
Visible yellow-brown tartar
Inflamed or red gums
Bad breath
Pawing at the face or mouth
Excessive drooling
Loss of teeth

We’re so fortunate to have great ferry services into the city, but unfortunately, the NSW Government won’t allow dogs on ferries unless they’re in a carrier. This restriction leaves many people with dogs reliant on cars to get around.
With so many people in our community owning dogs, it’s time for transport rules to catch up. We need to make it easier for people to use public transport and leave the car at home.
If you’d like to bring your furry friend on the ferry, please join our campaign. Sign the petition calling on the Minister for Transport to allow pets on ferries in 2025.

Robert Henderson is a Balmain boy through and through. He grew up in the housing commission flats in Laggan Avenue and attended Birchgrove Public School in the 80s and Balmain High School in the 90s. After graduating from university with a Bachelor of Horticultural Science, he took on a casual gardening job at Waterview Wharf Workshops — and never left.
How long have you been working at Waterview Wharf Workshops?
It’s been 20 years now! In 2004, I was asked to do a week’s gardening there, and I’ve been working here ever since.
What changes have you seen over the years? Businesses and people come and go, but the heart of the Balmain village always remains. The area has become more diverse, but we all work hard and look after each other.
What was the inspiration for the new colourful workshops?
The owner of Waterview was inspired by places such as Trondheim in Norway and Copenhagen in Denmark. We ordered several test pots from Resene and sampled them all
until we found the right one. The colours look good in their own right and together they are friendly and welcoming.
How often do the buildings need to be painted?
Due to its position, Waterview receives all the harshest elements nature can throw at it. Long, hot summers, harsh UV rays, winds laden with corrosive salt, driving rains. This means the buildings require constant maintenance. We paint all year round!
What’s the most enjoyable part of your job? Working on the waterfront is a great office! I love being close to the water. I put on the radio and paint away!
How often are you asked to take photos of people?
All the time! Sometimes we get tour buses of visitors coming through. Many visitors take photos with building colours that are considered to bring good fortune in their home country.
Have you witnessed any funny selfie moments?
Yes, the youngsters do some funny poses. Synchronised Tik Tok dancers are hilarious but it’s also wonderful to see people having fun.
What do you love most about Balmain? We all look out for our fellow Balmainians. All the fur babies going for walkies. And last but not least – our beloved Tigers!

A local gem blooming once again
Once a cornerstone of Rozelle’s pub culture, The Native Rose Hotel has seen its share of ups and downs. But under its current owners, who’ve been at the helm for the past year and a half, this historic pub isn’t just making a comeback, it’s thriving.
With a fresh sense of community, local spirit, and a vibe that feels like home, The Native Rose is quickly becoming Rozelle’s favourite gathering spot. We caught up with the guys behind it all, Joshua, Fabrizio and Clinton to find out how they’re turning things around and what makes the Native Rose so special.
The Native Rose Hotel has a long history in Rozelle, but it’s had some tough times in recent years. What made you want to take on this challenge? Honestly? It was love at first sight, and maybe a little madness! The Native Rose has so much character and history. You can feel it when you walk through the doors. We knew it had the
bones of a great pub, but it just needed people who believed in it. We wanted to bring back that true local pub feel, a place where anyone can walk in and feel welcome, with good food, cold drinks, and a real sense of community.
The pub has had a few false starts in modern times. What’s different this time around? We’ve really focused on listening to what locals want. It’s not about reinventing the wheel, it’s about creating a space where people want to spend their time. We’ve built a weekly roster of events and specials that keep things lively – from $1 wing nights to lots of live music, comedy nights and RnB Saturdays. But beyond the events, it’s the atmosphere and the great food. We want The Native Rose to be a home away from home. That’s why we’ve put so much effort into making sure everyone feels like part of the family here. We’ve got a fantastic chef who does all the traditional pub fare and specials, which means locals feel like they are having a home-cooked meal without the hassle of cooking it themselves.
Speaking of community, Rozelle has a big expat population. Has that shaped the vibe? Absolutely! The Irish and English expat community has been incredible. They know how to have a good time, and they love a proper pub vibe. That’s why events like our St. Patrick’s Day celebration are such a hit, with live bands from 9 am, Full Irish breakfast burritos (yes, you read that right), and a Van Morrison tribute show. But it’s not just the expats, we’ve got locals from all walks of life who come together here, and that mix of people really gives the place its heart.
The bar
Outdoor area
The Native Rose is more than just a pub, you’ve got accommodation, too. Tell us about that.
We’ve got eight rooms upstairs, offering a cozy, comfortable stay with plenty of character. Being so close to the cruise port and White Bay Power Station, we often get travellers looking for a true local experience before or after their trip. It’s also a popular spot for work visitors, whether they’re in town for a few days or just need a place to unwind between meetings. We also get families visiting loved ones, and our rooms offer them the perfect place to stay, just a stone’s throw from home. And, of course, they’ve got the pub right downstairs – what more could you ask for?
What’s been the most rewarding part of bringing The Native Rose back to life? Seeing the community embrace it. When people tell us, “This is my local now,” or when we see new faces become regular customers week after week, that’s everything. We’ve had people celebrate birthdays, engagements, weddings, even wakes. We’ve shared in so many of our locals’ significant life events, and they’ve shared in ours. It’s been a beautiful journey so far , and that’s exactly what we set out to create. A pub where people feel safe, considered, and connected.
For those who’ve never been to The Native Rose, what’s the one thing they shouldn’t miss?
Tough call! If you’re into good vibes and a bit of a party, our Friday karaoke nights are legendary. For a more laid-back experience, our Sunday live music sessions are perfect. Grab an Aperol, settle in, and enjoy some seriously talented local musicians. But really, the best thing to do is just walk in, grab a drink, and see where the night takes you.

Tune up your hearing
Hearing involves more than just your ears — it’s also about your brain. While hearing aids amplify sound, your brain must process speech, especially in noisy settings. Auditory training strengthens this ability, making listening easier. We spoke to Dr Annemarie Lindner, Principal Audiologist at Hearlix, to learn more.
What is auditory training?
Auditory training involves structured listening exercises designed to improve “brain hearing” skills like working memory and auditory processing speed. These skills are essential for understanding speech, particularly in complex listening situations. Traditionally conducted in audiology clinics, auditory training is now more accessible through self-directed, engaging programmes that make learning convenient.
Who can benefit from auditory training?
New hearing aid users: Training accelerates adaptation, making speech clearer and communication easier.
Individuals with mild hearing loss: Those experiencing age-related hearing decline or “hidden hearing loss” (difficulty hearing in noise despite normal hearing tests) can benefit. People without diagnosed hearing loss: Some struggle with auditory processing due to cognitive changes, and training can improve listening skills.
How effective is auditory training?
Research shows that regular auditory training leads to measurable improvements: Better speech comprehension: Studies indicate up to a 25% improvement in word recognition,
even in noisy environments.
Easier communication with familiar voices: Tailored exercises help individuals recognise and understand speech more easily from frequent conversation partners.
How to get started
Before starting auditory training, it’s important to assess your hearing. A hearing test gives you a clear picture of your auditory health and helps determine the best course of action. Why does this matter?
Keeps your brain sharp – Your brain relies on sound stimulation to stay engaged and process information effectively.
Reduces listening fatigue – Struggling to hear can be mentally exhausting.
Strengthens relationships – Misunderstandings due to hearing difficulties can strain personal connections.
Even mild hearing loss matters – It can affect speech clarity, memory, and communication. Helps you enjoy life’s little moments – From a child’s soft giggle to a friend’s joke in a café, hearing well keeps you connected.
Take control of your hearing health
Auditory training is a valuable tool for improving listening skills beyond what hearing aids alone can provide. With accessible and engaging programmes, individuals can take proactive steps towards better hearing and a higher quality of life. To learn more about hearing tests and auditory training, reach out to the audiologists at Hearlix.

New kids on the block
A new opening in our neighbourhood is always exciting! These three new additions are no exception and another reason to support local.
Johnny Gio’s Pizza Rozelle has the vibe of a New York City takeaway joint, but rest assured, it comes with all the best parts of a proper Italian pizza. Expect crispy bases and big flavours! For some people, pizza is all about the dough, for others, it’s about the toppings. Johnny Gio’s brings loads of both, the authentic Italian brick oven brings out big flavours, like guanciale and caciocavallo cheese. We recommend trying the Johnny Vodka, Sammy the Butcher, and our personal favourite, the Burrata Queen.
Just around the corner from Darling St, on Victoria Rd, you’ll find the delightful Hazel Bakery Café. They are one of the few cafes in the area that sell full-sized cakes. And with a variety of flavours to choose from, there’s something for everyone. A must-try is their Basque Cheesecake and Banoffee Tarts. The Strawberry Chiffon makes any occasion unforgettable! Take a seat in their light-filled café and enjoy premium coffee from Terra Cotta Roasters and freshly cooked brunch or lunch made from fresh locally-sourced ingredients. If you’re after something healthy, try their delicious ACAI bowl. Open 6 days a week, Tuesday to Sunday.

From rejuvenating bathhouse experiences and therapeutic massages to beauty treatments, spiritual readings, and healing sessions, they offer a truly holistic approach to health and wellbeing. Now, their Balmain Bathhouse is being completely transformed, and is set to open in late May.
With bathhouses in Newtown, Glebe and Balmain, Nature’s Energy is renowned for its European sauna traditions and serene, nature-inspired luxury. It’s a beloved destination for indulgent spa sessions that nurture, not only the body, but also the mind and spirit.
In a bold step to elevate community wellness, The Balmain Bathhouse is undergoing a transformative renovation, doubling its capacity to twenty guests and introducing cutting-edge facilities. The revamped bathhouse will boast a mineral pool enriched with magnesium, a large,

hand-crafted, traditional Finnish sauna, infrared sauna, steam room, salt scrub station, and river stone ice baths for an earthy and mineral-rich cold plunge experience.
Upgraded showers, spacious change rooms, and a plush recovery lounge will set the stage for ultimate relaxation. Bathed in natural light and surrounded by lush greenery, the space will feature organic textures to create a serene, luxurious retreat that feels timeless yet refreshingly modern.
The Balmain Bathhouse will soon feature two exciting additions – an infrared sauna and ice baths. Start your experience with a complementary salt scrub, then unwind in the steam room and mineral pool

Founders Andrew and Melissa Bovill wanted to create a space that reflects their passion for wellbeing and nature’s power. “This renovation will set a new standard for community wellness, with cutting-edge facilities and a design inspired by the beauty and power of nature.”
Although the bathhouse is being completely transformed, signature Nature’s Energy touches
will remain. All guests can still sip on hand-blended, organic herbal tea and engage in the unique Ask, Believe, and Receive wall. Here, guests pen intentions on seeded paper, deepening connection to nature and self.
Pricing is simple and flexible — 60 minutes for $60, 120 minutes for $90, or save up to $125 with a five-visit pass. Plus, enjoy a full 90-minute bathhouse experience for just $60 on weekdays.
Beyond the bathhouse, multiaward-winning day spa packages, massages, facials, and spiritual reading and healing services remain on the menu. And during renovations, you can still get your massage, facial, or spiritual fix.

Balmain Markets are back
After a long-awaited hiatus, the beloved Balmain Markets are back. Building on the success of the Christmas Market in December, which the community loved, organisers Trista and Annette have fought hard to make the markets a permanent monthly event.
With support from Inner West Council and Balmain Rozelle Chamber of Commerce, one of Sydney’s longest-running markets will again be a fixture on the peninsula’s calendar, running on the first Saturday of every month.
Dating back to 1977, the Balmain Markets have long been a place where creativity meets community. Set against the charming backdrop of St. Andrew’s Church, the markets have fostered a connection between local makers and shoppers looking for something special — from handcrafted jewellery and unique

gifts to fresh-baked goods. Sadly, just before covid the markets closed and have not been operating for the last five or so years.
“With Christmas approaching, we felt a strong community need to bring the markets back. Despite heavy rains on the day, the markets were a big hit and both shoppers and stallholders loved to be back. We’ve been overwhelmed by the support and are excited for the next chapter,” said Trista.
With its grand return, the markets promise an exciting lineup of stallholders, artisans and entertainment, celebrating the best of Balmain’s rich culture. The return of the Balmain Markets also marks an important boost for local businesses and creators who rely on these events to showcase their work. It’s the perfect opportunity to shop small, support the local economy, and discover hidden gems from talented makers.

YOUR FEDERAL MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT
Dear Darling readers
I’m delighted that the AEC’s recent boundary changes return Balmain, Birchgrove, Lilyfield and Rozelle to the Sydney electorate. Here’s a quick update about a few recent announcements from our government.
Boosting bulk billing
We’re delivering the biggest investment in Medicare’s history – boosting bulk billing so 9 out of 10 GP visits will be free by 2030. In Sydney, we’ll see an additional 31,800 bulk billed visits. Plus, we’ll open another 50 Medicare Urgent Care Clinics, including at Burwood, Chatswood and Marrickville. This builds on the 87 we’ve already delivered, and will mean 4 in 5 Australians will live within a 20-minute drive from one.
When Peter Dutton was Health Minister, he cut $50 billion from our hospitals, tried to jack up essential medicines by $5 and GP visits by $7, and said there were “too many free Medicare services.”.
Labor created Medicare. Only Labor will strengthen it.
Funding public schools
We’ve just announced $4.8 billion to fix the funding of NSW public schools, the biggest new investment in public schools by the Australian Government ever. It’s tied to reforms like more individualised support, evidence-based teaching, and more mental health and wellbeing support. We’re making sure every kid gets a great start in life.
Supporting micro brewers and distillers
The Albanese Labor Government will freeze the indexation on draught beer excise for two years, taking pressure off beer prices, and supporting local businesses and tourism. Also, from 1 July 2026, eligible wine, brewing and spirit manufacturers will be able to reclaim up to $400,000 in monies paid to excise or Wine Equalisation Taxes.
Easing the cost of living
Under Labor, wages are up, unemployment is low, and now interest rates are coming down.
We’re focused on helping ease cost-ofliving pressures with:
Tax cuts for all Australians
Energy bill relief
Cheaper medicines
TANYA PLIBERSEK MP
15% pay rise for early childhood
educators and aged care workers
Cutting uni debts
Fee-free TAFE and more.
Bringing energy bills down for GPs, dentists and vets
Aussie healthcare providers will save more on their energy bills with the Albanese Government delivering cheaper loans for cheaper rooftop solar, electric vehicles and EV chargers. The Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) is working with specialist healthcare lender Credabl, to deliver cheaper loans for energy efficient fixtures and fitouts.
Powering 10 million homes
Our government has approved enough renewable energy to power 10 million homes – almost every household in Australia.
In just one term of Government we’ve added 15GW of renewable energy to the grid – more than Peter Dutton’s 7 nuclear reactors could hope to produce.
Labor is on track for renewables to be 82% of the grid by 2030, well before Peter Dutton’s $600 billion nuclear plants will be online.
Environment
We’ve been working hard to protect the environment including:
Protecting an extra 100 million hectares of land and ocean – an area four times the size of the UK.
Driving the transition to a circular economy with Australia’s first ever
Environmentally Sustainable Procurement Policy to generate strong local demand for recycled goods and to cut waste. Recycling an extra 1 million tonnes of rubbish every year including for soft plastics.
Australians will soon have a choice between a Labor Government focused on helping them, or Peter Dutton who opposes these measures and says he’ll cut $315 billion from essential services.
Please scan the QR codes for more on our overall and environmental achievements.
Taste the flavours of autumn
Cooking with seasonal ingredients is a time-honoured tradition loved by cooks around the world. Rozelle-based SBS Food and ABC recipe developer and editor Christine Knight shares her top tips for making the most of seasonal produce.
We have the most amazing home-grown produce in Australia, so ensuring meals are made with fresh ingredients, at the most affordable price is so important. Shoppers should watch out for a great incoming crop of apples, pears, plums, persimmons, chestnuts, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, parsnips and celeriac this season, and there’s so many places on the peninsula to purchase fresh ingredients.
Seasonal cooking not only makes meals more delicious, but it’s also a more sustainable, walletfriendly way to shop. Get the best out of your seasonal cooking with some of my cooking tips to kick-start your culinary creativity this autumn!
Persimmons
Persimmons (fuyu) – great eaten firm or soft, but they shine when served in crisp slices on your cheeseboard.
Try pairing sliced fuyu fruit with a smoked cheddar.
Sweet potatoes
Sweet potatoes are packed with nutrients and fibre and they’re extremely versatile.
Parsnips
Freshly chopped salsas are great for Tex-Mex dishes like nachos, but you can also make a chopped salsa to spoon over pan-fried fish, chicken or steak. Add a little finely chopped persimmon to your next salsa for a unique but sweet twist.
Persimmons are also great baked – instead of apples, impress friends and family with a persimmon tarte tatin, served with a dollop of thick cream.
Try replacing your shepherd’s pie mash topping with sweet potato mash for a seasonal twist to this classic family favourite.
Try a blended sweet potato soup this season – it may become your new favourite alternative to the much-beloved pumpkin soup!
Use leftover sweet potato mash to make homemade gnocchi. Just mix with plain flour and salt, shape, and boil until they float. Serve with your favourite sauce.
Blend boiled-untiltender chunks of parsnip with chicken stock, sautéed onion, garlic, and a little cream (or milk) to a silky soup. Parsnips contain less starch than potatoes, resulting in a creamier texture which can occur with potato and leek soup.
Switch out potato for roasted parsnip chips to eat with burgers, steak and schnitzels.
Try replacing potato with parsnips for a twist on potato bake for a nuttier and slightly sweeter finish.
Parsnips are great for you because they’re packed with fibre, which supports digestion and keeps you full longer.

Roasted vegetable salad with feta cheese and nuts
Take advantage of your seasonal sweet potatoes with this simple but crowd-pleasing roasted vegetable salad. This recipe is designed to help you use up veggies hanging about the crisper drawer and make the most of your pantry staples. Try swapping out some of the veggies for carrots, capsicum, pumpkin, eggplant or broccoli florets – they all work very well here.
INGREDIENTS
1 medium sweet potato
1 potato
1 zucchini or carrot
1 onion
Balsamic vinegar glaze and olive oil, for drizzling
1 tbsp any kind of dried herbs (dried oregano, parsley or Italian herbs)
1 tsp salt
2-3 large handfuls of any kind of salad (roughly chopped lettuce, spinach leaves or mixed salad)
50 g feta cheese, to serve
2 tbs roasted peanuts, ¼ tsp red chilli flakes (optional), to serve
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 220°C. Roughly chop the vegetables into bite-sized pieces.
2. Line a large baking tray with baking paper. Top with the vegetables and drizzle generously with olive oil. Sprinkle over the dried herbs and salt. Toss well to coat. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
3. Remove the roasted vegetables from the oven and allow to cool. Divide salad leaves between bowls (or containers, if you’re meal-prepping for the
week!). Top with the cooled, roasted vegetables.
4. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar, olive oil and crumble over the feta cheese. Sprinkle with nuts and chilli flakes (optional).
TIP
This makes for a satisfying meal alone, but if you want extra protein, add some tinned fish or pan-fried haloumi or chicken.

Timeless and contemporary must reads
Local book lover Oscar Child takes us on a whirlwind tour of some of his favorite reads. He shares his thoughts on four unforgettable books that are sure to inspire young (and old) readers and give everyone a glimpse into the lives of characters who are anything but ordinary.
THE HOBBIT
J. R. R Tolkien | Fantasy
This incredible classic is one of the best books for teens and young adults. It’s about a young Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins going on a quest to rob and defeat a dragon named Smaug the Terrible. Along his journey he meets eleven dwarves, and a wizard named Gandalf the Grey. Whether you’re reading it on a lazy afternoon, or 11pm at night and get told to go to bed (I know from experience), this is one of the greatest books ever written.
THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES
Arthur Conan Doyle | Mystery
Out of his smoke-filled rooms in Baker Street works Sherlock Holmes, the top detective of 19th century London. Accompanied by his friend Dr Watson, these two men will work together to solve many mysteries, and the best part, you get to join them with the twelve mysteries included in this book. Read it and you will soon understand why it is such a classic.
RABBIT, SOLDIER, ANGEL, THIEF
Katrina Nannestad | Historical fiction
This book is about a Russian boy who lives in the time of World War 2. A German raid on his village leaves him without a home or a family and the elevenyear-old boy must make his way around Russia with no one to look out for him. This is a great book for young readers to enjoy, and it shows the life of an ordinary person in World War 2 and how they were affected. It’s up there with the best historical fiction books!
GRENADE
Alan Gratz | Historical fiction
Sometimes overlooked for some of his more wellknown books, Grenade is set during World War 2. On April 1, 1945, Okinawa (an island in Japan) is invaded by American soldiers. This book follows two boys, Hideki, an Okinawan boy who was pulled out of school to fight for his country and Ray, an American marine who enlists to fight for his country in the battle for Okinawa.

Saunas have been used for centuries to promote relaxation, wellness and overall health. Originating from Finland, the traditional sauna experience has evolved to include infrared saunas and steam rooms, each offering their unique benefits.
Whether you’re looking to unwind, improve circulation or boost recovery, saunas offer an array of health benefits that make them worth trying. And with several options available locally, you don’t even need to leave the peninsula!
Traditional sauna
This type on sauna uses heated stones to create a high-temperature, lowhumidity environment. The ideal temperature is 80°C to 110°C and it’s by far the hottest of the three. You can generate steam and increase the relative humidity by pouring a small amount of water on the stones which will make the sauna feel hotter. If you’re a sauna newbie, five minutes may be enough!
Infrared sauna
Infrared saunas use the same type of heat as the sun but without the harmful ultraviolet rays. Unlike traditional saunas, infrared saunas use radiant heat to directly heat the body rather than the surrounding air. This allows for lower temperatures, around 45°C to 65°C, which still provides deep heat penetration,
making it a great option for those sensitive to high heat.
Steam room
Also known as a Turkish bath, a steam room is heated with steam rather than dry heat, maintaining near 100% humidity. The temperatures are lower than in dry saunas, typically between 40°C and 50°C, but the moisture makes it feel much hotter. Because of the moist, steam-filled air, these saunas can provide relief from sinus congestion and other respiratory conditions.
BEST LOCAL SAUNAS
With regular sauna use, you may experience better relaxation, improved circulation, and a healthier body overall. So why not give it a try? Your body and mind will thank you!

Exercise isn’t just for the young, it’s for anyone who wants to maintain their independence, health and overall wellbeing. Staying active is about embracing what your body can do and making the most of every stage of life. Aged 91, Frank is doing just that.
Frank lives at home with his wife Margaret in Balmain East. He’s been active throughout his life, swimming in the local harbour pool, sailing and playing sports. A few years ago, Frank was diagnosed with dementia and his activity levels began to decline. Concerned about maintaining his strength, mobility and independence, Frank’s family engaged Stay Active to support his physical wellbeing.
Tom, one of Stay Active’s exercise physiologists, has been working with Frank several times a week since August 2024, providing structured exercise sessions in his home. Through a carefully designed program focusing on strength, mobility, aerobic fitness and balance, Frank has made remarkable progress in his functional ability.
Under Tom’s guidance, Frank’s 30-second ‘sit to stand’ score has improved by 23%, placing him in the 90th percentile for men his age. His ‘timed up and go’ mobility score has improved by 33%, his six-minute walk distance has increased by 21%, and his hand grip strength has improved by 6%. Frank has also made improvements in his single-leg balance, all of which contribute to reduced fall risk and greater independence.
Frank’s story highlights that staying active is beneficial at any age, and age shouldn’t be a limiting factor when it comes to movement. Exercise is especially crucial for older adults because it helps combat muscle loss, improves bone density, reduces the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes and supports mental wellbeing. For those with conditions such as dementia, structured physical activity can aid in maintaining
independence, enhancing mobility, and even slowing cognitive decline.
Programs like Stay Active ensure that people of all ages can benefit from a personalised approach to exercise. Whether it’s strength training to prevent falls, balance exercises for confidence, or aerobic activities to improve endurance, tailored exercise programs help older adults stay mobile, independent and engaged in life.
Frank’s progress is a testament to the power of movement. With dedication and expert guidance, he has regained strength and confidence, proving that it’s never too late to prioritise health and fitness. His commitment to staying active is helping him continue doing the things he loves and living life on his terms.

Next steps for a new Balmain Festival
We’re transforming Jazz in the Park into a new street festival on Darling Street between Montague and Booth Streets in Balmain.
The creation of a new Balmain Festival is the next step in our plans to revitalise Darling Street.
With the conversion of White Bay Power Station to an arts and cultural venue, the renovation of Balmain Town Hall, and the conversion of our town halls to free arts venues, we’re gaining real momentum.
We recently held community consultation with Balmain locals, where we asked you what you’d like to see at a local street festival. Whether that be a wider range of
music and arts, or different stalls and workshops run by the local community and businesses.
We are currently in the process of reviewing your feedback.
We hope this will be an ongoing festival that can celebrate what’s special and unique about Balmain.

The Genesian Theatre shines in Rozelle
One of Sydney’s longest-running theatre companies, The Genesian Theatre, opened its new 130-seat playhouse in Rozelle on 10 January after relocating from the city — and it’s been booked out ever since. With cooler weather on the way, now is the perfect time to catch a play, with Shakespeare’s Macbeth running until 12 April.
Barry Nielsen, Genesian Theatre Director, commented, “We have had a very warm welcome from the local Rozelle community. Our regular patrons love the new theatre and have had a good time exploring the local dining and pub scene. And it has been great to see new faces at the theatre too.”
Operated entirely by volunteers, The Genesian Theatre serves as an invaluable stepping stone for aspiring actors, directors, and designers, whether they’re launching a professional
career or pursuing a lifelong love for the stage. Committed to making theatre accessible to all, it proudly offers affordable tickets, ensuring that everyone can experience the talent, creativity, and storytelling that bring each production to life.
The current season of Macbeth by William Shakespeare brings a classic text to a brand-new stage. Murder, superstition and madness haunt this terrifying tale. When Macbeth meets three witches who predict he will become Thane of Cawdor and then King of Scotland, a madness born of ambition sets in, and he and his wife seize power by all possible means, leading to murderous consequences.
Macbeth is one of the greatest of all literary and dramatic works about temptation, conscience, great crime and consequence. It is Shakespeare’s towering vision of the power of desire in full flood. On until 12 April, this one is for all the lovers of great drama and literature.
Inside The Genesian Theatre
From the 25 April the theatre will showcase Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime, adapted from Oscar Wilde by Constance Cox. This show’s season will go until 7 June, so don’t miss the chance to visit our very own Rozelle theatre this autumn.

The much-loved Glover’s Community Garden in Lilyfield is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Sunday 6 April. The garden was founded on 25 April 1985 by a local retired couple, Yvonne and David Taylor, who had a vision to grow organic vegetables, herbs and flowers in a productive way.
The garden was initially sponsored by the Les Moore Community Centre in Lilyfield. The garden emphasised promoting the rehabilitative and therapeutic benefits of gardening to the local community.
Raised garden beds were quickly established using the “no dig” method, where layers of newspaper, plant material, straw, manure, and compost were used to produce a rich growing environment. Within six months, the garden flourished, producing hundreds of kilograms of vegetables, cut flowers, and pots of herbs each season. Excess produce was sold at the Lilyfield community centre, and the funds were used to pay back a loan for the garden establishment.
After the Taylors left in the 1990s, the garden has undergone many phases, with periods of greater or lesser activity from locals. Regardless, it has always remained a communal garden where much of the space is worked on together and the produce shared amongst the members.
Today, the garden is a mix of communal areas and private allotments and is home to a flock of
backyard chickens, native bees and worm farms. There are currently around 30 garden members with Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings being popular times to garden and socialise. Regular educational events are held as well as creative activities that complement gardening.
Recent community initiatives undertaken by the garden have included an external herb border garden providing community access to a wide range of culinary herbs, the establishment of a decorative native garden and visits from local preschools where children can learn and experience the joy of gardening.
Next time you are passing by, have a look around, or attend one of the working bees held at 9am on the first Sunday of each month. And don’t miss the open day birthday celebrationeveryone is welcome!

Rowntree Street, Balmain terminus
Lost tracks, the history of trams
For centuries, trams have played a pivotal role in shaping urban landscapes, connecting communities, and revolutionising public transport. Trams were once central for getting to and from the Balmain peninsula. Balmain Association shares this unique history.
The steam tram arrived in Rozelle in May 1892, huffing and puffing from its previous terminus in Forest Lodge. Its new route came along Ross Street, through the Crescent, across the causeway to Gordon Street, and then zigzagged up the hill on a reserved track and through the park next to the Native Rose Hotel to join Victoria Road, then terminating in Darling Street outside Rozelle Public School.
It was extended, first to Gladstone Park in October 1892, then to Nicholson Street in East Balmain in 1902. This required some levelling of Darling Street, and you can still see this in
the cutting outside the London Hotel. Steam trams were not popular due to the smoke and the effect on horses, so the Balmain line was converted to electric trams in August 1902.
Balmain’s tramline was unique amongst the Sydney tram network because of its undulating nature. The steep hill leading down from Nicholson Street to Balmain East wharf required a special mechanism to prevent trams from running into the harbour. Various plans including a zigzag line through the houses, or a trestle with a lift were considered. Eventually, it was decided to use a system that pushed a dummy connected to a cable that hauled an underground counterweight up the hill. The tram was pushed back up the hill by the dummy as the counterweight descended. The dummy system is now preserved at the Sydney Tram Museum in Loftus.
A branch to Birchgrove opened in November 1917. This was never profitable and closed in November 1954. You can still see the cutback curves where it turned from Darling into Rowntree Street, onto Cameron Street and then down into Cove Street.
Vic Solomons collection
Trams stopped running in Balmain in 1959, but remnants of the trams are still visible today. There is the red brick electric substation in Hancock Street Rozelle, which is now a residence.
Along much of Darling Street, the central strip of concrete shows where the tram tracks ran. Especially noticeable is the curve at Beattie Street where it deviates from the centre.
Two depots remain, one called Rozelle despite being in Glebe, built in 1904, which is now the Tramsheds. It housed 157 cars. Leichardt, completed in 1914 as a tram depot was never used as such. It then became the government bus workshops and is now the home of the Sydney Bus Museum.

But by far the biggest legacy is White Bay Power Station with its builder’s name, ‘NSW DR&T’ (Railways and Tramways), above the entrance from Victoria Road. Constructed from 1912 and opened in 1917 to provide power for trams and the newly electrified railways. The current building dates from the 1950s and replaced the original boiler house. A second boiler house built after 1925 was demolished in the 1970s. There was a tram siding from Victoria Road along Roberts Street into the site. Threatened with demolition as recently as 2020, the power station has been magnificently restored as an event and cultural space. BALMAIN ASSOCIATION

More paws than prams
The inner west has undergone a quiet shift. What was once a neighbourhood of prams and playgrounds has transitioned into a world of puppy playdates and paw-rents (see what I did there). In Balmain and Rozelle, dogs outnumber children 1.7 to 1, and with 1,295 dogs per square kilometre, the inner west holds the title for Sydney’s highest canine concentration.
The pandemic was a game-changer, fueling a surge in pet ownership. At the same time, Sydney’s fertility rate plummeted to a record low. It seems more people were opting for fur babies over real ones, as nearly half of Sydney’s council areas reported more dogs than children. By 2022, 48% of households owned a dog, a 40% increase on prepandemic levels.
Why this pet obsession?
In essence, the rise of dog ownership in Balmain, Rozelle, and the broader inner west mirrors a societal shift. As birth rates declined, traditional family structures evolved, and it seems dogs have filled the void by offering companionship and a unique sense of community.
Our path to dog ownership began after persistent pleas from our daughter. After babysitting a neighbour’s dog, she was
smitten and launched a campaign for one of her own. We eventually relented, and it’s been one of the best decisions for our family.
Humanising our dogs
The real shift isn’t just that we own more dogs, it’s that we now treat them like tiny, non-verbal people. Social media has played a huge role, with Instagram and TikTok turning dogs into celebrity influencers. Making us even more obsessed with treating them like VIP humans.
Remember when dogs used to sleep outside in a kennel? Now, if they’re not sprawled across your bed, they’re curled up on pet beds made from orthopedic memory foam.
Birthday parties with dog cakes? Normal.
Handmade dog sweaters? Not weird.
Pet psychologists? Fully booked.
I write this as someone who once scoffed at the idea of humanising dogs, only to now find myself wheeling mine around in a shopping trolley at Harris Farm and spending more on her grooming than I spend on myself.
Health benefits of dog ownership
Dogs have long earned their title as man’s best friend, offering companionship on demand and unconditional love. They also don’t judge, hold grudges, or bring up something embarrassing you did six months ago.
And let’s face it, dogs give more than they take. Scientific studies (yes, real ones) have shown that interacting with dogs can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Just twenty minutes of playing with a dog increases oxytocin and serotonin levels, lowering stress and raising happiness. According to heart.org, dog owners often experience lower blood pressure and a decreased risk of heart disease too.
The billion-dollar canine economy
Who could have predicted that walking dogs, once a chore delegated to kids for pocket money, would become such a lucrative industry? Yet here we are, in an era where dogs go to daycare while you work, doggy wellness retreats exist, pet grooming salons are more luxurious than some human hairdressers, and some dog walkers earn more per hour than junior lawyers.
Our relationship with pets has clearly changed, and the market has responded accordingly. Australian pet owners spent an estimated A$33.2 billion on their pets in 2022. The online pet supplies market saw revenues reach A$73 million in November 2024. Projections indicate this figure will grow to A$1.1 billion by 2028, with an annual growth rate of 9.6%.
We pay the bills, but they call the shots I used to believe I was the master in this human-dog relationship. But when you’re out walking your dog, who’s actually in charge?
We follow them around while they sniff out a spot and then we dutifully pick up their poop in our biodegradable bags. If the proverbial aliens were watching, we know what they would be thinking.
So… Is this a problem?
Not really. The inner west’s dog obsession is both adorable and slightly absurd, but it also reflects how modern city life has changed.
People are having fewer kids, household structures have shifted, loneliness is at an all-time high, and dogs give us instant joy, comfort, and community.
The trade-off? Our streets are covered in remnants of dog waste and our parks and footpaths are being overrun by dogs.
But when I watch my Cavoodle stare at me with complete, undivided love, I get it. We treat them like humans because, in many ways, they give us the kind of unwavering companionship that even some humans struggle to match. And that’s worth every paw-print on my couch and every poo bag in my pocket.
So go ahead – book that paw-dicure, order the dog-friendly wine, and treat your pooch to a weekend wellness retreat. After all, inner west dogs don’t just have owners - they have lifestyles.

Drive green, charge local
With the rise of electrical vehicles, Inner West Council is accelerating the transition to sustainable transport with a major expansion of public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure which means local charging just got easier.
This initiative, funded by NSW Government grants and public-private partnerships, addresses a key challenge for local EV owners in the inner west - limited access to home charging due to a lack of off-street parking.
Inner West Council has worked very closely with the community to address the issues facing both existing and future EV owners, placing a huge priority on accessibility, safety and convenience in the ongoing rollout. The 136 EV chargers
represent 1% of available parking spaces in the inner west LGA.
Vehicle registration data shows that the inner west community has embraced EVs at a rapid pace, with adoption rates far exceeding state and national averages. By expanding public charging options, the council is supporting residents making the switch and futureproofing the community as Australia moves towards more sustainable transport options.
